I remember the first I time watched this movie, I was like 9, on a plane and thought to myself this looks like a cool kids movie. And then movie proceeded to scare the living shit out of me, It was so utterly creepy. I had nightmares about it for months. And I still vividly remember the movie 11 years later.

Reminds me of a very old claymation movie about Mark Twain which featured a character from his story 'Mysterious Stranger' who is literally Satan. SO many children were watching what they thought was a child's show only to find Satan trying to tell them that all life was pointless and humans were all evil and destructive.
I never seen the movie. But just watching this video scares the shit out of me as an adult. Regardless of all the satire in this video. I really don’t understand how this is a kids movie. If a satirical retelling of this movie scares me as an adult, how can it not scare small children?

To be fair, I've heard that in the book the hand is dealt with even more stupidly. Like, Coraline makes it fall in the well *still whole and alongside the key* .
Literally nothing is stopping it from climbing up again. My only logical explanation was that Gaiman wanted to leave the door open to a sequel (but it hasn't happened thus far)
There’s a theory that the well is a portal to the other world. Whether the hand is whole or not, a sequel could very much happen.
@@Cryscorde i so love that theory. basically, in the beginnign wybie says that the well is so deep that you can look up during the day and you see stars. when the doll is drifting from the real world to the beldams world, it is surrounded by stars. another thing, the cat says that there are so many entrances to the other world, and the well could very well be one, so coraline literally just gave the key back to the beldam
There's actually a lot of witch and faerie lore in this work, not the least of which is that candy loop which looks exactly like a 'hagstone' used to see through witchy deceptions. The witch herself is called the 'Beldam' in the book, a very traditional witch name in folklore. And the reason they used to dunk women in water to see if they were witches is because it was thought that the pure and natural element would simply reject the witch (much like vampires and running water). So the witch would float instead of drown and they'd burn or hang her. So putting the key at the bottom of the well should, in theory, be one of the few places the witch CAN'T get to or influence.

This was confusing if you read the book but never saw the movie. The movie is nothing like the book.
Edit: in the book the cat goes between the worlds through a tree. The cat explains that he doesn't need a name because cats don't come when you call them anyway.
The cat bending reality when he sticks his head in the tree as he talks about dimension hoping makes more sense now.

Never got freaked out by the book, but the tunnel scene where she’s walking to and back from the other world is just weird, she talks about the tunnel like it was alive.

It follows the logic of the saying "eyes are the window to the soul", meaning that the way to see one's soul is by peering into their eyes. Your reward: more movie lore: The faces the kids are making as ghosts are "the last faces they ever made", or more specifically the emotion they had when they realized what the button deal actually meant, which just adds on to the brutality of the Beldam. Coraline herself briefly makes the face she would have had if she took the button deal during that sequence, too. It was shock. The boy was shame, the tall girl was fear, and the short girl was betrayal.

it's worse in the book. in the book, shortly after Other Father tries, and fails, to help her escape the Beldam, she goes to the cellar of the Other house during a break the Beldam gave her. she finds Other Father there, in his true form. a pile of clay. he shapes a mouth for himself and explains that he truly loves her and wants to help her escape, but the Beldam's influence is too strong. his own free will then collapses, and the Beldam then makes him attack Coraline, who escapes. the worst part of it is that he still is aware of what's happening while the Beldam controlled him, as he says "I'm sorry" as he attacks.

I first watched this movie when I was 9 on a road trip. See, as a child, I was a wimp. I still kinda am, especially for scary stuff. My sister loves scary stuff, even at that age, and told me she loved the movie, nothing else. So I decided to watch it. It haunted me longer than any other thing that scared me did. I love the movie now, but it gives me those weird chills. This story is funny to me because my sister knew the movie was scary. She knew I loathed scary stuff. And yet she told me about it anyway. She still does that now.
After seeing the memes, I was interested in knowing the story but not willing to watch a 2 hour movie. Thanks for giving such an amazing review for the movie.
0:55 I actually was inspired to read the book of Coraline and yes it was pretty good (there's a couple of audiobooks for free on TH-cam). And it's hilarious that a part of the cat's character, is that Cats don't have or need names, and it's so funny that HighBoi just instantly assigns him a name, lol. @@User23-L-23 well. I watched this with my older brothers. They were throwing criticisms one after another throughout the movie. And when the scene where the girl threw the cat to the witch appeared. They mocked her so hard, saying she is so stupid, just run bla bla. And I too, became frustrated. Though I didn't say anything the entire time
