Agreed 👍 My 9 year old daughter has 2 piggies Lucy and Mia. While she does care 4 them I always help her out with all their daily care routine and cuddles. And yes we have emergency vet $s just incase.
I’m under the age of 15 and me and my parents split the costs. I pay for the food, and everything that is in the cage+the cage it self. When they visit the vet, (very limited) they pay.
11:08 so. true. When I adopted my two Guinea pigs they both had URIs before I even brought them home. Before I knew it my Guinea pigs cost me $350 for the visit and the two rounds of antibiotics. And I would do it again in a heart beat to treat them. But it is a huge thing to take into consideration before adoption. The cost is so far beyond the adoption fee.
As a 13 year old who owns 2 rabbits I take of them very well! My family haven’t seen my rabbits in like 2 months because I take care of them so well 🤷♀️ I clean, I pay for all there things, vet bills and I just use busses and taxis
I didn’t say kids couldn’t take care of pets well. I said there should always be a parent willing to help out financially or otherwise if needed. Your rabbits could need an emergency vet & that’s easily 1k in vet bills. Do you have a job?
@@autumngrace. Oh no I totally agree! I own pigs since 2014. I've owned total of 11 pigs and none of them needed a bath. I clean cage regularly and they always smell like fresh hay so its not always necessary to bath them. I've also owned longhaired pigs and all i needed to do is cut their hair short at the bottom and it was enough, they clean themselfs pretty well. Also vets in my country say when it comes to fungus if u bath your pig regularly its easier for them to get that because their skin barier is destroyed. We bath them when a vet recommend this, with a special shampoo. About the lettuce - lettuce absorb a lot of heavy metals from soil, thats why its not recommended (at least where i live) to feed them to much lettuce. Also it doesn't give them a lot of nutrition so i think it shouldn't be feed on daily basis. I personally give my pigs lettuce once a week max. I mostly agree with the rest or it's a small difference, but i understand why people think like that about lettuce and baths and personally i stick to this rules myself and pigs are happy and healthy. My vet and many exotic vets in my country agree with that. Tbh i try to learn from them as much as i can
9:25 couldn't agree more! i hate how children say that the pets are "theirs" when really their parents do a lot more than they do! like, i doubt a 10 year old would be able to pay for everything for a pet, including vet visits themselves, and even then their parents drive them! definitely a family pet and not their own
yes! a child can definitely help care for, or even do the majority of care, for a pet, but they can't do it all. vet bills & driving & even sometimes food and supplies costs can be too high for a child to afford. when I had a guinea pig as a child, my mom always helped me care for her, paid for the vet, and bought her supplies when my allowance wasn't enough to cover them.
i am a child and take care of my piggies very well!!! they have a 2 x 4 cadge and would love to upgrade but cant bc there isnt any more room. i have 2 females and one of them had to go into sugery but my perants paid for it. my pigs are super happy and love there veggies! i would just say just bc were children doesnt mean we dont take care of them properly xxx

I'm almost 14 and really agree with "pets aren't for kids" my parents are ok with me getting guinea pigs and honestly Autumm you helped me learn about proper piggy care so thank u! 😊 I'll be the best piggy owner I can be!
I doubt any parent would get a CHILD a pet like a dog and just leave everything to them. Like it’s a child, they don’t have a job or a car so idek why a parent would get a pet
I would say no to hay bags too, my piggie got stuck in one once, luckily I happened to be in the room when it happened so I was able to quickly get her out but things could have easily ended definitely if I wasn’t home to see it.
Yeah I don’t prefer hay bags, but I think if the pigs body can comfortably fit inside the hole they should able to get in and out ok. So I think hole sizing is super important when using the bags
I liked the idea of the hay bag but one of my males was inside the bag and they also then ended up making a big mess inside the bag. Now I've got these litter boxes that I just put the hay pile in
I agree partly with the vet bills opinion, cause in England, I know that the vet I use for my guinea pigs, have like a fee plan where you can reduce the cost slightly in certain circumstances.
haha I've thought about it! although I feel like rabbit care in general is soooo much more controversial and I'm still learning and working on forming my own thoughts on a bunch of topics! so maybe in the future!
omg yes agreed! but yeah lol rabbit care is just a whole controversy itself 😭😭 you literally can’t say anything without being attacked on fb groups or forums 💀
I half agree with the children should not own pets. I don't think parents should get their children a pet and tell them that its all on them and they need to do everything because the child WILL MOST LIKELY BECOME BORED. but I do think getting into those mid to late teen years then its ok. im 14 and I saved up lots and lots of money for my hamsters and convinced my parents that I was responsible enough for a rabbit and had the funds and they allowed me to get my rabbit BUT I am the only one who has anything to do with her (except my sister who shares a bedroom with me) but the thing is I have a full-time babysitting job so every month I set aside money for emergency vet visits and still will have enough for the main stuff as well as money left over for me. I also have a babysitting job at my church once a week so thats another 20 extra dollars my mom is willing to drive me to the vets though so it just depends on the parents and I think its important before you get this pet that your parents can at least drive you to the vets for checkups/emergency vets if you do not have a license and a car!!
@@nightlitereads7338 I've a 5x2 cage with a loft and the girls love it. And I can easily expand it to 4 piggies 5x3. At the moment I'm sticking to what I've got till my Husky girl stops hunting. She very interested in the piggies but only licks them. Usually on their butts which they don't like. What is it with dogs and butts?
Just I question, does 12 count as a child? I'm 12 and I'm doing all reaserch and I do proper care of hamsters. My whole family is on board and they are all happy except my brother. My mom can pay for the vet bills if ever need. I half way agree on the small animals and children thing bc some kids aren't responsible but I would say I am more responsible than most kids! Just wanted to ask you! Bye! Have a nice day/night :)
Yes it does! You’re saying that your mom will help pay for vet bills if needed - which supports the opinion I shared in this video! Kids are unable to fully care for pets on their own and need a parent there to help with costs, vet bills, other issues that may arise. While I’m sure you’re very researched, you are still needing a parent to help you with at least some aspect of the care, & therefore my opinion is firm. :)
I agreed with you on absolutely everything you said in this video! I have three girls in a 2x9. They don't really care for floor time and love their enclosure. I just added a loft and so far one girl went up there right away. I'm working on convincing the other two that it's a fun place to be. lol
I do agree that males can be more difficult, but I’ve also never owned females and I think that they’re only harder when it comes to the bonding/bonds breaking, but nothing else.
With the comment of children shount have pet ok so I'm 12 year old going in 13 I have a guinea pig of my own my mom dose every so often care for her but I never taken her to the vet and I had her since August of last year and now I feel bad for not taking her to the vet what should I do??
If they’re not sick there’s no worries, so don’t bother taking mine for check ups if they’re not sick and I’m health checking. It’s kinda like how much people wont pay to go to the doctors office when they feel fine and are healthy!
Definitely make sure that at least you are doing the weekly weighs of your pigs to monitor that. I usually only take mine in when they have something wrong with them. Though been dealing with one of my females has had health issues since September so she has been going at least once a month because of that. She is my oldest currently though at about 6.5 years
I'd love to see you do a video on how you prepare in case of an emergency like a tornado. I have 4 pigs and it's stressful getting their travel cages ready and having to rush them to my brothers basement.
I've switched mostly to orchard grass for mine after talking with the vet because I've had pigs with bladder stones in the past. I've found that they eat more of that than the timothy hay as well. I do try to mix it up every so often with oat hay and sometimes the timothy hay.
I enjoy watching ferret and guinee pig (I know, I know, they are very different) videos, but I wouldn’t want to own one. It’s like watching pet horses and pigs. Horses and pigs are great but, for me, I enjoy these kinds of pets like grandparents enjoy grandkids. Love them lots, but leave it to their parents to do all the work, have all the responsibility, and expenses.
I am 13, I thought i did research enough beofre getting one but didnt and they are lots of hard work. I do take care of them but my parents help with food and vet bill cost!
My 2 guinea pigs are an Abyssinian Peruvian mix (I believe...), so their hair is not exactly short. I took them to the vet for the first time and they did not recommend me bathing them because she said it could give them respiratory issues. She did though, recommend dry pet shampoo and brushing.
some vets may not recommend bathing & some people don’t bathe & that’s fine! I was just saying you *can* bathe occasionally if needed. Respiratory issues could occur if the water isn’t the right temp or they’re not dried fully before returning to the cage.
Unless you have a group of male pigs you shouldn't really advise people against having them or saying they are harder to keep. I've had multiple boys, of different ages and personalities, successfully bonded babies and adults and have yet to find one that isn't the greatest little man ever.
I literally didn't advise against males. I just said they can be more difficult in terms of bonding and people should be prepared for that. I shared my personal experiences. I did used to have a male pair, and their bond broke.
Regarding floortime, I used to leave the cage open for most of the day and lined the whole room with liners for them to explore, but as they became adults and the hierarchy became established, they lost interest in leaving the cage where all the food/hay are.
Oh that's interesting! It's difficult to do floor time with mine because my intact males are on the floor so I have to keep a very close eye if I decide to do it.
I agree about the holding. My youngest girl was pregnant when she was 5 weeks old. And she was in pain as a young age so she doesn't like to be held. Put my older girl love being cuddle.
What’s your opinion on boar pocket cleaning? My male is still young so I haven’t dealt with that yet but the thought that I’m going to have to makes me really nervous..
I clean mine as needed! My older male needs it more. You don't want that gunk piling up in there, but you also don't want to do it too often so I only do it when it looks dirty
I was surprised to see the “minimum” recommend cage size for 10 pigs is a 3x8… I have 3 pigs in a 3x6 w/ 14”x14” grids, which seems like a good size. There’s a little over 8 sq ft (2x3) per pig. I couldn’t imagine adding a pig or having 8 pigs in that size. Cram City! Side note: I adore your pigs! Such cute little floof butts! 🌼 Great videos Autumn!
I've now space (expandable) to get 4 piggies yay. I had no idea how much space they need. Now they have too much LOL. Every time I open the fridge I hear weeeek, weeek, weeek. They learn quick & know where the lettuce and cucumber is.
I agree, even if the sweet piggie needs to live seperate, have them seperare but let them see & hear the other piggies thru their enclousure. Orchard Hay is a legit subsitute for Timmothy Hay if needed. 🙂
Couldn’t agree more with the children owning a pet conversation, my guineapig Albert has to have surgery next week & it doesn’t come cheap, the whole family has to be hands on as well. My two boys were adopted by me because the children who had them previously were neglecting them & rough handling them as well.
I feel like that children don't have much knowledge on how to take care of a guinea pig and don't have people to tell them how to take care of them to I think that people are overly aggressive to children who just weren't taught certain things.
I agree. When I was about 7 my mom got me and my sister who is older than me a hamster each. I took great care of my hamster while my sister lost interest and starved hers to death (my mom made it clear they were our responsibility 100%). Unfortunately for mine he got pink eye that I gave to him (I had pink eye then held him like I did everyday since the day I had gotten him) and my mom made it seem like she was trying to help him but never took him to the vet so he died from pink eye.
Vets are so stupidly expensive in the USA! Crazy! I've never in my 25 jeans of owning guinea pigs spent over 500$/€ on surgery (including aftercare). And I have had to do some big surgery's over the jears. Unbelievable. Love your chanel 💕
I've had a male and a female guinea pig and I prefer males 😅. He was a short haired piggy so he didn't stink at all, and I loved his perky personality! Daisy, my female she never wanted to be held and she would always hide. Unfortunately, they both passed. 😕 But I am soon going to get 2 males!
I have two females in a 9 sq feet cage and I live in a small studio apartment. I give them half the day for floor time at least 3 times a week. Opinions? I’m going to try to make the cage bigger but I really don’t have a lot of space.
9 square feet is ok! 10 would really be better but if you don't have the space than you don't have the space. Guinea pigs can be active at night often, so that's why a larger cage is more important than floor time
Since you are 13 you are unable to drive your pigs to the vet when needed, so you can’t do everything and do need a parent or adult to assist with their care.
I would love pt 2 💕 BTW I do agree on how kids can't own small pets. Most of small pets have been marketed toward children. I'm 13 and I got my 2 females at 11 years old. Me and my parents thought it would be an easy pet for me, along with my parents help. I take full responsibility, other than vet visits and pretty much any driving involved. Before I got them I did tons of reasrch and knew they would be hard to take care of but didn't really understand the responsibilities until I got them. People think guinea pigs are very cheap pets but this is only because they are not taken care of properly. Guinea pigs need tons of space, go through much hay and pellets and veggies if you feed them. Pigs are NOT cheap whatsoever. Between vet visits which could be around 70$ per pig and just overall food supply. Also if you need antibiotics or other stuff as well as surgery, that can be even mere expensive. An emergency surgery could be up to 1000. When I first got my pigs I was using the Midwest cage. They were babies when I got them, and they had that cage for over a year. Me and my dad recently made a DIY cage and it was wayyy worth it. They ran around doing zooming and you could just tell they loved it! If you are looking into getting piggies always do research and understand that you will be spending lots of money, time, and effort. Guinea pigs are not for kids, without a responsible adult.
I’ve only had males, and they were all great. However, I have two males now, Cinnamon and Piglet. Cinnamon is laid back like all of my previous Guinea Pigs were. Piglet is crazy. lol If Piglet was my first Guinea Pig, I’d probably never have Guinea Pigs again. I love him but he would definitely stress me out if I never owned any before. lol
I've two girls, Bela and Amaya. Bela is the crazy one, scared of heights, grinds her teeth when you hold her. Only concern with piggies is they can smell if you are not on top of their cleaning.
11:16 I totally disagree on a certain degree. Yes, those tiny hay balls are bad and a bend C&C grid is only good if it’s the right size which is a 9x9. I’ve never had a problem with this being an issue with any of my 17 pigs. I have no issues with this and it works for me and my pigs, therefore I don’t necessarily need to change the way I give my pigs hay. I’ve tried both haypiles and litter boxes and both don’t work. For haypiles, since guinea pigs need hay all the time, there is going to be a huge pile of hay and the guinea pigs are gonna end up spreading it everywhere, so might as well fill the whole key with hay, which is not a suitable bedding. And same thing happens when I have litter trays that are low to the ground for my senior pigs and my pigs who have arthritis. Same thing might as well cover the whole cage in hay. And what’s up with the burger thing? Like bruh, maybe French fries. Hay is not nearly as close as a burger lmao. Get your sizing correct.
Even French fries would be annoying to pull through bars, so 🤷🏼♀️ Pigs make mess, so when hay piles spread, you just clean it up. It’s about what’s most enriching for the pet not what’s easiest for the owner. For my Guinea pig with osteodystrophy, I just set a pile of hay on the ground. No litterbox for her so she doesn’t have to worry about climbing into anything. If you don’t want to try hay piles, hay bags are a great option like I said in the video. I have 9x9 grids and I can’t imagine making my pigs work for something that should be 80% of their diet.
Agreed 👍

thank you! she's doing better, I'm going to have some updates on her in my next vlog!
@@autumngrace. can't wait for it! :)
I love your intro! I’d love to see more videos like this one on your channel. ❤️
I have 3 Adults Pigs and 1 Baby (All Female) I have a 2 x 6 with a 2 x 2 loft is that a okay size?? I just upgraded 😅
Put my older girl love being cuddle.
yes! I think a lot of it depends on personality and I don't think it's essential to hold them, especially if they dislike it
What’s your opinion on boar pocket cleaning?
Thank you! It would be cram city for sure!! I think the minimums need a bit of an update 😉
@@autumngrace. I agree with you on that!
Oh yes of course, I use orchard as well!
Yeah.....it was $500 just for an emergency visit that included x-rays. No surgery. Prices are crazy over here.
Thank you!
Hiii lol I am a child who owns 4 piggies! They live there best lives!🥳😎
Guinea pigs can be active at night often, so that's why a larger cage is more important than floor time
@@autumngrace. I've upgraded to 12 sq ft :)
Love the new intro!
thank you!!
am i a child lol? i have 3 guinea pigs and i am 13. i pay for everything and i do everything! 😢😃🥳🤩😱
Since you are 13 you are unable to drive your pigs to the vet when needed, so you can’t do everything and do need a parent or adult to assist with their care.
Awesome video. Your piggies are so adorable❤
Great informational vid!
👍
My 2 girls have about 20sq feet!!
Thank you so much for this comment, very well said! ❤️
Hey autumn! Is it normal for guinea pigs to urinate red but with some normal white! I’m kinda worried if my two guinea pigs are sick!
Hi, if they are peeing red they should see an exotic vet.
@@autumngrace. omgg thank you for telling me now I need to panick and take them to the vets 🥲
Even French fries would be annoying to pull through bars, so 🤷🏼♀️
Pigs make mess, so when hay piles spread, you just clean it up.
