Fun fact: the scene where Buddy arrives in New York City was semi improvised, since there was no set and no other actors (aside from the people with flyers and coffee shop) and they just filmed Will Ferrell running around in character, meaning the guy he mistook as Santa was legitimately just some old dude in red they found who had no clue he was being filmed or who Will was

When they were first pitching this movie years ago, they were originally going to cast Jim Carrey as Buddy. Now I love Jim Carrey, but I don't think the movie would have been half as good without Will Ferrell's childlike glee. He plays oblivious innocent so well and it's very endearing.
Now imagine will Ferrell as the grinch 🤣
Elf would have been a much easier movie to film. I agree that will ferrell suits this part better though.

Fun fact: the way they filmed some of the scenes was perspective filming, where they had Buddy (Will Ferrell) stand closer to the camera than the characters so that he had bigger proportions than the others. Obviously they made sure to edit and refine it so that it looked more clean.
Ming Ming, the elf floor manager who tells Buddy he isn’t “a cotton headed ninny-muggins”, is played by Peter Billingsley who mostly is a producer but most famously played Ralphie in a Christmas Story.
Thanks for that bit of trivia....now to rewatch the scene with that new knowledge.
He's also in The first Ironman movie and in Spider-Man Far From Home.

Buddy and Jovie named their daughter after Buddy's mother. You can see Susie written on her hat at the end.
Fun Fact: The stop motion animals and elf costumes were meant to be a huge tribute to Rankin Bass, who did the classic Christmas animations during the 60s and 70s, but they was so much similarly the entire movie was almost shut down. Buddy almost wore a blue costume, instead of green. 😱
I love this entire film, but my favourite part is always seeing James Caan almost break character when Buddy does the magic trick with the cotton ball at the doctors (lil smirk) and him hide his laugh when Buddy gets pricked it’s hard to notice but it’s clear he found it funny 😂
The stop motion and outdoor north pole shots are a nod to the 1960s Ruldolph special you should absolutely react to.
The actor who plays Buddy’s dad is Sonny from The Godfather and Paul from Stephen King’s Misery - no wonder he’s so grumpy.
Buddy's elf outfit is almost identical to the outfit Herbie and the head elf wear in Rudolph.
The best way to spread christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear!
I hope they understood that it was her biggest insecurity and established fear so her doing it means a lot cause its been established in the script and it's through her singing how she and buddy really connected albeit after an awkward shower scene...that plus the holdiays led her to ask him what he was doing so they had dialogue... women love when men show interest...it was earnest and naive not on purpose that he was there..she realized he was drawn in by her voice not to look at her body...her singing voice she is insecure about others hearing but loves to do anyways when she's alone in the shower
Zoey Deschanel doesn't just have a good voice, she has a FANTASTIC voice.

I watched this before I went to work today. It’s one of my favourites. Mary Steenburgen is so great, love her in everything.
She is really great, I love that she and Will Ferrell went on to play mother and son in Step Brothers after playing stepmother and stepson in Elf.
My grandpa was really uncomfortable/in pain etc in the few years up until he passed. One thing that always made him laugh was comedy christmas movies. The home alone hijinx. And specifically in this movie, the jack in the box scene and the racoon hug scene always cracked him up. I love these movies for giving us those moments with my grandpa.

I always liked the subtle nod to the famous bigfoot film when he’s walking in the park.
I'm glad to see someone else caught that reference! That moment always makes me laugh, it's such an obvious duplication of that Patterson Bigfoot footage.
The Gimbles manager was actually supposed to be played by Wanda Sykes and she had to drop out , if you look at his name tag you’ll see the name Wanda on there. Faizon Love who played him as a shout out to Wanda who he knew from being a stand up comic himself had the idea to keep the name tag.
New York can be both super cold businessman persons and spontaneous wacky good hearted people so you can believe that New Yorkers would come together and start singing a christmas song, especially if it was headed by Zooey Deschanel. It's the perfect place for Buddy to drop in unexpectedly to create hijinx situations.
The fact Buddy came from the North Pole and got all the way to New York without getting lost is impressive like did Santa give him a Map or a compass or something?
This is a very sweet and endearing movie and Will Ferrell's child like enthusiasm was perfect.

The news clip about a strange man dressed as an elf in Central Park is a shout out to the famous Bigfoot clip where he looks over his shoulder like that.

My family and I just watched this for the millionth time the other day on Christmas Eve. It never gets old. Fills you with not only holiday cheer but joy in general. An absolute classic.

the part with the jack in the box the director had it rigged up to where it went off when he pushed a button so will had no idea when it would go off so his jump sxcares are 100% real

Great reaction guys. It has great Christmas vibes although it's not my favourite...but it was a lot of fun seeing you both have a good time with this. I love James Caan too and he's a really great well rounded actor who can do both drama and comedy. The other comedy film I loved him in was 'Mickey Blue Eyes' with Hugh Grant, also fun :)
I honestly forgot that I saw this in theaters until earlier this month lol. It feels so long ago. Thinking about James Caan in The Godfather vs this movie really is hilarious. 😅 Buddy would have a much more rude awakening if Sonny was his dad.

I think the snowman at the start is an homage to Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, because there was a very similar character that was the narrator in it.
Also, RIP Ed Asner (Santa) and Carl in Up.
It's a little raunchy and rated R, but Bad Santa is a good watch and has a good character arc

this was my grandma's favorite christmas movie. my soon to be 11 yr old daughter loves this movie and she has a shirt with buddy on it and has a saying on it i can't remember what it says. i love this movie and Christmas vacation and Grinch with Jim Carrey
Fun fact: This movie didn't have a very high budget, so all those New Yorkers weren't extras, but real people! They really had Will Ferrel go around dressed like that, go up to random people, and do all that in public. So everyone's reactions are completely real!

I used to watch this movie every year as a kid/teenager I loved it, it must have watched it ever year for 5 years in a row and I never got sick of it, that and the simpsons Christmas specials or even the pilot episode of the simpsons which is arguably a Christmas special itself

There is a Netflix series called how the movies were made. There are 3 seasons. It has Elf, Die Hard, etc. If Netflix give you permission, maybe you can react to the series. I love this series and it is education. You can do the ones you have watched only if wanted.
I remember when this movie first came out, I didn't bother going to see it in the theaters because the ads made it look really stupid. But it's actually a darn good Christmas movie! I think the best one made in recent years.

Can you please react to "Arthur Christmas" ? ( animated movie) it is one of my favourite slightly underrated Christmas movies and it is a clever take on the characters. (not as different of a take as in "Rise of the Guardians" , but still pretty cool and the characters crack me up just like with this movie (Elf).
