This is the most beautiful scene in the movie Carter is literally fighting through his grief , barring his enemies like he barriered his wife and daughter. It's pure poetry.

The story it's adapting, the Barsoom series by Edgar Rice Burroughs, is effectively responsible for a metric crapload of the fiction we have today, least of all being Superman, Star Wars, James Cameron's Avatar, and too many others to count.
People bash on it for its use of cliche and 'generic' tropes. They tend to forget it INVENTED most of them.
This scene was in my opinion the most impactful moments of this film. Not wanting to loose his newly found love, regretting the loss of his first, remembering the deep pain that he still felt while in that moment, to even his trusted companion alien dog not abandoning him, the score building up the event to make it even better, all of it hit so hard.
Arguably on par with Avatar. The cgi and cinematography was brilliant.

Is not strange at all, happens all the time, is the same situation where a movie gets great reviews and it sucks. Movie critics are butt kissers with their own agenda.
That's how a lot of cult classic movies find their audiences.
Poorly marketed or 'didn't make it's budget back in theaters' films often find new life on the small screen where it didn't on the big one. Look at Rocky Horror Picture Show, that's a damned good example.
Movies like John carter are uncommon in my opinion, there is no other movie where I want to go back and watch it again, and again. It just feels fresh every time.
That spaceship design and animation is just beautiful! The people working on this movie really cared and it shows.
Retro futurism always looks beautiful unless its fallout nowadays as they keep nuking themselves back to rubble and tourist have the balls to call that show peak

John Carter of Mars is a fantastic movie, and honestly glad many more have the same or similar sentiment. I've read three of the seven novels so far, and its great. I'm still reading it, but yea, I saw this in the theaters back then when it came out as a kid, and still love it. The action, story, cinematography, the actress for Princess Deja Thoris of Helium, the concepts and ships, the impactful moments and such, were great and still hit me to this day, after a decade! For those wondering, you should read the books, definitely worth it, seriously. I'm glad this film is finding new life and certainly getting the attention and positivity it deserved. I understand that the film has problems, but tbf, every film will have them and this film is more than worth the watch, a necessity.

Unfortunately potential doesn’t make good movies on its own, and making a movie expecting to get a trilogy to tie up all the loose ends doesn’t help either.

Giacchino did so well with this track. That and the incredible buildup made this scene. And Woola staying to help fight. Brings me to tears every time

I read the entire John Carter series of novels as a young teenager in the 70's. I can barely express the engagement I experienced while reading them---it just wrung me out after reading each one. Edgar Rice Burroughs was simply a master story teller. And now----they finally made a movie of it---and they did a really good job of it. Everyone I know enjoys and admires this movie---yet it was panned by someone. There is so much crap writing out there being produced into movies---I just don't get it.
It's not that it was panned, it's that no one went to see it. In great part because change of executives at Disney led to the movie being completely under-marketed. Still, it might have overcome that, had it had some soul. But even those who loved it can't go that far in their praise. Some really great scenes in it, for sure.
I read the book of Burtoughs in 1980s in translation and it was really a masterpiece. This book was translated into many languages and into Russian as well. And I always dreamed of a motion picture to have been shot on it. Here it is, and it really good👍
@@michaelboyko5024 Considered without reference to the books, it is amazing and wonderful. But all one has to do is re-read the early chapters to realize that the character of John Carter, man of principles, loyalty, cheerful confidence and a courage that does not even think of retreat, did not make it into the movie. There are always 'reasons' why such changes are made. But nothing can excuse riding on the coattails of someone else's creation while leaving out its soul.
@@AndSendMe and I'd add with please, that actors choice and the scenes really fit with what I expected when reading the book. Such things happen with the original story and the movie, this is really amazing and touching.
@@michaelboyko5024 The only casting that really mattered was Dejah Thoris and JC. Casting Lynn Collins was a stroke of genius, it is a crime that her career was damaged by this movie instead of helped. Taylor Kitsch was a perfect choice for the bland cookie-cutter everyman hero they replaced the character of John Carter with. Still, if the script had been right, and Kitsch was capable of acting that part (I don't know) he would have been okay. I'd rather have the right character than the right exact physical type.

@@TheSighphiguy I agree partially with you that everyone saw it liked it but there are so many reasons why i still think it's underrated. For instance, look at other movies that are way way less quality than this movie yet they get way more air time on TV than this movie. Movies that are not even good story or on any level, yet we are forced to see them constantly, not that i honestly watch TV that much.
This scene makes me cry and cheer at the same time. It's equal parts emotional and epic. Can't believe people didn't like this movie.

Very underrated movie. I have no clue why it bombed besides lack of big names in the staring roles maybe, but it was a well written, well acted, and great CGI movie. Loved it personally!

No joke I saw this and was literally sad when I heard they weren't doing more of them.
Partly because of woke culture. I remember before the movie came out that a lot of people said they would never see it because John Carter was a confederate soldier.
Would've loved to see a sequel/continuation of this movie. IMO great acting, plot, and cinematography across the board.

My first book series given by a beloved uncle back when I was a kid. Launched my love of Sci-Fi, adventure, and books in general. Loved seeing dear faithful Woola going full Cujo on these Tharks.
One of the world’s best renditions of a fun novel. It’s so sad that it wasn’t marketed like Tarzan movies were almost 100 years ago. The effects were straight out of the books, but so much better than Edgar Rice Burroughs could have imagined. So many wonderful sequels lost!

Movies like John Carter and Dracula Untold may have been commercial failures, but they are the only movies that dared to give us overpowered heroes fighting against entire armies and WINNING! I still love this movie and Dracula Untold, I just wish we had more like them.

A lot of people think this film was trying to get on the bandwagon of successful films like Star wars and Avatar. What most of them don't realize is the books this film came from are now over 100 years old. The "Mars" series triggered and influenced a lot of modern day Sci Fi/Fantasy. Star Wars and Avatar and a host of other books/films, would be a lot different/absent. One of the reasons the film failed was the appalling advertising campaign.

Absolutely epic film. One of those few films i could watch again and again. Why it didn't receive the proper marketing is beyond me.

A dog's faithfulness to their 'Dad' is boundless. There have been many dog's who lived the rest of their life to the memory of their Dad. Woola showed he was with Carter beyond death.

June 28, 2021----From what I understand, Disney NEVER put an effort into advertising this movie when it was released in the movie theaters. I didn't even know this movie had been made until I found it in the $5 bin at Walmart! Imagine if Disney had decided to do more John Carter movies ala Star Wars or John Wick.
So ive never seen this film. Starts out looking like the Mummy and im thinking, ok, fantasy period film, then flash back to old timey western and then im thinking "Oh...so new post apocalyptic like Mad max? Then things really go cu-cu for coco puffs and a big ass Capital Class battleship comes flying in from outer space... now im really confused lol

This was a SF epic that was screaming to be made. Burrough's work foreshadowed and inspired so much in SF it's impossible to overstate. From Asimov through to Herbert and beyond, so much of his astonishing imagination was unlike anything ever written. The original story "Princess of Mars" is one of the greatest all time SF novels written, even if it's sequels' quality dropped. What's more, despite some of it's grotesque departures from the novels, the movie made an enormous attempt to faithfully recreate the Barsoom world and cultures and the CGI here fully brought that out.
This was one of the stand out moments in a movie that criminally despised by so many. It wasn't perfect by a long shot, but it did not suck. Woola, Tars, Dejah .. all were immortalized here yet sadly, this movie's "flop" likely destined any attempts to tell the John Carter tales in the future to be blown to bits as surely as Helium riddled the green hordes here ..
I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. Seen it like 6 or 7 times. Underrated imo.

I come back to this movie clip time and time again, I read the books when I was young and this movie did not disappoint.
Some of the best CGI i've seen in a long time. You look at recent films like the Matrix remake....cgi sucks compared to this.
I actually enjoyed this movie especially his sidekick dog or whatever it is. Even imaginary loyalty from an animal is heartwarming

I think it just struggled to find an audience at the time and it’s understandable why
It shares a lot of similarities with stuff like Star Wars (because George Lucas took inspiration from the book when coming up with Star Wars) so when it was compared to something that had nailed the formula it didn’t hold up in the eyes of the majority. That being said I love the film it’s a really interesting premise and although I doubt we’ll get any sequels the books are worth reading if you enjoy the story.
Loyalty yes for John Carter saving him but they beat him for years it was time for a little payback it and John gave a lot of it's former Masters the long goodbye

A movie unapreciated in its time. Had it been released now it would be a success. Shawshank redemption was mediocer at best when released but remains one of the most watched dvd's of all time. Doubtles John Carter will be the same.

Nobody had ever heard of John carter. So with zero name recognition it just looked like another weird alien fighting movie. And that’s a very silly name for a movie like that.

I think this movie was a decade too late in the making… if it were to have come out in the late 80’s-90’s,,, I sincerely believe the reception would have been quite different. This movie is so good and creates such fantastical storytelling.

One of disney's most underrated films.
That was a great scene . He was fighting for the noblest of reasons. And you saw at the end he was standing on a hill he had made of the green men. I sure even the people he were fighting were impressed & were fighting for the prize of being the one who killed him instead of just fighting.
As far off from the books as it was, stand-alone this was an epic movie and it saddens me we didn't get more.

Edgar Rice Boroughs was a genius and his sc-ifi stories besides Tarzan were great to read. He also wrote a Western or two.

Still one of the best scenes in general, still one of the most underrated movies in general, still one of the best non-typical Disney movies in general, especialy compared to what Disney shits out nowadays!
I'm still convinced though, most of the classics, and by that I mean old stories like "Tarzan, The Alamo, Moby Dick", that's not good enough by todays standard, as movies they usualy flop, because it's not trendy anymore.
"John Carter" might fit better as animated, but this movie is still quite good, a shame it didn't get the recognition it kinda deserved.
It definitely deserves it now.
Things like "War of the World & Sleepy Hollow" are still profitabel because it's Alien-Invasion & Horror, most people like that. But even those are technicly speaking too oldschool, so they have to be modernised quite heavily.
Lovecraft is rising in popularity as well, though still a very hard thing to do.
Personaly I like the old movies, they're still good.
This movie was way before it's time because I learned to appreciate it way more than when it came out

This movie has a storyline, a message , if you understand the end....is a great meaning. I just love it from the beginning. A guy is looking for gold....he finds love in his heart. Big Bravo for the writer.
As a 65 year old I still love his amazing movie and why wasnt there ever a 2 or a remake.

You should really read the book series by Edgar Rice Burroughs. So much better than this simple and poorly done movie. Once read, you’ll see why the Burroughs estate didn’t want to have any movie made from the books. Still don’t know why this was made. I was so disappointed.
