I always wish Miles Davis could hear this track. Miles always had phenomenal bands. To me, Snarky Puppy carries Jazz to that next level. Cory's solo will be studied for years!

This is the album. They flew to Amsterdam(?) and immediately started writing. Drummer Sput couldn't make it, so Lennard was sent mp3s of the music without drums, which he learned on the flight over. He arrived two hours before the first recording session. They do up to four takes of each song with the best making the album. Corey Henry on the synth solo. 6 time Grammy winner Shawn Martin taking off his headphones during it. The vocoder is for the song Sleeper. The strings appear on two or three tracks. The entire album is fire with this as the closer. There is a 38 minute doc on the making of the album and associated 12 day/12 show European tour associated with this trip. Their first Eutopean tour. This song is written by band leader, bassist Michael League. Corey is a child prodigy. Look up him playing organ as a child.

It's Utrecht where they recorded this. But yeah, technically they flew to Amsterdam because Utrecht doesn't have an airport. ;)

It's always a pleasure to see Cory make some jaws drop with this insane solo. You might wanna try "Binky" or "Trinity" for your next reactions on Snarky Puppy.

The piano player in this tune, and a lot of Snarky's tunes, is Bill Laurance, the dude in the pink shirt with his back to the electric piano player that starts the tune, Justin Stanton. You can see him a bit better at 7:00. I say "in this tune" because they use a billion keyboards, between electric pianos, grand piano, clavinet, organ and several synths, and pretty much every tune has a different combination of them.
Since recording this album, Cory Henry has left the band to focus on his solo band, Cory Henry and the Funk Apostles, and Bobby Sparks returned after almost a decade. When Cory was in the band, he'd usually play synths, organ and electric piano.
In the current configuration, you'll usually see Justin Stanton on the electric piano, Bill Laurance on the electric or grand piano, Shaun Martin on the organ or the Moog + talkbox combo and Bobby Sparks on the organ or clavinet, with all of them playing different synths in different tunes.
However, they'll often break the usual and you'll see other configurations like Shaun on the electric or grand piano, Bill on the clavinet or even Justin on the trumpet, because they're quite simply built different.

This was recorded in Europe. The guy in the black shirt to the left of Larnell is the owner of the studio. They got there with songs unfinished and no drummer. Larnell arrived about two hours before they began recording. If I heard correctly, they announce a new recording on one of their social media accounts and you can pay something like $200 to sit in. Um....no brainer...

The Curtain for sure. It is the opening piece to a suite written and arranged by Michael League called SYLVA. Performed by SP and the Metropole Orkest. Stunning piece of music.

I think you're the only reactor so far to pick up on Shaun Martin's "Goddamm!!" at the end there. Kudos. To see Shaun shine on the voicebox do react to Sleeper from the same session. It's also good live but I think this album/session is it's first outing. What Cory Henry has for keyboard chops, Shaun matches with feel on the voicebox/vocoder.

Thank you so much! Very few people notice Bill Laurence matching Larnell on the piano. I, too, wish they had given him a little camera love. That's a hard part to play without losing focus. If you ever watch this again, he's the one in the peachy-orange shirt who sits down right before they start Cory's solo.

This IS the studio version, so to compare solos, check out some live stuff. Cory Henry plays the solo totally different each time I've heard this song. He is currently my favorite keyboardist of all time. Love that moment that your mouth froze open, as Cory played fast riffs with both hands playing the same thing.

The reason that one keyboard player shakes his head and walks away is because he (and his vocoder) are featured on another track in this album (“Sleeper”), which, apparently, was recorded before this track. Shawn thought he had the hottest track in the album … until Corey played this solo like a man possessed and Shawn’s subsequent reaction was his realization his solo was going to place a distant second behind this one.
As far as other SP tracks, my recommendations would be
    “Don’t You Know”[featuring Jacob Collier] …
or “Something”[feat. Lalah Hathaway], the latter being SP’s 1st grammy.
