Bought a Prius the day after I watched another video by this guy...no joke. Got me a 2013 Prius v! Just got back from a 16-day Covid-approved trip...so awesome when it was 14 degrees outside and I stayed a comfy 70 degrees all night. Thanks so much dude! Full of great advice!
That's so cool, glad you are enjoying the Prius you bought! Sounds like a fun trip. At 13 degrees outside and 70 degrees inside, I imagine the engine was kicking on pretty often? I usually keep it on 65 when it's THAT cold just to stop it from kicking on so much just because that is such a big temperature difference. Congrats on getting a Prius v, they are much bigger and roomier than the regular Prius, and they don't make them anymore
@@MountainSpringsAdventures thank you! I really appreciate everything you are doing here and all the neat details you share. The first cold night I also set it to 65 at first but then I jacked it up to 70 and really didn’t notice any difference in the on-off cycle timing (I didn’t do a scientific test though). When it’s that cold the whole engine has to heat up for it to remain at 65 or 70 with a lot of frequency, the few extra degrees may have kept the engine on for 10-20 seconds longer but I really didn’t notice it. Cycles were 9.5 min apart. IMHO, well worth the extra quarters of gas money for a comfy steady-state environment. Looking out at the people in the campground early morning at 33 degrees all bundled up with hot coffee in hand and misery on their faces, I was in a t-shirt and feeling quite good about it all.
@@bryanalten wow, 9.5 minutes is awesome. mine only goes 5 minutes, it could be because mine is older, it's a 2006. Yeah Winter camping can definitely be uncomfortable lol, glad you enjoyed it
After watching you cook, I have a suggestion. Next time, try cooking the hotdogs/meat first. Then use the same unwashed pot to cook the rice or beans next, great flavor is still in those little burnt bits on the bottom!
One of the first people I found who is car living but also eating frugally and healthy. A lot of nomads are either eating instant food, or eating out all the time.
You can cook anything in an electric pressure cooker, even cakes! You really won't need a microwave, most have a quick saute setting that's good for heating food. The timers on these are a totally convenient feature; you don't have to monitor cooking time, you just set it whether for slow cooking or fast tenderizing or roasting or baking. Mine is a Phillips.

This was a really cool tip-- been loving spraying vinegar!! I'm using it to clean all sorts of things, including my retainers. Also, did you know white vinegar doubles as a sugar free sour candy spray? 😂😂
@@lemonaut1 other people have told me cosori has stopped selling a pressure cooker also. I guess I got this 2 quart pressure cooker just in time. The 3 quart instant pot is just as good in all honesty, it's just slightly bigger
Yeah, I use chemical-resistant spray bottles I get from Menards. I'm sure you can find them elsewhere. Then, I put half vingar solution, and top it off with water. Saves on the amount of vinegar used, and still kills bacteria and viruses from the acidity.
Chickpeas are amazing and really good for you. One spice I can whole-heartedly recommend: Get taco seasoning. It comes in a spice bottle like everything else. Use it instead of salt for some more flavor an a little extra spicy kick (it has a lot of salt in it). It's best to use it when you cook, because it's a little too granular. I've actually taken some and ground it down in a mortar and pestle, and I will sprinkle it on my food.
Thanks, I actually have a packet of taco seasoning, I once read to put it on black beans and make vegan burritos with it oh, I'll try it with chickpeas now

Love my kitchen shears! Mine come apart so you can easily wash them, especially important if you use for meat. I use for snipping bad spots off lettuce, cutting herbs like parsley, basil, etc.. I recommend using a real bowl with a handle, like a soup mug. It is easier to hold onto, keeps food warmer, easier to clean than plastic and better for heating in the microwave. Some have lids, too. And proper silverware, that feels good in your hand; try garage sale or thrift store. Just cause you are in a vehicle, doesn't mean you can't enjoy your meals more, especially when you take the trouble to cook them.

Nutritional Yeast is a lovely condiment that is super nutritious and is jarred to not require refrigeration. It's in flakes, so it sprinkles over food, offering the saltiness (without the salt) and earthiness of a cave/parmesan cheese (without the lactose OR fat.) Blessings!
Great video! I didn't even know there was a steering wheel table, I'm getting one. Also, if you add a small amount of water to the pot after you take out the cooked hot dogs you can deglaze the pot ... and that sauce is delicious, and it cleans the pot. Keep the high heat on while you do it and just scrape in circles with a spatula.
Thanks for the suggestion, yeah I usually do pressure cook a few cups of water for a few minutes just to get it all clean after I fry things, thanks. I never thought to save the water though, good idea
I was thinking the same thing. Saute the meat, veggies, etc. first. Then deglaze that "fond" with hot water. Don't toss that water, instead use that deliciously seasoned water to cook the beans and/or rice. More flavor, less cleanup.
Great video! FYI if you soak your beans in water for a few hours, they cook better, faster, and are easier to digest. It also will profoundly reduce any gas it may cause.

Another great video. Well done, you, for eating so healthy (with a few exceptions). Just so you know, those are dried beans, peas and legumes, not "raw" :) I never would have thought of washing the dishes with vinegar. But it makes sense. My grandma used to clean her windows with vinegar and newspaper lol. Cooking while you drive, I love it! And I never heard that Priuses are called "generators on wheels". That's very interesting. I sort of had my mind made up on a Subaru Forester (which I noticed you used to have), but now I'm considering getting a Prius. Toyota should give you a commission!
Thanks, yeah I meant to say dried beans or whatever. yeah the Subaru Forester is a great car but it wasn't very reliable for me unfortunately. Yeah it would be cool Toyota gave me a commission haha. Glad you liked it
If you get a pot in pot insert for the Cosori, you could use it to reheat your food...and it would do a much better job than the microwave. Might allow you to get rid of the microwave and open up more room. Just a thought. Happy camping!
Dude...you got game. Thanks for all the info and tips. This might be wrong but typically cook beans and rice together in my pressure cooker. Simple, good, saves time and less trouble.
Thanks and you're welcome. yeah I thought about cooking the beans and rice together, but the problem is they take different cook times. Maybe I could cook lentils and rice together? because lentils take a lot less time than thick beans. How long do you cook beans and rice together? And what beans do you use with rice?
Even though the rice cooks longer than it's supposed to still turns out good to me. I've found the pressure cooker is very forgiving but when in doubt just cook longer rather than less or let pressure naturally disipate rather than quick release.
I would say a Prius is the most low key car life car because no one will really know anyone is in there. Great video. Thanks for inspiring others that it can be done. Most gas efficient car too.
Thanks for showing your simple living, if you soak the bean overnight, it will cook in 15 minutes. Just put it in the water before you sleep next day morning it will be ready.
You could have cooked all that together. In one shot, and don't forget a bay leaf and a pinch of gumbo file. Also, could use the "triniity", bell pepper, celery, and onion.
Just remember vinegar is NOT a disinfectant!!! It’s a CLEANER it gets rid of dirt and grime .. but it does NOT kill bacteria!! Get rubbing alcohol., Great video.. be safe 😉
From what I've read, vinegar is a MILD disinfectant. It doesn't do as good as Lysol or rubbing alcohol, but it does kill some bacteria because of its acetic acid.
They sale precut seaweed ! We only need to wash it and throw in any dish that almost finished cooking of cup noodle…. Then it is done ! Very tasty and healthy !
Another cooker I use when traveling is called a hotlogic with a car plug, I use it to cook prepared foods, for my Instapot ( it's being shipped) I'll run it off my Jackery1000 that is connected to my Pruis or solar panels
Nice job on the video and frugal cooking ideas, home or on the road! I like the compact pressure cooker even for my low-on-counter-space kitchen at home. Unfortunately, I'm told my Prius (gen.4) was redesigned (2017?) making it much more difficult to install an inverter. May go with a jackery-style lithium power brick instead. And instead of reheating in a microwave, a 12v "portable oven" or "electric lunch box". Thanks for contributing to the research!
Thank you, so glad you enjoyed it! I thought it was only the brand new priuses, after 2020, that they started putting the 12 volt battery under the hood but I could be wrong. Yeah, I've seen those low wattage cooking appliances, I don't know exactly how good they work, I don't think you can use a microwave with something like a jackery. Good luck with your build though, you don't need a cooking appliance like I have, there are many more options available
@@MountainSpringsAdventures Just FYI, you can use a microwave with a jackery just fine as long as it has enough power. Like I can power a 700 watt microwave with my 1000 watt jackery.
You do a great job of describing everything. Also, it was very helpful to watch you cook a meal in the instant pot from a car. Your videos are VERY helpful - thanks.
You could have a car roof container to store some thing like tools and camping bags or other things. Other thing is the inverter needs a ventilated place. I will bought my friend's 2011 Toyota Prius to do the same. Your videos show and encourage that we need the minimum to enjoy the life traveling. Thanks!!!! 😁🙌
glad you enjoyed it, yeah I'm not putting a storage container on my roof because it would decrease my fuel economy, but I am getting a tool box mounted on the towing hitch
I've got a 2004 Prius and just installed a 1000 watt inverter in it. I so far have a 3 quart instant pot and just ordered a single burner Cusimax infrared cook top with selectable wattage from 100 to 1500 watts. On the burner I can boil, fry, put a small pressure cooker, make coffee, etc. My reason for doing this is to prepare for any power outage that might occur as well as possibly go traveling and do my cooking on board. My inverter has 4 plugs. I bought 4 very long indoor outdoor extension cords so I can power at least my fridge, freezer, basic electronics and a few LED lights in my house in case of a prolonged power outage. I used a Kill-a-Watt to determine how much all the essentials draw and was surprised it came out well below the limits of my inverter. I like the microwave idea, but fear it may take up too much space. Just want to add that one can also fry steaks, hamburger as well as eggs (fried, scrambled, or hard boiled) in an instant pot in the saute mode. Other uses are making yogurt, steamed breads and hot cereals like steel cut oats, multigrain hot cereals, and even spaghetti with noodles. Many many recipes for all this online if you search. My Prius, inverter and Instant Pot are some of my favorite belongings. I'm way over 60 and just like the feeling of having a backup system in place in case of unseen situations.
Love the little pot. Do a little research on oils and what heat does to them. Even delicious coconut oil can be bad for you if you fry in it. You'd be better off investing in good olive oil, if you are interested in health benefits. Adding the oil after you cook is the best idea. Since you save so much money on food, you can afford good oil. That's how I see it, anyway. Best wishes. Good video.
You can get a much smaller instant pot for smaller servings. Three quart In stead of six. We had our first Prius for 17 years. There was nothing wrong with it the hubby just wanted a new one. The only service we ever did was the 5000 mile services a new battery not the hybrid ones the one regular type battery, tires of course and brake service. It also had nearly 400,000 miles on it and got hit by a huge Chevy truck once in Richmond. The side bent in and then popped back into place and there was a scratch.
I’ve been a HUGE fan of dried beans for years! You literally can’t eat cheaper and more healthy than that. I’ll sometimes take 1 lbs of ground meat and mix it in with it. Season it and BAM… you’ve got a meal that last for multiple days.
Nice , but I think I'd try to make room for a two slice toaster for clearance bagels, blueberry eggos and to toast bread . for the knorr pasta/rice sides, just dump hot water into the pouch seal it up (with a chip clip) and either place it into some type of thermal couzi or even chuck it into the instant pot to trap the heat. It should be ready in no time and you could eat it directly out of the pouch.
I actually have a little mini toaster, I just don't carry it in my Prius. yeah that's a good idea about the hot water, thanks, does pasta sides don't need much to cook
This is a very nice travel home. It gives you your financial freedom, and takes you anywhere you want and need to go. You might want to add a food processor to puree your beans so you can add water and cooked potatoes or cooked bagged vegetables from frozen. Add in some Spring salad to it and you can stay more hydrated without the bulk. I love to add spring salad to the beans along with a small amount of cooked chicken, beef. or salmon. Turmeric and red wine vinegar makes it delicious. I don't always use beans. Really, mostly just meat, vegetables, and Spring salad. Lately I've been cooking in a little washed tai rice or a potato. You can refrigerate what you didn't eat and add hot water to some later and make a traditional tasting soup. Stew or soup, they taste the same.
I need to copy this set up. It’s awesome! Thanks for sharing. I love to cook and save money… now that I’m living in my Prius I need to set my electric needs similar to yours. 👍
You can add "Textured vegetable protein" to your bean and rice dishes. They are very inexpensive and have a very long shelf life. Morningstar makes some very good types. But there are others too. Sanjosemike (no longer in CA)
Thank you so much for all that information it was very helpful for me because I'm about to get a Toyota Prius too. I'm just saving for one, of course it's going to be an older model so it won't take me that long to save, it's not going to be a brand new one.
Check into the solar cooker it’s cool and does not take up a lot of space.check out collapsible dishes. They work really well and shrink to nothing. Fantastic really
Love your videos.. very informative! May I suggest that take apart kitchen shears are a better choice, they easily separate into 2 pieces for a more thorough cleaning. Particularly important since you are cutting raw chicken and other meats. As far as cooking in aluminum foil, it is recommended that you line the foil with parchment paper (wax paper might also work), the point is you DON'T want the food in direct contact with the aluminum, especially if you've salted and/or made it acidic in any way.. it WILL react and aluminum will leach into your food.. NOT healthy. You can Google it. Also, the water bottle pump might be loose because you need a cap on it? I read that they recommend (and sell separately) those caps/48mm? specifically to avoid loose fitting pumps. Oh, and I presume you sanitize that water bottle with a weak bleach solution and then rinse every month or so? Hope I have helped you in some small way as your videos have been very educational for me as well! Again, LOVE your videos!!! Generous of you showing us the ropes. How is your starter battery doing? Have you had to replace it yet? Do you think it is because of the extraordinary workout you give it?? In any case, I imagine it's cheaper and easier to use and replace your starter battery than buy/use a separate gas generator and LIon battery setup for the Prius! Certainly cheaper than rent and/or utility hookups! Always looking forward to your new videos! One of the few subs I set the bell for!
I was just trying to figure out how to cook while camping in my SUV. Fascinating about the Instant Pot. I will have to get a big enough solar generator since I don't have a Prius:) wish they made a smaller Stanley french press.
I bought an extra pot for pressure cooker so I can make several things at once (prep food for fridge) my go to meals when I’m on the road are chicken egg noodles celery if ya like, chicken Cubes( homemade chicken noodle soup) kabasa and cabbage or potato’s 3 min in your pressure cooker and yum! I don’t know how people survive without one 😂😂😂
There are great disposable dishes and cutlery made from bamboo very cheap and you can use them in a campfire when you are finished eating dinner. I've only seen them online.
“Press n Seal” wrap, I think, is way better than ur average wrap. Living intentionally takes confidence. Nicely done. I’m enjoying some plain Navy beans for brunch right now😉. Awesome. Raisins in the oatmeal?
Wow love your videos! I already have a Prius. I was shopping for a van last year then covid and now they are crazy expensive. So guess I have the perfect travel transportation and I don’t have to spend a dime !
You should get an air fryer too makes life 1000 times easier and it is essentially an oven. Most things I cook only take 5 min too rarely have to turn it to anymore than that. Very essential if you want something fast without an oven.

Glad you liked it
True..
If you get a pot in pot insert for the Cosori, you could use it to reheat your food...and it would do a much better job than the microwave. Might allow you to get rid of the microwave and open up more room. Just a thought. Happy camping!
Thanks for the tip!
Great idea!
Good demo on cooking with an electric pressure cooker! Love the perfect 2 qt size!
Glad you liked it
Your cooked food storing ideas are great, too!
Cool thanks for the tip, I'll try to cook beans + rice together next time, I just didn't want the rice to come out mushy from being overcooked
@@MountainSpringsAdventures Start the beans, then throw the rice in with additional water and finish them together. Should work.
This is really cool. Minimalist lifestyle while exploring the country.
Thanks, yeah I never thought of it as being a minimalist but I guess you could put it that way
I would say a Prius is the most low key car life car because no one will really know anyone is in there. Great video. Thanks for inspiring others that it can be done. Most gas efficient car too.
Thanks, glad you liked it
You are a good practical man and a good cook. I like to cook as well and I learned something new from you. Cheers.
I appreciate that!
Thanks for showing your simple living, if you soak the bean overnight, it will cook in 15 minutes. Just put it in the water before you sleep next day morning it will be ready.
Thanks for the tip! I might try that soon
You could have cooked all that together. In one shot, and don't forget a bay leaf and a pinch of gumbo file. Also, could use the "triniity", bell pepper, celery, and onion.
Love the vinegar tip!
Great!
Just remember vinegar is NOT a disinfectant!!! It’s a CLEANER it gets rid of dirt and grime .. but it does NOT kill bacteria!! Get rubbing alcohol.,
Great video.. be safe 😉
From what I've read, vinegar is a MILD disinfectant. It doesn't do as good as Lysol or rubbing alcohol, but it does kill some bacteria because of its acetic acid.
You seen like a humble dude. Good video. Thanks!
Glad you liked it 😊
They sale precut seaweed ! We only need to wash it and throw in any dish that almost finished cooking of cup noodle…. Then it is done ! Very tasty and healthy !
I love the bean selection and your natural filming style. ✌
Thanks so much!! Im planning on getting active on my channel again soon
Loved it ! More cooking videos please 🙌🙌
Glad you liked it, ok I might do another one soon
Love the content you're putting out!
Thanks, glad you enjoy the vids!
Another cooker I use when traveling is called a hotlogic with a car plug, I use it to cook prepared foods, for my Instapot ( it's being shipped) I'll run it off my Jackery1000 that is connected to my Pruis or solar panels
What you’re doing is amazing, keep up the good work
Thank you so much!
Hi there. I’m just wondering when are you going to post a new video..
Soon
The vinegar trick was the best new idea I learned.
That's great
This is cool. I bet you could bake a cake in the pressure cooker using one of those Pyrex bowls
good idea, maybe I'll try. there are so many things you can do in a pressure cooker
You should and add it to a video!
Get an older Prius. They last forever. Mine's a 2004 and still going strong.
@@serenityjewel Thanks for confirming what I was researching!!
You do a great job of describing everything. Also, it was very helpful to watch you cook a meal in the instant pot from a car. Your videos are VERY helpful - thanks.
Thanks, so glad you enjoy the vids
Haha this is better than my most of meals with a full kitchen with all appliances. Healthier too.
thanks!
I bought bamboo "silver" ware....much better for the environment compared to the plastic silverware and they are easy to clean and cheap.
Great tip!
I LOVE how neat and organized you are!!!
Thanks, I try to be 🙂
@@MountainSpringsAdventures you're welcome 😁
Love the little pot. Do a little research on oils and what heat does to them. Even delicious coconut oil can be bad for you if you fry in it. You'd be better off investing in good olive oil, if you are interested in health benefits. Adding the oil after you cook is the best idea. Since you save so much money on food, you can afford good oil. That's how I see it, anyway. Best wishes. Good video.
Yeah thanks, I know frying is unhealthy.I know that coconut oil and olive oil are two of the more healthy oil, canola oil is not very healthy
You got everything but the kitchen sink.👍
The new Julia shielals
Lol yeah a sink would be nice
@@MountainSpringsAdventures 👍🤗🙋
Great organisation. Greaseproof paper/baking parchment is much healthier than aluminium foil. Xxxxxxxx
Great video! Never knew anything about instant pots, so this was enlightening. It seems very versatile.
Thanks, yes it is versatile
@@MountainSpringsAdventures For the 2q I-pot, how big does your inverter need to be?
Using a truckers lunchbox (12v loaf oven) now.
It’s an acquired skill. Everything either under cooked and/or burned on the bottom!
You seem healthy and happy. Good for you.
I did enjoy this . Thank you for sharing your culinary expertise.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Glad you like it, and thank you for the tips
I need to copy this set up. It’s awesome! Thanks for sharing. I love to cook and save money… now that I’m living in my Prius I need to set my electric needs similar to yours. 👍
You are so welcome!
Awesome dude! Wow the Prius is really amazing!
Loved this video, car cooking is always interesting 🤔 🫘🍚🌭
That was so informative. Thank you for posting.
You can add "Textured vegetable protein" to your bean and rice dishes. They are very inexpensive and have a very long shelf life.
Morningstar makes some very good types. But there are others too.
Sanjosemike (no longer in CA)
Thanks for the tip!
Thank you so much for all that information it was very helpful for me because I'm about to get a Toyota Prius too. I'm just saving for one, of course it's going to be an older model so it won't take me that long to save, it's not going to be a brand new one.
Loved your cooking 🍳 video portion.
Glad you liked it
Check into the solar cooker it’s cool and does not take up a lot of space.check out collapsible dishes. They work really well and shrink to nothing. Fantastic really
Thank you for sharing your journey!
This is why I want a prius so bad!!!!
Camping in an accord is no fun! Or maybe I'm limiting the unknown magic of camping in an accord 😆
It's fun to see someone using the same things for cooking on the road as myself 😁 I love my lil instapot, rice, beans and spices!
That is awesome!
I was just trying to figure out how to cook while camping in my SUV. Fascinating about the Instant Pot. I will have to get a big enough solar generator since I don't have a Prius:) wish they made a smaller Stanley french press.
There are many ways to cook in a car. Mine is specific to my situation. Good luck
MF has a microwave in a Prius!!! So wild my man. Love watching small camper builds, and this one takes it to another level. Very epic :)
Thanks 👍
This is amazing.
Sounds great!
There are great disposable dishes and cutlery made from bamboo very cheap and you can use them in a campfire when you are finished eating dinner. I've only seen them online.
Thanks for the tips! Ill have to check them out
“Press n Seal” wrap, I think, is way better than ur average wrap.
Living intentionally takes confidence. Nicely done.
I’m enjoying some plain Navy beans for brunch right now😉. Awesome.
Raisins in the oatmeal?
Wow! Well-done. You cook & eat better than many ppl do in sticks & bricks homes.✌🏼
Thank you, yes I got the instant pot because I can eat healthy for cheap by eating freshly cooked rice, beans, and grains
Only one thing missing is a table cloth(you are so neat) I would definitely need one or carpet would be black 🥴 great job!
Yeah tablecloth would be nice haha glad you enjoyed it
@@MountainSpringsAdventures do you sometimes cook the beans and rice together? One of the might turn out too soft I'm sure.
@@NorthlandDWJ yes that's a good idea, I might try it soon
Great video, Tip: Check out "REFINED" coconut oil which does not have the flavor of coconut and is great for cooking frying etc.
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for the tip, I wonder if refined coconut oil is just as healthy
Chickpeas! I throw chickpeas in everything!!
The kids love when I make chickpeas in tomato sauce and serve over brown rice or pasta!
So chickpeas mixed with tomato sauce and brown rice? Are there any other ingredients?
You are very organized and traveling without a lot of canned goods reduces weight.
Thank you, yeah canned food is pretty heavy, it's good to have as little weight as possible
Your Greek salad looks great! My cousin is from Athens.
Wow love your videos! I already have a Prius. I was shopping for a van last year then covid and now they are crazy expensive. So guess I have the perfect travel transportation and I don’t have to spend a dime !
Glad you like them! yeah Vans are great butthey are expensive and you can't sleep with the air conditioning running like you can with Prius
Try overnight oats instead of cooking them. I love it mainly coz of the texture and of course convenience. Oats get slimy when cooked.
Great setup ;one suggestion, try cooking the rice with 1:1 ratio of rice to water though, then it wont be all mush
Thanks for the great tips, always looking for easy cooking ideas. Happy camping.
You're welcome, same to you
looks delicious!
You can fry inside the hotpot by leaving the lid off
You should get an air fryer too makes life 1000 times easier and it is essentially an oven. Most things I cook only take 5 min too rarely have to turn it to anymore than that. Very essential if you want something fast without an oven.
That's interesting, thanks for the tip, I might look into air fryers in the future
That was Awesome! So enjoyed your video!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I definitely have to get one of those instant pots, even for in the house.
Yeah they're a little tricky to learn at first, but once you learn how to use them they are great
Absolutely loved this video❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Go to Japenese or Korean market and buy the dry seaweed to bring a long ! It is very healthy and very fast too make meal with !
