A Conversation With Stephen King (

- Stephen King's words on page and screen have thrilled and chilled fans for three decades, but opportunities to hear those words spoken by the author himself are rare. For one night only, King took to the stage at the Tsongas Center at UMass Lowell.
I was thirty years old when 'the shining' came out. My wife left for the weekend and on friday night I started reading. I finished about two am sunday morning and I could not turn out the light. No book or movie had ever scared me up until the shining. When I had finished I didn't got to sleep until after sunup. It was a great experience.
Jim Bronaugh + I was reading IT while alone late one night. My daughter had a doll that could carry a conversation w/ you. About half way through the book I heard "DO YOU WANT TO PLAY WITH ME" in a demonic voice because the batteries were going dead. I freaked out. I put the doll in my car, locked it & for some reason put the book in the freezer. Like you I had a long night.(didn't have a TV) Got to love anyone that can tell stories that can get inside your head that way.
Sorry for putting your likes at 13.
I’m currently reading The Shining and loving it!! SK never fails me!
Ha ha, that book has done the same for me on several occasions over the years.
@@cjok8367 I love the part about "putting the book in the freezer" ... like you do...!
I remember hiding The Shining under my bed whilst reading it at the age of seventeen...
It freaked me out...
No s--t Sherlock.
I love how he gives so much credit to his wife for Carrie. Yeah, he wrote it, but she had enough faith in him, his writing and the story to encourage him to finish and submit it. THAT'S a real partnership. And I love how he said, "I had to buy a present for my wife." Hell yeah, he did lol
Stephen King is not only a great writer, but a great salesman for his work.
The art sells itself.
@I am me I suspect Daniels may not be in the art business …
@I am me In what way does that relate to anything I wrote, I wonder …
@I am me Well … in all fairness I do see a sort of supplementary, parallel logic to it now, I just wasn’t personally thinking along the lines of insults. Maybe because I actually am in the art business. Nobody sits around waiting for the piece to sell itself. Nobody you will have heard of anyway xD
To have Stephen King read to you is a rare gift
It's such a delight hearing him speak. He's an amazing story teller, and very down to Earth. It cracks me up every time he drops the f-bomb, lol.
I grew up with a stepfather that I avoided like the plague. Stephen King was my escape. I had an entire bookshelf full of his novels and I holed up in my room with my nose firmly planted in one novel after the next until my 18th birthday. Traded an asshole stepfather for a sadistic uncle (Uncle Sam). Stephen Kings novels followed me around the globe and got me thru some tough days in the army. This man has kept my sanity intact for many years and I am truly grateful for it.
“It was good to have those make-believe worlds to fall back on when the real one had hurt you.” -Stephen King, from “Secret Window, Secret Garden”, Four Past Midnight. (1990, p. 323)
I love stephen king. I have been reading his book's since in my twenties . I am now 63 year's old. Love your books
That's amazing! I'm 20 and just started this year. I can't put any of his books down!
Last year I collected all his work in hardcover. Reading them in publication order. So far Carrie, The Shining, Salem’s Lot, Night Shift. All great stuff.
I was sixteen or seventeen. My first book was Carrie. I'm also 63. I believe I've read everything SK has written.
He has become the ultimate leader in developing Characters.
King's books helped me get through my shitty early teen years and for that he's my hero. While other kids were being normal and social, I was being my quiet self stuck up in my room and reading some king books.
Murphy Star I hear you. I love Stephen too, but John Saul, another horror great, helped me get through some pretty lonely times. I've read many of his books to compensate for a lot of my lonely times until I developed a positive plan to improve my life. Exceptional writers and their books are threapeautic for many people.
@@positivemanifestations3247 You OK now?
King books? Hmmm, and i thought they were Playboys.
Define normal. You probably avoided making some stupid mistakes thanks to Mr King. I didn't discover him until I was 17. The previous 6yrs were nothing but hanging out partying. By 17 I'd decided to get my $h¡# together. I started hanging out with Mr King a lot. Caught a lot of flack about it from "friends" & family. My brother told me " books are for dummies". Trust me,you didn't miss anything & you're perfectly "normal".
@@cjok8367 Your tone is bossy, and you evidently need to look up what "normal" means, not anyone else. Hint: a bell curve.
When King was reading "Afterlife", the whole world, the whole universe got quiet and listened
Except for andre. 🙄
@@KalisIlustrisimoEskrima You have to know these things when you're a King. ☺
Thanks for mentioning the name of the story I'll need a printed version since my L1 is spanish and it was difficult to follow. Anyway it was the first time I saw him reading aloud 💓
except for the joker!!! in the corner
I thought reading a Stephen King book was the best it could be...but hearing Stephen King reading his own new work...well, that's my new favorite thing...Wonderful Story! Thank you Stephen King!
I've read "On Writing" - It's fantastic. LOVED the reading of "Afterlife". To have Stephen King read to you is a rare gift.
kittensugars It’s probably one of my favorite of all of King’s book. Fiction would probably be Dolores Clairborne, but I love King’s natural first person voice.
Here you go guys: 5:00

Raising that kid right. Raising a reader that'll appreciate awesome writing.
I read Different Seasons at that age. Years later it might have been Harry Potter. Thank god for SK.
that little kid at 1:08:08 is having the best day of his life
There are so many people who have read " It" around 10/ 11 years old. I am one. Made my teachers uneasy. Especially that book report I did on Gerald's Game when I was 12...
😂
We love you Stephen King, and I appreciate that you respect your every single reader. Thank you for your brilliant novels.
JESUS PEOPLE. What an honest to God delight to hear Stephen King speak about his life. ideas, and how he lets an idea spark his mind to create his amazing body of work. He rocks. He has scared, terrified and entertained me for over thirty years. An incredible fellow. I am grateful I was able to hear him here.
I'd really recommend On Writing. Totally changed the way I looked at the language in books.
That book was a lifesaver for me. It informed my writing just as much as Alan Moore did.
I love On Writing. It reads so well for a writing book and his memoir is amazing!
I'm rereading it now. I also recommend Writing Into The Dark by Dean Wesley Smith.
That book is a treasure
And...I never laughed so hard while reading a book! Add comedian to his CV!
I hate social media but i love it. I would have never been able to get this knowledge years ago. I have learnt so much. It is what you use it for i guess. Thank you stephen and you tube!
TH-cam is unique in that it's a great tool if you use it properly. There's not much benefit to things like Facebook or Twitter.
"... And she never fucking looked at him!"
I died.
Me too. Can you imagine how that would have felt for King? To be recognized and receive more adoration than a rockstar sitting right next to you?
The thing is, I don't think King would be nearly as famous as he is if his books wouldn't have been turned into movies. Very few people knew who JRR Tolkien was, or JK Rowling, or Tom Clancy before their books became movies. It's Hollywood which makes them famous.
King is just more famous because he wrote horror and people want to know what makes a man like that tick? What does he look like? How does he act? So people research them, Google them, etc. Therefore, he becomes more recognizable.
Just my theory.
Obama is no reason for pride in one's state.
I absolutely love how humble and genuine Mr. King is. Love him!
I'm relieved that they let Mr. King sit down! After that accident, he needs that kind of consideration. I watched this in its entirety. It was so exiting! My favorite author of all time!
King may be called a "horror writer" but he actually writes about real life. I just re-read Thinner and realized it's a metaphor for death by cancer. That's the "hidden depth" of his books and why they are so popular. He allows us to re-experience life and process those emotions. That's the main reason for his amazing success.
No body said it was easy being a genius.
I have been a fan of Stephen King since the mid 70s. The first book i read was Carrie , i was hooked and sought out any book that he wrote. Salems Lot i have to admit is my all time favorite and i have read it seven times and still get the chills. While reading it i got so spooked that i was locking all the windows and doors. Stephen Is a brilliant author and man, I would give anything to have just one hour with him just to talk.
I am so in love with Stephen King, and have been since I was a child.
So if you think about it Carrie saved him. That's kinda oddly touching.
Jay Will And to think he originally threw it in the trash...

Am I the only one who likes the host?? Him and King have great chemistry! He's just doing his job gassing him up and easing tensions! Great job!
Agreed
The man is a national treasure and must be protected at all times
Thanks for sharing. I have been a huge King fan. King was the one who got my started reading. I have been a fan since I was 13 1986 :)
Why people get so mad?! the host didn't do nothing wrong, actually, he made the whole thing a little easier for Stephen. He's Stephen's friend and even if he wasn't, what the hell? He's such a nice guy.
He is Stephen's friend and he's there solely because Mr. King asked him to be.
Hes loud and obnoxious and INTRUSIVE and BLARING
people are idiots. Stan Lee and Jack Kirby shook hands on that fact in life and now after it. One day Paul will shake hands with John on that fact. (Beatles) PeopleThey pick their own fights in life. But first they need to get a f##kin life to fight for. Fanboy bulls##t.
I think its just his loud laughs during Stephens reading. But I agree he seems like a good dude and him and Stephen are obviously close friends.
I have read steven king since I was 8 yrs old my favorite author I am 46yrs old and still love him I own almost every book he has ever written
Yet after all this time, you still can't spell his name...?

I liked the phrase “ masturbation learner’s permit.” So true, isn’t it?
Oh man I loved the story! That was wonderful.
I love Stephen King. What a nice person. It would have been better to have him up there on his own but I suppose he's shy and could've used the moral support of that other guy.
just... just double what moral means for me real quick
@@oh...hi. Just came here to say you’re an a hole to leave this comment on a comment from 8 years ago. Toodles.
That was some story. Made even more enjoyable as read to the audience by mr. King himself. The last line was a real killer, caught a damn particle in my eye.
My very first novel was "Gone with the Wind" in sixth grade. Hey, my mom read Harlequin novels. But my second novel was called "The Long Walk" by Richard Bachman and I fell in love instantly. That instance changed my need for literary input. My first Stephen King book was "Pet Semetary," because I love animals and horror, but that turned me into a Stephen King librarian. Imagine my surprise when I realized this author was the same as my first horror novel. Yes, I was elated. Now I'm a writer!
You didn't read a novel until 6th grade?
To this day King is the still the best with Character. I've never read another author whose characters spring off the page like his. I just love his characters. I don't always love his plots, but he will always have vibrant, well written, interesting characters.
Only gotten back into reading heavily this year and among my favourites are all SKs work - absolutely brilliant author
Stephen King is brilliant. Afterlife is amazing.
Grape Avelon tee me more about the story
His book On Writing is so very supportive of the process.
Wow, that story is beautifully written. I thoroughly enjoyed it
Thank you so much for posting this. To hear his words in his voice was a great treat. Anyone else have reading rituals? Mine was to procure two snicker bars,a pk of Marlboro lights & a Mt Dew whenever i started a new book. I was in heaven. I broke my ritual while reading THE STAND. I would have the book laying open in my lap while driving to work so I could read a few lines at stop lights. I cried when I got the news about his accident. The person that told me wasn't sure if he survived. I wasn't upset because of the loss of his work. I feel he's a part of my life. Not many ppl in my life have brought as much joy. Sad, maybe but true. LONG LIVE THE KING.
I remember reading the story about Pittsburgh in high school. I lived in GA at the time, but I'm from Pitt. I was like OMG I ATE AT A RESTAURANT THAT STEPHEN KING ATE AT!!!!
Thanks UMass-Lowell for the upload. What a great chance to see (and hear) one of my favorite authors! Very glad you produced this video and shared it with the world. Thanks!
A lot of people have said the host is really annoying and yes, he is very annoying BUT Stephen King is saying things he wouldn't have said otherwise (with a non-annoying host). Stephen has a fantastic sense of humour, I'd doubt we would have seen much of that humour or happy jolly behaviour with a non-annoying host, In this interview you see him jumping out of his seat, giving high-fives to the host and laughing and even shouting, he is having a hell of a time in this interview and he has obviously known Andre Dubus (the host) for years. So although the host is really really annoying, it's kind of a good thing too.
Stephen quit drugs but he didn't quit people who do them. That host is a coked up douchebag - I was this close to not finishing the talk after the first few minutes LET'S CLAP LET'S CLAP LET'S CLAP YEAH GREAT GUY COME ON CLAP CLAP HAHAHAHA
Nah, he's annoying and King is awesome.
He could have done as a good of a job but with shorter questions and less shouting and interrupting.
@@parapoliticos52 i'm thinking he's enjoying the snow. The host touches his nose quite often and you can see him sniffle a lot while King is talking
@Cole yep. and he gave himself away during the q&a
Not only I love the short story, but I'm so happy when someone gets the Triangle Sweatshirt story right.
It's kinda adorable how flustered they get when they're asking their questions
Especially the little kid
I could listen to his stories all day! He once said he isn't a good talker but I have to disagree. He is so engaging and funny. The more I find out about him the more I like him. He is someone I would enjoy chatting with without feeling intimidated by his fame. He is just nice guy with a passion for writing. I hope I will be able to meet him one day.
I’m attempting to write my first book now, and I found listening to him completely inspiring. Thank you Stephen!
“On Writing”-I read it every few years. An awesome book.
For years I've read the Dubus name and had some respect for it. After watching both the UM Lowell events I have to say: Dubus is a complete and total ass. His interjections, stupid jokes, interruptions, and "yeUH!"s as he clapped over half the guest's commets were nearly enough to shut the thing down. Luckily, Mr. King is always worth listening to no matter how thick the idiots around him are. I'd love to see a "host" meet his maker King style in the master's next novel...just for giggles.
That guy loves the sound of his own voice.
i love to hear Stephen talk about his writing, but this interviewer is hands down the most tone deaf and disconnected pretender I have seen him speak with. And yet there is still so much to hear and appreciate.
Thanks for putting this up, great video, really enjoyed it!!
that was really kind of them to donate for scholarships!!
Gee, Stephen King is a nice guy so gracious and kind.
About 6 years old, mom left me home alone to go to a bonfire on the James River (it was literally just our front yard away, so no biggie really) The Shining was on TV that night. I've never fully recovered.
Wow, King's story was riveting. The guy has still got it.
I freaking love the Springsteen story. I can totally see Bruce, kinda relaxed, with an underlying smugness, reaching for that pen. Just struck shitless by the encounter.
I also wish he had talked about Lisey's Story. Loved that book,I have read it four times.
👍 for Stephen King and his exceptional writing and movies over decades.
Carrie, Kudjo, Misery, Thinner, and Maximum Overdrive to name some of my favorites.
I am born and raised in Maine and this man inspired my love for reading. I am so proud of this.
I adore Stephen King. And surprisingly his fans as well.
To have Stephen King read his latest work to you.......that does not happen twice in a lifetime. What an experience. :)
One day many many years ago, I turned on the book tv channel for the hell of it. I thought what a stupid boring channel nothing and no one on here for me. Just as I turned it on Stephen King took stage, and blew me away. It was the best hour program I've seen in a long time, funny, bold, warm, intellect, down to earth all in one. He was my greatest inspiration and best freind for that hour. Thanx to technologies I don't have to be there at the right time, I can do this anytime.
Man I love this guys books so much I don’t know if life would be worth it if I wasn’t reading his books.Everyone wants to say something to someone that they have watched, seen etc. but I am so thankful for S.K when he leaves this world no one will ever be like him the movies/books/ screenplays we are living with a living legend who’s books will keep him eternal.
My first book of his was The Dead Zone when I was 13, and I've been hooked ever since.
me too
***** I'll be 22 in August =) King inspired me too write as well.
My first one was IT. Boy did that scare me.
My first was the Shining, and I was 10.
Mine was Misery. I was a little older for reading King for the first time, or at least compared to everyone else I have met. I was 15, but I was still terrified. I adored it.
I really wanna watch stephen talk to people but that other dude is killing it so much. That forced hard laugh, the voice, everything feels so over pronounced and insecure.
King is actually really fucking funny. I'm reading The Stand right now, and there was a part in the beginning of Chapter 8 that made me laugh so hard I had to put the book down to get the giggles out. No, I don't think that laughter's forced.
Yeah, could've done without the forced clapping.... King can get his own laughs.
You’re absolutely right.
Genious! Thanks for uploading :) Was perfect material to listen to while painting!
Loved the story Mr. King. :)
Stephen King is my favorite author and I really enjoy his great sense of humor. Even in his darkest stories there’s usually a humorous line or two. 😎
Love the interviewer too, he's great, enthusiastic, and clearly familiar with King
5:22 The audio of their two mics picking up the cheers, and then the muffle of two bodies embracing was... accidental awesome sound design? I don't know, but that was audibly very cool!
True!
I love this man. I feel like I know him after spending so many hrs in his brain. I was a single,19yr old mother. I'd eat bologna sandwiches for weeks to save up to buy his books. I'v been a constant reader since 1985. I've turned many ppl on to his work which caused my little sister & I to get into many fights over who
the book belonged to. (Me!)
P.S. My daughter was born in 87. I remembered how he referred to CARRIE as his first baby. I named my daughter Carrie.
I seriously used to think I was too good to read King. Now he's my favorite.
I think a lot of people feel this way before they read anything he writes. He’s got that reputation of being a horror writer. But he’s also written things you would not consider horror. And his talent for writing characters is unsurpassed! I believe that’s what keeps people coming back.
Steve,
I hope you see this.
I had an English teacher in 1985 or 6.
She said you have to do the required reading, but you can pick any book.
I said "ANY book?"
She said yes.
So I checked out Thinner and Pet Sematary.
Own every book in hardback since then. Starting with It.
True. Love your voice.
I have read or heard everything he writes. I loved the sad stories and the spooky ones. But my faves are the sci-fi stories that he tells so well. These days with my eyesight not so good Audible books are here. But I still have my 1984 hard cover book of THE STAND. I love it when he reads. It is the time you get to hear King-isms!
Mr Mercedes and Carrie are two of my favorite King books.
It makes me sooo sad that a great writer is getting as old as I as I am. Love Stephen King!!
It will be a sad day when...Hope it’s not for a long time.
Stephen King, and his wife, have to be congratulated for donating his fee, and the auction items, toward scholarships, an incredibly important action to take on behalf of those without the means to attend the college, it's this kind of generosity and consideration that we need to see far more of from those with more wealth than they could spend in 10 lifetimes, after all "With great wealth comes great responsibility" (and for the pedants wealth is power)
Awww a socialist here to force the successful to comply. You'd be great in Antifa.
After listening to your story Mr. King I will finally be okay with the last line of Rowland's story.
This is my one thing that I chose/choose to hold onto this time around hoping to right a wrong of long ago. Stephen King, I aspire to tell my stories in a way that will send my message. One day, I hope you'll know my name.
Is your name Rebecca Deschain...?
Cujo is the only book that gave me a nightmare. I was only five pages in and fell asleep. I blamed Cujo.
The one that tears my heart out and makes my soul bleed is Duma Key. I read it at least once a year and I've gone through two hard covers and a paperback. There is no logic behind this but I'm in tears in the first chapter.
The man is legend.
This was magnificent. Thank you for posting this

What a great guy.

Mr. King is an inspiration to me. I'm currently trying to figure my own story out. Trying to pay attention to detail.
I've loved his stories via movies for years.... Sorry to say never read his books :( , I've never been a huge reader.... But recently I've gotten in to reading and after watching this , I have no doubt I will b reading his books :))
Start with The Shining and It.
Carrie's short, and he has plenty of short stories to get you started.
When you start dont get frustrated. There is a lot of information in some of the books and they take a while to get going but so worth it. Start with the short story compilations skeleton crew is one of my favorites, the story about the monkey toy really got me as a kid lol. Word processor of the gods was fantastic. There are mid size books like rose madder, the eyes of the dragon is amazing fantasy novel. Liseys story, from a buick 8 etc. good reading :)
The one quintessential statement he makes is in reference to writing a story for adults about kids.
I Love it. A strong language warning before Stephen King!
If you have read him you already know! Even his commentaries are laced with youthful fun!
Besides I grew up in an Irish household. If you weren't saying feck you were thinking it! 😋
