  • Choking is largely preventable and young children are at HIGHEST risk of choking. Work on eating these foods safely at home but DO NOT take these risks by sending high risk choking foods to school where your child is not being watched closely during lunch and snack time. It is not worth it, trust me on this one.

I wouldn't send a fruit cup that has the plastic film over it, because they're hard for them to open themselves. Not a risky food per say, but theres no guarantee that the school will help them open their fruit. My mother sat with my brother's class during lunch and the teachers wouldn't even help the kids open their milk cartons or cut up the giant pizza slices they'd give them. With cookie packets/cheese sticks, pre rip the corner a little bit so its easier for the kid to open by themselves. After hearing the issue at my brother's school, id have my kid only get milk from school and then send lunch that is pre prepped for them.

As adult, I was sad to see that jello jiggler egg molds were discontinued. Then I thought of all the times I nearly/kinda choked on them. I don't know if that's a tradition worth keeping.
