I'm only about 4 minutes in but I've already learned a massive lesson about lure retrieval speed & general technique. Absolutely the highlight of my week when new content drops - Thankyou - what you do is really valued - respecting the fish & helping newbies massively 👊🏻
This is a really good upload mate. So many nuggets of information for fishing in the dark. You manage to capture that spooky excitement of feeling the bass on and it coming through the dark. Here 850miles south we have more man made noise and lighting to contend with but I think the bass are not as easily put off as yours on that open coast. Always learning with these fish. I’d urge everyone to watch all this video through again because I think we could End up catching better Bass if we take action on it. I have found with those stick type lures holding the rod tip low adds little bumps as the waves roll over the braid. Interesting to see your higher tip and will try that way too. Good work - More videos like this please
I'mEnjoyed your night lure session, my Forte! Anyone contemplating lure fishing at night for the first time should know the mark well by a daytime reconnaissance or if this is not possible fish the ebbing tide eliminating the risk of being cut off from behind, especially on an open surf beach or raised reef. This advice supercedes anything over lure type, white or red light, speed of retrieve size of tide and type and strength of braid and leader. Safety is paramount when lure fishing for bass at night.
Back-filling isn't a problem on the flat beaches I fish from at night, even the biggest sandbar is only about 30cm, but I should have considered other locations and highlighted the risks. Sound advice, Keith! Glad you liked the vid
Excellent video, especially on the lure retrieval. I always find that’s the sticking block as it’s hard to believe that you’d work a lure so slowly. Only other tips I’d say for anyone reading is to reiterate on safety. Always have a spare head torch on you and make sure you are comfortable with your surroundings, especially if the visibility deteriorates. Nothing worse than a flooding tide and thick fog to get you unsettled.
Great video and well explained technique. Very very few vidoes showing this technique, in fact very few bass lure fishing videos show and explain techniques at all. When I was learning I kept blanking fishing soft plastics with not enough weight in too deep water and reeling too fast. Then I discovered weedless jigheads, casting out letting it hit bottom, flicking it up and then a slowish straigbt retrieve just off the bottom, and I started finding some nice Bass. Definitely going to try this next season on shallower marks, I've never caught on a weightless soft plastic, but think thats mainly due to the deeper marks I fish.
Fantastic video. It’s hard to keep it so slow (as you said) but your demonstrated success helps with the motivation. I was surprised that you didn’t do too many twitches. I think I must overwork my stick baits. 73cm is a fantastic fish on lures - well done!
Love fishing at night in pitch black, just a completely different atmosphere and the hits are more exciting. Hats off to you Nat for putting the time and effort into getting the footage, it’s not easy. Would be interesting if you go down the route of an IR camera to get footage, not seen many do this yet. There are some really good equipment available these days, just so damn expensive!
My pleasure! Yeah they are expensive, but there are IR conversions for Gopro available. My worry though, is that I don't know if fish can see IR light- it could be worse than shining a torch on the water.
Great video, it should inspire people to get out there after dark. I fish a white BassStick on my marks, 20g plus a 7/0, along with 30lb braid. I rivet big holographic eyes on too, glue doesn't stand up to being dragged through the rock and kelp. I'll have to check out Albie Snax. I fish it just like you, the slower the better, and get some heart stopping pulls. Sometimes it's tempting to try something else, especially if there's not much action, but I find it pays to just keep on winding, for one thing it's an efficient way to fish rough ground, and I lose very few lures. You definitely conveyed the anticipation and excitement of lures in the dark, that hit out of the blue at 03.00 that makes you wish you had worn undies beneath your thermals. Hanging on for dear life as a lump kites over the reef, heart thumping stuff. Thankfully we've got settled weather so I'll be on the night shift a couple more times at least before November is out, and hope it stays warmish. Good luck.
Well done getting the video done in such dark conditions. I’m amazed that fish will take a lure in the pitch black, I hadn’t realised they would. Well done on the fish 👍
That's it, you've inspired me Nathan 👍 I'll be out one night midweek, never thought about night fishing for bass before. Very snaggy where I go though so with that slow retrieve it'll have to be top water though. Great video, very, very informative. Nice one mate 👍
Give it a go mate, it's a brilliant way to fish for them. I use the same technique with the Albie Snax over snaggy ground too. It runs very shallow, almost neutral buoyancy, especially with a light gauge 5/0 or 6/0 hook on so works a treat over snaggy ground too. I tend to up my braid to 20lb in those conditions. Hope you get amongst them!
Never thought id be watching a black screen for 20 mins but here we are 😅 Mate was still a good video despite lack of graphics lol......I've never thought to have a bash spinning for bass at night but will be giving it a try next time in oot for a late session ✌
A very good video, although most of it was in the Dark, but hey, really valuable information you give , I’ve fished the Dark along the coastline on the Algarve,I’ve always caught when that sun is just up,thanks again for another cracking video.😎🎣
Great stuff. Just one of the reasons I prefer a lower retrieve ratio in a reel. I don't bass fish anymore having moved inland. But recently treated myself to a new Shimano Twin Power from Japan for pike fishing. Went for the lowest gear ratio option. To work lures slowly and for more winching power. You can always reel faster if you need to.😂 It's harder to slow down a high speed reel. I used a Shimano Rarenium in my bass days. Another slow coach of a reel. Anyway thanks for the online bass fix.
Very good session, and a good lesson👍 Our local rivers have a reputation for being bass-less after dark on lures, but i’m thinking the slow retrieves i’ve tried are still way too fast. Note made to self to keep going and slow it down a lot more.
@ its getting near the end of season in our Essex rivers, but i’m gonna give it a go on the last of the ebb and over low water which is just after dark this afternoon.
Been binge watching your channel.. learning the craft, new to sea fishing. Blanked today, was windy and sea was very choppy. You reckon days like that are normally a write off? I went same place last week and got dozens of mackerel...
This was great. All the info super clear. The Albie Snax seems to have been doing the biz at night for a long time. Especially your 3 year old one 😊 Will get some in. What was the hook pattern you mentioned? Cheers
A really inspirational video beautifully articulated with superb explanation. I have never really given much thought to lure fishing at night but down where I live on the Dorset coast there must be some great opportunities and I will definitely give it a good go. A couple of questions if I may: do you find that the technique works well into winter, after all we are already into the darker nights of November. Also, I assume that you are using a dedicated red light rather than some sort of filter on your ordinary white beam headlight, is this correct and if so can you recommend a specific brand of red light? Once again, many thanks for a great video.
Have you found certain marks fish better at night than others? I lure fish around Dorset but my regular spot has never given me any bass at night yet, regardless of tide state. No idea whether it’s me or the fish as I’ve had cracking sessions at the same spot in the morning.
Interesting, I mainly fish a shallow harbour where it enters the sea and always see baitfish in the weed there at night. No idea why the bass aren’t hunting them but I guess I’ll try a nearby beach to see if they’re hiding there.
I live in Exmouth,East Devon..When the water’s clear I fish my local marks in the dark with no one else around and do very well..Soon as the light starts to show people turn up and wonder why they aren’t catching 😂😂
Three nights ago on All Hallows Eve I fished a cold black reef. Too deep and too far from shore, I wondered if I had marked an old friend or a phantom stone to sound the incoming tide before the raven feathers of night fell to blind my watch. The last curlew winged her way anxiously ashore and frighted away to see not a fixed perch upon which to alight, but the darkling and shivering shoulders and head of a man lapping low in the water where none should be. She called an alarm and slipped away to fall silent under night wings. No wind, no rain and no sound save the lapping of the boundless sea, too close now to my lonely neck for calm comfort. Starless and moonless, the clouded glowering dark stalked my isolated and too buoyant steps. And no fish. I was winding too feckin' fast. I'll sithi after! I hope. Happy Halloween. Dave.
you will need to get service's night vision goggles', just try not to scare other anglers, lol, what am I saying use a sharp stick to wake them up lol.

Great vid Nath ! thanks for all the tips for night time beach fishing . Much appreciated mate !
This is literally exactly what I needed recently

Brilliant video thank you. So informative and a great demonstration of why sound quality is more important than video quality. Thank you.
Awesome as always Nathan buddy!
Really enjoyed that mate.
Well done indeed!
Thank you - great, common sense advice, and pictures don't lie. Must dig out my pear and lemon bach Snax for another go!

I liked the video, didn't matter to me that it was mostly dark. Looks like a really nice way to fish. Tight lines!

Well done on the fish 👍
Great vid Nathan. Thanks for sharing. 👍🫶
Enjoyed the video ..very well explaind this is exactly how I do it ..and the Albi Snax is my favorite lure at night as well😊
Great video nathan , different type of video .. really enjoyed it thanks .. tight lines 🎣
Excellent video and really useful advice .. many thanks and tight lines 😊🎣👍
Excellent! Some good points made, I will try them out at the estuary I fish next year, thanks mate!
Hope they work for you! Tight lines👍🎣

It’s the only time I fish for them at night something about a night that hits different.
Never thought id be watching a black screen for 20 mins but here we are 😅

Also the red light info was appreciated. New info for me and I'll be ordering new one. Cheers
haha, I never thought I'd make a podcast! 🤣
Thanks for persevering, glad you got something out of it, and hope you get amongst them. Tight lines👍🎣
Well that was a bit different Nathan, great catch in the inset ! nice chunky bass 👍🏼 appreciate your efforts mate 🎣👍🏼

I reckon the rivers are a perfect place for the bass to feed after dark!

Really informative yet again Nathan; that 73cm beauty must’ve been a right pull in the dark! Top tips - good stuff! Be well, G.

Definitely! Quite a few of my day time marks don't fish after dark and vice versa. I tend to fish for cleanish to clean beach marks at night
Interesting, I mainly fish a shallow harbour where it enters the sea and always see baitfish in the weed there at night. No idea why the bass aren’t hunting them but I guess I’ll try a nearby beach to see if they’re hiding there.
loving your videos ! could i as what lure it was you were using please and thanks.
It's called Albie Snax by a company called Fish Snax. Hope this helps

Blimey you and Dave joined at the hip???, both bass fishing during the NE Cod season??
The bass is a great way to spend time when the cod conditions aren't great. Divvint fret though, cod video next week! Tight lines David!
Gud watch as usual, i mean listen 😂. Get out on the cod Nathan
Interesting video. Maybe you could try doing a Podcast lol
I thought it was a podcast!
you will need to get service's night vision goggles', just try not to scare other anglers, lol, what am I saying use a sharp stick to wake them up lol.
Aye, they would help over the camera's lens!! Maybe infrared too. I'll leave the other anglers be- you snooze, you lose!!
Hi Nathan. Gave thumbs up but in all truth couldn't see a thing. Sorry
I had to give it a try, maybe an infra red camera next time round. Cheers Randolf!!
