Thanks so much for this. I've got a bike with these on, never seen em before so was totally baffled. Have to change the wheel so I'm hoping I can attach it to another wheel. I'm a bit concerned though as it seems to have a special shimano hub through the wheel itself.
Thank you Sir for your worthy informations, I just wanna ask about lubricating the roller brake, we don't have that Shimano product in our country so should I use engine oil instead?
@@BikeTeacher I've just bought a new Shimano roller brake for the front hub, and while braking it started making some noise a little bit, Idk where that comes from does that mean it's not lubricated enough?
Do not use engine oil. Only use braking grease. The braking grease contains small particles to increase resistance when braking. Using oil or lubrication instead of braking grease will reduce braking performance. New brakes do come with some grease already applied, so you can use it while you wait for your braking grease. Order braking grease online and apply a very small amount, a pea size, when it arrives.
@@pettahify Thank you so much for your information, do you mean any grease or Shimano roller brake grease? Because they say they can't deliver it to the country I live!
I've bought an old, second-hand cargo bike with just a back pedal brake on the rear. It's pretty heavy and I want the security of a set of brakes on the front as well as the option to use this as a parking brake. It's the kind of bike with 2 independent wheels at the front axle. As the wheels are just on a bracket similar to a wheel barrow, there's no place to mount a caliper or rim brake without welding. Was wondering if this system would work if it was to be fitted to some Shimano hubs (also with a dynamo) or would an additional bracket need to be welded somewhere?
Sorry for late reply. What did you figure out? I would imagine that would work, the roller brake. I think the brake will need a fixed point to allow the brake to function. Like on this on the side of the fork.
@@BikeTeacher turned out it was designed for a Sturmey Archer x-FD but someone butchered the entire bike with homemade jobs. Put on 2 new wheels with x-FDD to solve the dynamo problem. Working great now
Hello, I have a problem in the ,roller brake which is weak and not strong when braking. You need a longer time to brake. What is the solution? Thank you
Go to a bike shop and ask if they have a newer one in stock. I did exactly this, and they made sure I got the right size of everything. You may of course order online, but then you have the risk of ordering the wrong size. I did just that, and it worked fine. By size I mean the nuts and bolts and stuff.
So... 2 questions... 1: Can these roller brakes be added to an old bike with no mountings for disk brakes ? If so it could be a great way to replace my old rim brakes and get rid of the existing rim brakes. The second question, is if I have an aluminium frame and aluminium front forks, I read that disk brakes are not a good idea in terms of stressing the frame or forks when braking. Should roller brakes also not be added to bikes with aluminium frame or forks ? Hope someone can help/advise please, thanks.
Hi, I think it may work. That really the only experience I have had with this brakes. The brake will need a place to harness itself as you see on the side of the fork. As far as aluminum frames and disk brakes, I never a herd of a problem nor have a seen any problems related to your concern. There are plenty of new bike out on the market today that have aluminum frames and disk brakes. Thanks
I just bought a second hand bike with roller brakes. It needed a replacement of the front brakes. The old brakes were a REALLY old model. The brakes only made the bike slow down. Anyway, i just went to a bike shop, asked for the model with the biggest heatsinks. They checked which size the axle bolts or whatever I had on the bike. I went home and changed brakes, that was easy! If I would have bought it online there would have been a big risk of me buying the wrong brake because of the axle thingy.....
Most ridiculous system Shinamo ever came up with, used the old system for years, it allowed you to pull the inside cable before locking it. I did it in exactly the way the video showed on the new Shinamo system and it defenately doesnt brake now, the only way of decently lock the cable at the right tension is to try and turn the nut when pulling the inside cable again, something that is terribly difficult since the nut is inside the system making it hard to reach. My advice, buy an old brake system :p
I just bought a new bike with these exact brakes and had to set 'em up myself. Really helpful video
Thanks, glad it helped.
Interesting brake concept, great video as usual!
Thanks!
i think this guy is learning as he goes in this video

Excellent..thanks a lot..i could repair my brakes with this vedio.
Awesome. Glad to help.
can I install a roller brake without provisions or slots for the brake in my bike frame? Or is there an adapter slot to put on my rear wheel part.

I suppose in an emergency it would work.

una consulta, ese tipo de freno le da a cualquier aro de bicicleta? o tiene que ser un aro especial? o depende del buje del aro?
A question:
Is it possible to install a roller brake on a bike without that metal pieces on the bike? With adapters, perhaps?
A clip? Yes

Possibly more tension on the cable or the friction surface of the pads or metal are contaminated. Scuff with sandpaper and clean with alcohol.

Sorry. I'm autistic. You're driving me to distraction saying bolts when you mean nuts! I want to scream!

Okay, somewhere along the way the definition got blurred for me which may have turned into laziness. Thanks for the point out.
