    A lovely part of the world to explore! Years ago I had the pleasure of working as a private chef on Little Dent Island, which sits smack dab beside the Devils Hole. It was something to sit on shore and watch those rapids rage at max flood! I did get to sail my boat there and tie up, but evening sails were certainly not an option with the only minutes long slack tide there.

      Trev mate! I bet it would have been Amazing to watch those rapids rage, not a lot of sailing in that area though aye… stoked to hear about your history as a chef! I had this story in my head that you flew helicopter over mt. Waddington for a living, but I guess that’s more of a hobby 😅 love your channel, we ought to grab a beer sometime soon!

    Hey you guys make going through the rapids look very easy. Guess the trick is to passage through them at either low tide or high tide, smart thinking. Loved seeing the bear prints and the bear and all the other wild life. Great to see Allison enjoying fresh picked berries, are berries bear food? Glad you all kept safe on this trip. See ya next week.

    • @AllisonandJamesSailing
      @AllisonandJamesSailing  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Correct! The trick is indeed to go through when the water stops moving at the low slack or high slack! It doesn’t last long and in a slow moving keel boat it can be a bit tricky with the timing! Berries are a great treat for bears looking to put fat on for winter, it’s fantastic that around this time in the summer the bears have such an abundant food supply that they’re not interested in much else!

    Loving the channel and your travels guys! I am also a BC cruiser and you are in areas I have yet to experience but plan to.
    Question, how accurate was Navionics for the current info to navigate Aaron Rapids?
    Also, can you share what month you were there?
    Cheers and travel safe. Look forward to your next episode.

      Thanks Steve! Stoked you're getting out there and exploring the coast! We headed through Aaron Rapid just after coming out of Bute Inlet in mid August and during a neap tide. The current info on Navionics differed (on that day) to the Canadian Tide and Current table vol. 6 by about 7min. I would suggest cross-referencing between the two sources when planning a passage to confirm the correct timing for slack water. Thanks for watching mate and we hope to see you out there one day!

    Amazing video! I'm planning a similar cruise, I don't have any experience with this area, can you recommend some cruising guide or source of information? Thanks a lot!

      Glad you enjoyed it! If you're heading thru the Discovery Islands and wanting information on timing the rapids in book form we found the Dreamspeaker cruising guides helpful (Yeaden-Jones).
      But the minimum resources would just be to use Navionics and the Canadian Tide & Current Table for the area (Volume 6) 👉charts.gc.ca/publications/tables-eng.html
      Would suggest cross-referencing between the two sources when planning a passage to confirm the correct timing for slack water.

      If you're unfamiliar with timing rapids and understanding 'slack' here is a copy and paste from our response to a comment above. Maybe it's helpful :)
      re Slack - when the tide turns and changes direction, the current ceases and also changes direction. This moment of no current is called slack tide or slack current. You can have a high slack when the tide reaches its maximum height or a low slack when the tide reaches its lowest height. You can expect to see two high slacks and two low slacks in a 24-hour period in most places.
      Slack is crucial when navigating tidal rapids - narrow passages where fast-flowing tidal currents are forced to pass through. They can create dangerous tidal rapids with standing waves, large back eddies and intimidating whirl pools. At first sight, a passage at peak flood with raging rapids might look impassable, when in fact, you just showed up at the wrong time. These passages can be navigable in a sailboat, but only at slack current. If you miscalculate the slack and arrive too late, the current may have already become too strong and you may have to wait for hours before the next window of opportunity to pass.

      @@AllisonandJamesSailing thanks a lot. I have experience from tidal areas (Scotland and Brittany, plus I got RYA DaySkipper license), I just dont know anything about this area. I still have a lot to study, because those are completely unfamiliar waters to me. I love the link you sent me, and that it is so easy to get tidal tables and atlas in a printable format for free!

    • @5jhexp
      @5jhexp 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@AllisonandJamesSailing I'm not aware of any single free printable resource like the one you gave me. All charter boats will probably have Admiralty tidal atlas and Reeds almanac (tide tables and other practical info, like diagrams of Harbours, contact numbers etc), but I think most people use Navionics, it is generally quite reliable and detailed. Also check out Stockholm archipelago, it is really amazing sailing area that is not so widely known.
