I was around 10 when this came out. Made such a huge impact on me. When I started having my own bands, I always looked for a funky bass player, no matter what style I was playing at the time.
I must admit, I was not very open-minded when it came to Chic, even very recently, but an introduction to Bootsy Collins has given me a greater appreciation for the genre. Also, the more I learn about Nile Rogers, the more my admiration grows.
Well, Nile Rodgers, along with Stevie Wonder basically were a large part of the soundtrack of my youth. I remember when Good Times came out, it was played at roller rinks and block parties and of course part of every kid's mix tape. Another great analysis, Warren!
they told us "Disco Sucks" in the late 1970's and they were quite wrong. Some of the most amazing music played by real musicians came out of that style.
This song is iconic not only was it sampled endlessly it also inspired other artist like John Deacon's bassline in Another One Bites The Dust. Chic is only recently being appreciated for what they brought to the music culture.
1975 to 1985 was an incredible decade of pop music when everything came together. Everybody (not only Chic) was being innovative, artists, writers, producers and record companies. In the charts you had punk, disco, rock, ska, pop, country, reggae, funk, jazz funk, soul, folk, new wave, new romantic, futurist, rapping, songs from the shows, kids songs and even comedy songs! It was like a giant buffet of music, something for everyone and they all sat there on the same table. Sadly the big record companies one by one ate up all these fantastic independent producers that created this diversity and along with the total support of the radio stations they gradually sold out to hip-hop, rap and the boy/girl band era. We went from musicians of the ilk of Level 42, Chic, Southern Freez, The Crusaders, Herbie Hancock, Bowie, Tears For Fears, The Police, Peter Gabriel etc etc etc to the likes of Stock Aitken Waterman and the cast of Neighbours! At least ABBA have shown that there IS a market out there for well crafted pop songs with melodies and positive messages and there has been a few rumblings in the music journals that pop music as we knew it may come back as people have had enough of the same old thing. Let's hope so. P.S. Apologies for the rant but when you hear records like Good Times you desperately wish for those 'good times' again!
@ghost mall Yes, Daft Punk are very good and you're right with Nile Rogers onboard it can't go wrong. I think there has been quite a few solo female artists that have also produced some great songs, Sia 's first three albums are superb.
I LOVE Chic! I'm looking at my vinyl copy of 'Les Plus Grands Succes de Chic" (Chic's Greatest Hits) from 1979 as we speak, bought it back in the day. Every track a killer. Just fantastic, timeless productions. Bernard Edwards' bass playing alone is an eternal thing of wonder, never mind the wondrousy funky guitar and bass. I also love Kool & the Gang, KC & the Sunshine Band and Earth, Wind & Fire, all glorious stuff from that era. Great video, thanks Warren!

When I saw that Fonzi Thornton contributed to Chic, I instantly thought of Avalon by Roxy Music, in which he contributed the stellar background vocal for that song. You might already have featured Roxy Music on your channel, but if not they would be a great one to do, maybe More Than This or Avalon from one of my all time favorite albums - Avalon. Thanks again for featuring such an important song/band in the history of modern music.

A friend, a great bass player, took me on a wild venture of musical introductions, through Hendrix, Cream, Weather Report, Brothers Johnson, and many many more. So, when he brought Chic to me, early on, I gave it my sincere ear. He had pedigree. I was a guitarist, who learnt to play the bass lines first, because of my friend. So it's Bernard: Funky, athletic, controlled, sophistication. Well, then I learnt the guitar parts, Nile: Wow, loose, jazzy, shuffley, complex, when you add in all those sweet little extensions. In a short space of time, the sound got everywhere, Sister Sledge, Diana Ross, Sheilah and B Devotion. You're so right, a fabulous team, in the vein of Sly and Robbie (R.I.P.) Class Acts - Amen (think I'll listen to Le Freak, now - thank you)

So when all my rocker friends would say “Disco Sucks!” I’d agree and say “Yeah, Disco Sucks!” Then Chic would come on the radio and I’d crank it up and start dancing. Nile Rodgers is a king, unbelievably great and influential player, producer, and songwriter.
This song definitely changed music back in 1979, I can still remember the 1st time I heard it back in '79. Very influential to this day. Sophisticated Simplicity and Groove! The sound of the bass is very what did it and of course Nile's Rhythm Guitar! Yep the Hollywood swinging secret 💯🎸
My understanding that the Sugarhill Gang didn't sample it. It was a band covering the song for them with only the strings extracted from the original song.
Bootsy said his signature star shaped bass was stolen once. Every where the thief took it they would say, that's Bootsys bass and eventually the guy just gave it back !!!!!!
Good stuff, as usual, Warren. It was "Le Freak" which was the break out Chic track for me. It was disco but with sophistication and a funky groove. Also the instrumental break, majoring on the bass but with light guitar and simple strings - magic. I didn't believe they could produce anything as good but then along came "Good Times". 😎😎😎
Chic is my all-time fav dance act. Nothing comes close to Chic. And besides the magic of Nile and Bernard was the genius of Tony Thompson, what a genius drummer he was ! He is on so many hit records, it's mind blowing! Without Chic, the hip hop scene wouldn't have been the same and even nowadays, some young artists do the Chic thing. As a guitarist, Nile is one my heaviest influences. RESPECT 🙌
Class... seeing Chic live nowadays is a real showcase of well crafted tunes across the body of work (Chic, Ross, Sledge, Madonna, inxs, Duran...). Nile also treats us to tons of jazzy passing chords and partial inversions beyond what the record had which give the tunes new life too. Almost feel like he was cautious of adding blatant jazzy chords on the recording... well he don't hold back now! Needless to say his touring band are all superb too.
I'm a rock guy, grew up listening to Def Leppard, Queensryche, Rush, Floyd, etc. I've played guitar since the early 90's A few years ago I got to dep in a Chic/Disco covers band here in England. Playing clean funky guitar for hours on end has done wonders for my rhythm playing. Locking in with the drummer and playing those great great parts of Niles' I always respected Niles before, but now I admire him
It’s influence was greater on Generation X, as all the bands that came after name checked and were heavily influenced by Disco, so Gen Xers, like myself who were very young heard the songs on the radio as preteens and incorporated into our music.

One of my early and almost vanished memories in life is watching my mother rehearsing choreography for her dance group while this song was played over and over. Those were good times, literally. As a Black child growing up in Brooklyn, NY, I LIVED the Hip Hop era; and Good Times and Chic were among our most revered and sacred treasures of that religion. The only thing that came close, and MAY have even surpassed Good Times, was MFSB's - Love is the Message, which was, IMO, an even better record. This style of playing, the MFSB sound, is my strongest influence in the music I produce now and will always produce. I was aware of rappers delight, before I was aware of good times by Chic. (I was an 80's kid) That put me on the path for the next 20 years as an audio train spotter. I spent so many hours researching where the "breaks" came from that were the foundation of 80's & 90's hip hop tracks. When I started to DJ in the 80's I use to spin the originals and not the hip hop so much, as a scratch DJ. I have seen Chic several times in the past 40 years and they are always great.
I had the Disco Sucks T-shirt. You should be dancin’, yeah! I loved watching disco albums explode on the White Sox field in ‘79. Won’t you take me to funky town. But I loved this song (and other disco songs) from the first time I heard it, and have never grown tired of it the three and a half million times I’ve heard it since. We’re on the Groove Line tonight. Great songs are great independent of the genre. Ooh, see that girl, watch that scene Digging the dancing queen. Pick up the pieces.
I think the first time I ever heard Chic was when I Want Your Love came on the radio. The bass, the vocals, the bells, it had such a cool sound. Chic were always so stylish and classy, the music exuded that upscale dance club vibe.
I am a huge Chic / Nile Rogers fan and was lucky enough to see their show at the Roundhouse in Camden a few years ago. I am also old enough to remember the singles in the UK charts! Thank you Warren for casting your spotlight on this 'impossible to over-estimate their importance' band. I quite agree with your assessment (as I usually do). Keep up the great work!
Some may like it, some may not. Some do miss it, some feel the bloat. Yet, no soul can deny the fact that disco has been maybe the most influential genre and the era of production style shaping and even partially being reborn in samples as the popular music of the last 40+ years succeeding it, and counting. :) So, don't try to hide your stomping feet, bobbing heads and shimmying behinds people. We all are, by our nature, moved by it. :))
I love this song, a true classic! I had seen in another video (about Roxy Music) that Edwards bass line was inspired by “Love is the drug”. I can definitely hear the influence. Regardless of any of that, it’s an infectious groove that will be played forever.

Have you done anything by Kraftwerk yet? Hugely influential, of course, but it would be hard to pick a single song of theirs that specifically changed music, since they were so often album-focused. Maybe the title track off either Autobahn or Trans Europe Express?
As a musician, you should do like Miles Davies. He only knew two kinds of music: "Good and Bad". And his covers were all over the place because his ears were everywhere good music was. And good music is everywhere to be found if you keep your eyes... well, ears open.
I remember going to London on a school trip the year this record came out and I bought this record in shop down there and I couldn't wait to get back up North and play it. I still have the record :)

They were good times in 1977 if you look at the world at the time. It was difficult only in the context of America but on the whole America was still and has always been the place to be. And MUSIC through the entire '70's was amazing! @ 16:00 = One of the greatest movies of all time playing behind one of the greatest bass lines of all time. That said, I think it would be educational to see this bass line on a midi/piano roll.
Shades of David Bowie’s “Let’s Dance” (released in 1983) in Nile Rogers’ guitar riff. I never noticed the similarity before now. We all have stuff we like to go back to and use differently or that further inspires us. Niles got a “two-fer” out of that riff. Lucky for us!

However, I didn't BUY a bass guitar until I was nearly age 50... but this remained as the first groove which I couldn't wait to learn. It is just SO FUNKY. Cheers for making these videos!
Great video obviously. The videos, like this one, where there is more of a breakdown of how the song is put together are best ones, I believe. They’re not tutorials, but a bit of a deeper analysis of its parts and structure. By doing this we get to have a deeper understanding and appreciation of the song, the artist, the production and music in general. Thank you so much for doing this.
Great stuff Warren. When Disco was good it really was good (and when it was bad it was really bad!).. loved this period when I was growing up. Donna Summer, Chic, Taste of Honey, Bee Gees, Sister Sledge, Sheila and B devotion (last 2 were Niles and Bernard's productions!).... I particularly loved all the extended chords and I'm sure it all influenced my later love in jazz. Forbidden Lover was a great track by them too..

Nile Rogers also Co-produced David Bowies Let's Dance album at the Power Station studio in NYC! Post-Disco December 1982. I hated that record initially preferring everything else by Bowie. In hindsight it was brilliant of course and so is this song by CHIC!! :D

Like really great artists he doesn’t have any kind of problems admitting that he was influenced, giving credits to Kool And The Gang. Being a bass player I still miss Nile Rodgers. I was very much into punk and disco in the early 80s and all those rock-fans were dissing punk and disco for being primitive… And then you sit there with your 100,- bass trying to figure out one of these „primitive“ disco bass lines by Nile Rodgers… Ouch! Whenever I play Good Times on the bass, people look at me and say something like „Oh that Queen song…“ The Clash were influenced by Chic and Good Times, too. Listen to Radio Clash!
These are always so great! I thought of another artist for you. Possibly one of the most influential of all time. Nat King Cole! Terrific musicianship on the early trio stuff. Legendary pop songs later in the 50s and 60s. The Capitol Records building is called "The House That Nat Built" for good reason.

Although Rapper's Delight DID used Good Times as the backing tune, The Sugarhill Gang DID NOT used the exact backing track of CHIC, it was totally re-recorded by session musicians.

Chic is my all-time fav dance act. Nothing comes close to Chic. And besides the magic of Nile and Bernard was the genius of Tony Thompson, what a genius drummer he was ! He is on so many hit records, it's mind blowing! Without Chic, the hip hop scene wouldn't have been the same and even nowadays, some young artists do the Chic thing. As a guitarist, Nile is one my heaviest influences. RESPECT 🙌

Class... seeing Chic live nowadays is a real showcase of well crafted tunes across the body of work (Chic, Ross, Sledge, Madonna, inxs, Duran...). Nile also treats us to tons of jazzy passing chords and partial inversions beyond what the record had which give the tunes new life too. Almost feel like he was cautious of adding blatant jazzy chords on the recording... well he don't hold back now! Needless to say his touring band are all superb too.
I'm a rock guy, grew up listening to Def Leppard, Queensryche, Rush, Floyd, etc. I've played guitar since the early 90's
A few years ago I got to dep in a Chic/Disco covers band here in England. Playing clean funky guitar for hours on end has done wonders for my rhythm playing. Locking in with the drummer and playing those great great parts of Niles'

A song that defined the baby boomer generation who were teenagers or in their 20s during that era, great song, brilliant album too!
It’s influence was greater on Generation X, as all the bands that came after name checked and were heavily influenced by Disco, so Gen Xers, like myself who were very young heard the songs on the radio as preteens and incorporated into our music.

As a Black child growing up in Brooklyn, NY, I LIVED the Hip Hop era; and Good Times and Chic were among our most revered and sacred treasures of that religion. The only thing that came close, and MAY have even surpassed Good Times, was MFSB's - Love is the Message, which was, IMO, an even better record. This style of playing, the MFSB sound, is my strongest influence in the music I produce now and will always produce. I look forward to this channel doing a video on MFB's Love is the message, cause hey deserve it. Bless Sings 🙏✨

I was aware of rappers delight, before I was aware of good times by Chic. (I was an 80's kid) That put me on the path for the next 20 years as an audio train spotter. I spent so many hours researching where the "breaks" came from that were the foundation of 80's & 90's hip hop tracks. When I started to DJ in the 80's I use to spin the originals and not the hip hop so much, as a scratch DJ.
I have seen Chic several times in the past 40 years and they are always great.

I think the first time I ever heard Chic was when I Want Your Love came on the radio. The bass, the vocals, the bells, it had such a cool sound. Chic were always so stylish and classy, the music exuded that upscale dance club vibe.

I am a huge Chic / Nile Rogers fan and was lucky enough to see their show at the Roundhouse in Camden a few years ago. I am also old enough to remember the singles in the UK charts! Yet, no soul can deny the fact that disco has been maybe the most influential genre and the era of production style shaping and even partially being reborn in samples as the popular music of the last 40+ years succeeding it, and counting. :)
So, don't try to hide your stomping feet, bobbing heads and shimmying behinds people. We all are, by our nature, moved by it. :))

I love this song, a true classic! I had seen in another video (about Roxy Music) that Edwards bass line was inspired by “Love is the drug”. I can definitely hear the influence. Regardless of any of that, it’s an infectious groove that will be played forever.

Have you done anything by Kraftwerk yet? Hugely influential, of course, but it would be hard to pick a single song of theirs that specifically changed music, since they were so often album-focused. Maybe the title track off either Autobahn or Trans Europe Express?

As a musician, you should do like Miles Davies. He only knew two kinds of music: "Good and Bad". And his covers were all over the place because his ears were everywhere good music was.
And good music is everywhere to be found if you keep your eyes... well, ears open.

This was the bassline that motivated me to start again with playing bass after 30 years.
They were good times in 1977 if you look at the world at the time. It was difficult only in the context of America but on the whole America was still and has always been the place to be. And MUSIC through the entire '70's was amazing!
@ 16:00 = One of the greatest movies of all time playing behind one of the greatest bass lines of all time. That said, I think it would be educational to see this bass line on a midi/piano roll.

Shades of David Bowie’s “Let’s Dance” (released in 1983) in Nile Rogers’ guitar riff. I never noticed the similarity before now. We all have stuff we like to go back to and use differently or that further inspires us. Niles got a “two-fer” out of that riff. Lucky for us!

Chic, mainly Bernard Edwards is why I play Bass today. This group was a heavy influence on my life, as well as Mark Adams (Slave), and Marcus Miller.

Great stuff Warren. When Disco was good it really was good (and when it was bad it was really bad!).. loved this period when I was growing up. Donna Summer, Chic, Taste of Honey, Bee Gees, Sister Sledge, Sheila and B devotion (last 2 were Niles and Bernard's productions!).... I particularly loved all the extended chords and I'm sure it all influenced my later love in jazz. Forbidden Lover was a great track by them too..

Nile Rogers also Co-produced David Bowies Let's Dance album at the Power Station studio in NYC! Post-Disco December 1982. I hated that record initially preferring everything else by Bowie. In hindsight it was brilliant of course and so is this song by CHIC!! :D

Nile Rodgers deserves a lot of respect. His biography is a great read. Like really great artists he doesn’t have any kind of problems admitting that he was influenced, giving credits to Kool And The Gang.
Being a bass player I still miss Nile Rodgers. I was very much into punk and disco in the early 80s and all those rock-fans were dissing punk and disco for being primitive… And then you sit there with your 100,- bass trying to figure out one of these „primitive“ disco bass lines by Nile Rodgers… Ouch!
Whenever I play Good Times on the bass, people look at me and say something like „Oh that Queen song…“
The Clash were influenced by Chic and Good Times, too. Listen to Radio Clash!
I think you're mixing up Nile Rogers and Bernard Edwards. Nile Rogers is a guitar player and still very much alive.

These are always so great! I thought of another artist for you. Possibly one of the most influential of all time. Nat King Cole! Terrific musicianship on the early trio stuff. Legendary pop songs later in the 50s and 60s. The Capitol Records building is called "The House That Nat Built" for good reason.

Although Rapper's Delight DID used Good Times as the backing tune, The Sugarhill Gang DID NOT used the exact backing track of CHIC, it was totally re-recorded by session musicians.
