Just picked up the NEX 5R. Absolutely love it! Truly recommended.
+Nathan McMahon what are the ports on the camera
Having a giveaway that comes out of your own pocket as a sign of appreciation to your subs is pretty unheard of, and amazing. Your videos are great, super professional too. Thanks!
Got one for Christmas, I was amazed with the quality of night pics I took of the fireworks on new years eve.... Gr8 camera.
I always watch your videos when I'm interested in buying a new lens or camera. You explain everything in an easy and understandable way.
Keep up the good work and happy new year!
That's great! I hope you enjoy your camera. You want to know how to use aperture? Just press the menu button, go to shoot mode and select A. The dial on the top will change your aperture. Hope that's what you meant with your question.
Thanks John as always for the great reviews on the 5R.
Also, thank you for always taking your time out to respond to all my emails. You have help me a lot in choosing a good camera. I look forward to more of your great reviews.
Just found your channel a few weeks ago. Love that you focus on Sony for us NEX users. Keep up the great reviews. Can't wait to see your reviews for some of the e-mount lenses coming out.
I really appreciate your videos as they provide valuable insight of a wide range of Sony cameras and accessories.
Your reviews are some of the best, please keep them up! looked into the NEX-5R and you've done it justice here! Great video.
I have been looking at getting a camera in the Nex series and your videos have been the most informative. Thanks for all your efforts!
Last few weeks I've been watching videos about dslrs, hybrids, mirror-less cameras etc. Really like your videos, keep up the good work! :)
Its truly honest, no bias review. Its worth to subscribe.
Thank you John Sison. You have made everybody's choice of selection much much easy.
Especially when you have pointed out the bad point/s regards to the particular camera.
That's most important to everybody because buyers will have no regret on their purchased after watching your truly review review. Thanks again John Sison. We love you!!! Keep it up. Two thumbs up!!! :-))
As usual you give us a fine and really useful review. I've been watching your channel for awhile and eagerly anticipate every new video. You are a valuable resource for us Sony camera buffs!
I would recommend the 5R they have some identical features but they are very different. The 5R has a touch screen, a more flexible articulating LCD screen, smaller, better build, faster autofocus, wifi, downloadable apps, manual control in video mode and an extra dial on top to change your settings. The F3 has a built in flash and that's one of the main points it has over the 5R.
Hey John great review - I still remember your first review and you have come a long way since!
"Straight out of my pocket"
You must have some pretty big pockets. I'm glad there is someone such as yourself giving Sony DLT/DSM reviews.
Great review as always, John! I bumped into you at Sony store in World Square more than half years ago.....It was nice to see you and I hope to see you again. Cheers.
Thanks for the kind words Greg! I hope you enjoy your new camera!
Compared to the NEX-6, image quality will be very similar but one of the main things you will get is the electronic viewfinder and the flash built in as well as the hot shoe for attaching accessories. I myself own an NEX-5R and I'm pretty happy with it and its small enough to carry around. If I ever need a viewfinder, I'll just use either my a77 or a99.
Thank you John - I just bought it last night at Best Buy - trying to learn how to use it....I was using a Cannon Rebel XSI which gave me some problems in which the store gave me a credit to purchase this one.....THX
I hear that this camera is not too different from the F3.... The f3 is significantly cheaper and I just want to use my camera for vlogging, youtube etc... not so much taking pictures.. What do you think? do you think the 5r is worth the extra $150? I've only been looking at the f3, 3n and the 5r because they all have 180 flip up LCD screens which are perfect for vlogging.
Your videos are getting better and better. Keep up the amazing work!
That's a good choice especially if you're just starting out. A lot of people love the 50mm lens. A mic will get you better sound quality but its not really a necessity.
The 18-55mm lens is a zoom lens and a 16mm is a fixed focal length lens so you can zoom with it. You would most likely use the 18-55mm lens for general purpose photography or snapshots.
Of course! Its a bit overwhelming but thank you and to everyone that have commented so far. Hopefully I get more funds to have more giveaways for all of you soon!
Sorry for the late reply. I would probably go for the a58 because of the new sensor that's in the camera but the a57 can be found very cheap now. The a57 has full manual control, I'm not too sure about the a58 but the a58 is the new entry level model now.
I don't often use the flash and try not to use it as much as possible but there are just times when you do really need the flash so I just leave it on the camera.
Thanks for your reviews. Always watching them, they're very interesting and helps to solve questions before purchasing equipment.
John, I think most of us would prefer that you accept our thanks for your reviews. Great information with none of the funny stuff like some other guys. Thanks again!
Hi I'm trying to choose from between NEX-5R and A5000 but can't decide!! They're both on sale and have the same price! I'm used to a point-and-shoot, and my iphone, but want to upgrade to a better camera!
Great review John!! I'm learning so much from watching your videos ... keep them coming!
I prefer the kit with the 16-50mm kit lens because it allows the camera to be more compact but it doesn't look like its available in the US for some strange reason. You can always import it but that's really up to you. The 18-55mm kit lens is decent but like I previously said, not as compact.
Before buying this camera, I watched a lot of reviews. This one was by far the best. Thanks!
Thank you for the the compliment and that's great to hear! Much appreciated =.D
I agree, this is definitely the best review
nic broughton Thank you for that! =.)
Mirrorless and EVF...what a game changing technology from Sony. Adjusting your exposure through a bright crispy EVF for that one time perfect shot and 10fps w/ continuous AF for action sports? Unmatched!
As a new photographer and having just purchased the 5R I found this video very helpful. I look forward to watching some of your tutorials! Keep up the good work John!
I really enjoyed using the 35mm f1.8 and I would highly recommend that but if you want to shoot more portraiture the 50mm f1.8 would be the better choice and if you weren't on a budget you could get the 24mm f1.8 zeiss lens instead.
Great review. Just got mine yesterday. Hoping for good weather to get outside and put it to work. Already looking at getting the 35mm 1.8 lens based on your recommendation. Thanks and keep up the great work.
which one is better or your personal preference?im confused which one to buy.
With autofocus speed the 16-50mm will be slightly faster. Its supposed to be shipped worldwide at the end of the month.
Goodonya John! Great Aussie doing a great job. Easily the best 5R review on TH-cam! Your style is friendly, warm and engaging. I just bought this camera and was really pleased to find your great videos and channel.
As usual a informative review of yet another great Sony product I have been looking at the NEX range for some time now and I think if I don't win one I may just have to go out and buy one many thanks for you time to put these reviews together.
Yes it has the miniature effect in the camera.
I have a 5N (which I love) is it worth upgrading to the 5R or 6? Video is my primary purpose.
Impressive considering the size camera.
I hope it comes out a app with a higher bitrate for the video mode.
I love your videos, and cameras! I've been watching them allday to keep me busy over the holiday vacation! They're amazing! Keep it up John! =]
Seems like you're really getting a hang of this. The reviews keep getting better and better. Keep up the good work.
Happy birthday Jhon .... Excellent review helped me out with clearing some confusions on the Sony NEX 5R ....
With the smart remote control app you can use it as a monitor and take photos via your smartphone.
I haven't actually but I assume you won't get TTL if it did work so it will all be manual.
Your videos about camera are amazing! You give so much detail!
Would it be the same quality, etc if I get the 5T as compared to let's say the Canon T5i? Or would a full on DSLR still be a better option for videography?
great review, actually just thought about picking up an NEX for my wife but ive got no clue where to start. already strated spreading the word on your work to get you those subscribers. keep up the good work bro!
hEY jOHN whats the difference between sony 5r and sony 5rk?im a confused which one to buy thankyou
I've had a few people ask me about the VG30. So I guess I'll do an unboxing and a review from a photography perspective. If there's one thing I like about the VG30, its the 18-200mm powerzoom lens. Stay tuned on it! =.)
Thanks, looking to get in to photography.
Well made easy to understand review of Sony Nex 5 R I am thinking of buying this camera and the review was very helpful. Thanks!
Just discovered this channel.. and after watching a few of your vids, I think I've decided to get the nex 6 just because I don't particularly care for the touchscreen and would much rather have the built in viewfinder. Great job on the reviews mate!
Hey John,
Your fast becoming my number 1 stop for Sony alpha reviews. Keep up the good work spreading the alpha knowledge. Remember knowledge is power!
Great informational video review. I appreciate you taking the time out to review these cameras.
That's great! Hope you're enjoying it. As for a lens suggestion, it really depends on what you want to photograph. If you're going on a trip, you might want to consider an all rounder type of lens that will allow you to get shots that are wide as well as something that lets you zoom in. I probably would suggest the 18-200mm LE lens or if you don't mind changing lenses, the 55-210mm. I'm assuming you have either the 18-55mm or 16-50mm kit lens?
Great camera happy on having it but I'm going to change the 16-50mm power zoom for the 16-50mm a-mouth 2.8. What you think about the change. Thanks and great video.
The a99 review will definitely be up next week. Reason for the delay was because there was someone stole my camera with the memory card with the footage in it.
The difference would be the lens that comes with the camera. The NEX-5RK comes with the 18-55mm lens.
I was just at Wollongong on the weekend with the family and drove to the light house. I was quickly reminded about this video, hehehe.
Great review! I like how your reviews are informational and to the point. You're awesome!
Hey John,
Thanks for the helpful tutorial. I just bought one for my upcoming trip to Greece. Really looking forward to having fun with this camera.
Just picked up the NEX-5R for the first time after buying it 4 years ago. No 4K obviously, but goddam this little camera is powerful.
Just subscribed today...even before I saw this vid! :) Minolta/Sony user for 20+ years! Always been curious about the NEX line. Keep up the good work! Thanks for being here for the SONY fans!
I've always been intrigued by how this modern camera can take on old school lenses. any chance of you reviewing those.
Great video's, love the mirrorless photograhy with the NEX super
Nice review yet again! keep up the good work!
Have you tried using Sony flash on other brands of DSLR
Keep up the good work John.
Presentations are always informative, thoughtful, interesting and a pleasure to watch.
hi John, thanks for the great video. i am thinking of upgrading to this camera from a poiint a shoot. hope you will post more hands on video for this camera nex-5r
I really appreciate your videos as the provide valuable insight on different Sony products.
which one would be better
Sony NEX-5R (or) Nikon 1 V1 (or) Canon EOS-M ?
NEX-5R
For video, I would probably wait for the NEX-7 replacement mainly because there is no way to use external mics. NEX-6 has no mic input. NEX-5R can only use the Sony mic. But if that isn't a big problem the video quality would be very similar.
Hey John I like your reviews, and I must admit the photos you took with the NEX-5R are very impressive! I have the NEX-7 and love it but seeing your photos tells me I need to learn a lot more about photography :) Keep up the good work and keep the video reviews coming ;-)
Hi John, your reviews are really helping me get to know my 5R. Thank you for your efforts.
Great review. I'm thinking of buying NEX 5R end of this month. But the LCD screen can't be flipped fully with the flash attached on the camera. Such a dissapointment.
Flash is absent in the Sony Nex5R .Does it come with the Kit, or need to purchase separately?????
It will be such a pleasure to win this NEX 5R to breath a new life back into my old legacy lenses! Keep up the awesome reviews John!
Dude! Just four hours ago, I was convinced I'd buy another brand of mirrorless but then lingered by the NEX'es in the camera section because they felt pretty darned good! Now doing the research to figure out what I might buy, and your reviews are really helpful... And obviously now, I'd just like to win that NEX-5R!
Hi, I am new to photography and the very first camera review search I found on google was yours. I watched your camera reviews for HX-200V and HX300 and loved both of the reviews for Super zoom categories...
By going through the above video, it feels like I should buy this compact DSLR instead of some mid range DSLRs....
Very good review for the camera, nice documentation and very detailed...
Thanks for sharing all the reviews... Hope to see more...
Hi John, this was a really thorough and great revie!. It convinced me that the NEX-5R is the right fit for me.
Finally a serious and complete Review!! Congrats, nice job!!!
Is there any difference in the pic. quality of nexf3 and 5r.................and which lense works better on nex5r,,,,,16-50PZ or 18-55.
Greetings John,
I was looking for a tutorial on TH-cam for my new camera the Sony NEX-5R. I am so very glad i found you. Your voice is easy to listen to. You presentation is understandable. Your personality is cute. I found other sites too techie and to fast. I am hoping you give a full tutorial on the whole camera.
Thank You for sharing,

Hi Karen. Thanks for the compliments :) I don't have a tutorial up for this camera but if you like, you can join my facebook page (link is in the description) and you can ask me any questions about the camera there. I don't receive all my notifications on my TH-cam so I may miss it if you ask a question here.
Thanks for the review John. I'm considering this camera to replace my Samsung NX1000 which is also an excellent camera paired with 30mm f2 lens.
Would you recommend the 5R over NX1000?
Looks like a big step up from the original...I have been looking to upgrade from my NEX-5
great review, Thanks! I know that your not big on video, but I would like to hear your thoughts on the VG30.
Hey, I just got my camera today! your review really convinced me to get the camera!! great video, do you know how does it works with aperture?
Its noticeably quicker and accurate. I should have done a quick demo of that actually but thanks for liking and subscribing!
Thanks for your reviews, I've been trying to decide between the new generation 16mp hybrid autofocus cameras (Nex 5R/6) or the 24mp CDA (Nex 7). Still haven't made my mind up fully but your reviews definitely help!
Regards from the UK.
Thanks for the awesome review. I have been looking at the SOny NEX line for awhile.
Hi John, great reviews! Learned a lot from them. Keep up the good work!
Grtz!
Hi John i just bought a nex5r because of your great reviews. im going for a trip can you suggest what lens to buy?how about the video do i still need to get a mic for it?
The a99 shoots tethered. I'll do a tutorial on that soon. The a99 review will be up next week for sure.
The lenses that you got are not zoom lenses but fixed focal length lenses. It really depends on the lens that you attach to your camera and not a function of the camera itself. a 16-50mm lens would be able to zoom in and out.
I found the new kit came with the smaller 16-50mm lens .
what is diff between 18-55mm and 16-50mm? witch one get better pic?
hey john, i'm in a dilemma right now i don't know what to buy.
Sony Nex 5R or Samsung NX300.
i've seen that they both have a great build quality. can you give me some advice on it?
