  • It was an eerie feeling not 'seeing land' for the first time, navigating thru fog across the Queen Charlotte Strait to Deep Cove and onwards thru some gnarly rapids into Drury Inlet, where we had quite the adventure waiting for us..

    WHO WE ARE
    Hi! We're Allison & James 👋 a Canadian Aussie duo who left the conventional life behind to live an adventure-based alternative lifestyle here in the Pacific Northwest! Currently, we split our time between land and sea - living part time in our tiny home in the woods and the rest of the year living on our floating tiny home, exploring the epic coastline of the PNW! Continually chasing our dreams of adventuring off the beaten path & living a more sustainable, self-sufficient life.

    Folks have lots to say about navigating safely in fog.. for us this was a good opportunity to practice navigation skills, following a manual heading on our trusty compass from the helm. With your nose to the wind, ears tuned in and eyes peeled to the indistinct horizon its amazing how much information you can take in.. body and mind become a pure sensory interface between the boat and surroundings. The smell of sealife buzzing around a kelp patch, the distant rumble of a tug towing a boom, the shadow of birds flying just beyond the fog line. Subtle clues from your surroundings that you might not otherwise notice.
    It's both eerie and serene..

    I must agree, just so beautiful with the fog and mist and the islands and trees breaking thru. Another fantastic video. Thx

    I love the fog. Maybe not so much when in a boat close to shore. I am in awe of your photography/video/editing skills. Loved it ♥️

      Fog always reminds me of NL. The fog bank retreating thru the narrows almost every morning... so beautiful!
      Awe, happy you enjoyed it, thanks momma!

    The many moods of the west coast........ mysterious, challenging (waters and navigation) and warming (sun). Getting lots of mileage under your keel will give you confidence . Really enjoying your videos.- thank you ..

      Love the range of ever-changing moods in the PNW, that + the landscapes are really inspiring to film. So glad you're enjoying the stories we share Nancy, thank you for your kind comments.

    I love where you guys are at. I’d much rather sail along this coast rather than the tropics any day. The glassy water is meditative.

      Ditto, it’s such a spectacular part of the world. We may have spoiled ourselves starting our sailing journey here, we’ve convinced ourselves we’d be unhappy anywhere else! Although Scandinavia or Chile also sounds fantastic..

    Thanks for sharing another part of your great adventure. I was wondering what the crab was thinking when not letting go of the crab pot? Then I remembered to picture of the frog being swallowed by bird...never give up. Thanks again, see ya next week.

    • @AllisonandJamesSailing
      @AllisonandJamesSailing  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I have often thought about what the crabs actually think about.... do they have social structures... do all their dreams and aspirations run through their little crabby minds when I flip them over in preparation to consume them... their will to live is very strong! Fun fact most crustacean are evolving into crabs, it's a fascinating phenomena know as Carcinisation and a fantastic example of convergent evolution. They're so cool and very tasty....

    Here's another tip: There is going to be more wood in the water on days with big tides. The bigger tides around new and full moons lift wood off shores where they have been accumulating on since the last big tide. Also, if you see one, there's probably more--the driftwood tends to follow tide lines in the water.

    • @AllisonandJamesSailing
      @AllisonandJamesSailing  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Mike, there is always more wood in the water! We've encountered patches that you really have to weave the boat through, especially in areas where active logging is taking place. In the wake of big tides and big storms we usually encounter much more floating around! Thanks for checking out the video mike!

    Hello again. First have got to say that is one of the best sweaters I've seen in a long time, with the skiing 'roo. I wore a classic 1960s style red wool sweater with the white stripe for many years. Not many people "got it". At about 3:30 I saw you were reading what appeared to be a guide. Any suggestions on good guide books? At the prices they are getting I am trying to purchase only good ones. Every two seconds I could take a still of your beautiful cinematography and would love to decorate my home with those artistic shots. Absolutely great!

    • @AllisonandJamesSailing
      @AllisonandJamesSailing  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Peter! I love that sweater, it’s a staple of my wardrobe and 100% a classic! The guide we were reading was the dreamspeaker guides, they have some cool water color maps but honestly there’s more info in navionics about anchorages. Exploring the coast of British Columbia by don and reanne Douglas is probably the most comprehensive, split into two volumes it’s a beast but worth having onboard. Thank you for your lovely kind words mate!!

    God you two make me happy. I don’t want it to end! Can we cruise all year long on our coast ? I’m days away from selling everything and slooping the BC coast for the rest of my life ! Thank you 🙏

    • @AllisonandJamesSailing
      @AllisonandJamesSailing  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Awe if you have any desire at all to do it, we one hundred percent encourage you to go for it! Cruising this coast has created happiness for us incomparable to anything else. And you don’t have to have a fancy expensive boat ;)
      You can absolutely do it all year round! just need a good heater onboard (which we dont have yet) and preferably some sort of enclosed cockpit to minimize exposure to the elements (also on our to do list :)

    Awesome! I use the AIS app on my phone though probably not a lot pf cell coverage in the Pokemon islands :) safe travels-

      @AllisonandJamesSailing  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I didn't realize there's an AIS app, we'll check it out! The cell coverage is certainly lacking once you get across onto the mainland, but it's pretty decent while out in queen charlotte strait!

    Very nice video! Another beautiful place. Your images are so nice, you're not filming with a gopro I guess? What's your camera? I bet one of you is into photography? Thanks again for this amazing video that integrates so nicely nature and sailing. 😊

    • @AllisonandJamesSailing
      @AllisonandJamesSailing  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks so much Daniel! Neither of us are very practiced with photography but we would like to be good at it, so we really appreciate compliments like this! We do use a GoPro but we don't love the quality so we mostly use it for shots where we can't hold the DSLR - a Canon Rebel T7i. Its a very entry level camera that I don't think Canon even makes anymore. Really stoked to upgrade someday when the budget allows and be able to purchase a skookum cam with a better sensor and a good zoom lens!
