slap.was always elusive to me but the other day I finally recorded a decent line simply by thumping one string very very simple I realized that slap is something you grow into not that you put on like a coat
I love the technique brain dumps that come along with the lesson. You tell us what we may do wrong and what to do about it before we do it - and I'll be dammed if I don't! 😂🤣
Thanks Dan! True this isn't the original ''right way", but that's the beauty of great bass lines...improvising on them, having fun with them, making them your own. This is a perfect example. Just to show how excited I was to learn this lesson, I recently bought DR hi beams knowing this was coming up, and also because I'm going to tackle the slapp lessons part of your funk course. Highly recommended for anyone who loves funk and wants to jump right into it. Matt
That was like drinking out of a fire hose - so much to assimilate! I've been playing for many years, and always had a desire to play slap bass, but have never had enough momentum to get it right - no one to properly show me in person, and have in more recent years never looked it up on TH-cam for a breakdown - this, by chance, has been inspiring! I have never had a bass lesson, and so my theory is considerably lacking (altho I did have very basic theory with my piano lessons when I was a kid), and probably a lot of technique too. I understand the basics, and rely mostly on my ear. When you start talking about the different scales, I get a bit lost, but long to understand them as I know it will revolutionise my playing. I realise that I often rely on the pentatonic scale in a lot of my playing, especially for fills etc... Thank you for this video, as it's inspired me to push a little deeper into the theory so that I understand why notes work together, as opposed to just playing what I think works. As for the slapping technique, I still have some questions, but this has been a superb restart to my journey - thank you!
I appreciate how you acknowledged straight away that Bernard Edwards didn't and would never play it this way. And having established that... so what?? It's a fun and creative take on a legendary bass line. And isn't music, especially funk, supposed to be fun??
It's a great bass line & to play, isn't it?! Btw, It sounds almost like it was made for slapping!! Your bass sounds great too. Keep making the videos man. Cheers.
@@ricardojmestre don’t forget tone comes from other factors too such as the bass, setup, pickups, not to mention your own technique and hands. But they’re great strings!
Great lesson! The way you break down the slap funk technique makes it so easy to understand and follow along. Your playing is also super impressive - I can only hope to get as good as you someday. Keep up the awesome work!

My pleasure. Glad it helped!

Exactly!
Great tutorial. I reckon a slap section like this - mid song - would work well with the original bass line.
That’s a good point… 🙏
Sounds so good,my slap is ok at best. Not from a lack of trying, kinda' my kryptonite.

Dan should be sponsored by Dimarzio. That tone 🤯🤯🤯
@@ricardojmestre good suggestion! Must have earned them at least a couple of sets worth🤣

Do you have any good bass workouts using the metronome that would be awesome
Yes, I do. Search ‘metronome’ on my site or TH-cam channel. Cheers.
What model Ibanez bass are you playing? It looks great.
Thanks! 1982 Ibanez Roadster with DiMarzio DP126 pickups
