The optic for close quarters up to 100 yards should be a red dot, holographic sight or illuminated LPVO 1x8 for medium range. Your reticle is a chevron not horse shoe. Match conditioned AR’s have been capable out to 1000 yards with as issued BDC iron sights since about 1995 as proven in NRA Long Range Competition, Service Rifle Division. This is prone sling supported competition. All that’s needed is a rifle fitted with a float tube, match grade barrel, and a hi-speed 2 stage trigger. Then attend Small Arms Firing School for some training to get you credentials to enter NRA LR events.
Totally, but just take the dive. It is wasted more than you would think and the worst part is the year weight which is now sometimes only a few days. Just go for it.
im really going back and forth on barrel length. 16, 18 or 20. I know the pros and cons of each, leaning 16 or 20, feel like 18 is stuck in the middle, and when i consider 16 or 20, the 20 inch starts to feel quite a bit longer than i want.. and a 16" precision oriented barrel would likely do 99% of what id need.
I agree that 16” will do most of what this will do. I’ve shot at 600m with my 13.9” as well. It just doesn’t have as much energy at the target. But that’s my general purpose rifle.
I've got an 18" and my buddy as a 16", both in 5.56. The difference in our DOPE is negligible. We've both shot them past 1100 yards with good results. The rifle length gas is nice on the 18", but if you're gonna run a can the 16" is nice to keep the length down. More important than length though is getting a good quality barrel. I'd much rather have an accurate 12.5" barrel than a 20" barrel with poor accuracy, regardless of the range I'm shooting. It doesn't matter what the bullet is doing at the target if you can't hit it.
Nice build, man! Going on 3 DMR/SPR builds now myself, all of which have their ammo preferences (unfortunately lol....). Currently testing a Lead & Steel JAG SPR. Zach w/ Monsoon Tactical
You should try that baby at 1000y. Can definitely be done! I shoot 8/10 avg at 1000y. I have a caldwell flashbang to light the target up. Best to try on a day with no wind 😂
@@OreGear I know it seems hard to believe. I have no incentive to lie. To be the most consistent, I use black hills Mk262. I use an 18" DD MK12 with a surefire RC2 suppressor. I use the applied ballistics app and a NF ATACR 4-16 with the Tremor 3 reticle. Depending on temperature, I have to dial 14-14.6 mils to hit a full size IPSC steel at 1000y. I don't think the round would kill anything that far tho lol. To be fair, when I shoot m193, I can only hit 20% of the time lol. M855 might be slightly better. I agree that past 600, the round is likely ineffective. Keep in mind dudes are still shooting 1000m at Camp Perry with 5.56 guns with iron sights. The target is fairly big, but it's doable.
@@OreGear my applied ballistics app says that my particular configuration goes transonic at ~900 yards. I think that's right because I can be very consistent at 700 with little to no wind.
@@OreGear I'm not trying to brag...I just know when you hit at 1000y for the first time you'll never forget it. So try it! Looks like a great gun and you are a great shooter.
I also prefer the primary arms acss scopes for my dmr’s. But I got rid of my 18” 5.56 and 18” 6.5 Grendel dmr and just went with a 16” 5.56 with a lpvo and a 16” 6.5 Grendel with the 4-14x primary arms hud dmr reticle as my dmr. I loved the thought of an 18” or maybe even a 20” 5.56 dmr until I built one and realized yea it’ll get out there to 600-650yds and even farther really but if there is any kind of wind you better be well practiced if you plan on hitting your target. Which I can do on a flat range but still at those distances the 223/5.56 is hitting like a 22 magnum essentially. I found the 6.5 Grendel to do much better and with 90-123gn bullets it hits much harder. I mostly run 105gn sgk and 107gn smk. I started with an 18” but found there really isn’t much loss dropping to a 16”. I feel a 16” Grendel is easily a 600-700yd rifle and I usually keep the 5.56 work under 400yds is why I went with an lpvo on it. Just gotta bite the bullet and stock up on 6.5 Grendel ammo is really the only negative I see. I’ve been shooting the Grendel for almost a decade now so I have plenty of ammo stocked up plus tons of reloading components. But definitely if I wasn’t able to go with a 6.5 Grendel for a dmr/spr it would be an 18-20” 5.56 with 75/77 grain ammo. Or the 73gn eld is actually my preferred longer range 5.56 bullet of choice
Why would someone want an SPR? To me this is a silly question. I think an SPR should nearly EVERYONES first AR 15!!! From a SHTF standpoint: You will NOT be clearing rooms like a Navy SEAL or in Call of Duty...you will want to keep people FAR away from family, home, food and ammo. If later you want to get a 13.9 or 10.5" fine, have a ball. But I think an SPR should be your first rifle. No question *Optic:* The Primary Arms GLX 2-10 and 3-18, Athlon Helos, Vortex Strike Eagle and a few others seem to be the popular scopes for SPR's but I think the Vortex Razor LHT 4-22x weighing only 21oz is criminally underrated in this genre. You will likely run an offset or piggy back red dot so having 4-22x rather than 12x, 16x or 18x is HUGE!! Give it a look. I am not Vortex lover but their razor line is legit!!
I was a little shocked because you ended up building something very similar to what I did like a year ago... 16" FN barrel w/DD MFR rail, 45° canted HS507 and Midwest Industries QD mount w/Vortex 6-25x50 and canted light on the opposing side. I noticed you removed the red dot at some points. Where you having issues with it? The issue I ran into was spent casing being ejected at the glass. I got a polymer killflash cap from OneHundredConcepts and a cage so the rifle could be laid down on that side (or dropped) and protect the red dot.
Looks almost exactly like my DMR “MOCK12” with 18 inch criterion barrel, same scope, off set RDS @12 o’clock tho, YHM suppressor (will change to the SRX mount system). I have an AERO precision lower tho 😅 with a larue MDT budget trigger cuz I’m poor 😂
The 1-10 is SFP making ranging at intermediate distances more challenging without limiting your field of view. The reticle is also more robust on the Griffin Mil.
I may have missed it but what is the offset dot mount? My one complaint with the MI QD mounts is the levers being on the right side. Limits options for offset sights, I assume if you had the scope mount back one slot, the offset mount wouldn’t work. Really wish MI would just put the levers on the left side and I’d swap the majority of my mounts to them.
Do you have any experience with the MDT oryx bipod? It seems very similar to the Magpul, and MDT has a good reputation for distance shooting equipment.
Only thing i could see working is VHT high temp exhaust header paint but idk if they have it in good camo colors. Best bet on cans is a cerakote or an anodization if you want it to last any amount of time
You can make it work but its not going to be as practical as something with a FFP mil reticle. You can get the Burris XTRII 3-15x, for not much more than what your signature is. Athlon has some decent options at reasonable price points as well if your looking to test the waters on the long range stuff without coughing up $2k + for a scope.
@@matthewminch5894 great response. I think I will just “make it work” for now but if/when I start working with a team and I need to communicate with them more effectively then I’ll probably switch to the mil scope.
@@lordvader5246 You can def use it for now, but for a SPR setup (competition use, longer engagement first round impacts) a FFP reticle is pretty critical. Being able to precisely dial or hold over for different engagement distances across your entire magnification range is critical for shooting small targets accurately at distance. The BDC reticles get you close 400 yards and in but dont offer much past that distance. If you are looking for something that just looks cool and want to go plink around then what you have is fine. If you want to get into the world of true precision shooting then I would sell that scope and get into a FFP now and start training with it. I have a cheap Athlon 4x14x FFP scope on my SPR rifle, its not the best but i paid under $300 for it and its adequate out to 800 yards which for a 556 gun is about the limit of practicality. There are tons of videos on ballistics out there and how that all works. Beware its addicting and gets expensive quick though.
@matthewminch5894 do you pair your optic with anything like a range finder in order to get more accurate inputs for the shooting equation? Also, do you dial or do you just use the mildots and hold?
@@lordvader5246 Yes and no for both. If time permits a range finder is a great tool and will be the most accurate. With precision shooting the more variation you can eliminate the better. You can also learn how to estimate range using the reticle (hence my recommendation for a FFP optic in MIls or MOA. If its a FFP either will work you just need to learn the calculations. Knowing the exact range for multiple targets is useful and you can build a dope card and just use the holds if your under time pressure. For targets past 500 yards or so I will typically dial and for targets 500 and in I typically hold because the drops are pretty consistent with my rifle from 100-500 yards. every gun and cartridge is different. Dialing is nice because you can just hold dead center and hold off for wind (or you can dial that too if you want). Wind changes a lot so i typically just hold left or right based on the wind call. Multiple targets under time constraint usually ill just use the holds.
If you’re shooting 700 meters, why would you limit yourself to a 5.56/.223? Even if you are using 77gr sierra’s, why not just bump up to a more capable .308 and extend your range/performance? Yes they are heavier, and you get to carry less rounds, but if you’re building a “precision” designated marksman type rifle, don’t you want to actually be able to reach out farther than the guy next to you with a standard m4?
@@OreGear that's what they said about the 1 to 8. Then the 1 to 10. It took some trial and error to get them right. Attibal has a 1 to 12 that is stupid expensive with a not so great reticle. It's a matter of time before the other manufacturers jump on that. 1 to 15 is probably three to five years away.
@OreGear i did a comparisons on my channel between Primary Arms PLX 1 to 8 ($1500 japanese glass ) and their SLX 1 to 10 ( $450 chinese glass). The test was to read the letters on cargo containers at about 1000 yds. Basic eye chart test. I found more magnification wins.
Im getting sub MOA out of mine with minimal load development. We will see how long it lasts but i think what you get for what you pay surprises people vs spending 3-4x the money for similar results. I did not expect mine to shoot as well as it does for the $120 i paid for it, but I will take it.
I don't understand putting a white light on a rifle that is basically set up for long range shots. It's like putting a weapon light on a tank cannon. The projectile will far outrange the limitations of the the light. They're at cross purposes.
The Blazer LEP light (which it looks like he has) can throw much further than traditional LED heads. Also, and more importantly, bad guys usually come out at night. So it's wise to always have a white light on any defensive firearm.
The thumbnail literally says, "Own everything out to 600 Meters"...as in 0-600. So literally any light would be appropriate on this type of rifle...but especially one like this with very good throw.

Very nice setup. I have a DDM4V7 pro with that optic and a piggy back red dot. I love the setup. My range is only to 600 yards but I can make hits fairly easy using AAC 77 grain smk. Love the videos keep em coming!
I am waiting to get a surefire muzzle device to run my RC2 on it. The one I want is out of stock currently.

Armageddon bag for the win!
Nice job! Oh, also, cool hat and cool range:).
We need to get out there at the same time at some point.
Super sweet build! What jacket are you wearing at 10:30?
That is a Gorka jacket from Grey Shop
Please Jesus we need suppressors to be legal without federal regulation.
Amen brother, amen
Come to Texas everyone else is.
Totally, but just take the dive. It is wasted more than you would think and the worst part is the year weight which is now sometimes only a few days. Just go for it.
@@galamonkey I’ll do it … but I won’t like it … 😂
I just paid the extortion fee for my first can..😢
im really going back and forth on barrel length.

Im getting the ruger sfar in 6.5 for a spr
You should try that baby at 1000y. Can definitely be done! I shoot 8/10 avg at 1000y. I have a caldwell flashbang to light the target up. Best to try on a day with no wind 😂
What ammo are you using. The transonic barrier usually makes ammo inconsistent at best past 600-700m. Hits can be made, but not 8/10.
I've also used handloads trying to mimic the Mk262 with smk or tmk bullets but they are only about 40%. I probably suck at reloading.
Sidewinder Concepts has great classes
No question
*Optic:* The Primary Arms GLX 2-10 and 3-18, Athlon Helos, Vortex Strike Eagle and a few others seem to be the popular scopes for SPR's but I think the Vortex Razor LHT 4-22x weighing only 21oz is criminally underrated in this genre. You will likely run an offset or piggy back red dot so having 4-22x rather than 12x, 16x or 18x is HUGE!! Give it a look. I am not Vortex lover but their razor line is legit!!
Love the thought process. I’m building something similar, but like you said… what’s your AO? I’m basically in a forest.
I hear you on sticking ammo every pay check… crazy expensive prices
2:36 omg i almost had a heart attack
So I have a 1 x10 primary arms ACSS 34 inch tube . why would I not use that or what is the advantage of your two by ten as opposed to my one by ten?
The 1-10 is SFP making ranging at intermediate distances more challenging without limiting your field of view. The reticle is also more robust on the Griffin Mil.
What is the total rifles weight will all accessories except magazine?
Good gun talk. Liked & subbed
Great content! Thanks.
That paint job, forget about it 🤌🏽
Sweet Rifle man!
Seriously considering a kp15 for an spr build. Any concerns about running the carbine spring with a rifle gas system?
As long as you have the proper buffer weight, you’ll be fine.
Maybe try a .224 Valk, 6.8spc or a .308 in this same set up
Me building another rifle: “Dammit Ryan…”
You’re welcome
I may have missed it but what is the offset dot mount? My one complaint with the MI QD mounts is the levers being on the right side. Limits options for offset sights, I assume if you had the scope mount back one slot, the offset mount wouldn’t work. Really wish MI would just put the levers on the left side and I’d swap the majority of my mounts to them.
This is a Sig brand universal offset mount
The magpul bipod is actually not that light, my atlas is within an ounce or two if I recall correctly.
Where is that range ? Is it open to the public ?
This is a private range unfortunately.
True Life: My SPR Wants to be a GPR, I want a DMR
How does the Athlon btr gen2 2-12x42 compare to the Primary Arms one you have?
Have 20" with same optic, vortex qd cantilever. How about micro dot on h12 Holosun he509t? What's your?
What part of oregon are you in? I just ordered this optic for a 14.5 pin and weld build I’ve been working on and would love to pick your brain.
Do you have any experience with the MDT oryx bipod? It seems very similar to the Magpul, and MDT has a good reputation for distance shooting equipment.
I do not. Looks interesting though.
Did you paint your suppressor? If so, what paint did you use? I couldn’t find anything in your other videos about how you did this.
I used some hi temp bbq paint, but it’s not holding up well
Only thing i could see working is VHT high temp exhaust header paint but idk if they have it in good camo colors. Best bet on cans is a cerakote or an anodization if you want it to last any amount of time
@@Grooove_e Thanks for the advice
When you said you had to much scope on it, what were you running beforehand?
I was running a 4-14x
I’m running a 3 x 18 on my mk 12. Some people say it’s too much scope, but I tend to like it. Beautiful build you have there Sir
I have a burris signature HD 3-15x optic, any thoughts on if that would serve an SPR well?
Can you mount a top dot on this LPVO mount?
Not currently. They are working on an adapter though.
What caliber is it?
what software do you to edit your videos ?
Adobe premiere
Who did you take the class from?
Sidewinder Concepts
Did you spray paint your can?
I did. I used hi temp bbq paint. It’s not holding up great
When is Hop and you gonna do a campout trip and collab and review your setups and gear?
Not sure. We both live in the PNW, but I haven’t met him.
How’s is HOSS UMC DOING
New sub. How is it, this is the first time seeing your channel? Oh yeah, YT hates gun channels and throttles them.😏
The simple paint looks best.
Did you even listen to what he said? He addresses that very thing at the beginning of the video.
ITS MA’AM 😂
Any reason to even consider an lpvo when you can have a setup like this?
Uhhhh...because.....you want one - Brass Facts
ACSS the things @14:45
What we really need is a 1 to 15 LPVO.
That wouldn’t be as good as it sounds
@@OreGear that's what they said about the 1 to 8.
Then the 1 to 10.
It took some trial and error to get them right.
Attibal has a 1 to 12 that is stupid expensive with a not so great reticle. It's a matter of time before the other manufacturers jump on that.
1 to 15 is probably three to five years away.
I would say the 1-10 is as good as it sounds either.
And the reticle is far inferior and the field of view and eye box is less forgiving than a 2.5-10
Pure hotness
I'm thumbs up number 556 lol.
It’s a sign
Nice
I don't know why everyone thinks ballistic disadvantage barrels are so good, maybe because they are so cheap to buy!
Im getting sub MOA out of mine with minimal load development. We will see how long it lasts but i think what you get for what you pay surprises people vs spending 3-4x the money for similar results. I did not expect mine to shoot as well as it does for the $120 i paid for it, but I will take it.
ya join the Geisel bandwagon
Im disliking this entirely because you jacked my whole ass idea. But for real, damn good build.
He jacked your whole ass?
Or just use a 308/6.5 creedmoor
Bog is the Anderson of tripods, you should sell that and get a decent tripod
Im going 16 in .308 and full auto glock. 😅
@@jedi7489so you can show them exactly where your position is?
pest control for large properties was mentioned a min or two in.
Did you watch the video? This light covers the effective range of this rifle.
The thumbnail literally says, "Own everything out to 600 Meters"...as in 0-600. So literally any light would be appropriate on this type of rifle...but especially one like this with very good throw.
