I've been a full time vanlifer (Ram Promaster High Top) for the last 4.5 years. Having a vehicle to stand up in (I'm 6 ft 2 inch) is such a pleasure. I can stand up straight with sneakers on quite comfortably inside my van. I think that people go for the Prius mainly for its gas mileage, which I'm sure is fantastic. For those looking for from the trenches info, about a Ram Promaster van...I get on average 17.6 miles to the gallon and that is with driving 70 mph + on the open road. I budget for +-$60 of gas per week. My total expenses is (health insurance, taxes included) +- $2500 per month . I financed the van at $250 per month. If you can get/buy a van outright and pinch pennies, I'm sure you can get away with way under $2000 per month. That should give you something to work with.

Love this! I'm an artist and I sell arts and crafts on the road and online so I bought a Sienna hybrid for the inside storage space; if that wasn't the case, I would have gotten a Prius.
Was thinking of a Model Y and how that would be for living in and this video seems like a perfect comparison. Probably have pretty much the same setup, but with a little extra room in the Y. Camp mode would keep you warm/cool all night without ever having an engine turn on (better for stealth camping. Also, you can run a fridge constantly off the car's battery so you don't have to buy or carry a separate battery. There are tons of aftermarket products for camping in the Model Y such as beds and blackout curtains and stuff, too.
When I have slept in my Prius, even in 100 degree weather, the A/C uses less than 1/10th of a gallon per hour. That's about $3 per night in gas to have air conditioning (or heat, which uses about the same amount of fuel). You can do a lot of traveling for a tiny cost of fuel in a Prius.
Seeing your vids, and having lived in a vehicle several years, I think maybe you could do a vid on creating shade. Seems like a daytime tarp on poles, or at an angle, could help. Probably a tarp a foot or more above a van would hugely reduce temperature inside.
The Prius has a lot of cool features as a hybrid, but there's no way in hell the gas cost to space trade-off could be worth it for me I don't believe in judging others - if this is all she needs, then I'm happy for her- but there comes a point in van/vehicle life when too much downsizing just becomes too similar to the homeless person pushing the grocery cart around I still appreciate when bob shows off these kinds of rigs though. Anyone who has the same reflectix she has have you found that the shrink? I bought the weatherguard window coverings 2 years ago and they’ve shrunk about a 1/4” and the one for the hatchback has to be taped into place! Huge waste of $250!!
As a Prius ages, it is not as amazing. You can’t just sit an idle for hours upon hours as perceived. What people don’t understand is once the Prius is say 5 years old you no longer kick over to battery. In other words the battery only runs the car when you are going 20 mph or less then it kicks into gas mode. Currently with my 2016 I have zero battery usage for traveling. Most people don’t understand this
@@bagelandapriusrv incorrect. I maintenance my car as they say to do. If you read any info it explains the battery only lasts so long. This is why people have to replace their battery usually after 250,000 miles. If you are saying the battery still drives the car then yes. But it no longer can drive the car in battery mode and as a ride share driver I have had so many engineers explain this to be correct. My car has never missed all the maintenance requirements needed. So you are incorrect.
Car living is not for me. I did it in a 76 Subaru years ago when I was young. A few other cars throughout the years. People look at a video like this and think it looks good till you pack all your gear, dog and yourself in there then becomes pretty small space.
People who have, own, rent their homes, RV's, or aren't living off just social security or SS + occasional jobs, just don't seem like they have any reason to be on the road full time and I admittedly have a very hard time understanding why they're out here or sympathetic for their hardships...Those of us just on SS or SS + occasional jobs are probably on the road to not be paying rent to a landlord offering nothing more than a roof and to feel like we get a long vacation... JMO...How can they possibly relate to people whom are struggling to get by when they have the resources to cover every issue... =(

I don't know seems like
Some people are looking for something.
As always Bob does a good job interviewing these nomads.
?
Interesting to see different ways of vehicle living.
I am saving for a Prius Prime. I wish Toyota would make a Van version.
They do. It is the Toyota Sienna Hybrid
Yes, something bigger than the Sienna...something to stand up in!
@@reludennis I'd like it to be a little smaller than the Sienna and plug-in is a must, that the Sienna does not have.
you need to cover the inside of the tote handles with tape!.. thats where your dust is coming from!

Anyone who has the same reflectix she has have you found that the shrink? I bought the weatherguard window coverings 2 years ago and they’ve shrunk about a 1/4” and the one for the hatchback has to be taped into place! Huge waste of $250!!
I think all reflectix shrinks and expands
@priusvgypsycatcompany7013 I bought some HVAC insulation from Lowe's & it works great, just need a little velcro
thanks bob...she's a sweet lady..
I loved my Prius, and now I have a Sienna. Just not ready to live on the road... (with 4 dogs 😉)
Are the ticks really bad in Maine?
Yes!
This amazing woman would have been perfect for submarine service!
Most people don’t understand this
I have to disagree...it sounds like your hybrid battery needs some cells replaced
This seems like an issue with your prius. My 2012 does just fine, and many other nomads use their older prii to keep them comfy 24/7.
2010 here. Mine works fine 220,000 miles
Oh like in tractor trailers do they make a Prius SUV or minivan
Toyota Sienna Hibrid
For the sheer joy of it. Freedom. Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need. Gratitude is riches. Complaint is poverty.
