Yea, like, who could think that picking out enemies one by one with a few dozens elite soldiers using expensive gear that takes heavy casualties in the very few minutes of the battle already won't be that efficient strategy when scaled up to a crowd of thousands such enemies? They simply didn't have such computation technology back in the mystical times!
These soldiers are hilariously inefficient. 1 Kill per spear with like a 50-70% death chance. Meanwhile they could just THROW the spears for the same result...
"Couldn't we try constructing slits in the wall itself through which spears could be stabbed, thereby offering the wielders a greater chance at survival?" "...Nah, make their job ultra high risk by having them bungee down in the ranks of the monsters at the base of the wall."
I forget : Did they ever address the stupidity of the crane corps strategy, or have one of the characters say "Hey, the blue ones should do *this* instead"?
Honestly its not that stupid, it's just the weapon choice. Swords would be wayyy more efficient than spears. Granted its still not a smart strategy, but swords>spears in this scenario
The blue squadron is the most beautiful and spectacular, yet, it is the most stupid one, the slowest to attack, the one that exposes the most the warrior to the enemy and the one with the shortest range weapon. A waste of resources.
This movie could have ended at the very first scene. They knew the enemy would be coming through that valley. All they had to do was ambush them with some flammable liquid in the valley and burned them all
But then you wouldn't have a two hour metaphor illustrating how Chinese obedience to order and use of technology is superior to, and the reason to expel a foreign influence
This scene is what I constantly think of when I am playing Total War: Warhammer and I am trying to hold the Great Bastion of Cathay against the Chaos hordes that constantly attack lol.

So in this story they have black powder, they know the avenue of approach for those monsters, and they have 25 years in between raids. Wouldn't it be more wise to layer the entire valley with gun powder then fire those fiery balls on it once the army is one the powder field.
I keep looking at the crane corps thinking maybe what they were going for was like keeping the monsters focused on them since they’re alone striking one at a time by themselves. Pretty much a distraction and keeps a good chunk of the monsters focused on them. While the infantry and archers pick off the remainder of the monsters coming up the walls. Idk the idea came out poorly 😢
Thing is, the crane corp could have kinda been a decent strategy if they were simply meant to take out specific targets and sabotage the creatures climbing the walls. Instead they go straight to the ground lmao

They jumping down the wall, give up the Highground and a fortified defense position contrary to all military tactics and their losses are in no reasonable proportion to the number of kills. If they let the girls also shoot arrows from the wall, they would kill more enemies and have fewer losses. If everyone in this army acted like the blue suicide bungee jumpers, the monsters would have won tomorrow...

They had the "black Powde"- basically dynamite, but they didn't use it to blow the enemy to pieces 😂 also if you had all the preparation time, why not get 100x more archers and more long distance Combat😂
all those formations and defenses but no ditch, they could just make a huge trench with spikes underneath, and perhaps any huge spike under the wall to stop them from blobing up

Theres 2 ridges on both sides of the mountain by the entrance they could have installed explosives on those sides...wait til the horde is about halfway through then detonate it killing half or maybe more of those monsters. It may not stop them, not unless those things kfnow how to dig, but at least give them time to recoup etc
The tactics are appalling but the visuals are magnificent. Although I saw it reviewed as the closest we'll get to an Orcs Must Die movie and I can't unsee it.
I haven't watched the full movie, but I have to say- this battle looks fucking INCREDIBLE. Like. Bravo to the Set designers, the costume designers, the personnel coordinators, I mean, it just looks fucking incredible. The only thing I find bizarre is the ladies that jump down to spear them. Why? Surely it'd be more useful if they were just also archers. I mean, with a wall that tall, you could literally just throw rocks off the top and the velocity would be enough to smash their heads open. The only thing I can think of is the Order of the Stick trope, where Xykon just sends his hobgoblins at the wall continuously, and the defenders think they're winning because they're killing so many of them, until finally Xykon has a ramp of dead bodies to ride up on, which they then did the same exact trope in Game of Thrones, too. But I still don't understand how that helps. They're spearing them, not pulling them up, or pushing them back. How does that prevent buildup at the base of the wall? Idk. Other than that, this battle is incredibly well-made.

A pair of reasons: First, the Crane corps as seen in the film well ill-used. They're meant to pick off the few that break through before they scale the wall. Being sent in with a line that thick was a panicked response when the long distance weapons didn't thin the herd enough. Second, the monsters will be distracted by people, but not by rocks. The goal of the Crane corp is for a single warrior to dive down, distract a beast trying to scale the wall, slay it, then pop back up beforehand. That many bloody rings should be the result of the full battle. That it was the first few minutes was the sign of incompetence
they lost most of the bible on the silk road and when the chinese merchants finally got home, they literally only had a scrap of paper including the verse saying to feed your enemies
The disbelief is so far suspended just by the concept of this movie that I honestly don't care that they decide to jump over the wall with spears instead of just throwing them, we are beholden to the rule of cool at this point
I found this movie very entertaining. Very unusual these days to see hundreds of extras in a film. I prefer monsters in my movies that we can meet on the battlefield and possibly defeat instead of slasher films or people creeping around dark houses or tunnels, etc..
The Crane Corps are Women who said, they were better Warrior then Men. Maybe they should have put them in an Morningstar-Iron-Cage as decoy 5-10 feet above the monsters. Dropping Kunais from the wall would have more effekt then the crane corps.

If you look closely, everytime a member of the Crane Corps gets grabbed by a Tao Tei, several of the Tao Tei stop climbing the wall to eat. The purpose of the Crane Corps is to bait the Tao Tei so they don't climb the wall, get a few kills and die to ensure the Tao Tei are too busy eating to climb the wall. We also sometimes see a different weapon/strategy used against the Tao Tei in every fight because it's established that the Tao Tei are intelligent and will probably find a way to counter strategies used over and over again. Is the Crane Corps strategy effective from a pragmatic perspective? Yes. Are there better and more effective strategies? Also yes. Why do the wall soldiers still use the Crane Corps strategy despite having an endless number of alternatives? I don't know. That is the real question.

The few monsters she might kill are not worth the losses she suffers, and it doesn't help keep the monsters away from the wall. It may be meant to show courage and self-sacrifice, but it actually just shows that the line between courage and stupidity is very thin...
