What sells this movie and keeps it from becoming "not bad but forgettable" is Will Ferrell's complete exuberance and joy. "SANTA!!! I know him." He sucks you into the child he still is.
A couple of years ago, for my wife's 50th birthday, I surprised her by renting a theater for all of our family and we watched this. It's our favorite Christmas movie.

The scene where Buddy jumps onto the tree and the whole thing falls over has a special place in the heart of all cat people. ;-)
The Elf supervisor who asks another elf to cover for Buddy is played by the same actor who played Ralphie in A Christmas Story named Peter Billingsly.

When buddy gets to New York and is walking around, none of the other people walking around were actors or extras. They were just people walking down the street, even the guy dressed in red that buddy thought was santa.
The actress you couldn't think of playing Buddy's girlfriend/future baby elf mama is Zoey Deshenel but with blonde hair. It's usually black hair. She was also the star of the TV show New Girl.
I can think of only 2 people who could have played Buddy: Will Ferrell, and the late Robin Williams. Watching Will Ferrell act in his free child state is like watching a miracle.

Buddy‘s date with Jovy is truly one of the cutest in any movie it’s perfect how wholesome it is just hanging out together and ofc sharing not only a cup of coffee but THE WORLD’S BEST CUP OF COFFEE
So Trixy can accept that there's a Santa, who lives at the North Pole with elves making toys, but that this magical Santa might have been able to find out who Buddy's biological parents are...that part she wonders about! lol :)

Great reaction! I'm so happy you got to see this movie. It's in my top five Christmas movies. When it was released, I went with a friend to see this in the theater. She did NOT want to see it. By the end of the movie, the entire theater was singing, and so was she. I love it.

In the real world Macy's department store put Gimbel's out of business back in the 50's. Macys was on west 34th street according to the Christmas movie classic "A Miracle on 34th St." Buddy enters Gimbel's from the West 35th Street entrance according to the sign on the wall. I guess the stores were right across the street from each other.
Blue is as cute, as cuddly and as feisty as a racoon....yup, that is definitely her spirit animal. My spirit animal is a horse, because I am free spirited and free minded. Which is a nice way of saying that I can be a little bit stubborn sometimes. But only sometimes......that is my version of an elf like Buddy
