Can Birmingham City Keep Their International Gems? Will THESE Stars STICK AROUND in League One? #90

  • Birmingham City's relegation to League One was a massive blow to the club, which has left a big question mark hanging over their international stars. Will Krystian Beilek, Koji Myoshi, Paik, Juninho Bacuna and Jordan James choose to stick around and help the Blues fight for promotion back to the Championship? Or will the lure of offers from clubs in higher leagues be too strong to resist?
In this podcast we discuss the future of Birmingham City's international contingent and answer the questions of whether we think they will stay and indeed do we actually want then to stay.

Wouldn't worry me if they all went. They are all responsible for getting us in this position, they had ample chances to get us put of the trouble we were in. Just would like to see some committed players come in, it's all getting a bit boring now, need to see some action

@SmallHeathAllianceFC I will say this tho , I remember the last time we were down there under Barry Fry, places like Stockport, Grimsby, Charlton, Tranmere, anybody players or supporters who think it's going to be an easy ride, are in for a very rude awakening . I hope he signs players who are up for battle, because last year's players wasnt

Some managers are better than others at getting players to fight for the club. Perhaps we should take a punt on keeping Bacuna up until January to see if Davies can get him to deliver his best every time. Sometimes a little personal chemistry works wonders. Given the managerial and tactical chaos of last season, some players were bound to feel unappreciated and demotivated at times. They aren't all robots - at least not until around 2052.

Thanks for commenting and really valid point :)
I totally agree that there is no doubt the manager situation last year had a huge impact. In fact if you took the PPG average for Mowbray, Rowett and Eustace we would have been a top half team. Madness really when you think about it!
But yeah I agree and all players are different. They respond to different styles of management and communication etc and having so many managers would have had a huge impact.
My sentiment of only having players that want to play for this club is really important for me. I want to see passion and fight next season :)
Thanks again. Very best and KRO!

Although not always constructive in these discussions I can't resist throwing out names from the my Blues past which could be the inspiration or templates for a True Blues player..my first game. Montgomery in goal, Pendrey, Page,Big Joe G and TF score..my first season ticket year '83-84 we had Tony's got his coat on in goal, the passions of Blake, Van Den Hauwe, Hoppo and Brian Roberts to name but a few who really epitomised when you sing Keep Right On what it means to play for our badge in the true sense of the word..any players we get now need to get close to this ideal..then the crowd can get back to it's passionate best as we begin this upwards journey.KRO..other players since have had these qualities..we know who they are.

Hopefully farewell to Pritchard, JJ will only stay if we give him the freedom/game time that he had under Rooney and of course Bielik ticks all of the boxes if he stays provided that he stays free of injury and is played as a defensive midfielder. Not too bothered about anyone else staying, but I would love to see Hannibal back. So what if he gets sent off a few times as Roy Keane did for Man Utd. I do agree that constantly selling your youngsters isn't great for the future and we do definitely need to start keeping hold of the really promising ones that start to come through. It's the core foundations and the future of the club on the pitch effectively. Thankfully we have a brilliant academy system which has produced some real talent over the years.
Just my personal opinion here in regards to JJ specifically that I am hearing the rumours be a £7-10 million price range and although he is only a youngster and we've seen progression especially this season, he is still an overrated player. It might be because he constantly get's played out on the wing and that just isn't his position. Either way, will be interesting to see what happens there.

  • @richardpincher8936

In Chris Davies we have to trust. I get the impression that he won't suffer fools gladly. I don't agree that by having a conversation with the international players we're going cap in hand and all the power is with the player, plus if we were to get promoted and hopefully promoted again from the Championship ASAP then the club will think of nothing of getting rid of those players because they're not the desired quality for the Premier League so it cuts both ways. Whatever is decided and when, ideally has to right and best for both parties.
Last season was awful and it's time to draw a line under that now and trust the new manager and his team. If any player wants to move on then the club just need to get the right and best price and if they want to stay then they need to get their head down, work hard and give their all for the club.
Bielik doesn't need to worry about his international football career as he isn't in the current squad, so I'm sure that this is a factor in his decision to stay. Personally, I think Bielik is overrated. I think he's slow and I think he will be found wanting for pace, but I hope I'm wrong. I don't think he's the best communicator so he wouldn't be my captain. I do agree that he's a better centre half than he is a centre midfielder and he's physically strong but if he stays he stays and if he was to move on I would be ok with that too. Personally, I think he will stay and whilst he wouldn't be my choice for captain, there's a chance he might be given the current list of candidates. Personally, I would like us to sign a proper leader both in terms of how they play and how they communicate.
I think JJ is under appreciated, he's one of our own and when played in the middle he is a very influential player. I'm not comparing him to Foden but look at the difference in level of performance between club and country. Play players in their best position. The clubs sniffing around JJ tells you that he’s a proper player. As much as I don't like Rooney, he was a proper player and he really rated JJ. Personally I think he will go, so the club just needs to get the best price for him.
Bacuna if he was consistent would be a proper player, but that's the difference between being a player and a proper player. For me Bacuna is better more than he's not. Again he another player that needs to play in his best position on a consistent basis to get the best out of him and best for the team. At times he's frustrating yes, but if he can find thar consistent form of a lot more good than OK or bad then I would love him to stay, I hope he does.
Paik is a keep for me. He is a holding midfielder who can dictate the play. Rowett played him out of position at times and that didn't work for him or the team, right position and he's right for Blues and one for League One and the Championship. I hope he stays. I have no idea if he will or not, but I don't doubt his commitment if he was to stay.
Miyoshi is someone that I would like to keep. He has the legs and energy that you need as part of a balanced team. He has an eye for goal, he just needs to find that consistency but I think with a steady and stable management team, I think he will be a very important player for Blues in League One. He has pace and he can hurt opposition teams with that and it looks like he has the type of character that we want and need.
I don't think Blues will keep any player that doesn't want to be part of the project (I don't like that word 🤣) but equally apart from JJ who I think out of the international players is the one that gets the biggest move by some distance, then I think the remaining 4 would be crazy to leave Blues. Next summer there's no international tournament/competition as far as I'm aware so that's not an immediate consideration with regards to missing out on an international place that in a big tournament.
I think the players and the club have one season to see how it goes, if it's only one season in League One which we all hope it will be (no guarantees of course) then that's not bad at all in the overall picture of things.
Brilliant video again gents. KRO 💙

Thanks, Richard. Always look forward to your comments and insights :)
In Chris Davies, we trust indeed. I also agree that he will set a precedent from the start and will not want any passengers or will not tolerate any bad apples spoiling the cart. He will nip that in the bud and to be honest, no matter how big or good the player if they don't want to play, battle and give everything for this club I would get sold anyway. In League 1 we need a team who are up for every game and want to win every ball.
Interesting take on Bielik and JJ it seems we have slightly opposing opinions on these to some extent. Those are fair points though, totally respect your point of view; this is why we love football and this club. All about opinions. I think JJ is having offers because of his age, international status now and the fact he most certainly has come on leaps and bounds this past year. I personally think my opinion of him being overrated stems from him being out of position most of the season. Out on the wing, he is significantly less effective. I would personally still take the rumoured £7-10 million. It's a difficult one cause someone raised a really good point about not making a habit of selling all your best young talent when they are so young. This is how you build the foundations of the club and a bright future.
Totally agree about Bacuna. It is the consistency as to why I have a love/hate relationship as a fan. No doubt on his day he is a quality player but those days just aren't consistent enough for me.
I agree with the comments about Paik and Miyoshi but would just add I think they could both do with a bit more physicality. They were getting shrugged off the ball far too easily in those last few games of the season for me.
You've ended the comment perfectly I think the club and players have one season to see how it goes. I feel this is the mindset of several players. That isn't a negative just re-iterating what you said about international tournaments etc.
      Very best Richard, KRO!

@SmallHeathAllianceFC Hi Matt. It's very, very rare that I don't fully agree with you and your Dad. You're right about your channel. It provides a platform that, as fans, we can listen to and read what others think, and your channel is the best around for doing this.
I don't disagree with your valuation of JJ and if we get 7 - 10 million if he does move on then that's decent money in the overall scheme of things, but personally I would really like him to stay but I highly doubt it. I do judge him on his performances in the middle, out on the left he is wasted and also it's a waste of time putting him out there.
I like the fact that we can have a difference of opinion but do so in such a respectful way.
It will be interesting to see who is still at the club and what new faces we have for the season ahead once the summer transfer window is slammed shut. There's always the January transfer window of course.
It's fair to say that we still have a lot of business to do before the season kicks off.
Thank you as always for taking the time and making the effort to respond to not only mine but to all the other comments too. You and your Dad are doing a brilliant job and that's reflected in your ever increasing popularity and the positive feedback that you get on a regular and consistent basis.

Would love Bielik,Koji and Paik to stay. Hopefully Buchanan and Laird stick with us too as I think that would give us a nucleus of a good and exciting team to watch for the coming season. Agree with you both to cash in on JJ,we could possibly bring in a couple of players with the money. KRO

I think if the majority of our defence sticks around (Assuming Bielik is CB) we would have the strongest defence in the league. If we can get someone to partner KB we would seriously be tough to break down.

"Hungry players" love it and totally agree. In League 1 we need a slightly different pedigree and battle and that as you say means hunger, desire and some passion!

Out of the 5 internationals here are my thoughts:
Juninho Bacuna - would be gutted to see him leave as he is versatile and clearly respects the club with his instagram posts and several performances last year (Southampton at home springs to mind). He does need to be more consistent though lads agreed.
Koji Miyoshi - indifferent as he clearly has the quality but in such a physical league would he adapt well? I would rather want him to stay as he is an X-Factor for our team but wouldn’t be too upset with him going.
Krystian Bielik - clearly shows his commitment to the team and he’s improved ever since slotting in centre half, I would want him to stay and like Matt says make him captain.
Jordan James - contrary to the majority I would want him to stay as he made leaps and bounds last season even though he was played out of position, losing him would just be typical blues losing our young talents.
Seung Ho Paik - out of all these players I can’t see the hype (scores one banger in the World Cup and people think he’s amazing). Bang average in my opinion, I don’t understand how he’s made it to the South Korean national team just based on last season. Hope I’m wrong and he comes out blasting this season but wouldn’t be mad if he left.

Thanks for commenting in such detail and taking the time really appreciated :)
Fair point about Bacuna to be fair. He is versatile and from memory was the only player who came out and actually apologised for last season. Of course, it's all about opinion and I personally would take the cash as I think the positions he fills could be replaced quite easily with some really exciting talent.
Good point about Miyoshi and his physicality. We worry about this as well but could be a great asset in League 1.
Bielik - 100% captain material in there.
Fair point about JJ. I do agree he has really come on leaps and bounds but I do feel the hype is slightly overrated. If the money rumour is true I feel we would be laughing all the way to the bank if we sold.
Paik - I quite like Paik. I don't think we saw the best of him after Mowbray had to take his sick absence from the club. I think there is a player in there and hopefully, CB can get the best out of him.
Thanks again mate, really appreciate the comment!

Unfortunately, there’s little loyalty from most players. Practically, I’d only want to keep Bielik (as centre half), Miyoshi and Paik. Bacuna and JJ are decent players, but I think it’s time we moved them on and get some cash in. I’m hearing speculation we’re getting Hannibal back on loan - which would be a fantastic appointment.

Sorry but players are workers, if offered more wages and better deals anyone would consider it, Davies has the job to convince them they are better off and gauge where they are at, that is not cap in hand to them. Be realistic they are not Blues fans they are doing their job to look after their loved ones like we all would. I am sure Mr Davies will sort it out.

Valid point. If I was on £5K a week and someone then offered me £10K a week I would of course consider it. (I do not earn that sort of money btw just relating it to footballers salary 😂)
Thankfully now we have come to the end of the FFP cycle and finances can be loosened a little we can offer very competitive and attractive wages etc.
They may not be Blues fans I get that but this season I want to see a lot more fight than we did last season. The passion was seriously lacking in certain areas and at certain times and I know we could talk about manager turnover and lots of other things that happened and I get that but this year I want a squad who want the fight and battle! :)

Yeah, he certainly had an underwhelming second half of the season. Part of that was the Atalanta deal not going through and also him constantly being played out of position and on the wing. This used to drive me insane, he was ineffective out wide in most games.
