I’m a guitarist of many years and stumbled across your video while looking at the Nile Rodger’s parts to this song, what a fantastic lesson this is, explained in exactly the way everyone can understand. Brilliant work 👍
There are all kinds of different tutorials on how to play that riff. Most stay in the first position, which doesn't sound quite right and isn't according to the few videos of the original. This way to play sounds spot on and I'll have to learn to play the riff different from what I've been doing so far. Thanks for showing this.
I’ve been teaching piano and bass for almost 20 years now, and I can tell you are a super experienced teacher by the way you explain things. It’s a real challenge to show students a riff, explaining both the components and the bigger picture at the same time. You’ve got it down, bro.
Excellent video. There's many YT vids out there laying out the bare tabs and notes, but this riff is 100% about the stacatto feel and those ghost notes. Nailed it, Mark!
Great lesson as always! quick tip to nail the 16th notes: listen to the original song and focus on the piano, it will cue you in to play either the open E or the open A. Once you've listened a few times, those piano notes will be there in your head... Or you can always badadadadada pa TA
Love this! A great way to learn rhythm, theory and technique with a helpful example. Plus you walk away from it with a funky bassline in your repertoire! Love it 😁👍🏻
You are a great teacher. I had a bass guitar when I was 17, I was pretty crap (drums I was much better at) and sold it soon after. I bought another one 20 years ago and still was crap but did manage to learn a few bass riffs. That didn't last long. Now I have 2 basses which I bought online after over indulging in wine! Cheap price but good for what you pay for; Ibanez SR300EB and SR305EB both in 'weathered black'. I'm 50 now, never too late to learn again. But the 5 string is feels like a totally different instrument and I can't get used to it. More practice I guess.
Another great lesson especially as I am a massive fan of funk from The Meters, Graham Central Station through to Rick James, Flea and beyond. 😇 But as you asked for suggestions for future riffs, although one of my all time favourite bass players is Glenn Cornick of Jethro Tull, a player who is often overlooked or simply forgotten to the mist and fog of time. Bwcause of this scant little attention is given to his amazing bass playing on the tune Bouree, if possible could you give it some love and attention? Or just more funk because funk is still fantastic 😎💞😎
Thanks for the guide through this epic bass line!! I‘d really live to learn „around the world“ from the chili peppers. Any chance? That would be awesome 👌🏼
I tried looking up those basses like the one you have in this video and can't find them anywhere, guess sims doesn't make them anymore. Shame, that purple/red shift I'd buy up quick
There Is A Famous Track By Chic called Everybody Dance, where Bernard uses a chucking tecnuiqe in the bass line, can you upload a video lesson of the chucking tecnuiqe please☺️ Thanks for this video aswell
Thanks Mark for the realy good lessons! I love your chanel very much. Only one request: please make subtitles. English is not my native language (and i think a lot of your subscribers too) and sometimes it's difficult to understand aurally. Thanks again! Привет из России)
The very first F# (of the A A F# D? G F# A fill) might just be a pull off to open D instead of an A note. Identical hand position but subtly smoother and easier to play
IT's not actually purple. It looks it but it's actually bronze/blue. It's a special effect where it looks bronze from one angle and blue from another and you get all these cool combinations between. Really nice. Martin (Sims the builder) said it's actually black but and it's an optical illusion.
Yeah, love that. Bernard Edwards was just the best. Tony Thompson inspired me to play drums which is my first love, I just haven't got the space for a kit in my home.
I struggle with the vocalisation of the sub-divisions. Maybe due to having been a drummer for over 40 years…It comes naturally to me…vocalising it and over thinking it hurts my head, lol
Good Times is one of Bernard's easier bass lines. There's plenty of more technical bass lines by bernard. Everybody dance My forbidden lover And many more Etc etc. Why do people always do good times. I don't get it🤔
Good Times is probably the most well-known song and bassline; however, all the aforementioned songs, bass lines and more are just as well-known to true fans. The first Bernard Edwards riff that I learned was in "I Want Your Love". I also enjoy the bass fills he does later in the song. Many others are on my list including: * Sometimes You Win (Bernard plays bass and sings solo parts too) * One More Time - a Sister Sledge song that he played the bass line on.
This is a terrific breakdown of the first four bars of "Good Times", but it basically ignores all the rest of the song. It's a bit like showing the first four bars of, say, "Psycho Killer" and ignoring the rest of the song. Next time, teach the rest of the tune. It's pretty easy and you were already doing a great job with the main riff, so why not spend about 7 more minutes and teach the bass line that's used for most of the tune?
Yo... what's up with speed teaching. I can't even learn from your videos as I can't stop watching you move like your on cocaain with all the twiching and all that so your not teaching me anything except that don't do drugs.
I really appreciate how you teach these songs in the same finger positions as the original artist! Much respect!!

Another crystal clear lesson, thanks Mark!

I love Bernard Edwards. Please do more. I’m a member of your website and I’ve learned sooo much from you. Thanks 🙏🏾 Mark
One of the most iconic basslines ever even metal head bassist know it
Thank you so much for your patience and taking your time making sure we get it. I really enjoyed this particular lesson.
That's a great thorough breakdown and explanation of the riff. The note C# included in the riff makes sense when this is a E Dorian tonality.
Fantastic lesson. Syncopation is the key to this riff. You explained and demonstrated it perfectly.
This one won me over to your channel. Subscribed!
Well done on showing it the correct way. Much more punch than relying on the open A and D for the ascending part.
Amazing lesson as always Mark
Thank you 🙏🏽 Amazingly explained! Not many good musicians can do that! 🤗
Excellent insights to play clean and clear!
Great lesson as always!

Wow I have just found this 😳 Good delivery, like your teaching style. Might spend a bit here 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Soo excited to learn this!! 😁
Such a great song! Thanks for breaking it down for us!
Thanks for all you do Mark! Could you do a breakdown of Peter Gabriel's (Tony Levin's) Sledgehammer? Brilliant bass line there, isn't it?
Nice to see it played the way BE played it - ascending the E string up to the B.
Best lesson I've seen, thanks. Great rhythm explanation and nice touch of using the "original" hand positioning
Thank you Mark. Very informative and detailed. Have an awesome day
Love this! A great way to learn rhythm, theory and technique with a helpful example. Plus you walk away from it with a funky bassline in your repertoire! Love it 😁👍🏻
Awesome that you also explained the theory behind and not just how to play it! Thanks!
fantatsic, this video will let me catch this riff for the first time
Great job Mark! Many many thanks for this.
Thanks for another awesome lesson mark
Very fine and useful explication!

Keep it coming love by KC and The Sunshine Band bass lesson

I think you explain very well. Excellent teachers are not so common.
Great vid🥰✨ thanks!
Thanks for the guide through this epic bass line!!

Thank you for all your helpful tutorials, life savers in these crazy time's. It's time ! Come on come over , by Jaco.
very good lesson!
Great lesson, thank you.
Thank you . Your teaching method really suits me . Could I request
‘ I Surrender ‘ by Rainbow please .
I am really struggling with that one .
Brilliant mark thankyou
great! where is the pdf?
I tried looking up those basses like the one you have in this video and can't find them anywhere, guess sims doesn't make them anymore. Shame, that purple/red shift I'd buy up quick
I am also a huge Mark King fan, so anything by him, YES thanks! :)
wow ...your bass and tone......Cool
Sick groove
Question. How do you play the changes?
Quick question anything I can buy to hear drums so I can play with it on bass. Anything other than the beat buddy?
Can you break down feed the fire by sg lewis ir some jamiroquai songs
There Is A Famous Track By Chic called Everybody Dance, where Bernard uses a chucking tecnuiqe in the bass line, can you upload a video lesson of the chucking tecnuiqe please☺️ Thanks for this video aswell
Bab Id Da Ba!!!! Loving it
Back in the ussr is a pain to play. It's simple but I can't seem to get it to flow. Wouldn't mind seeing how you approach that
Thanks Mark for the realy good lessons! I love your chanel very much. Only one request: please make subtitles. English is not my native language (and i think a lot of your subscribers too) and sometimes it's difficult to understand aurally. Thanks again! Привет из России)

That note isn't a D, it's another open A. It'll be clear to hear if u slow it down a bit
Nice one. Love Bernarc Edwards. Narada michael walden “I shoulda loved ya” or Evelyn King “I’m in love” would be good in the future.
Sorry BernarD.
Thank you
Loving the funk from Chic and the new purple bass.
IT's not actually purple. It looks it but it's actually bronze/blue. It's a special effect where it looks bronze from one angle and blue from another and you get all these cool combinations between. Really nice. Martin (Sims the builder) said it's actually black but and it's an optical illusion.
What kind of bass do you use here.
Can you do a video showing us how to play My forbidden 🚫 lover by Chic PLEASE 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾!
Yeah, love that. Bernard Edwards was just the best. Tony Thompson inspired me to play drums which is my first love, I just haven't got the space for a kit in my home.
Soup for one - Chic.? any chance of a lesson on that one :)
I also want to see a tutorial on Soup for One.
The little details and articulations are what will make one a good bass player! not just the notes ( coz any one can play em)
I absolutely agree
Have you done any Marcus Miller? Like Blast?
nice video
I would love for you to breakdown some Nikki Sixx like rock n roll junkie
That is a beautiful guitar
I struggle with the vocalisation of the sub-divisions. Maybe due to having been a drummer for over 40 years…It comes naturally to me…vocalising it and over thinking it hurts my head, lol
Thinking of you . Another Bernard line . Heathrow . Level 42 . Pleasure . Glide. Would be nice.
That guitar is beautiful
next do Rapper's Delight :B
Really???
Keren👍 GASSS 🔥
COOL
You know you're a brilliant teacher, right?
What kind of a bass is that?
Ross Sekiya It’s an Enfield bass. Built in the UK 🇬🇧
Am I the only one that spent the first five minutes staring at those pickups?
I'll keep insisting Mark, please break down BARBARY COAST by WEATHER REPORT.
OK!
4:35
This one was taken from good times and another before that.
Subtítulos will be weolcome
Great lesson, I’d just like to point out that on bar 3, the chord is A7sus4, bar 4 is A6 (rather than A7) cheers!
Hi Mark what about doing (le freak )
one person voted this down? either he doesn't play bass or he couldn't learn it.
One person was having a bad time...
Good Times is one of Bernard's easier bass lines.

Everybody dance
My forbidden lover
And many more
Etc etc.

Man you slow let's get to it
