- Birmingham City fans, are we finally witnessing a transfer window that rights the wrongs of the past? After a disappointing relegation, the summer transfer window has started slowly but Blues are expected to be incredibly active this summer.
In this podcast we discuss the way the club are going about their business in relation to bringing in new players, which is very different from what has happened in previous seasons. Importantly, we ask consider whether Birmingham City have learned from their past mistakes. This transfer window could be transformative for the Blues, but only time will tell if we can built a team capable of challenging for promotion.

There is a lot of chatter today about a number of deals that are very close to being completed however until we hear it from the club it’s best not to celebrate. What I’m really impressed with is the players that we are linked with and the way the club is going about its business. All very professional and just makes it even more exciting! Mike Eerdhuijzen from Sparta Rotterdam a centre back coming in by the looks of things and a lot of their fans thought he would be playing in a higher divison(good thing for us).

Thank you for your comment Luke. Garry Cooke said that we wanted to build a Championship ready team and it certainly seems to be the case with the calibre of players we are targeting. I have a feeling that Allsop will start as first choice, but both goalkeepers will keep each other on their toes if they want to keep their place in the team. Its created good, healthy competition. We need more than 1 centre half, probably more likely 3 or 4, plus a backup full back on each side if we get Longman then he can play right wing back at least. I'm hoping Alfie May is a done deal, but we'll need another striker ( same type) for backup maybe Troy Parrott or Will Lankshear of Tottenham or Jude Soonsup Bell. KRO

To date we gave another goalie ( from Burnley) Alfie May forward, Juke signed new contract and possibly the Dane centre back. I agree that the next couple of months will be interesting with who will stay and who will go… the clash 😉

We seem to be missing out on transfers, maybe we should look to Holland, France or other avenues.
Thank you for your comment. Based upon what I am reading and the players we have been linked with I don’t think we are missing out on transfers at all. I do think that getting deals done can sometimes be a drawn out process however if I’m honest I’m happy with what I am seeing and happy with the way the club are going about their business. I think we're going about signing's the right way doing our research and only releasing info once the deal is across the line. Lets not forget that contracts reset on July 1st so I would expect a few signings from now on. Hopefully we'll sign a striker we desperately need one and a left footed centre half. I'm sure there will be more but in my opinion that's what we lacked last season. This is going to be a massive window for us we're laying the foundations for the future. KRO.

I think we will now start to see many new faces coming into the club over the next weeks and months. We need strengthening in all areas but as I said in the podcast I think our forward line is the area that needs most work. KRO and kind regards (Gary)
I'm not worried about when we sign new players as long as we get the right ones. To an extent, the longer it takes the better. The owners are financially savvy. Their motto will be 'don't reveal your price'. Announcing deals early is not their way. Tom Wagner said he spent a year to decide whether or not to take over the club.
The other angle is that Davies has only ever been a coach. He's thinking in terms of what he can do with what he's got already. He'll want to get familiar with the squad first. He'll keep those with fire in their bellies and get rid of the rest. He's more or less said as much.
Don't forget, if it wasn't for the chaos of last season, the team would still be in the Championship. They are a 'Championship ready' team.
Perhaps the best signing has already been made: it's Chris Davies.
Thank you for your comment. You make some good points and in fact I mentioned in the podcast that we already have some decent players in the squad. Most of them under performed last season but with better players around them and some decent coaching they could once again be good assets for us.

As you point out we recorded this podcast just before Bailey Peacock Farrell was announced and I've seen a lot of speculation today in relation to some excellent players. Some reports are that deals are almost done however, we will always need to wait until any signing is announced by the club before we start celebrating! KRO and kind regards (Gary)

Not concerned. In league 1 you have to wait for all the agents and players go through all their offers from the leagues above first and try to counter if needed to get them. As you mentioned all this takes lots of time. Also with Euros going on i think it slows down process as a trickle down effect big players have not maybe signed or clubs above have not released everyone yet because of this. As a player as an example.... if i got an offer from these 4 teams Oxford,Plymouth,Derby County and Birmingham it would be a very tough choice and take a lot of time to sort out. They have to factor money, location, opportunity to play, chance of them to go up, stay or go down, do you want to be in league 1 now or champ now and more... so many tough decisions..which team would you choose and why? (removing your bias!)
Thank you for your comment. I think that at the moment that Blues can sell a vision to transfer targets that very few clubs could offer at the moment. This is why I think we will see some very good players being prepared to join us in League One rather than take offers from clubs in higher leagues.

Thank you for your comment Roger. I don’t know a great deal about them to be honest but from what I have been reading they both seem like decent players and would be good additions.
I’m sure the club are scouring Europe for players and we know that Chris Davies is big on data analytics so I’m sure anyone we target will have been thoroughly vetted. KRO and kind regards (Gary)
Remember we're still in Euro mode. A lot of clubs are waiting to see how potential targets are fairing. But also remember, as Chelsea so wonderfully showed us, quality is better than quantity.
My club has only announced one signing (Raphael Borges Rodrigues from A-League side Macarthur) on the wing. I think we'll start to see some movement this week as you say.
But also don't forget, Davies' connections with Spurs could see Blues get some exciting Spurs academy prospects on loans to give them exposure to League One's physicality. I think I posted an article on your Twitter re this. Very exciting time.

Thank you for your comment Nick. I think that we finally have owners who have put a structure in place and a process to target quality players. We have signed two goalkeepers in Ryan Allsop and Baily Peacock Farrell and we have been linked with a whole range of other quality players. Considering we were relegated, I've never seen so much excitement in the Blues fans at this time of the season before.

Stats based signings crunching the numbers Thing like miles run passes made blocks made headers won intersessions completed position held its not just all about Goals.
Juke has signed a 1 year extension. Alfie May we have had a bid excepted I think Huddersfield are out the running now their bid was rejected. but Plymouth are also after him and its believed they matched our bid . We also signed Peacock-Farrell that's 2 good Keepers giving competition for places. The Mike Eerdhuijzen, I understand he has agreed terms and having a medical on Tuesday.
We have been linked with Connor Goldson but I don't think there is much in that one his wage would be to high at 37k per week and why would he except a 52% pay cut when he has offers from the Saudi league. I hope Alfie May choses us I do think we can pay a better pay package than Plymouth it deepens on if he is happy to stay in league 1.

Thank you for your comment Stephen. I think it is common for players to return on the first Monday in July. Chris Davies can now finally start to assess the players that are still here and make decisions on whether he wants them to stay or whether they will be moved on.
