Sparkplug gets left behind when all of the Autobots believe they have a major Decepticon problem at Maharaja. In truth, the Decepticons put one over on them to leave their base vulnerable and kidnap Sparkplug. Dr. Arkeville enslaves Sparkplug for Megatron with a hypno-chip as a test of the device. It works and more humans will soon follow. Megatron has a dangerous new scheme in the works, and it includes a new space bridge. As for Sparkplug, it is decided that he can better serve Megatron when among the Autobots, ultimately making them vulnerable to a new attack.

Common trope in these old shows, actually.
It actually makes sense, though. Humans are capable of doing many amazing physical feats, but our brain automatically puts a limit on ourselves. That is why, under distressing situations, people can do superhuman things that they normally can't do. Being hypnotized removes those limits.

I’m not normally one to pit specific iterations against each other but I find it weird an 80s cartoon has a more realistic depiction of two planets being this close in orbit than a 2011 Hollywood film. You’d think Micheal Bay would’ve jumped at the chance to show some destruction

The Ultimate Doom & Countdown To Extinction which made up of 4 parts was the best story arc of season 1, it felt very big, the storytelling was on a much larger scale than usual and the Decepticons working with a mad scientist who helped brainwash humans into being their slaves was a stroke of true genius. It was one of those rare times it felt like the Autobots actually lost and having Sparkplug corrupted to switch sides with evil made things really personal while adding a lot of emotion to the stakes. This was definitely the highlight of the show.
Nah you forgot about Megatron's master plan two part series. he nearly got rid of the Autobots in that one which I was hoping for since I'm a decepticon fan

I also feel the drawing and animations were also better than the rest of Season 1.. They spent more time on it and there was less "errors" in the animation.. The Ultimate Doom is one of the most memorable story arcs of the Transformers and it had actual character development. It was beyond its time..

I love the climax where Megatron makes Prime complete activating the space bridge. He really knew how to anticipate what Optimus would do. And I mean Prime only had a few moments before Cybertron was lost forever.

You want gangsta? Megatron could've plucked any human for use as a "guinea pig", but decided to troll the Autobots using a set-up to grab Spike's dad.
For all the flaws of this series, The Ultimate Doom is certainly the most suspenseful and action-packed storyline of the show. The stakes much larger than just Decepticons stealing energy, the situation getting worse for the Autobots for each episode, and Megatron using the very thing the Autobots swore to protect against them.
And then this storyline was very poorly adapted and retold 27 years later in Transformers: Dark Of The Moon.

You have to admit, this episode in particular has a solid plot.
All the Bay movies are great. Even though The Last Knight stripping Galvatron of his abilities and then just calling himself Megatron was beyond stupid lol.

I remember the first time I saw Cybertron coming through the space bridge. I was all like “oh hell what NOW?!?”
Kinda surprised that DARK of the MOON was slightly inspired by this episode where they transported Cybertron to Earth using the Space Bridge then use the humans as slaves for Cybetron....
even weirder when as someone else pointed out, console/pc copies of revenge of the fallen's video game had the ultimate doom 1-3 as episodes you could unlock.
Revenge of the Fallen also used 'Changing Gears' as a source, both involve the Decepticons using a machine to suck up energy from the Sun.

@@DekaNovelist No one was comparing the two. Stop hating on Bay movies. Bay movies revitalized the fanchise. The Transformers franchise was dying, but the 2007 movie brought in new fans and money. There were reports that after the movie, everything involved Transformers flied off the shelves, including leftovers from older toylines.

After school in the 80's were great times. Transformers followed by GI Joe at 4pm. Cobra Commander and Starscream were voiced by the same guy.

Well, he never was crippled by an electric surge and ended up being converted into a Cybertronian.
This is one of the episodes I remember the most out of season 1. And its one of my all time favorites. Solid plot, solid material.
The technology in this episode is outstanding, a space bridge to get to another planet, and water skies to get to another country 😉👍

I am now finding out I'm one of many people of my age group (I'm currently 19 in college basketball) that watched this on the Revenge of The Fallen PS2 game. the game had 3 unlockable episodes which all happened to be the ultimate doom.
I knew of g1 after I watched the 07 movie but this was my first introduction.
I had found out about G1 through that method too, also, with my mother making me aware of it. Then I've watched the re-runs on The Hub.

The more I see episodes like this (ie: focus on humans) and I think that Transformers is basically a Super Sentai Sentai show, just one where the heroes turn into their own vehicles.
This episode was the very first i had seen of this gem of a series and I’m thankful my dad introduced me to it.

In DOTM Cybertron getting in the orbit of the Earth produced...only a little bit of wind, some papers fly by (really weird and extreme for Chicago!)
The worst change was the size of Cybertron. A planet the size of Jupiter getting near Earth would annihilate it.

Surprisingly enough....there's a good amount of scientific concepts applied in G1, I've noticed.
The descriptions of how gravity works. The use of acid rain to slow down the Autobots.
The constant references to the robots running out of energy, and how often they have to pillage powerplants to recharge.

@@Darth-vade123 well, I'm not an 80s kid, so this is all new to me, but I must say; for a "cheesy 80s cartoon" ....its surprisingly grounded in real science.
For example, as I am watching this now, I remember an older G1 fan mentioned that the autobots are more energy efficient....and this is actually shown in the cartoon where after an extended battle, megatron actually admits that he's used up too much energy.
Not only is the show mostly consistent with its science... the robots are also shown to make great use of logic in the way they strategize against each other. And apart from the transforms being advanced robots...everything else in the show is logically consistent
For exame... I thought the writers were going to foolishly show the human slaves somehow beating up the autobots ...which wouldn't make any sense....since the autobots are much larger and could easily overpower humans in a direct fight.
But instead the human slaves are used to quickly gather energon for the decepticons, and to create decoys that slow down the autobots....that makes more sense.
It certainly makes more sense than what was shown in the live action movies... eg Cade Jeager holding back a transformer knight with a sword 🙄

I see a lot of heavy influence on this episode by the classic sci-fi “The Man from Planet X”. An alien comes to earth in a spaceship and brings his planet to Earth orbit. Humans are brainwashed to assist. When the planet does approach it causes natural disasters and high winds briefly. The spaceship even looks like one of Megatron’s pylons
This part of the series always reminded of the pilot episodes of Gobots.

How? Protecting humans is Autobots' duty. Letting the humans died doesn't do anything good to the Autobots. Bayverse Optimus let a lot of people died in the battle of Chicago in Dark of the Moon and that lead to humans losing trust in the Autobots and turned against them in Age of Extinction. The same thing happened in IDW comic where Optimus let Megatron killed 1 billion humans.
This is one of a few times Cybertron was brought over to the Earth. The other times were Dark Of The Moon & The Last Knight but Cybertron's size varies in the film series.🤖🤖🤖🤖🤖🤖🤖
In this episode I’ve just realised Jazz from Transformers and Roadblock from GI Joe are essentially voiced by the same actor I would guess, and Prowl and Duke I reckon are voiced by the same actor
Jazz was voiced by Scatman Crothers. Roadblock was voiced by Kene Holiday. However, Michael Bell did voice both Prowl and Duke.

Of course. There are probably millions of transformers all over the planet simply in stasis lock because there was no power to charge them.
But the Decepticons from Seasons 2 & 3 were also on Cybertron. The Female Autobots were still fighting Shockwave whom Megatron left in charge on Cybertron. Don’t forget the Autubots & Decepticons from the brief US Season 4 & the Japanese Headmasters series.
Damn, maybe in another timeline, Elita One showed up early?

After rescuing Sparkplug’s body the first time, why didn’t the Autobots take him to a hospital for observation. Or at least do an MRI, PET, or CT scan on Sparkplug at Autobot HQ? Or why don’t Tele Tran One detect Sparkplug’s Hypno Chip when the Autibots initially brought him back in? Perhaps Tele Tran One had the ability to detect a PACEMAKER.
In the episode ATTACK OF THE AUTOBOTS, Tele Tran One detracted the changes in the Autubots’ minds (caused by Megatron’s personality destabilizers that Megatron placed in the Autobots’ recharging chambers) prior to Megatron ordering the Autobots to destroy Tele Tran One.

Megatron was a worthless piece of scrap, but I'll give him this. He had a knack for using Optimus Prime and the other Autobots compassion and honor against them to get the upper hand.

It's amazing how elaborate Megatron's plans to get energy are while glibly ignoring the giant fusion engine in the sky.
Elements of this multi parter noticeably bared similarities to the opening episodes of Challenge of the Gobots.
A few things that would have been better for this episode are the following:
1. The Autobots who go with Optimus Prime to stop Starscream, Thundercracker and Skywarp from raiding the Maharaja’s Palace are the following:
Hound, Sideswipe, Sunstreaker, Jazz, Wheeljack, Brawn and Jetfire.
2. At the Ark have Ironhide Prowl, Trailbreaker, Mirage, Bluestreak, Ratchet, Spike, Sparkplug, Bumblebee, Windcharger, Cliffjumper, Huffer, Gears, Grimlock, Slag, Sludge, Snarl and Swoop at headquarters.
Soundwave ejects not only Rumble, Laserbeak and Ravage. He also ejects Frenzy, Buzzsaw and Ratbat.
3. The Autobots that go to rescue Sparkplug fro z Decepticon Headquarters are the following:
Optimus Prime, Prowl, Hound, Sideswipe, Sunstreaker, Jazz, Bluestreak, Mirage, Gears and Sludge.
Mirage goes ahead to destroy the scanner.
Windcharger, Cliffjumper, Brawn, go and attack from underground and meet up with Mirage.
Wheeljack and Bumblebee can stay headquarters with Ratchet, Ironhide, Trailbreaker, Spike, Huffer, Grimlock, Slag, Snarl, Swoop and Jetfire.
4. The Autobots that go to stop Megatron and the Decepticons (Frenzy will be there) activating the Pylons are the following:
Optimus Prime, Ironhide, Prowl, Hound, Sideswipe, Sunstreaker, Trailbreaker, Mirage, Bluestreak, Wheeljack, Spike, Bumblebee, Windcharger, Cliffjumper, Gears and Brawn and the Omnibots (Powerdrive, Camshaft and Downshift).
Ratchet, Huffer, Jetfire and the Dinobots are at the Ark.
Similar to how Ratchet was betrayed in the comic book majority of the time.
4. When Shockwave is waiting for Megatron to activate the pylons. Have Thrust, Dirge, Ramjet, Blitzwing, Astrotrain and Octane with him.
Will be interesting what other people think.

Spoilers for Kirby and the Forgotten Land are in this post. I hopefully have covered them up with the "Read More" function.
I learned this from Kirby, but the tidal effects triggered by Cybertron entering Earth's Orbit are called the "Roche Limit". Cybertron's Gravity is causing such intense Tidal Forces that it's ripping Earth apart. I learned this from the name of the song that plays when you fight Fecto Elfilis, "Two Planets Approach the Roche Limit", where, after the boss fight, Fecto Elfilis, falling apart, summons a portal large enough to send Planet Popstar, Kirby's Home World, in collision course with the New World. That's the Roche Limit. Essentially, "Two Planets Approach the Roche Limit" can be translated into "When Worlds Collide."
I grew up watching G1 transformers. Although Dr. Arkeville was kinda dorky, I liked the overall concept of the episode. I remember as a kid being kinda fascinated by the idea of the hypno-chip and wondering what it would be like to be under its control. As an adult, I think it'd be great to have a hypno-chip installed...it sure would make the workday go by quicker, lol.

This is the first time in the series, shipping Cybertron to Earth! it's gravitational force will cause natural disasters around the world: earthquakes, tidal waves and hurricane force winds, the exact equivalent to Terror Star's gravity wave propulsion from the anime series Thunder Sub.
Try to watch "Autobot Spike" before "Ultimate Doom" then watch "Changing Gears" after "Countdown to Exinction".
My absolute dream is to know how they made all the sound effects… (guns/canons, transformation, SoundWave voice…)
I would LOVE to see which synthesizers, the way to use them…
