'A Tooth For An Eye' deconstructs images of maleness, power and leadership. Who are the people we trust as our leaders and why? What do we have to learn from those we consider inferior? In a sport setting where one would traditionally consider a group of men as powerful and in charge, an unexpected leader emerges. A child enters and allows the men to let go of their hierarchies, machismo and fear of intimacy, as they follow her into a dance. Their lack of expertise and vulnerability shines through as they perform the choreography. Amateurs and skilled dancers alike express joy and a sense of freedom; There is no prestige in their performance. The child is powerful, tough and sweet all at once, roaring "I'm telling you stories, trust me". There is no shame in her girliness, rather she possesses knowledge that the men lost a long time ago.
Music: 'A Tooth For An Eye' by The Knife taken from the album 'Shaking The Habitual'
Dir. Roxy Farhat & Kakan Hermansson

Editing: Roxy Farhat
Choreography: Sepidar Hosseini & Iwa Herdensjö

As an African musician I will tell you this. The dance could be from anywhere. The groove behind the song can be understood as 6/8 or 12/8 and it is very African. This groove can be found from Ethiopia all the way down to Cape Town with a million different names. Also the sound of the main keyboard is emulating a balafon or a kalimba. This is really good music. A good musician studies music from everywhere...
very interesting!
Africa is a mozaic not a country
A good musician only needs one source.
Shut up with your intelligent sounding words about a culture that you can't point to because you're not 28,000 years old.
"A good musician sticks his head or her head up hers or his own ass and the instrument does most of the work if you ever tried shoveling dirt for a living then you know what I mean.
Africa isn't as good as America. We got more Africans here than Americans there and I'm not complaining. You can eat us world. We are the melting pot and you guys dabble in who gives a shit. We are the best."
,dan'
@@Daxxon37 If the world wasn't globalised Karin maybe wouldn't have even explored this style. Maybe it would've taken another time span to get European music there. African style or influence doesn't mean African made.
Been listening to this song for 10 years and I just read the description for the first time. I’m sobbing
Hope you're okay dude
its so good, hope youre okay
8 years later, I'm still listening to A Tooth For An Eye
9 years later, you get the thumb up nr 27:-)
Why wouldn't you?!
With Shaking the Habitual, the Knife invented a new sound - an intoxifying, convention-crushing blend of afro-beat, techno, punk, industrial and pop. A black mirror to our times. Instead of milking their success they broke up. It's the album of the decade, and will prove to be far more influential to the future of alternative music than its numbers suggest.
You're 100% spot on. One of the most important records ever made. Totally new and never recreated.
Karin's singing is always great and otherworldly. I need this new Knife album in my life now.
Beautiful people dancing to beautiful music. May this song never end
This song speaks to my ancestors.. i can listen to this all day.. I'm a delivery driver & had this on repeat all day & still cant get tired of it..
I love how this song, from the musicality to the video to the lyrics to the way its sung, is an urgent plea and a protest.
I can't stop listening to this. One of the best Knife tracks ever.
i forgot how much i loved this song..
same
How... how can one forget such a thing?!?
When the bass zoooms in, and then the harmonies... whoa strong goosebumps
I don't know how many people know "The knife" well enough to know the singer is never the main character in her videos and sometimes she is not even there.
Stephen Robert I don't think she's in this one at all, yeah.
you take my breath away is the exception. karin is front and centre in that one.
She's in Pass this on
You also see her in Royksopp's What else is there?
maybe the video for fever ray. if i had a heart. but i wouldnt be surprised if the woman in that video wasn't Karin. shes wearing heavy facepaint so its hard to tell if it is her or not.
i can't stop watching this video. It helps that it's the more user friendly song out of the 2 released so far. The visuals fit so tightly with the music.
Her vocals at 1:16 are the most emotive thing i have heard in a long time...
this is an almost unspeakably beautiful work of modern art. thank you for this vision
Seriously one of my favorite songs ever, thank you Karin and Olof
This video felt so Swedish in the best way possible. It caught the essence of something in combination with this great song.
The percussion reminds me of Akira soundtrack
the clowns ah coming
Oh, shit, you're right. The world is in dire need of another such anime masterpiece.
@@Khyrid Look outside, it's sort of happening in real time now.
I don't know why but this song just...cuddles my zen thing, man.
I'm glad I didn't read the description first so I had a chance to think about why I had such a strong positive reaction to this video and song. That was a couple of years ago. The Knife is now my favourite band and I sincerely thank the person who turned me on to them.
2020 still rocking this song on repeat , thank you The Knife
Jah
Sorry
i'm trying to find other stuff like this but this is one of a kind
Liars - Mess on a Mission
th-cam.com/video/jbrNt-dMDsY/w-d-xo.html
Mi Ami - Pressure
th-cam.com/video/jxgsCYMnxos/w-d-xo.html
The Rapture - House of Jealous Lovers
th-cam.com/video/6HP04nfUi4g/w-d-xo.html
And several LCD Soundsystem tracks have a structure similar to this one
臥蠶眉 I've been on a Liars binge, thanks for that. I'm checking out the rest of your list now.
@@withanametocome Lol, sorry dude. None of that sounds like Karin Dreijer stuff, so I agree The Knife/Fever Ray is pretty damn unique and I love her for that. Liars song sounds more like The Faint than The Knife. The Rapture song sounds like The White Stripes and Sonic Youth thrown in a blender. Mi Ami sounds like again Sonic Youth, and someone else I can't quite put my finger on.
Peter Lim royksopp ?
It sort of defies convention as the song is written as 3/4 time rather than 4/4 - it's fucking genius
Notice the older gentleman never jumps. Just like in a real exercise class, all skill levels are welcome. It’s a nice touch im glad they decided to use an older actor even if he couldn’t do all the physical stuff in the routine.
I've watched this video at least a thousand times. Captivating.
Holy shit! This reminds me of some early David Byrne and Brian Eno stuff off My Life in the Bush of Ghosts or something. Its great to see new artists incorporating world music and technology in such creative ways.
I'm already looking forward to the day when i tell my children that this Band was one of my greatest musical influences in life, show them this, and they just go like "WTF".
Same. I'm warming up to tell them!
They also may just get it. Good music is timeless
Listen to this in headphones. The only way you could dislike this song is listening to it through your shitty laptop speakers
Or , you know, if electronic music isn't your thing. I like The Knife, but come on, let's be reasonable here
Also, music is made to be played on high-quality speakers, not headphones. IMO that's the best experience.
If they're good headphones, then they can be as good as or better than good speakers, at least for the experience of it. If you're just talking about simple earbuds, then maybe not.
***** Meh, I've yet to find a headphone that delivers better sound than my Monitor Audio Silver 8s
***** all I gots is an ihome radio lol (I liked the song tho). Recommendations for a noob?
First time I heard this: Yeah not feeling it
2nd time, nearly 3 years later. Oh nevermind this is awesome.
i loved it, i was surprised to see several comments saying they didn't liked full of fire... but the thing i love the most about the knife, this video, the other one & every one is that they really seem to do what they want, they really own their music, their art, by listening their music & watching their videos one realises that they do not care one bit about how many ppl might like it, they're just enjoying themselves & that my friends is what's most amazing about them
absolutely wonderful! love them! and I love that they moved on from Silent Shout and are putting out an altogether different feeling.
and as somebody pointed out, this is reminiscent of Fever Ray, which is great, because I don't think we got quite enough Fever Ray
god i love this. quite the most brilliant thing i've heard for years.
So many years have passed, and it still seems to me that these two songs have a lot in common! fever ray keep the streets empty , yaaa their Music ! Very good, shockingly innovative!
cest intemporel if you excuse my french
track = amazing, visuals = perfection. No need to please no body yet they accomplish a lot! cant wait for full album!
Woow es increíble!, Magnífico!. La forma en que canta Karin, El vídeo, La coreografía... The Knife lo mejor para este año
Ah, good to see Karin and Olof working as a duo again.
This is a masterpiece. Always come back, and it always touch me.
Read the description people
+thyrsson102 thank you, I understand better the music video now, now is waaay more interesting!
and btw if you didn't see it so far: it's a bunch of people dancing a choreo. watch really closely maybe you catch it
...ugh... now I wish I hadn't -.-
But their music is brilliant and that's what matters! :)
Wow Frank, you are all sweetness and light, aren't you? WTF
Actually, all you need do is watch the video carefully, with a discerning eye. I picked up everything mentioned in the description AND more after just a few watches, without having read it. But thanks for pointing that out. Ya'll missed a critical element. The completely ambiguous nature of the young one and her ancestral heritage, contrasted sharply against what appear to be very clearly defined ancestral heritage groups. Is she Asian? Is she European? Is she Latin? Is she altogether everything, like we all are?
I started my DJing career after listening to this song
The meaning of this is portrayed so beautifully, I'm in love.
The guy from the knife who is in all the videos gets super into it and is absolutely fantastic. I love it.
For THE KNIFE I give "like" always in advance.
Swedish music, swedish movies....... (generally scandinavian...........) RULEZ
I find this song so optimistic in a strange way...I love it!
It's 2021. This song doesn't age. Genius.
I'm confounded as to why so many people are criticizing the political views expressed in this song. It's not meant to be an in-depth thesis of how to solve the current politcal landscape, it's more of a fundamental declaration of principles! The primal feel of the instrumentation is purposefully matched with equally raw vocals and lyrics
I thought it was a quirky song about exercising
It's a declaration of principles that happen to be outright evil: "girls' souls are made from better soulstuff than boys' souls", basically, at the core of it.
@@Axacqk where did you even get that from
@Andrii Kliachkin Their own statements about the song and the video IIRC. Also female supremacist mysticism bullshit like "she possesses knowledge that the men lost a long time ago", right there in the blurb if you care to click SHOW MORE.
this is fucking magical
This album is underrated
"I like this, therefore it must be underrated"
It is honestly not, it is just not very popular
I lov the description
The knife you're awesome guys! Your musical compositions, the ideas you express though your songs and the original aesthetics you made everything from are amazing! I really admire you.
Sounds much better when you listen it while rides fast on a bycicle. Very powerful song. Thank you from Russia)
Its better riding a bull on the rodeo in a dusty town in México high in tequila and weed.
People are so pretty when they dance o.o
*****
You know that's contradictory to the themes that they are exploring in this album, right?
***** It's called "ignorant/privileged humor", no matter how you word it differently to justify and feel more confident about it.
***** Just because I don't like ignorance and call you out for it, that doesn't make me angry, lol. People are not angry or mad because they don't agree with you. You are not patient/calm/relaxed/chilled because you are ignorant either.
Dancing cheers me up generally, no matter who does it.
Xavierthamond lol privileged humor
The42LIFE .....He was being sarcastic
I love this, and the description deepens what is evident from the imagery. So good
This video just says so much! Love it, love the direction The Knife's taken!
Under this sun
Look what we have got
And those who haven't
Bad luck
We've been running 'round
Pushing the shopping cart
January 2012
Even in the suburbs of Rome
A brick in a castle a camp for those on the run
Dance as weapons
Release my eyes eyes eyes eyes tell me you
Some other kid is sucking on my thumb
Eyes eyes eyes eyes tell me you
Another kid needs to suck on my thumb
Under the sun
Picking piles of flowers for the flowers' pot
It's all that I've got
On my doorstep
A screaming hand
I'm telling you stories
Trust me
Rewrite history to suit our needs
Open my country
A tooth for an eye eyes eyes eyes tell me you
Some other kid is sucking on my thumb
Eyes eyes eyes eyes tell me you
Another kid needs to suck on my thumb

SOleil OR Yes and sounds amazing on vinyl.
Patrick Cunningham
Swedish, not British.
anyone know who she is?
Julie Davis she is 12 years old Swedish actress. :) I am the guy in yellow ;)
I can't stop watching this and obsessing over this actress. She is so amazingly beautiful, and she controls the entire video with just a wink and a smile.
Brilliant video from a brilliant band. The timing and choreography are perfect.
holy shit this song is so addicting.
She looks so powerful!!! gorgeous
wat?
this is my favourite. one of the best videos ive seen ain a long while too.
I finally got it on vinyl and i absolutely adore the album!
Roller Champions
I love when she blinks
I think you mean winks
wink
One of my favorite songs of this year.
i love the knife videos
I can't believe I found this song again.
How can this video only have 1.8 million views?
This is pure ART!
i love this! there's no one outthere that can compare to this two! the knife fan for life!
somehow makes me think of the Rite of Spring
That's a really good comparasion. Its like a pop version of that same rhythmic feeling.
beautiful song beautiful video
i'm in love with the track, the eery peter grabriel like vocals, the african kalimba tinged groove, and her face
Still can't get enough of this video!
the knife, perfeito como sempre!
Tá gostando de the knife ainda?
Had to thumb up for the description alone.
8 years later it’s still super duper hot
I'll be heavily impressed if I see anyone play this live. The studio version in great on its own, but to actually SEE someone playing that would be great!
"There is no shame in her girliness, rather she possesses knowledge that the men lost a long time ago." - what a fucking genius!
THIS IS SO GOOD not at 15 plays yet but SOON I WILL BE
Most beautiful song and most beautiful video ever. This is my all time favourite
voice is so ethereal and the beat is addicting, love it
Клип вроде уже закончился, а я слышу свист. Оказалось это мой чайник надрывается. Очень интерактивно получилось))
The instrumentation reminds me of the Civilization 2 soundtrack.
Hey i'm listening to it through studio speakers and i love it.
I didn't listen to The Knife today, and I felt like something was missing. Then I realized I didn't get my daily dose and now I feel complete.
I love them, especially in Fever Ray the voice is so unique.
Who's them and what's the connection to fever ray ?
@@doublehsword6508 They're talking about Karin Dreijer, the vocalist. Fever Ray is Karin's solo project. (They're non-binary.)
@@LoudPaul1 thank you
Adore this. Tribal, uplifting, askew goodness.
If I live to be a thousand years old, it will still haunt me that I never got to see The Knife live.
I've listened to this song 48 times in a row, according to listenonrepeat. It sounds better and better each time.
so Bjorkilicious!
this is the best video of the year so far
i love how much man love there is in this video!!!
roller champion brought me here
ya and im emberassed, that i did not found it already.. was missing something it seems. first time listening was a flash.
she winks at me like "lol I know you're tripping balls on DXM right now"
Replying just so you can reminisce about the time you tripped balls on DXM to The Knife
John Doe is a nice and thoughtful person. Be like John Doe.
Quite simply put; these guys never disappoint
YOU give me hope! Rock on and never give up being the unique person you are. Cheers and peace from Canada :)
Everyone from Sweden just looks so aesthetic...
well, it is a hand-picked music video too
How do you know they all from Sweden?
who else came from roller champions
My heart melted with that wink.
best album for a long intense lsd trip :D
thx for all great trips!
This has a strong early Peter Gabriel sound to it. Its uncanny!
+quixote22 Agreed!
Def. I assume you've heard their cover of "Mercy Street" by Peter Gabriel? If not, check it out!
I was just listening to San Jacinto, and there are so many similarities
