BODY LANGUAGE: A Conversation on Race + Restoration in the Body of Christ

  • Dr. Anita sits with Christine Caine for a conversation about race and the church that will change the way that you see EVERYTHING?
    From its inception, the American church has been divided by race. We want to remember 2020 as the moment in history when the end of this division truly began and an intentional journey back to what the Word says started.
    You are likely to be surprised by what you hear in this conversation. Bring an open mind and an expectant heart. You'll finish with more questions than answers but those questions will be the right ones!

    Understanding of historical trauma of the black person in America is the key to changing the world view of the body of Christ.

    When she said the black person "wants to UNDERSTAND the truth" and the white person "wants to DO better". Now I see why my friends of color keep saying, read this, research this, UNDERSTAND us and our history. And I keep saying, ok but what can I DO?
    This was very enlightening thank you for taking the time to explain and to share.

      I never thought about the difference either. As a black woman, any time I have these types of conversations I always talk from a place of understanding historical contexts.

      Comments that begin with "black person wants" or "white person wants" are inherently racist because they teach that all black or all white want the same thing. When contrasted directly like this they are very racist because it teaches as fact that black and white are different in a non-biological way.

    The amount of affirmation, healing, freedom, and hope this conversation gave me I have yet to be able to express. This is just the beginning of true restoration we as the body get to see and be apart of.
    Thank you

      Thank you Frank. I am tired of having a cold heart and acting with indifference to the issues of race. I am from Canada and I have lived most of my life in other countries as a cultural minority including as a minority in the USA. But I have always been the most powerful person in the room because of my race. I want to use my power to raise up leaders from among the oppressed and the marginalized. Using my white privilege for my own gratification is an offense to God and keeps re-traumatizing my brothers and sisters of other races. This conversation needs to turn into change in laws, and financial policy and public policy.

    Please forgive me Lord, and everyone who reads this, in advance for not being able to put words to effectively convey how much this meant to my heart (and likely the whole church community as well). What you have done here Dr. Phillips is an example of the beauty, love, and wisdom that is possible only with the Spirit of Jesus Christ residing flowing through them. I’m amazed. I’m also encouraged and, as a black man, look up in admiration and want to most definitely give you your props-while, at the heart of it, I’m only praising our Lord Jesus (who alone is worthy of praise) for his love which you artfully, and succinctly, express here. I could go on and on. No one may ever see this. Or maybe think I’m crazy. Lol. (I kinda am. Lolol) But this right here? This thang right here? This brought healing. This brought understanding. This is spiritual food and strength to walk in the Spirit in grace, forgiveness, and power in the protection of almighty God the Father. I pray this resonates throughout the whole body of Christ and fills us up so we love and unite as we should, and we can turn the tide to bring God the glory due his name.❤️💯

    Dr. Anita, thank you so much for sharing your heart so openly. Forgive me, forgive us. I am so sorry. I had no idea of the depth of the history. Even though I was raised in the south, followed Dr. King, I had no idea of how far this reaches. Thank you for educating me. As a wounded person, and yes wounded by Christians, I do hear you about trauma and not being heard. I am so anxious to hear more from you, learn more. We are all parts of the body of Christ, and one part cannot function without the other. God created us in His image with wondrous diversity. I believe that healing and restoration will happen. I will definitely check out Shaun King's site. God bless and keep you!

    This changed me! I read Toni Morrison's Beloved in 1993 and even wrote a paper on the loss of self of slaves. But it was just a head thing, it didn't go to my heart.

    This was my church today. I feel like "thank you" isn't even enough to let you know how much I appreciate this. My heart in any situation is always to figure out the "why". Why is a person responding this way? What are the roots of the situation? Because if we can't identify that, we can't truly heal and move forward. You've hit the nail on the head. I'll be sharing this with my circle because it's so important, and subscribed because I want to hear future conversations.

    Dr Anita This is EPIC!!! I have a request. Can you break this video dialogue into smaller sections of videos? Unfortunately the younger generation and some older need to hear these gems but when they see the length of the video it deters engagement! And we need everyone to digest ALL of this! Thanks for your consideration. I hope my request makes sense.

      I concur with Celina Quinone request and would like to purchase a copy of the tapes. I listened to the first tape that mysteriously appeared on my cell phone. Much of what Dr Anita Phillips articulated are things I heard our mother say about race issues in the church. My mother passed away in 1966 at 52. We were one of approximately 10 Black families reared in Anaconda Montana in the 40s and 50s. I was delighted when I heard Dr. Phillips articulated race in the scriptures! I am looking forward to listening to, sharing and discussing Dr. Phillips` tapes with some of my Psychology and Ministerial colleagues. Eventhough when I was in the Master's Program in The Institute of Black Catholic Studies at Xavier University, their classes on "Black Theology" just briefly touched on the correlation with Christianity never in as broad a way as your discussion did. I am delighted with the information on the tapes. Thank you so very much!
      Sincerely
      Rev. Dr. Fredericka Jackson

      This video should be played in malls, and public places everywhere in the United States. People need to process this information, digest it THEN allow it to feed their mind hearts and souls! This is on point like no other! Dr. Anita, You are The Chosen One for God’s language. I’m 60 years old and have been to all kinds of churches all over this country. Never Ever have I heard Christianity and it’s views by the “races” broken down like this! If this can’t be understood, I say simply, “( Shame).” I can only imagine God’s disappointment of us and our professing the Word, when we refuse to not allow the Word to speak loud and clear, plain and simple to our hearts. I’ll never forget when I was attending a Non Domination church in 07 and I had a church member friend in her early 60’s who was black and from Minnesota. She moved to CA and had been attending the church for a couple of years. One Friday sermon, the church music was playing and she began to dance to it. When the song was done, one of the leaders of the group, a female, called her aside and said, “ We can’t have any dancing in here.” When she shared that with me at a later date, I was floored. I’m like, “ How can someone tell you how not to worship God when you feel the Spirit??” It was The most bizarre thing I had heard in awhile.

    When I was working in Lewisham I went to church on the Sundays and found that I was the token white. However, I found that I was made extremely welcome. However what saddened me is that so often the church divides itself by race when the scripture tells us that we are one body, one spirit, one faith, one Lord, one people and one nation. As a missionary in Nepal and India I found that the church had a real unity which transcended caste. Non-Christians were astounded when they saw Brahmins sitting next to low caste people. That is how the church should be. We should be showing the world how males and females, blacks and whites, Brahmins and Dalits, can love one another. I remember well a sermon when Ephesians 4 was the text. It ended with an invitation to the different castes to hug one another. The elder was asking high caste Nepalis to hug untouchables, which they did! I've never heard a congregation cheer at the end of a service like they did that day as the congregation took the words of the scripture to heart and fitted in to what the bible teaches. The Church has the answer to racism. Let's ensure that we share it with the world rather than being part of the problem.

Thank you, Dr. Anita for having patience to keep trying to help me understand. Please help us continue to know how to repent, love and be a part of restoration.

    There is an inordinate amount of information in here that I was never taught growing up, nor would I have ever known I needed to research it. You don’t know what you don’t know.
    Also, it is a sobering reality to hear Dr. Anita’s grandmother’s life overlapped Harriet Tubman. I mean, let that really sink into your mind.
    I’m ashamed to say the words “that was so long ago” have left my mouth, but they never will again. You know what that statement is? It’s justification of us turning a blind eye (maintaining silence) to the pain, suffering, injustices, and gross mistreatment of other HUMAN BEINGS.

    One of my Caucasian friends sent this to me. I feel so blessed that my words of saying in 2016 election “you don’t get it” stuck with her. Now this woman is bringing it! I am in awe and love that she took the time to listen to this. This recording even helped me. Amazing. Thank you! And I am subscribed now. 💕

    I am a life long Christian since 8 years old and now am 67 years old. Never in my lifetime have I heard a person of color with such good credentials and understanding explain the underlying cause of racism. God bless you Dr. Phillips for opening up my eyes. Many tears flowed along with a prayer of repentance for even what I did not know. All people need to hear this to begin a real unifying of the body of Christ!

    • @anniesmith7957
      @anniesmith7957 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I confess to having had this thought and have recently learned how to correct it so it is a true compliment. Instead of saying I’ve never heard “A POC with such good credentials and understanding...” just say you’ve never heard a PERSON with such good credentials and understanding. Otherwise it implies/reveals that we expect a POC to be uneducated or inarticulate. (We need to not only correct this in our speech but challenge this implicit bias in our hearts as well). Only just learned this myself. Hopefully I understand it correctly!

    • @MrJerry8159
      @MrJerry8159 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@anniesmith7957 with all due respect, I felt I needed to expressly say a POC as that is germane to my thought as it came from someone who has gone through this struggle all their life. If a white person had said the same thing it still may have been true but not from the perspective of a person who has/is going through what they are talking about. So at least in my mind, identifying this person as a POC was important to my thought. But I would agree with you that I have in the past referred to a person identifying their color (like black) when it didn't matter to the conversation. That, I now know did single them out for their skin color which is not my intent now. But I had to learn that one a while back. Hope this clarifies my thinking somewhat.

    • @anniesmith7957
      @anniesmith7957 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jerry Iverson that makes more sense. Glad you clarified.

    • @MrJerry8159
      @MrJerry8159 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Lakeisha Carter let me say that I do know what the intent of my heart was when I wrote the above statement and my desire was to compliment Dr. Phillips by acknowleding her credientials as her trauma therapy gave her (possibly) a unique ability to express the racism in a way a non educated person might not be able to do as well. That is why I acknowledged her credientials along w/ mentioning her being a POC also giving her much more insight. Having said that, I do sincerely apologise for offending anyone here on these comments. I could have stated something like I appreciated her education which gave her better ability to break it down for those like me who never understood it until I watched her. I do hope we can go forward in these emotionally charged times showing grace towards each other and at the same time be united together to fight racism. Not as black or white but as Americans. : )
