I can’t tell you how refreshing it is to find a REAL review of this vehicle. I’ve lost track of how many garbage videos I’ve sifted through while the owner talks about “the amazing interior” followed by 10 minutes of road noise 🙄 and nothing else. Absolute trash. This solidified my decision to get the Y. Much appreciated!
“Y front all covered in jazz” That’s gold Jonny. I don’t even like modern cars but I never miss one of your reviews just to listen to the way you describe them. You are without a doubt the best car reviewer on TH-cam. Thanks again for all the great content. Cheers.
@@stevenichols4639 Especially a 2 micron thin Tesla paint job! Most cars have a thick clear lacquer coat. A clean brush is no problem. Besides, this isn't his car!!!! 😁
FWIW we replaced a Range Rover with a Model Y for DD and weekend cottage runs. It's a brilliant tool for carrying people in comfort with tons of gear and cheap to run. Perfect? No. Brilliant? Yes. Great review Johnny. Incidentally...I've had 9 911s and I rather like the styling of the Model Y ;-)
I have had a model 3 for almost three years and have just ordered the Y. I cannot find words to describe just how fantastic Teslas are, and have to say that I think they look absolutely amazing. One is normally excited about a new car for the first week or three, then the excitement wears off. Three years down the line I am just excited about my Tesla as I was on day one.
Have you had your eyes tested recently 😂, they're the most bland non-descript looking cars on the road. I've never seen anyone beside a proper fanboy say they look amazing.
@@ChocolateFrog Totally agree, I think they look awful and the interiors just as bad - absolutely nothing apart from that "TV screen" which almost looks as though it's been stuck on the dash as an afterthought because they forgot to put any controls into it, and that god awful plastic centre console. On a cheap car I could understand it, not one at the price of a Tesla.
Thank you for this review! I have had my Y since early March, the sum of its parts makes for a wonderful family car in so many ways. It's my first EV and driving the Y is effortless, the torque and handling is superb, 'one' peddle driving, sound system, the view out. For suspension, I have 19" wheels with pressures set to 40psi, that seems to be the comfort setting. Don't worry too much about the speedo to the left of sight, (or right if in EU etc) it isn't an issue. Set the seat/steering to your profile, partner to theirs, set once, tweak and forget. I have some issues with Spotify not linking, mobile chap will pop out to fix. Don't worry about being labeled a Tesla fan boy, I'm not, it was just, for me, the best car to suit our needs and an easy purchase with respect to lead times. The car is great, in fact it's a joy, it makes you feel good, it makes you look forward to the drive, I am also a 'cool' dad in my children's school!
I'm saving up for an ev, hopefully by 2035 I'll have enough to buy a second hand Renault Zoe, just have to put up with my smokey old banger for another 13 years lol
Have to seen the supposed fix for Spotify? Allow all sources in media settings, change display language to English, let it restart, open Spotify, it should load. Then change language back to British English. Solved it for me.
@@kevhippo oh no, not Facebook lol, deleted that years ago, yeah it's the same with classic cars, join a group and there's plenty of free advice about your car
Really no need to worry about the white fake leather seats. I ran the X for 4 years. The kids did their best to permanently soil them all during that time and when I sold it they were still factory fresh. Agree on the looks though. Beyond challenging.
@@ChocolateFrog I know that the taste is subjective but what are talking about dude?? Its not NEARLY as ugly as the they claim in this video and definitely SHOULDN'T be a dealbreaker when deciding to buy. This car is SUCH an amazing accomplishment by Tesla and an absolute bargain if you compare to other EVs.
@@froggy0162 - I'd agree with that. Test drove the Y and was like "this is like a shit version on my Model 3" rolled around and was too slow.....I need a faster car than my Model 3 now.
@@froggy0162 This is probably going to come as a complete shock, but many people buy cars they cannot afford. I drive a really nice car that I can't afford, done it for nearly 10 years. But, at what cost and sacrifice? Having written that, it's been cheaper and more convenient during pandemic than using public transport, so I can justify and live with it.
What an absolutely excellent 'programme', not just a car review, but enjoyable, thoughtful viewing. And the production level was right up there with TV channels. As an overview of Tesla ownership, it seemed spot on (I don't own one nor any EV), pinpointing the essence of the appeal, their unique app to charging ecosystem, even down to in-car entertainment designed to wile away charging times. Other EV cars look better, better built, much cheaper, but only Tesla is the complete package. This is peak (so far...) LBS car video, cue applause...
I have a MY on order, coming in May. I went for the Y because when you spec up the EV6, ioniq, id4 etc to a similar level to the MY they’re not that much cheaper. Plus you can get a MY with an 8 week delivery time. All the others are close to a year! Then when you take into account the charging network and the larger boot it becomes a no brainier. Tesla are constantly updating the software so the car and infotainment will get better and be kept up to date. I have a 10 year old bmw and it feels so dated now as the idrive system hasn’t been updated. I also have to agree the styling is pretty awful. It was styled in a wind tunnel to give maximum range.
From what I have seen EV6 has worse aerodynamics and battery disappears in Your eyes going over 130km/h. Hyundai Ionic had some coldgate issues and also heating couldn't work while DC charging in winter. Mustang Mach-e in lane assist mode denies to take any turns on highways. Mercedes'es EV have one of highest kwh consumption of them all. Older EVs don't have heat pump, most don't offer front trunk. Tesla does everything right, it ticks all boxes.
That's a very good point. A year is a long time in software development. If you have to wait a year for delivery It will me more out of date when it arrives than one you wait 8 weeks for.
@@matthewjohnson4380 yes true. I ordered 10th March and is coming on 30th June so in the end 16 weeks. Lockdown in Shanghai the main reason for the delay. I think if you order now it’s more like 6 months.
Tesla is like Apple. Its very good at creating an ecosystem. If I could afford a 50k'ish EV I'd get a Tesla for the user experience, build quality might not be as good or the driving experience of traditional car makers. Elon has put money into the bits that matter when using an EV - range anxiety and convenience. Also..... GREAT VIDEO 😁😁😁😁😁
I've owned a Model X for 4 1/2 years. Most trouble free car I own... by a long shot. Not totally problem free, but excellent. Just took delivery of a Model Y, which so far has been fantastic. The driving comfort is firm but doesn't crash over road defects like our Audi S4 or BMW.
Went for the Ioniq 5 basically because of look and comfy ride and dealer 11 miles away, who are actually really knowledge unlike others. Seriously considered Tesla but it's 185 miles each way to the nearest service centre. If they had one within 50 miles it would have been more tempting. I am open to a Tesla one day but loving the Ioniq 5, which isn't perfect but is very good.
I went the other way, I was going to get an Ioniq 5, but ended up ordering a Y after test driving all available to me. (EV6 ioniq 5 i4 Enyaq etc etc) I drive 35k miles a year and the supercharger tipped it for me.
Ioniq 5 is very cool looking, but seriously what service does an EV need? You can change tires anywhere. I went for the Model Y, would love to do trans-European road trips without hassle. And just love the robotaxi potential and other gadget stuff Tesla has. And love the looks.
Tesla will come and fix your car at the workplace or your home or wherever you are (not for bigger repairs but for all the smaller things like some rattling seatbelt. There’s no real need to go for services as a lot of things are software and EV’s have a lot less moving parts and almost no fluids that need to be changed regularly (like ICE cars )
@@emilenossin5098 after watching James and Kate working with clevely EV you soon realise that Tesla's need regular brake servicing to stop them fracturing.
Really nice to see a well balanced review having recently watched Jack's 'camping' trip on Fully Charged. I tested a Y when they first came out and was pretty blown away with the whole package if I'm honest. Prior to that, my only other ev experience came in the form of a BMW i3S which I also thought was brilliant. Realistically not looking to buy for 2 or 3 years yet but I love the tech in EVs even though I've always been a petrol head at heart. Hoping that during this time the coding that surfaced a while back regarding air susp becomes a reality along with head up display. Looks are so subjective but I actually like how they look so clean and unfussy. They're clearly form following function and time and time again they smash the efficiency tests on all the reputable channels. Y for me all day long please 👍
First and foremost, this was a great review, thanks Jonny. Even though the Model Y is seriously ugly, I'd still have it over all the other EVs you listed because it is the best all-round EV that does everything well enough without any major flaws. I really like the looks of the EV6 and the Ioniq 5 a lot more but they each have flaws that put them below the Tesla.
@@Art-Sin the thing with taste in terms of beauty is that we all have our own opinion. Personally I think the Y is ugly. The proportions are all over the place to my eyes. It is probably due to having low drag of course. That being said, I drive a 2009 Prius which is very ugly too.
I'm not sure why he doesn't like look of Tesla cars. They look good now and they will look good 10 years from now - timeless design, what you can't say about any other cars. My favorite is model3, sort of 4 door Porsche look alike.
Outstanding video - informative, objective and excellent production values. In my opinion this is better than anything, on a similar subject, that I've watched on UK TV. The beauty of YT is that channels have the time to deliver this detailed content. Well done to all involved. I learnt a hell of a lot!
Enjoyed your review, I've had a Model 3 for just over 2 years now, I went with the white interior and it looks as good today as it did 2 years ago, it's remarkably easy to keep clean and everything comes off effortlessly.
After owning a Corsa E for the last few months I can totally get the appeal of the Tesla charging network and how seamlessly the app works. Something other manufacturers are way off the mark with. Am home charging when at all possible, limited by the lack of fast chargers in the midlands and increasingly finding fast chargers are almost certainly in use when you arrive at them.
Im not a Tesla fan, but , theres something about the Model Y i like. Like the charging network, and the connectivity. I have heard about build issues on the Model 3, and it surprises me still how sparce the interior is. Jonny, again, brilliant, informative, and you tell it too the viewer in a straight forward way, excellent mate
Agree with pretty much everything in the video. I've had a Model 3 for two years and have ordered another one (replacement, not additional!). The Y was £50/month more on the company car lease scheme and while I would've liked the convenience of the hatchback, it's not an issue often enough to justify £600 per year. The boot's pretty big: luggage for four adults going on holiday is fine and I chucked a bale of hay in this morning. It's just a slightly awkward opening. Most reviews say that the suspension in the Y is noticeably harder and more jiggly - presumably to cope with extra height, so I think the 3 will be better most of the time anyway. Things I don't like: the indicator stalk is rubbish - very unpredictable about when it cancels. The satnav is miles worse than Waze or Google maps. No option for "3D view" so where there are multiple exits or lanes splitting it's much more difficult to work out which one to take. It's also less accurate because it doesn't update often enough. There was a 15 mile 2x4 lane dual carriageway built near me and it took 2 years to be included in navigation instructions (made worse because it showed on the screen so the instructions didn't match the map). I went adrift in Leeds yesterday and I'm sure it's due to a road layout change that's not yet in the nav system (very clear instructions to be in the RH lane of two, but didn't go where the satnav expected). Obviously this would be an issue with almost any other car manufacturer as well, but Tesla gets software updates so it feels like a let down. Final one is the auto wipers. They don't turn on when they should and go into monsoon mode when you use the screen wash. It uses the cameras instead of a separate system like every other manufacturer. It's therefore even worse in the dark when there aren't many objects for it to judge against. So after that, why did I order another? Mostly the charging network. Two years ago it was a really easy decision. Now there's a choice of decent cars which is great, but I think Tesla still just about make the best EV - no one is matching their efficiency and the engineering seems less compromised. And again, the charging. I hope I choose something different in 3 years, but Tesla isn't standing still (the current Model 3 is measurably better than mine in ways that you'll notice) and there's a long way for everyone else to go on charging networks.
EV6 or Ioniq5 for me, but I don't do loads of long journeys so most charging won't be at public chargers, supercharger or otherwise. And yeah those two look great, the Yfront not so much... And great review, really balanced and honest 👍🏻
I'd have the Y for sure. Supercharger and being on the forefront of full self driving. Even though the latter has been very controversial you can't deny that tesla's fsd beta's are the closest thing to full self driving on the actual real world consumer market and i'd love to see it happen in real time rather than like now, from the sidelines.
Well I chose the Mercedes EQB, which was a grave mistake. The original notion being that I wanted a more traditional car (like a dashboard in front of you) and not the spaceship futuristic style of the Tesla. After multiple trips to the dealers for coolant leaks and three times refusing to start and being completely unusable, I test drive the model Y and ultimately then ordered one. By the end of April I will be waving goodbye to my Nov 2022 registered EQB 350 having done approx 7500 miles and collecting my new Model Y LR. It just does so many things better. My experience driving and charging the Y was definitely the deciding factor.
00:27:30 Jonny tursely says "It's hard not to be impressed", looks away and puts on his sunglasses before returning.. Speaking volumes with well-timed silence, true English 🤣❤ I love the authenticity of this show! Appreciated.
Just ordered a model Y today. My wife preferred the ionic but for me that was very plasticky inside. I agree the model Y isn't great looking but the interior is. And interior quality although criticised for me is better than its rivals. It's also the bit I get to look at whilst driving. Others have improved but it's performance is still one of the best. Plus the buying process is straight forward and real term costs Inc putting through a business make it cheaper for me than my previous £34k leased golf GTD doing 15k miles a year.
From what I have seen EV6 has worse aerodynamics and battery disappears in Your eyes going over 130km/h. Excellent review, Jonny. You are doing a great job. I would buy the Model Y over its competitors. I agree with you that Teslas look pretty awful - a generic jelly mould car shape - but interestingly, my kids love the shape. Go figure.
@@baronvonlimbourgh1716 but it's not the same money because with every drive you save as you go... £30-40 per tank and £500/yr maintainance. You would need to buy a cheaper petrol car to match the more expensive EV... so maybe a RAV4 or a Tiguan.
@@baronvonlimbourgh1716 great- buying EV is the solution 👍I am glad we agree...but, @400k NOR ModelY has 25% more range 25% more power 25% more interior/storage room 125% more tech 125% more superchargers... but this is your preference. I respect your EV choice. But Johnny chose the modelY for a road trip for a reason ;)
Tesla has definitely sped things up over the years when it comes to ev technology. Its a race now for the other manufacturers to try to catch up and its lovely to see it unfold on a monthly basis it feels sometimes
I have a Y here in America. If you need just one car, need to tow, need a lot of storage and range there is not a better car. I love it. She's a sentient being.
This is a real review, well done Jonny. If I could afford it I probably would. Then again, I don't do that sort of driving so it would be a bit silly. Perhaps hire one three or four times a year, certainly.
Have a 3. Would have got a Y if it was available in 2021. You don’t buy a family car because it is beautiful, and this is just an excellent family car. (Although agree air suspension would be better, and heads up would be better still). But none of the competitors can touch it for the drive train or the space
As a model 3 driver, I'd have to stay with the Tesla. There's a few things that are annoying about them and things they could do better but I'd find it hard to choose anything else
Great video Jonny. Now I want a model Y but will probably have to wait a while before I can afford one and make do currently with my very comfy 2 year old Toyota Camry Hybrid .
You forgot to mention the Audi Q4 etron, good looking and a proper dashboard and options to customise. Apart from the supercharging structure, good range, software and performance Tesla 3 and Y have some major negatives: 1. No proper dashboard or buttons for basic functions, 2. No real optional extras available. 3. Mandatory glass roof with no screen, 4. Debatable looks and build quality.
I always found them ugly untill my neighbour bought one with the right spec 😅. Looking at it every day, it grew on me. Now price dropped I ordered one. Fact that they know what they are doing with batteries, motors, range, efficiency… I will become a Tesla person and I’m nit afrraid of it (only affraid for the speedtickets my wife will generate 🫣)
Great video. I have had the model 3 for over 2 years and I agree with the points you have made. I like the ID4 and Mach E, but the charging network is the winner. I loathe the lack of physical controls for heating and even wiper blades. It definitely needs a heads up display. I would have taken the Y if it had been available. Let’s see what’s available when I change in 2 years. The options are only getting better!
I've been a Tesla hater for years having had i3, Zoe, eNiro, and ID.3 but I love my Y, the space and comfort and tech are just complete. Sure it's a stiff ride but so was my I3 and it's no worse. The range, efficiency, and supercharger network are just best beyond doubt.
The Model 3 boot is rubbish? I think it’s enormous. Extremely long, and the space under the floor is huge. That said, the Y does have more space in the back- cubbies on either side of the hatch floor in particular are MASSIVE. I agree the Y is very unattractive, the rear seat rattle seems endemic (no such issue on our folding seat 3), and the rearward visibility is somehow even worse than the 3. I just heard you comment on the thin air vent. Hate it. Too often the fan for a/c has to run at speed #6 and it’s just too loud. Just about the worst thing other than the sorta janky trunk lid (I don’t really like sedans).
I must say I really like the looks of Model 3. The non-grille is just so right on a car with no heritage back to when there was a need to decorate a massive cooler in the front. The lines over the "hip" over the rear wheel look really nice too. The Y looks OK, but the proportions of the 3 is better, plus I don't like the plastic wheelarches.
I test drove a Model Y this weekend and at low speeds there is a huge issue with ‘body boom’. With no parcel shelf and huge glass roof the road noise/bumps create a sealed echo chamber that was pretty unbearable. Better at motorway speed but horrible at slow speed.
Got a Model Y at Christmas and plan to buy an aftermarket rolling cover for the back. There are also low cost aftermarket add-ons to reduce road noise...which I won't buy, as I undoubtedly crank its excellent music system!
For me I've put in an order for the Mach-e, the model Y was very practical and the tech was great, but just didn't really do it for me. Different cars for different people 👍
We all know why you ordered the Mache-e brav ;) its because of that "horse" on the hood. Mach-e cant even compare otherwise. I mean seriously, it shouldn't even be in the same conversation, really.
Got my Model Y 3 months ago, and this is a great review. I guess I am lucky in that I like the styling. I wouldn’t call it sexy, but the lines are clean and timeless. My favorite shape is the rear quarter panel. You didn’t mention much about the all glass roof, but I think it has a huge effect on how you feel inside the car. I would entertain upgrading to an air suspension at some point-I think your critique here is spot on. Another thing I may spend on is a small display to go in front of the steering wheel. I’ve seen some that look nice, but the cost is nearly a grand. Thanks for such a great production!
God rid of my Mod3 after 10 months and 2000 miles. Drivers seat creaked badly, to the point of wanting to set fire to it, paint work was not good, and the seats, not perforated, make your back sweat like an ape! On our trip to Scotland it was utterly wonderful. Loved every second of it. Loved the interior, all white. Never been a fan of the outside looks but grew on me. Supercharging was effortless and a joy. So many pros and cons with teslas. Am happy I sold it, for a profit. But was an excellent experience on the whole
Great review but something to bear in mind there are similar BEVs for sale at cheaper prices but once you start adding panoramic roof, heat pump and equivalent extras to match the Tesla the price generally increases past the Tesla price point (been there done that) Here's something that will show the difference between the younger generation and the present car owning generation, I bought a model three and the kids on the street love it but when I mentioned to them I was going to change the standard wheels for alloys they said "why are you going to fit old mans wheels to a modern car?" I'm obviously an old man but it shows the difference between the generations 🤣
We’ve had all sorts of quite interesting cars over the years but the Tesla is the only one that my kids and their friends have shown any enthusiasm for other than my Eunos.
Great video, the white seats are fine, they clean up really easy. I have a Y and would still only buy one because it’s better for everything (road trips included) than anything else and now I would find it hard to change. The other charging networks can hopefully catch up soon though. I think it looks ok, not ugly but more pretty generic maybe. Looks never bothered me.
I've had a Model X for over four years. Baby wipes remove dye transfer from jeans, and leather cleaner was able to remove a pen mark left by a parking attendant. They look as good as new. Just took delivery of a '22 Model Y with white seats.
Jonny, I love the late break show, the reviews, the barn finds, projects of the people. Love the production quality it's clear that you put your heart and soul into TLBS, so what the merry hell was Jonny's bollock cam all about? That's no way to test a connect app OTSOT! They will never let you in the Bitter owners club now.
He's just pointing out that even when you are on the shitter you can open the car, seems like a win to me. I wouldn't curtail my dump to open the car for anyone even if it was -20c outside and the person trying to gain entry was suffering hypothermia.
Super, cheers.Took all Tesla Models, for a test drive last Week,I was blown away by how good they are.I am a very Successful Businessman, and have owned nearly 100 Cars myself,Tesla is the future,on so many levels......
styling as you say is a preference. I prefer it. it grows over time. if people like Porsche design, they can probably like Tesla design😅. but design is like that more due to Aero efficiency.
Jonny you're a beaut. Great review as always. I'm getting in on the Ioniq 5. One year wait list here in B.C. Like the hvac buttons, range of 300 miles in rwd long range spec, insane charging speeds for road tripping, comfortable suspension and seats also for road tripping. Jonny as a recommendation to you ; if you could please start doing acceleration tests from 50 mph-80 mph it would be greatly appreciated. I'd really like to know how quickly you can overtake a slowpoke on a 2 lane road with limited passing space and time. Thnx a million. Keep up the good work.
@@NO3V Active temperature control can do wonders for that. The Tesla “battery conditioning for supercharging" is essentially raising the temperature of the battery for better charge acceptance. Of course, Tesla can only do that because it knows it's headed for a supercharger...
Spot on review! Not only talked about the features but included the ups and downs of the model. Love the way you set up the video with the segments labeled so when I leave and come back I can find where I left off. Great work all in all and very entertaining as well as informative. Thanks - I have subscribed and look forward to seeing additional new content and will spend some time watching previous reviews. A truly professional job. Well done!
For me I'd go for an Ionic 5, I know the Tesla gets more miles per KW than everything else but due to the looks , the lack of interior buttons and the hard ride
Great review Jonny. Had our Y for nearly five weeks. Love it and think it looks ok, especially the rear. Re the price comparison, the Tesla comes very highly specced and if you specced up competitors similarly the prices wouldn’t be far apart and you’d still be lacking the tech and charging network.
@@CrankCyclingChannel I'm in my 3rd EV now, all have had a "firm" ride, particularly uncomfortable at times for the passenger. The bigger the battery, the heavier the car, the harder the suspension to support that weight. The Y has a bigger battery and being taller than the 3 has more weight and body roll to supress, so harder suspension necessary which compromises the ride quality. If/when adjustable air suspension is an option the Y would be far better.
@@maxflight777 I've had it for about 6 weeks now and I absolutely love it. The tech (infotainment and phone app) are unrivaled, the drivetrain is perfect in it's power delivery, recup. with 1-pedal driving, it's efficiency. More space than I could dream of. Great sound system (this one I didn't expect) and seat comfort. Since I share the car with my wife who's a lot smaller the driving profiles are so convenient! Only used Superchargers twice on the same trip, but that was a pleasant and easy experience. Only the suspension could be a bit more comfortable and I hate the Autopilot chimes (even im Joe Mode too freuqent and too loud; I don't need a chime everytime I knowingly activate or disengage AP). And maybe looks, love the back, the front is a bit catfishy.
Had a 3 for years, I regularly do 400 miles with 1 comfort break, the car is always ready before we are. It's well made and really fast. Oh and the white seats are still very very white. Nice to see a review without unfounded hate.
Well I used to agree with you about needing a hud in the car but now that I've owned my Y for a year I don't miss hud nor a front speedo....the center display is just fine once you get used to it. I'm also lucky in that I really like the distinctive exterior styling so you can understand why I'm a total fan!
Excellent work again Sir. I would love one and completely agree with your views but refuse to pay that much money knowing what the components cost to build one. Disrupters always change the “game” but friends have them and quality is still an issue.
I appreciate the tesla tech and the fact they have kicked the automotive industry up the backside. I don’t like the Apple-esqe control they have over your own property such as essentially renting the optional extras to the individual rather than attaching them to the car itself (something that all the manufacturers will no doubt copy as we move to a subscription world). Also any car that had been in a crash (salvage) they disable supercharging unless it’s fixed by them - which essentially renders a salvaged car worthless without supercharging - which will impact insurance costs I suspect
Yeah, that is why i will never go for a tesla either. It is all nice and fine when it is a lease, but not to own. Plus i don't need another corperation spying on my entire life. So many other great ev's out now that actually look good and don't have a tablet sticking out the dash. Especially now the charging network is available to everyone tesla is becomming a car for a certain public specificly.
@@baronvonlimbourgh1716 Agreed - but Tesla have smashed it in terms of charging. Essentially they created all the petrol stations before making the car - you have to admire the commitment and considerable investment that took.
I thought if you had a state inspection done re certifying the car as road ready. And then had tesla tech's go over it. They have allowed cars back in the sc network? Do you also not like free ota tesla improvements to charging, range, performance, navigation, enabling of new features also? 🤔
You seem to have got the optional extras thing wrong. The major ones - FSD, performance boost, and free supercharging are linked to the car, not the owner. Then there is optional monthly subscription (premium connectivity, FSD) which obviously is tied to your credit card, you don't expect the previous owner to keep paying for your use every month?
@@eliotmansfield sure, they where first and made the most of it. And in the process shifted the entire car industry along with them. But they also had to do that to even make their company viable. Who would have bought a tesla if it couldn't be charged anywhere? It always had to be part of the strategy no matter who was the one to pull the cart. The legacy companies not willing to commit to such an investment is why it didn't happen 20 years earlier. But in the end every brand having their own chargers is just a silly proposition so they could never hold on to that advantage for long and the rest of the industry would eventually catch up. And with them actually being car manufacturers first and having many more years experience they are making moves quickly. An ev isn't much different from an ice car in the end. If tesla had started making ice cars nobody would have cared about it. They basicly had a 15 year monopoly on ev's because of that investment but that is ending now. Now tesla will have to actually start competing with the rest of the industry and in my opinion the competition is looking increasingly attractive. I'm sure their product will keep finding an audience though. I don't really see them going anywhere soon. An additional niche brand in the space is very welcome imho. We lost a lot of manufacturers over the last decades sadly enough. I'm just not sure how they will position themselves in the market going forward. Behind the hype and the gadgets there really isn't anything that justifies their premium pricing and they simply are in no way large enough to survive on commodity margins.
I cancelled the Kia ev6 and stayed with Tesla in the end. I have a model 3 performance and a model y. Can’t fault either of them. Not done long journeys in the y yet but in the 3 I’ve been all over the country. It’s so easy.
As a long time EV owner (non Tesla), I have to say Tesla for the supercharger network and the integrated tech. I frequently find myself fighting for charge points when I'm doing long distance; on several occasions a quick 30 minute charge has taken upwards of an hour and a half by the time I've driven through two towns to find a charger that isn't in use or isn't faulty. But it kills me that such a forward thinking brand like Tesla is so conservative with its exterior styling. It’s really hard to get excited about a blob fish.
Thats exactly what EV's are NOT the future. Great for people who have all the time in the world, but not for most people. Battery is going to end up in landfill in 7 years. Not an issue for the 1st buyer, but how its it going to be sold on the 2nd hand market. Its going to be dirt cheap, and very hard to sell. How many people buy 2nd hand phones...not many because the batteries are usually the reason the phone needs replacing. Hydrogen internal combustion engine is a much better future engine.
@@theenglishtrucker1849 *sigh* it's really not, unless you have the space to lug around a pressure vessel for hydrogen. And even then, combustion is not the most efficient way to use hydrogen. And liquefying it just isn't an option, rockets only get away with it because they tank it and use it within the hour, mostly. Tesla batteries have shown very good capacity retention, thanks to actually doing it right and having active temperature management of the batteries. Now, a Nissan Leaf... Yeah, those lost a lot in very little time. But that's one make and model of, by now, many. Also, the longer ranges of today's EVs means that even at 20% loss of capacity, generally considered EoL for batteries, they're actually still at around 250 miles. I could drive across my whole country with that.
@@Validole Well they are not for me. I need to be able to just refuel and go. 430 miles at a time. Plus, if ever stuck on a motorway in the freezing cold, Ill be warm.
@@theenglishtrucker1849 Different people, different needs. I will point out, that electric vehicles don't suddenly lose heating if they stop, and in fact, will be many times more efficient with heating, compared to ICEs. Their heating is a completely separate system from their drive train, so even if you somehow lose the traction motor, you'll still have heating. Not so with a diesel or gas vehicle. Of course, a modern diesel is unlikely to just catastrophically break, when decently maintained, so that's still somewhat moot... But at least you wouldn't be stewing in your own exhaust.
Getting the 19” smooths out the ride. You tested what I have, blue with white and added the acceleration boost for fun. Great snow car. Was only £42K for me in the US though😳.
Imagine I paid $83k(£63k) for mine in Poland. I live in a country that doesn't matter to anyone, everything here is quite cheap compared to advanced western countries, but for Teslas we pay premium.
The most compelling thing about Tesla is that I know that it will be around in 10 years but I very much doubt many of its current competitors will still be able to supply parts. I suspect that all the other EV‘s that are selling for less money than the Tesla are losing a massive amount on each car. They cannot make it up on the volume unless they innovate to the same degree. Tesla has the most innovative production methods of every manufacturer. All competitors are stuck in the last century and have a hard time not doing what they’ve always done which is to punish innovation and stick with what they know very much like the government were you do not get rewarded for breaking the rules. Look what they did to the EV enlightened CEO of Volkswagen; the old-timers eventually pushed him out.
Good review Jonny. Whereas most brands are making EVs because they've been told to, at least Tesla believe in the ethos of electrification and have thought the whole process through. Would have to be a model 3. or possibly the lower powered BMW i4. as not an suv fan.
BTW, about the interior: I too was a bit concerned initially, but 1 year with the Ultra White, and it's perfect. Every smear got away with just a microfiber cloth and a bit of water.
Funny thing is, I find the looks of most Teslas ever so slightly repulsive. However, in the same measure, I find them wonderfully sublime. I’ve never heard what the inspiration for the design stemmed from, but I’d like to believe it involved a great deal of understatement. Because once inside, you can’t help but to become captivated. The tech, layout, and yet again the understated total of it all. Yes’m my pick out of the group you mentioned would definitely be Tesla, especially the “Y”.
Doug, I beg you… go and drive one ? Have a listen to the sound system. Peek at the spacious rear seats and speak to a colleague or friend that owns one. It’s expensive …BUT ; (i) a 320D cooking version is 40K (ii) factor in warranty/ fuel and servicing and it’s , over 8 years the cheapest and safest car you can put your family in. Keep us updated if you buy one !
I got rid of an ID.4. The range is only 199 miles as Which? Have reported and there were loads of software issues. In addition reversing it was frankly dangerous owing to the lack of reversing camera in the UK. It's not comparable to a Model Y, in fact the Y is in a class of it's own. I'm not interested in another junk model.
I got my Y on 1st March after cancelling a Model 3 I’d had on order for 18 months (as I’d got a big dog) and after trying the Kia 6 and the Ioniq 5. I don’t mind the Y’s ride having had a 111R Elise for 10 years (daily driven) and a Jag estate with low profile tyres for 12 which were both harsher rides (having 19” wheels may help). I don’t mind the lack of HUD too, or having to search online to find out how to personalise settings or icons on the touchscreen occasionally. I’m yet to supercharge it having installed a home charger in time, and have since added solar panels so now looking forward to sunny enough days to run the Y solely on sunshine. The efficiency of Teslas and their charging network are big factors, but the quality of the tech and simplicity of the design, which I don’t find ugly, and the effortless speed and acceleration combine to make the Y the only satisfactory choice of EV at the price.
I'm with you on the looks of the Y AND the Allegro - so that's probably two of us 🤣. If I had the money to buy (I don't) I think it would be the Kia EV6 based on looks, warranty, efficiency and interior ergonomics - but the supercharger network is a massive advantage.
Not to forget the EV6 hasn’t got good EV Routing and no preconditioning system, which is quite important to charge fast despite the weather. Not to forget it isn’t as efficient as the Model Y and the software isn’t as good. On the side of looks tho the EV6 is an eyecatcher.
@@Anonym-dx2tp agreed. Tesla is better in the areas you highlighted, I think Kia/Hyundai are the best of the rest and that combined with the looks and interior of the Kia wins for me. As Jonny said it is strange that legacy manufacturers still haven't caught up with the Tesla software.
When I’ve parked my 3 next to an EV6 what’s struck me, apart from how big the Kia is, is that the detailing is really heavy handed in comparison. While the 3 is a bit bland and awkwardly proportioned, it has a subtlety and elegance that the EV6 lacks in the flesh.
@@Olibolio1 wouldn't disagree with that. Personally I quite like the styling of the 3 apart from the front end. The Kia is definitely more heavily styled as you say, but that gives it something of a wow factor compared to the 3, though it may well date more quickly I guess.
Great review. Once again Johnny managed to get things entertaining, factual, funny and’ real’. I really dislike the look of Tesla’s, but the tech and charging are absolutely superb. Got to give it to them. I’d still take a n EV6 though, out of that segment 😁
I would get a Model Y. The supercharger network is great advantage . And the other thing is that the other makers really don’t want to make electric cars. Even if they now make great electric cars.
Love the review Johnny! I'm picking up my first Tesla on Monday, black in/out Model Y Performance. Never been a Tesla fan boy, nor hater. Currently driving ID.3 and Enyaq 80x, but Tesla just got it right, I'm somewhat annoyed with al small software bugs in both ID.3 and Enyaq, VW have just completely messed up with software. ID.3 feels just too cheep for the price we pay here in Sweden, base model with 58kWh battery starts at 45k euros, Skoda on the other hand have raised prices like 3 times since we got our in late October 2021, so 80x Sportline with some extra stuff like airbags in the back is almost 70k euros today. That is just insane amount of money for a Skoda, yes it's a good looking car, good looking interior, but software is just awful and Skoda is not doing anything to improve it for current costumers, we have been promised new software update, but nothing yet and the car has been on the marked for over a year now, it's just embarrassing. Consumption is not that great either, especially during winter months, Tesla is far more efficient. Than small rattles here and there in a brand new car is just embarrassing as well, back passenger side door and even driver door, it's just not ok for that kind of money. Model Y is absolutely not a great looking car, I personally don't hate the looks as much as Jonny, but don't love it either, just think that what it offers in terms of technology, performance, space, efficiency, there is nothing to compare it to. Yes there are cheaper cars on the market, but if you would get the same amount of stuff in ID.4 or Enyaq for instance price difference would not be that huge at all, if any.
It’s worth looking at the app I use in my MG. ABRP(A better route planner) plus an ODB2 dongle give me the same king of route planning as you’d find in a Tesla. With a short range compared to the Y it takes all of the anxiety away. I’d thoroughly recommend any non-Tesla driver try it. It’s a real stress reliever.
Just test drove the model 3 then the y, I’m 6ft5 and I found the drivers seat incredibly uncomfortable in the y. It was digging into my hips on the seat base, never experienced that in any other car. Also it was way too firm for northern roads, it would drive me mad. Got back into a 3 after test driving a y and it was so much better. So we’ve gone for a 3. We’ll see how practical it is, if we’re missing something then we’ll have to get a more practical 2nd car I suppose but I couldn’t live with the y. Although I’d rather a Tesla than the others, just better all round. Might get an x when they come out with the new shape, or a cyber truck if they ever get round to launching one.
I live in Iceland and strangely the Model Y was no more expensive than the Ioniq 5 or Kia EV6. I’ve had a Model Y since December, generally pretty great but the hard suspension is the achilles heel. This is a car that should have had adaptive dampers, it’s FAR too stiff and harsh for everyday driving. The wipers are also rubbish, some “neural net” nonsense instead of a rain sensor that would have cost a few quid and it can’t detect road spray from vehicles ahead
@@joetz1 The cameras are in the wrong place - too far from the bit the driver looks through. They have got better through software updates, but they're still much worse than the ones on my 6 year old Skoda.
UPDATE: Tesla have updated the suspension on the cars coming from the new factory in Berlin, I test drove the Model Y Performance and even though it has big 21” wheels, it rides much better than my Shanghai-built model Y Long Range. So much better that I ordered it!
I used to think they looked weird but I have fallen in love with how the y looks I will buy a y performance when there is air-conditioned seats and the new 4680 cells (probably next year). the tech, performance and practicality you get with the y is unmatched and its not even close. even before you bring up the supercharger network.
LOL. Yes Jonny it's plain like vanilla ice cream. I think it'll age well. We placed an order for a TMY LR in Canada a few weeks ago after checking out Audi Q4 eTron (none to see/order 2023 maybe), Volvo XC40 Recharge (test drove it too), Hyundai Ioniq 5 (able to sit in it, a sold one), VW ID4 (nothing at the dealership to even bother), Mustang Mach-E (found 2 at a dealership to check out, didn't drive it and was offered them for $10K CDN over MSRP), and finally the TMY LR. It was surprising to see that it didn't cost a whole lot more than the others with pricing that locks in for delivery around Oct-Jan. The tech and future OTA upgrades are untouchable. Plus, the Supercharger network, the batteries and battery management system looks to be best by far, it can tow a trailer with ease, and believe it should the best to own for a long time. We usually keep our cars 15 - 25 years. Like most of the car, Tesla's body panels are aluminum alloy and shouldn't rust. BTW, my 2007 Chrysler 300C SRT Design Group performance suspension is firm. I found the TMY to be perfect for me with handling that might come in handy in emergencies as well. Time will tell. Thanks Jonny and to your friend RSEV for loaning his car.
Great down to earth review which emphasised to me why I ordered a Model Y, Supercharger network, flawless software & app and a practical boot/storage I'm looking forward to a couple of road trips myself
3:20 Also brilliant thing about the process of plotting a course on EVs is that some cars will pre-heat the battery for the charge to optimize it for the charge. Coldgating is a terrible curse up here in the Nordics. Just noticed Nissan is putting a MANUAL pre-heating button on its new EV, which is so cool compared to just completely forgetting people in cold climates or forcing people to use (those who know about it) pre-heating via plotting a course. Another issue is that not all cars have all third-party chargers on their on-board computer...
@@Markcain268 Don't know of any that don't, even the 2013 Nissan Leaf had one. But from reviews, the general consensus seems to be that only Tesla has one that actually works well, mostly due to having control of their own charger infrastructure. The rest have many issues with chargers being in use/broken/having no info on charging speed/routing stupid by having you charge at an AC charger for 8 hr in the middle of a road trip, when a DC charger with 30 minutes is 5 miles away. Essentially, at least for a while, the computers were there, but their usefulness was lacking, with people resorting to third party smartphone apps and web services for better routing. Don't know, if the newer EV platforms from legacy manufacturers have actually solved that. Then again, my country doesn't have any Superchargers...
Jonny: “Elon is a genius, I just wish he’d lay off the social media”. Yesterday’s news headlines: Elon Musk buys 9.2% stake in Twitter. Today: Elon Musk joins board of Twitter. Dream on Jonny!
Before we went with the model Y long range a year ago we tried many different EV competitors . In the end we went with what was practical. Some others I liked the looks of but were quirky . And the supercharger network was a big plus. Most of the time we charge at home. Here in my state the petrol is at $5.00 per gallon. So my Range Rover is at $80.00 to top off. The Tesla at home is $4.27 to top off. The price at the supercharger is $7 to$9 per full charge. It's a no brainer. Wife loves the Tesla and I have become to love it from an engineering point of view. At one point we had our eye on the Model S. A friend had purchased the S and so the wife and I went out for a drive. It is insane. I have owned over the years many fast European cars. The Y fits in well between too fast and fast enough. Very nice video. thanks for the ride.
Since 26 June the Chinese models are reported to have softer suspension, as with the Berlin one's. There are a number of other upgrades - including the sound system.
Another excellent review Jonny, thank you! With the hike in fuel prices, I’ve now taken to doing any motorway driving at 60mph rather than 70 and the savings are significant (2018 1.2l Pug 308). I keep looking at the Golf GTE (circa 2016) as a replacement though. Financially, decent range full EVs aren’t in my league as I prefer to own my cars outright.
Really nice review. I don't think it's ugly, nor is it beautiful. It's a design that is still good in ten years, I think. And that is the point. Would love to have on for my family with three kids.

Why on earth would you use a brush on a paint job? Have you lost your mind?😮
I would have the Y without question. I'm not a Tesla guy but as an EV, you really can't beat their infrastructure and tech.
Tempting between model 3 and Y especially after the new refresh of the 3, would you please let me know your experience since you tried both models?

Model Y because of the Superchargers, the Software, the batterytec, the efficiency, the space 🤩👍.

I’d probably go with a Y. There’s a lot to like about the others, but I think the Y is ultimately the best total package.
Yeah, it’s like a 3 but slower, worse handling and that horrible high seat position.

I definitely want a Model Y, personally I don't think it looks ugly at all! I'd definitely go for air suspension if they offered it though.
Yeah I don't get why people fin them ugly! Isn't the Kia EV6 the ugly one?
So if a canadian government doesn't approve of you for some reason they can dissable your car "over-the-air" and prevent you from using it? Good.
In my experience the App may say 8weeks but there are major delays and your expected date will be pushed on
@@matthewjohnson4380 yes true. I ordered 10th March and is coming on 30th June so in the end 16 weeks. Lockdown in Shanghai the main reason for the delay. I think if you order now it’s more like 6 months.
Ioniq 5 for me please. Great video... Totally agree with you on the Y looks definitely not for me 😳
DUDE MY HEART STOPPED when you started using the car wash brush. Here in Australia you'd never use one haha full of dirt and scratches the car.
It did scratch the car, you can see the swirls when he looks at the dent :/
Tesla is like Apple. Its very good at creating an ecosystem.
If I could afford a 50k'ish EV I'd get a Tesla for the user experience, build quality might not be as good or the driving experience of traditional car makers.
Elon has put money into the bits that matter when using an EV - range anxiety and convenience.
Also.....
GREAT VIDEO 😁😁😁😁😁
Build quiality for Made in China models is amazing, and driving experience is pretty good too, I would say suberb if it wasn't so heavy
Ugly? I think it's understatedbly gorgeous.
@@Art-Sin the thing with taste in terms of beauty is that we all have our own opinion.
Personally I think the Y is ugly. The proportions are all over the place to my eyes. It is probably due to having low drag of course.
That being said, I drive a 2009 Prius which is very ugly too.
Jeeze they must be bad then if they're worse than Tesla with it's ugly looks, awful interior, thin paint and poor build quality.
Jonny your channel is very rapidly becoming by favourite car based channel, you and Harry Metcalfe are streets ahead, thanks for the review, cheers.
The Supercharger network is currently opening up for all EVs
Detailed feedback - many thanks
Agree about the Indicator stalk, glad its not just me.
2 years and you need a new one? If I spent that much on a car I'd want it to last a lifetime lol
@@Markcain268, it will be a 2 year lease most likely.
@@presterjohn71 oh right, he doesn't actually own the car then? So can't really do any modifications to it
EV6 or Ioniq5 for me, but I don't do loads of long journeys so most charging won't be at public chargers, supercharger or otherwise.

I love the authenticity of this show!
Excellent review, Jonny. You are doing a great job. I would buy the Model Y over its competitors. I agree with you that Teslas look pretty awful - a generic jelly mould car shape - but interestingly, my kids love the shape. Go figure.
For the same money you can buy the benz suv as well.
Much rather have that
@@baronvonlimbourgh1716 but it's not the same money because with every drive you save as you go... £30-40 per tank and £500/yr maintainance. You would need to buy a cheaper petrol car to match the more expensive EV... so maybe a RAV4 or a Tiguan.

Tesla has definitely sped things up over the years when it comes to ev technology. Its a race now for the other manufacturers to try to catch up and its lovely to see it unfold on a monthly basis it feels sometimes
They wont ever catch up. Buy Tesla stock.
@@maxflight777 hilarious
Got mine in Sep22 and I love it, although there is room for improvements - but that’s moaning on a high level.
Apart from the supercharging structure, good range, software and performance Tesla 3 and Y have some major negatives:
Fact that they know what they are doing with batteries, motors, range, efficiency…
I will become a Tesla person and I’m nit afrraid of it (only affraid for the speedtickets my wife will generate 🫣)
Great review.
Entirely agree. Love Tesla's tech, philosophy, and charging network, looks and firm ride not so much.
A very happy EV6 owner.
I just think TLBS is the best car show out right now. Nothing can touch this quality of analysis and fun.
Many thanks!
I mean seriously, it shouldn't even be in the same conversation, really.
if you can afford a 50k car why do you care about mpg
Get what you want. Hopefully it works out for you.

Ouch. You are watching the wrong reviewers if you are expecting "insane [ly good?] charging speeds" in a coldish climate area.
Well done!
My favourites:
1. Kia EV6 (800V and V2L)
2. Mustang Mach-e (best looks)
3. Tesla Model Y (supercharger network, big frunk, but most expensive)
For me I'd go for an Ionic 5, I know the Tesla gets more miles per KW than everything else but due to the looks , the lack of interior buttons and the hard ride
Completely agree with you, Tesla just leaves me completely cold. The great tech doesn't compensate for the bland looks and awful interior.
Is the ride really as hard as everyone claims?
@@CrankCyclingChannel I'm in my 3rd EV now, all have had a "firm" ride, particularly uncomfortable at times for the passenger.
The bigger the battery, the heavier the car, the harder the suspension to support that weight.
The Y has a bigger battery and being taller than the 3 has more weight and body roll to supress, so harder suspension necessary which compromises the ride quality.
If/when adjustable air suspension is an option the Y would be far better.
27:43 I've been in that exact situation and finally went with the Model Y. My second choice was the EV6
You made the right choice… Report back on your thoughts.
Once again, great episode!
Could you also cover efficiency of EVs and not just range?
32 kwh/100miles - that was Johnny's average. That's roughly 3 miles / kwh
Johnny is such an authentic reviewer that I get a lot from him. Tired of the pretensiousness of many other reviewers.
I cancelled the Kia ev6 and stayed with Tesla in the end. I have a model 3 performance and a model y. Can’t fault either of them. Not done long journeys in the y yet but in the 3 I’ve been all over the country. It’s so easy.
17:47 - thanks Johnny, I'm never unseeing that... 😂 A bit of an LBS/RCR crossover moment there 😬
As a long time EV owner (non Tesla), I have to say Tesla for the supercharger network and the integrated tech.
@@theenglishtrucker1849 and that is why you drive a truck :)
06:15 How can you get only 75kw at a suc? Shared stall? Rookie misstake.
I am so glad that I opted for the white on my Y as it really brightens the cabin and makes it stand out
Funny thing is, I find the looks of most Teslas ever so slightly repulsive.

What were you thinking growing that tall?
Hahaha
I live in Iceland and strangely the Model Y was no more expensive than the Ioniq 5 or Kia EV6. I’ve had a Model Y since December, generally pretty great but the hard suspension is the achilles heel. This is a car that should have had adaptive dampers, it’s FAR too stiff and harsh for everyday driving. The wipers are also rubbish, some “neural net” nonsense instead of a rain sensor that would have cost a few quid and it can’t detect road spray from vehicles ahead
Wipers should be fixable if they can get the camera’s software to do a better job to detecting water on the glass
@@joetz1 The cameras are in the wrong place - too far from the bit the driver looks through. They have got better through software updates, but they're still much worse than the ones on my 6 year old Skoda.
@@johnmckay1423 ok, well, at least the suspension issue is fixable by going to the aftermarket
Do they make any EVs that don't have a computer? They never seem to work properly for me so I'd sooner drive a car that doesn't need a computer
@@Markcain268 That would be kind though a difficult combo, unless it's made of like power drills.
@@esaedvik my ebike doesn't have a computer, maybe has basic logic circuits in the controller but otherwise it's delightfully computer free😀
@@esaedvik haha.. you know he meant the user-facing, infotainment one, not the ECUs.

Dream on Jonny!
Detailing nerds are having heart attacks watching the washing technique 😮
Gotta get that lower sill dirt on the roof somehow.
Yep, washing the wheels and then the paint...
I think it’s the best looking Tesla going .. I must be weird 😀😀
I’d go with the ioniq5. Just love the way it looks plus you get some physical buttons
Really nice review. I don't think it's ugly, nor is it beautiful. It's a design that is still good in ten years, I think. And that is the point. Would love to have on for my family with three kids.
