  • First part of this SA 200 project and it starts with tearing it all apart, my favorite step. My bud Ethan will have the ultimate say on how far we go into fixing this ole guy back up, but the frame definitely needed some attention. Look for more to come. Thanks for watching!!

    As Ted said, take the thermostat housing off and knock the two freeze plugs out of the block ( 1-5/8"), and remove the drain petcock to. There's going to be a lot of rust and sediment trapped between the cylinders. I just used a pressure washer for 30 mins on a '82 SA 200 and it was full of junk until I got clean water coming out. You'll rest assured that it has good flow for cooling. Also, replace the thermostat while you are at it with a 180*. You are doing a great great job of going through the machine!

    Wix filters makes a remount coolent filter kit and the filter has a anti cavitation additive that stops rust.I put one on all my trucks and cars have not had to replace a radiator in over 30 years.Far cheaper then a new radiator.

    I am very sorry to tell you that this time you went backwards. Let me explain. Those machines are all mounted on a sled. That sled could stand a good clean up but the repairs would be very much so cheaper than destroying what you have. If your going to make another sled so be it but it still in my mind been easier to save the stuff you had and modify it. They all look like that, as thousands of them were used on the Alaska pipe line. Sadly as they moved camps, hundreds of them were pushed into holes and buried. They made the 200 and the 400 amp welders and some came with a generator that was separated some how as they did already produce one ten, but the ones I talk about produced 220 volt. They were still welders but had a high filter of the voltage so tube radios would play, and the cook stove in camp would work.I have used one of the four hundred amp machines with a air ark set up and you could cut two inch thick steel like butter and the cut was comparable to any other means of cutting steel that thick. We even paired off two welders with one lead. I watched in horror as they would not sell but push them into pits and crush them and some never unboxed. They finally sent them to auction places in Anchorage and in the states as this was just after state hood for Alaska and most of us who voted against still had a hard time coming to grips of what we lost. Most were first sold as un known and later they gained value as people got there hands on them. I liked them the first time I ran a bead in the rain coming down on us in sheets and they just worked well. I would clean up what you have and try to put it back the way it was and then mount it on a little dolly or trailer (home made one) as they travel well. My biggest complaint was the pipe on the machine for exhaust would break and that is cast iron. I did half ass weld with brass the pipe back good enough. The deal with the lever is the governor housing and you do not want to mess with that and the fly weights in side of it. It is a great machine but the parts are un attain "iam" as no one knew that they would become so valuable. That part that you sawed off is going to be the biggest fear. You can clean up the wiring and paint makes pretty but it won't pull the plow

      That's just unbelievable that all those machines were buried like that, especially the ones that were never unboxed.

    • @tommyt2854
      @tommyt2854 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, sadly it's believable. This may be blasphemy, but these are "just welders" (don't get me wrong, I LOVE ShieldArcs). I've seen heavy equipment left behind as it's cheaper for the company, and looks better on the books according to the game of business and gov't. There is so much waste in the Bush that it's mind boggling!!
      When I was a kid, I helped clean up a train wreck in Wyoming. We were hired to take all the cargo to a hole where it was buried. The cars we were cleaning up carried all new rifles. It was ordered from the UPRR and insurance to be buried.

      And Mr. Adair, don't kringe too much on the parts being cut off, there are a handful of companies that stock NOS and "hotrod" parts for these old Lincolns. B & W is where I bought parts to restore an '80, and a shorthood '54.
      I think the welders you were speaking of are the big SAM series. I think they went all the way up to 600 amps.

      OG pipeliner! Makes me so sad the wastefulness companies will go through to save a buck. Glad folks like J fix these gems up

    Unless the thermostat is removed, you probably just flushed the pump. I'd pull the thermostat and sling it on a hoist, then flush it again while you slosh it back and forth for a few minutes to get as much sludge out of the bottom as you can. Looks solid, though- good machine. 👍

    I see a sa 200 on marketplace that the guy says it is seized up? Is that a hard fix? He only wants 500 dollars for it

    • @j_moffitt
      @j_moffitt  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Depends on how bad it is, if cylinders are too bad it will have to be bored out, and you’ll have to check the spec on it to see if it’s worth it, not a bad price tho if everything else is there
