Where were you when you first watched this movie?
At home. I watched it on Family channel around 10 maybe. Loved it and the sequels.
It played on Disney Channel all the time during Halloween Time. So I remember watching it in my living room when I was really little. The whole series was a part of my childhood
@@cayanne3420 it’s the same for me too, where I watched this movie.
@@cayanne3420 Same. I was about to turn 6 when the first one came out so this one and the second one were my childhood. Still watch them every year.
I watch it the night it premiered on Disney Channel in 1998. I would've been 12, almost 13.
You should definitely watch the sequels, they're all cozy Halloween movies and keep the same actors until the last one where Marnie is changed to Sara Paxton.
@Sam McClung agreed
Especially seeing as who the actress playing marnie ended up married to, you have to watch the sequel.
Yes!!!! I love the sequels too I think the last one isn't really a favorite of mine but it's still a good watch 😊👍
@@HollywoodandWine101 omg! I didn’t realize! 😆 That is too ironic!
I won't even mess with the last one because I get that they change actors but they didn't even ask Kimberly they just threw in this poor girl because she had a better look to them, she was more current, and I feel terrible for her she caught so much crap for it when really she just took a job.
This movie practically *formed* my personality. "I can show you all my books, and I have all the Frankenstein movies on video...." Add old Hollywood royalty Debbie Reynolds as a witchy grandma?
My fate was sealed.
The grandmother is played by Debbie Reynolds, the mother of Carrie Fisher, who played Princess Leia in Star Wars.
And she died less than 24 hours after Carrie's death, rest in peace both mother and daughter
@@marcusfridh8489 I read Carrie's memoir, and she said that growing up, it felt like every time she did something noteworthy, her mother would somehow outdo her and steal all the attention. If Carrie got a big supporting role in a movie or play, Debbie would get the lead in something else. If Carrie got a magazine interview, Debbie made a talk show appearance. So, when Carrie died and Debbie passed soon after, I had to shake my head in dark amusement. It seems even in death, Deb found a way to upstage Carrie.
“Fairy godmother for Halloween?”
No, that’d be Scary Godmother.
So fun fact. The earliest Jack’O’lanterns were made from turnips. Pumpkins were adopted, when the Irish got to America and realized that not only were pumpkins east to get but they were also much easier to carve due to being hollow.
The movie was filmed at St Helens, Oregon. The town has a Halloween festival every October. They even decorated the town into Halloweentown one year and the cast showed up for the celebration.
Went there last weekend, it was a lot of fun. I actually lived in St. Helens when they filmed this movie so it has a special place in my heart.
Fun fact, jack-o-lanterns where originally made from turnips. They where only switched to pumpkins in the “new world” because they are easier to carve. To idea is the light protects you from evil forces. The original myth is Irish about Stingy Jack. Jack only had a hollowed out turnip lantern to see with. So the face of the Jack-o-lantern is supposed to be jacks face.
As someone who was a kid when this came out (8 at the time), I absolutely adored this. I waited impatiently for Halloween every year on Disney just for this movie. Debbie Reynolds was amazing as the grandma, and Kimberly J. Brown was a great Marnie. It was fun to see you enjoying it, even though it IS obviously a made-for-TV movie aimed at kids. The one quote from this film that has stuck with me my whole life: "Being normal is vastly overrated."
Also, fun fact about Jack O''Lanterns: originally, in Ireland, they carved turnips and stuck candles in them. The pumpkin was only used after they immigrated to the US and they saw how much more available it was, and how much easier to carve.
I used to watch this movie every single day for months. From October to February, I was obsessed. It's not Halloween for me until I watch Halloweentown (and also Casper Meets Wendy). I watched it so much that I knew it word for word, scene by scene, and had dreams about it. Now as an adult (I'm 22), my mom always tells me when Halloweentown is on TV. She used to be annoyed when I'd watch all the movies over and over, but now it has so much nostalgia for her too. All of the Halloweentown movies are great, I'd definitely recommend you guys check out the sequels!
Fun fact: Grandma is portrayed by Debbie Reynolds, who was Carrie Fischer's (Princess Leia's) mother in real life! If you guys have ever seen Singin' in the Rain, Kathy Selden is a young Debbie!
I’m so glad I’m not the only one who loves Casper Meets Wendy! ❤
I love Casper Meets Wendy, that is my childhood right there
YES, CAN WE ALL BE FRIENDS?!
@@16taysia yes! 😍🥰🥹
Casper meets Wendy? Is that the Hillary Duff one? I always watched the one with Wednesday Addams, which I think was the original? Not sure.
What James said about how she wanted to socialise the kids differently but that it would essentially lead to the same thing by keeping them locked up was so absolutely dead on! Really well put as well. That was very insightful 😊
The third Halloweentown is one of my favourites, should definitely check it out. I love how camp these movies are, the bright colours and makeup design are so reminisce of vintage Halloween styles literally exactly like the book the grandma has. I think the first time I watched this movie I was 10 or something, and it was on tv; running to the kitchen during commercial breaks to get a snack - so nostalgic.
Always a pleasure to see those that appreciate the sequels
Personally, the third movie (Halloweentown High for anyone reading this who doesn't already know) is my least favorite. Though, don't get me wrong, I still thoroughly enjoy it, I just like the others better. My personal favorite is the second movie.
This is one of my favorite Disney Halloween movies and the others are really good too you guys should watch the others for sure! Also Twitches that’s another classic you guys would like! Love your guys reactions!!
I love Twitches!!
Glad you enjoyed this classic Halloween DCOM! Yes, I highly do recommend the sequels! And yes I would love to see your reaction to The Addams Family Values. And if you wish to see any more Halloween DCOMs these are the ones I highly recommend: Twitches 1-2, Phantom of the Megaplex, Don’t Look Under the Bed, Mom’s Got A Date With A Vampire, and The Scream Team.
👩🏻🧑🏻🦱👧🏻👩🏻🦰🧙🏻♀️🐺👻🧛🏻♀️😈🪄🎃
I love that as soon as the first man appeared on screen NTB just goes yep that’s the bad guy 😂🤣 every time he gets it haha
😂😂😂it’s great
Man this movie is a blast from the past it always hits me with a case of nostalgia whenever I hear the movie's theme.
I’m so glad you all enjoyed this movie! It’s definitely a nostalgia thing for me. If you’re into spooky Disney Halloween movies, Don’t Look Under The Bed straight up traumatized me when I was little. Now I can watch it and enjoy it for the message it was sending
Don't look under the bed is awesome lol scared me to death
I was 14 when this movie came out and a big Halloween person so, naturally, this movie became a quick and hard obsession. I wish I had a brightly colored brown with 1950 retro-futuristic designs on it. And I loved Debbie Reynolds' dress and wanted it so bad. (My love of eccentric old lady fashion started early I guess LOL) And I was secretly on Team Chocolate Bar (LMAOF!) because he reminded me of The Grand Wizard on the movie The Worst Witch, played by Tim Curry who EVERYONE had (still has?) a crush on,
So fun to see people watch this blind for the first time!! This movie really endeared me to Debbie Reynolds as a kid, she was the perfect Grandma Aggie!!
Watching this as an adult I really appreciate how much effort went into all the designs and makeup and the town and concepts, so many fun clever little details
Long Chaney Jr played the wolfman in the 1941 movie "the wolfman" his father was in the 1923 version of the hunchback of notredam and was in the phantom of the opera movie.
I get what nine tailed means by jack o lanterns being kinda comforting. I absolutely love the holidays, oct-dec is just a comforting period I think because of so many cultures celebrating and the decorations and different traditions bringing everyone together. For me jack o lanterns are just a part of the festivities that help remind me of how enjoyable it all is. Plus tons of classic movies on tv, it's just the best. (With the bonus of me loving fall weather) The end of the year is great lol
I think it's also comforting because of the candlelight that comes from them. The softness of candlelight has been found to have a calming effect on our brains, which is why even fake candles nowadays have a flickering effect.
James: “Is this fairy godmother, but for Halloween?”
Me: “No, that’s Scary Godmother.”
Well played lmao!!
@@whitenoisereacts I love Halloween and Christmas
Jack o lanterns actually used to be turnips. Pumpkins didn’t start being used until people came to the New World, where Pumpkins could be found.
I remember how surprised I was when I realized that the mom was April O’Neil from the TMNT movies.💜
I really wished they had dove into Marnie being jealousy about magic coming so easily to Sophie not only to further emphasize how the more time passes without using magic the more dormant it becomes and how Marnie was robbed time by her mother, but because I think having a protagonist who isn't immediately goated is interesting. Additionally, as she kept practicing and improving, the pay off at the end would've been more rewarding. But don't get me wrong, I love these movies
I always thought of Marnie's powers as being asleep and less potent since they would vanish soon due to her age, plus she hasn't used them (unconsciously) for a long time.
Like the older she got, the better she could control her emotions, so no magical outbursts.
Sophie on the other hand is so much younger than Marnie and her powers manifested later and therefore are still more active and it's easier for her in the first movie.
9 said it perfectly, its like a feel good Christmas movie but for Halloween 😂
I'd love a dark fantasy series based on the world of Halloweentown.
Yooooo, I grew up watching this movie every single year, it's so iconic! Probably made me love Halloween even more than I already did, lmao. The sequels are actually pretty good and worth the watch (though I haven't seen the last one in so many years, I don't remember a ton of it).
I definitely recommend the sequels. Twitches (and Twitches Too), Under Wraps (the original), Don’t Look Under the Bed, and Can of Worms are worth a watch as well.
RIP Debbie Reynolds and her daughter Carrie Fisher 🙏❤️🙂
I’m actually so stoked for this reaction! I love Halloween 🎃
Being normal is vastly overrated…I just LOVE THIS QUOTE SO MUCH 😊❤
I love the Halloweentown movies so much, they're so sweet and cozy :)
I love all the HalloweenTown movies, they are light & fun when you don’t feel like watching something scary.
I love all the Halloween town movies I have them all they’re so iconic
I'm 35 yrs old and watched this for the first time when my 11 yr old daughter heard about it and wanted to watch it i think she was 7 or 8 yrs old. We have the first and second on dvd.
The anticipation for this movie every year when I was a kid was so real. Now I still watch it during spooky season but nothing beats the October nights during those years between this and “Don’t Look Under the Bed” we covered warm family friendly Halloween to kinda creepy but fun Halloween all on Disney Channel.
That’s Debbie Reynolds - mother of Princess Leia!
❤️
The legend!!!
Rest in Peace
@@whitenoisereactsI wonder if they ever saw the other three movie
I see all four movies and hocus pocus every year
Aww the nostalgia!! I remember first watching this movie on disney channel eons ago lol and always looking forward to it when they used to air it during halloween time
Didn't expect you guys to react to a DCOM (Disney Channel Original Movie). Definitely check out Halloweentown 2, it's more darker and grim.
@5:42 Marnie is referring to the film The Wolf Man (1941), one of the famous Universal Classic Monster films, with this reference, where Lon Chaney's character became a werewolf and sees a pentagram on the palm of his next victim.
AHHHHHHHHH MY CHILDHOOOOOD 🎉 this was my first Debbie reynolds’ film. She’s Carrie fisher’s (Princess Leia) mom and a huge film star as well :)
My mom was so sick of this movie because I made her watch it with me over and over every single year lol. It was such a childhood classic with all of the cheesy, corny vibes of a Disney Channel made-for-TV movie. It's probably one of the most nostalgic movies from that era for me. RIP Debbie Reynolds. She really was a grandma to so many. Much like how most kids who read Harry Potter wished that Hagrid would whisk them off to Hogwarts, I think a lot of kids wished Grandma Aggie would take them to Halloweentown. I don't know how it holds up to a first time watcher as an adult who doesn't have the nostalgia, but it's such a comfort movie despite it being clearly for kids. Glad you guys gave it a shot. I'd definitely love to see a reaction of part 2.
My younger sister was obsessed with this film as a kid, while I was going through that too old and too cool to like a "kids" film like this, phase. She watched it so often that I was sick of the sight of it. Extremely ironic considering the fact I am the one that is still a kid at heart today and Halloween is my absolutely favourite time of year. And I have to say watching you guys react to this is bringing back some hard nostalgia feelings! Now I'll need to get my sister to watch your reaction too! 😁
This movie came out 2 years before I was born but found it around 2007 & watched it with my little sister & grandma. Watch it every year around Halloween time to this day.
Yay, my favourite duo!
Never seen this movie before. Looking forward to it!
So happy you decided to react to these fun Halloween movies, which really a re for all ages. I do hope you continue them with Halloweentown 2 Kalabars Revenge, and Halloweentown High. And there is a 4th movie Return to Halloweentown but they changed the main actress who played Marnie and some of the main cast was barely there at all and, though the movie was fun, it wasn’t at all the same as the original 3 films.
I'm so glad you guys reacted to this! I LOVE Halloweentown, it's a childhood favorite of mine, and I still watch it every Halloween season. I really do hope you guys watch the other Halloweentowns, I personally think they're all good.
I would LOVE to see you guys react to Merlin on Netflix, it is a series with 5 seasons 13 episodes each. IT IS AMAZING.
Some have already recommended Singin' in the Rain also starring Debbie Reynolds and I am here to upvote that.
I agree. Is one of my top 10 favourite movies of all time. A masterpiece
This was the Disney Channel Original movie that I always looked forward to growing up for pretty much all the reasons you said at the end. It's not perfect but it's so comfy that I can't think of a Halloween without it.
That said if you want another DCOM for the season I would suggest Don't Look Under the Bed if you haven't seen it. It, like Halloweentown, had a big impact on me as a kid.
Grandma's suitcase is a Bag of Holding. XD
And as much as I love the Grandma, she totally undermined the moms specific wishes, of course when they are old enough which is now, they should know their history or would find it out on their own, obviously as they followed their Grandma. It's not up to the Grandma how she chooses to raise her kids. Good that she changed her mind at the end.
Remember watching this on Disney channel during Halloween time or whenever they show it
Funny thing; while the grandmother isn't- there IS a fairy godmother for halloween... Scary Godmother- another cheesy halloween classic. The look of the graphics has aged for sure but it's still a fun halloween special.
Definitely watch the next two! Such fun Halloween movies. :)
Forgot how much I love and enjoy watching this movie. Don’t even remember the first time I saw it. I think it was when Disney+ came out but I think that was when I watched the sequels for the first time. So idk anyways would love to see you guys react to the other Halloweentown movies. Love the videos! You both do an amazing job!
It’s weird I never noticed as a kid but now every time I hear Luke talk all I see in my head is Hey Arnold.
Halloween town is the best movie to see with your family and there sequels. It very kid friendly, unfortunately I was a teen when these came out. But I love Halloween but, not the super scary stuff.👻🎃
R.I.P DEBBIE REYNOLDS
Talk about a childhood movie 😂 I recall enjoying Halloween town high the most out of these.
Then the Casper movies have the same fun vibe ❤
"Being normal is vastly overrated."
Best line
Just amazing how it’s a cult classic movie to see now. Remember it aired when I was 14 in 98 and loved every minute of it wish that place was real since love Halloween.
What do you think of a parent denying their children something inherent, that they're born with? I feel like the children have a right to know so they can choose. With magic, that can be an interesting story premise: A young character find out that they have inherent power and that their parents tried to take it from them, so that breeds resentment, and the child runs away to learn from others...
I loooooved these movies as a kid - they would play the whole series every year on family channel leading up to Halloween 😍
Speaking of ABSOLUTELY ICONIC I’m hoping you guys haven’t forgotten about the live action 101 Dalmatians w/Glenn Close! 🙈😅 a Hayley/Stella reaction would be cool but think most people would prefer you guys since you reacted to the original animation.
Yeah that would be cool!!
😁
This movie is on my have to watch for every October list. Also another Disney Channel classic is Don't Look Under The Bed. I wish they still had Are You Afraid Of The Dark on, the original 90's version not the ones they have out now.
It was Star Wars that cemented Carrie fisher as a legend for me. It was halloweentown that cemented Debbie Reynolds as a legend for me.
Yo! What a neat surprise :) I used to watch this every Halloween along with the sequel. Ahhh childhood. The second one's great you guys should definitely watch it, along with the third. The fourth one I never watched because they replaced Marnie for no reason at all, and on principle I just couldn't support a film that would do that to the lead actress. Plus the movie itself looked like ass 😂😂
fun tidbit - people first carved faces into turnips not pumpkins! which i think would be abjectly more horrifying to see sitting on someones doorstep.
I was about to turn 6 when this came out and I've watched it every year since lol. It's my favorite non-horror movie to watch during Halloween season. The second movie is just as good but it kinda goes downhill after that in my opinion. So I'd recommend at least watching that one. Third one is decent though. Debbie Reynolds will always be Aggie to me. 🎃🖤
R.I.P. Debbie Reynolds.
I think my favourite sequel is Halloweentown high, but return to Halloweentown is really interesting too
Ok cool!!!
THIS IS MY CHILDHOOD MOVIE OMG !!
Yesss please do the sequels 👌🏻 LOVE Halloweentown High ❤ definitely watched these as a kid 👏🏻 they are great and always bring a warm feeling
Love Debbie Reynolds who played the Grandmother
ahhhh my movie love this trilogy sm especially as a kid i used to watch this and nightmare before christmas basically all the time
PLEASE watch the next one too, its the best one 100% So freaking good
One of my favorite family friendly Halloween movies is Casper meets Wendy, if you guys haven't seen it I'd recommend it!
This movie series is so close to my childhood. I'd watch the series every October up until about eight years ago. First one is classic, second one is probably the best, third I was never too into, and the fourth was weird with the recasting.
The fist jack o lanterns were turnips….
I’ve watched these since I was a preteen. I’m about the same age as the main actress.
Kalabar's motive had nothing to do with the mom. As you already know, Halloweentown is a separate dimension.
All the ghouls, monsters, witches and wizards once lived in the human world. But at some point, the humans became aware of their existence and began to hunt them down, destroying their kind one by one.
For their safety, they traveled to a separate dimension, which they built as Halloweentown for their safety and live in peace.
Kalabar despised the humans for what they did and only saw their safety as banishment from the human world and wanted revenge on the humans, using his spells to turn everyone in Halloweentown evil to conquer the human world and make humans live in fear of them.
And of course, he began to hate the mother as well for marrying a human. His whole motive is revenge and conquering the world.
I've been rewatching these movies on the Disney channel and now Disney Plus since I was SUPER little every single Halloween, and I still LOVE these movies!! I'm really happy you guys liked it too!! I was probably 10 or 11 the first time I saw these movies on Disney channel. Since we weren't one of the "cool" families, and we didn't have cable until I was in 4th or 5th grade. (LMAO!!!)
Fun Fact: The first Jack-O-Lanterns were actually made from turnips and potatoes.
I love Halloweentown. My fave chracter was always Benny the taxi driving skeleton. I liked that he had a typical NY/Brooklyn accent
Please watch the entire Halloweentown series!
Halloweentown 2 is the scariest of them all
Halloweentown High is my favorite
On a side note since you mentioned it, definitely do Addams Family Values, it's my favorite of the two. Also would love to see you continue with the Halloween town movies.
Jack o lanterns actually started as a pagan tradition where people would carve weird/mean looking faces into (mainly) turnips to ward off evil spirits! During Samhain (October 31st) it’s believed that the veil between the spirit realm and the physical realm is thinnest so Jack o lanterns and other things are put out as extra protection against the evil/mischievous spirits roaming around
The second one is the best one. The first one has no structure, the last one is the worst, and all 4 have an endless supply of halloween kitsch.
I just remember seeing this on Disney Channel in Jr. High and thinking it was pretty decent for a TV movie. However the next 2 movies didn't show up til I was in or almost out of high school and with the third film being set in a High school setting I was kinda checked out at that point. I also felt the budgets got smaller and smaller. I will make note that Mary Lambert who directed the original Pet Semetary('89) directed the sequel. Which was cool. She's directed alot of TV and direct-to-video films.
Addams Family Values next pls!
_Halloweentown_ is positively iconic, especially as a DCOM. They just don't make 'em like this anymore, and the second film is just as golden.
So true, I sure miss dcom . They don’t make them like that anymore
Low-key it's better than hocus-pocus/abracadabra as it's called in Latin America
Please watch Disney’s The Haunted Mansion!!
I was in Spokane, if that was your question but also at my house. I was young like maybe in the tween years in I remember correctly. I also remember watching the other halloweentown movies too
Which others?
@@whitenoisereacts halloweentown 2,3 and 4 and if I remember correctly there is a 5th one about college...might need to look it up later. Like I said it's been so long since I last saw those movies
@@whitenoisereacts The series goes Halloweentown,
HT 2: Kalabar's Revenge. Halloweentown High, and the last one is Return to Halloweentown with a new Marnie. There is a 5th one but it seems disliked by the Internet.
You definitely should watch all of them! I loved these movies growing up. I still watch them every Halloween 🎃
"Fairy godmother but for Halloween" no but there is a Halloween movie call Scary Godmother! Very good highly recommend
One of our family favorites! You should watch the rest!
A person I’ve done a few shows with, his sister did costumes for Broadway and way back in the 60s-70s his sister did a show with Debbie Reynolds. They went out for drinks together and went back to Debbie’s house for drinks. Turns out it was also a young Carrie fishers sweet 16. So Someone Ive acted with met both Debbie Reynolds and Carrie fisher.
Always love your reactions and this one was no exception 😊 thanks for all of your hard work and for being your entertaining lovely selves.
Finally someone reacting to halloweentown. I do a Halloweentown marathon ever year in October. I've already done it, I might do it again
I get the struggle of finding tupperware lids
