Pocahontas Movie Description:
Pocahontas is a 1995 American animated musical historical drama film based on the life of Powhatan woman Pocahontas and the arrival of English colonial settlers from the Virginia Company. The film romanticizes Pocahontas' encounter with John Smith and her legendary saving of his life. The film was produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation and released by Walt Disney Pictures. It is the 33rd Disney animated feature film and the sixth film produced and released during the Disney Renaissance.
The film was directed by Mike Gabriel and Eric Goldberg (in his feature directorial debut) and produced by Jim Pentecost, from a screenplay written by Phillip LaZebnik, Carl Binder, and Susannah Grant. The voice cast features Irene Bedard and Mel Gibson as Pocahontas and Smith, respectively, with David Ogden Stiers, Russell Means, Christian Bale, Billy Connolly, and Linda Hunt providing other voices. The score was composed by Alan Menken, who also wrote the film's songs with lyricist Stephen Schwartz.
After making his directorial debut with The Rescuers Down Under (1990), Gabriel conceived the film during a Thanksgiving weekend. The project went into development concurrently with The Lion King (1994), and attracted most of Disney's top animators. Meanwhile, Disney studio chairman Jeffrey Katzenberg decided that the film should be a serious romantic epic in the vein of Beauty and the Beast (1991), in hope that like Beauty, it would also be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture. Screenwriters Binder, Grant, and LaZebnik took creative liberties with history in an attempt to make the film palatable to audiences.
Pocahontas was released on June 16, 1995, to mixed reactions from reviewers, who praised its animation, voice performances, and music, but criticized its story with its lack of focus on tone. The film's historical inaccuracies and racial overtones received polarized responses. Pocahontas earned over $346 million at the box office. The film received two Academy Awards for Best Musical or Comedy Score for Menken and Best Original Song for "Colors of the Wind". According to critics, the depiction of Pocahontas as an empowered heroine influenced subsequent Disney films like Mulan (1998) and Frozen (2013).

Pocahontas was always my favorite princess, especially being Native myself. Historical inaccuracies aside, it was nice to see some kind of representation as a kid. So many "Native" characters in older movies/shows were based on stereotypes and usually weren't played/voiced by actual Native American actors. Some people let the history ruin the movie for them but I think it's fine to enjoy the story itself and the animation/music is beautiful too. 💕

Considering I’ve never heard anyone talk about this movie, I’d say it’s underrated.
Considering it's not really that great either, I'd say it's lack of any reputation is accurate.
Colors of the wind goes hard though.
I think this movie is amazing. Just as good as any other Disney renaissance film from the 90’s. That is just my opinion but totally understand that not everyone agrees with that. I just love the feel of this movie. The score, the songs. I love the message. I always though it was solid.
Yeah compared to the other Disney renaissance movies this one gets talked about the least.

@@YungandRekless545 I think it's weaker than most of the other musicals, but the soundtrack is amazing. The story/pacing could have been improved a bit, but it's still a good movie, even if it isn't the best. That's just my opinion though.
The ironic thing about this movie is the A list team at Disney passed up another movie to do this because they felt it was going to be the smash hit of the year, the 2nd B list team was given the other movie: It was Lion King 🦁 👑
They should have realized that a King aslways trumps a Princess...

@@vanhattfield8292 Not for Disney since their princesses are merchandise juggernauts. The Lion King is the exception. Unfortunately for Hercules & Tarzan, they likely don't sell as much as Pocahontas.
@@jp3813 Hercules and Tarzan were not Kings. The 2019 remake of The Lion King is Disney's all time highest grossing animated film, making $1.65 billion worldwide So, like I said, the King trumps Princesses, even at Disney. 😂

This was my paternal grandmother's favorite movie! She was Kiowa and after many years of watching indigenous Americans being portrayed in a bad light in movies, she cried when she saw characters that looked just like her when this movie premiered. She even used this movie to teach me about our heritage and made it very clear that this was not accurate at all but it was nice to finally see characters that looked like us.

As a little girl, this was the closest I had to representation for me in a Disney movie. We were both mocha brown cinnamon skinned, both had long black hair, both had a feisty grandmother who we were super close to who spat wisdom, both were into woodland ish.....Pocahontas was my girl as a 6 year old in the 90's. This film holds so much nostalgia for me, and as a child, I didn't understand why she was left out so much in the Disney media as a character. I didn't want to be Belle, or Cinderella, and Jasmine was too prissy and spoiled for me. I wanted to be Pocahontas.

@SamoaVsEverybody_814 yes because where I come from we have similar sounding names as there were many arawaks that settled there and my country still use wooden boats in the more rural areas. Although it’s not historically accurate the message it brings is beautiful as well still relates in this day
Not overrated, just extremely and historically inaccurate
If you weren't a girl-child under the age of 11-12 when this movie came out, you're not gonna get it. This movie thrives purely off of nostalgia. And, yes, as a light-skinned girl, this movie was a breath of fresh air. No other light-skinned characters in a Disney movie before had as much agency as Pocahontas before or since.
And thankfully there is literally no f***ing way that Disney would remake this since they've been trying to bury it for the past 2 decades.
Aladdin was out before Pocahontas so we did have Jasmine, but I get what you saying

The reason why Disney would never do a live action of this movie is because Disney has become woke. It’s becoming ridiculous that Disney is trying to get away from so many of their incredible movies. We get it, it was a different time with some of the movies, but again Disney trying to get away from so many amazing movies is just stupid. Them going woke is a horrible idea.

I loved this movie so much when I was little and my mom took me to Jamestown because I was obsessed. She took me to all the historic places to learn the real history of Pocahontas. Still love it to this day...aside from the historical inaccuracies. This movie started my love of history

23:53 - Originally, there was another song there. "If I Never Knew You" is a duet between John Smith and Pocahontas. It's still in the film over the end credits, and the romantic music cues in the film for them together. It was cut because of pacing and time...but there is a version of the film that restores the song, with the still unfinished footage. It's actually a really good song.
I do like the movie, but it IS really wonky. To me, it was like they wanted to do an actual animated film for adults, but the need to do funny cute stuff for kids hampered the effort. It is really uneven. The songs by Alan Menken and Scott Schwartz are amazing and need to have a home in a Broadway show, but I doubt this will ever go that route.
Actually it was cut for another reason, and it was stupid beyond belief, kids hated the song.

I think the love relationship between Pocahontas and John Smith in this Disney movie shows a uniqueness and difference from other Disney movies' love relationships.
From being the first interracial couple in Disney ever, to showing that love has no skin color.
But love is for everyone.
Two great different people who find each other, even though they are both from two different worlds, which shows a great moral in this Disney movie.
That Pocahontas changed the view of John Smith that the world does not have to be in classic "Black/White", but that it can become a colorful free world for everyone.
That love cures all forms of hate.
Felt that the Disney love affair created and showed that people can change for the better, and have something good in them.
This is one of my favorite Disney movies. And yes- Avatar is basically a re-telling of the Pocahontas story.

I don't understand what you find so cringe about the romance aspect. He learned empathy and that we are all equal to one another from her, things he'd never even considered before. (I'm Indigenous and the only thing I don't like is that they didn't make an original Native female protagonist, instead choosing to use Pocahontas and then changing her entire story). That's what happened to John by getting to know Pocahontas, he ended saving the chief because he acknowledged him as an equal.
In other words, you could say that John didn't actually "hate" the Indians, but he wasn't knowledgeable in regards to who they where and believed the "savage" propaganda given to him by his people.
So disinformation and naivete are the enemies here and the moral is, try to understand before judging, deciding and acting.

I love this movie even though the real story of Pocahontas is very different. Her grave is few towns over from where I live, visited it a few times before it’s a really interesting story
I love this movie. Now and as a kid… I’m Navajo. I love the long hair animation and the soundtrack. The romance stuff wasn’t what sold me on this movie. I learned that situations don’t always have to be black or white. It can be the best of both sides meshing well together to become something better. That’s what I got from this movie…. Fun fact: I used to run around the dirt and rocks near the wash listening to the songs on a CD player pretending to be Pocahontas. 🥰
Jon Smith saying that "he never really belonged anywhere" is surprisingly accurate. He was an adventuring soldier who fought throughout most of Europe before going to America as the original Governor of Jamestown (historically, Ratcliffe was his replacement when Smith went back to England to bring supplies to the colony). The saber on his back during the opening sequence is probably a reference to the one that was gifted to him in Transylvania.
This movie is so underrated!!! And i actually enjoy the ending of this movie so much especially when she runs to the cliff and the wind blows to john smith & they wave goodbye to one another, its absolutely beautiful!!! Still love your reaction because you saw the beauty in the way they shot it & the message behind it. Happy Thanksgiving mello!!!!!

Meeko is the best part, lol. I always laugh hard in all of his scenes.
I was a kid when this came out, so I loved it and it still holds a spot in my heart, *but* the historical inaccuracy of it is extreme. This was in no way a romantic story in real life. If you decide to look into the way things really happened, it hurts.
I certainly hope they don’t intend to turn this into a live action. I cannot possibly see how that would be a good, smart, or beneficial decision. There are a few retellings already in existence that are much more accurate, and considering it’s not a sunshine and rainbows story, what would be the point in Disney making another one? There are other options to choose from or the option to not feel compelled to remake every animated film into live action verbatim.

12:29 it's funny you said it's like Avatar. Avatar is pretty much the plot of Pocahontas. People come to a strange land to harvest a precious material. One of them falls in love with a native, while their people ravage the territory.
Yes, Pocahontas was 10 when she meet him and was kidnapped and held for ransom, she married a different English man when she was between 16/18 and died in her early 20s. She did not like John Smith and disputed the stories he told about there meeting. I think that is why the score for the movie is so low. I still love it because she was the first disney princess of color in the 90s but you have to disassociate it from any real history. Love your review.

Yes. It isn't just that it's historically inaccurate, it's that it outright glorifies some pretty atrocious things. Which is a pity because I don't think the story in the movie is bad. They just shouldn't have based it on Pocahontas.
Jasmine was technically the first PoC princess. She's often overlooked for some reason.

It’s just really odd that it had to be Pocahontas. Similar to the other story they made, Lion King, even though many want you to believe it was based off an anime. From what I've heard, it's actually more likely that John Smith never even met her. The first few 'versions' of his accounts didn't include any mention of her, and a native speaker I saw a recording of speaking at Jamestown believes it's likely he just added some kind of interaction with 'the chief's daughter'/her saving his life as an afterthought years after the fact to make himself sound more important.
Fun fact- the animation in this movie was done by Disneys A team because they thought this movie had a lot of potential and instead they had Disneys B team do the lion king
Jeffrey Katzenberg wanted an Academy Award for Best Picture for this movie. Beauty and Beast was the only film nominated so far. Boy did he bet on the wrong horse.

Up's nomination was also the first time the Best Picture category opened up to 10 nominees instead of five. The Academy decided that they needed to make popular or high-grossing movies eligible for the award.
My mom took me to see this in theaters. Afterwords, we went to a nearby Burger King. And who did I see as soon as I walked in? Pocahontas. Not sure if the theatre hired someone, or if she was doing a kids party, or what. But in my kid brain, it was really her. I told her that I just watched her movie and that she is very pretty. She said thank you and gave me a hug. Its still one of my favorite childhood highlights
I know Burger King was doing a cross promotion with the film at the time because I got two commemorative cups from there.
“Savages” is one of the most hateful songs Disney has ever done. That and Hellfire from Hunchback.
But hellfire is actually good
The thing about the scene with the song Savages is that its very visually brilliant too. Each side is illuminated with lights that make their skin appear colored close to the other and they are basically saying the same thing about one another while being portrayed visually as no differences between them as people. It's also about how those in power can exploit the differences between us for their own power or gain.
Buuuuut - let's be honest - one side WAS a bit more correct than the other. Okay, more than a bit! 🤷

Warms my heart to see you react to Disney’s Pocahontas. The soundtrack evokes something in the spirit. While this may not be an accurate depiction, it’s one for the vault! And loved by many but undoubtedly underrated
This movie is like a guilty pleasure for me. It's understandable why people hate it. It's historically inaccurate and might be problematic for native Americans, but I can't help but love the art and the music, and I'm guilty of shipping the two main characters together.

Honestly, this is one of the most influential animated movies and everybody who was raised in 90s and 00s loves it.

I don't care whatever people say about this movie, I will forever LOVE it. The music is absolutely beautiful and powerful, I always have to hold back tears at some point and it was like this even when I was a child back then (but ok, I'm very sensitive when it comes to music in general :P )
But the romance -....yeah... I'm with you with that. I actually can't really stand romance in any movies at all xD EXCEPT for romantic movies like..."OKAY. it's a movie about ROMANCE so this is what I get" - but romance in other movies always makes me want to skip to the next scene, like "Okok, you two can be together, I don't care, I just don't want to see it all the time. xD

You are the only person I've seen that didn't cry at the end. Personally, Pocahontas is number 5 Of my all time favorite Disney movies, and believe it or not, the version you watched was the incomplete version. The thing is that the John Smith and Pocahontas relationship is mixed but because of the deleted song being installed into the new version, many people have changed their views on it, even Roger Ebert (He still was mixed on the film, but blasted Disney for cutting the song). Even Alan Menken, who to this day, still regrets cutting it. The song is I never knew you and yes, that is Mel Gibson singing and he's not bad. Btw, the song Savages while hated at the beginning, it's more mixed now giving the political climate, and Irene Bedard, voice of Pocahontas, has made peace with the song back in 2020. I still find this couple with the best chemistry and it's still shocking that neither Gibson or Irene were in the same room recording (no, they didn't hate each other, it was a time issue due to Gibson being busy at the time). My good friend Alex, who is Native American, prefers Pocahontas over any of the past Disney films that had Native Americans in it because they were offensive, and he loves Savages because this was the mindset back then. Also, the villain Ratcliffe, was a real person, and you don't want to know what the Powhatans did to him, even some Native Americans are not proud of that because in real life, he wanted to work together with the Natives. Besides the issue with the cut song, my only complaint is that this was the shortest Disney movie of the Renaissance, and I felt if they got to 90 minutes they could have stretched out the story. But it's your opinion, don't have to agree, but I respect it.
I agree with everything you said for the most part. It’s the fact some people still think they were the first English colonist here that’s crazy. Because if the research was done people would know Christopher Columbus wasn’t who first came here it was an Italian merchant, navigator and explorer named Americus Vespucius or in American language “Amerigo Vespucci” hints how we leave IN AMERICA & This isn’t Colombia but this is hidden history of course. The world would be surprised if they dig deeper into history than just the basics of what ENGLISH PEOPLE SHOVE DOWN OUR THROATS AS HISTORY!!! you are so right, looking back now because as a kid pocahontas and john smith were my favorite disney couple and the one i liked most out of the ones in the “princess” line up or whatever something about the way their characters’ scenes were animated felt pretty raw and the emotional intensity hits that i was surprised when i found out mel gibson and irene bedard didn’t even record their lines in the same studio (as most actors also do when it comes to animated flicks, i know ming na wen and eddie murphy never met either when they did mulan) but yes in a fictional standpoint of this film their relationship elevates something to another level almost as if you were watching a period drama ala outlander-idk what it is but you can just feel and see it

This Disney movie is what got me hooked on American history and started my love for native American culture it is an amazing move and if they ruin it by doing a remake I will find they directory and brakes there hands so they can't ruin anymore movies

While some nitpick this movie its a movie that inspires and is entertaining. Even my child saw it and fell in love with it immediately. The songs, the art and the characters are great.
i actually always really liked this movie... 😅 pocahontas is one of my all time favorite disney princesses, next to mulan, belle, and elsa. obviously yes, the real pocahontas' life was nothing like this... much more tragic. but personally i see this as a fully fictional separate story that just uses historic names, or at least if you can't separate it from the real person, to think of this as an imagining of the type of life she should have had.. getting to become an adult and then experiencing love, preventing a war and becoming a hero to her people, her happy ending being getting to live in peace with her tribe. (i pretend the sequel doesn't exist. we all should collectively.) but back to the story itself, i actually really enjoyed that they didn't end up together. that's something that you pretty much never see in disney movies now, _especially_ disney princess movies, where it almost always ends with the princess getting together with someone and romantic love being the happily ever after. pocahontas as a character is courageous, curious/adventurous, and eager to bridge gaps between people of different backgrounds, she's the kind of person everyone should aspire to be. i honestly don't find the dialogue all that cringe, because it's about the same as every disney romance imo. romance dialogue in literally any kind of romantic story all sounds the same to me and equally as cringe lmao. plus the music is so iconic and timeless
ANYWAy really enjoyed the reaction (even though you're a hater lmao) and loved the editing (i always do, your editor is hilarious). if you haven't seen it i definitely recommend Mulan (the animated, NOT the live action). as much as i personally enjoy pocahontas (it's actually severely underrated imo), Mulan is definitely a far better movie as a whole. :)
Avatar is like Pocahontas is like Romeo and Juliet. Two star-crossed lovers trying to end the wars between their people. A rose by any other name would smell just as sweet. I loved this movie as a kid. Pocahontas was everything cool I could imagine; she had animal friends, a heart that wanted what it wanted, the trust and respect of her people, and a connection to nature that transcended natural laws. Plus, these songs were powerful to little me-- probably because Judy Kuhn can belt it. I've lived in Virginia for all my life, and took interest in Jamestown history early. Knowing that the real Pocahontas suffered immensely from the colonization of Virginia, I began thinking of this movie as Romeo and Juliet in Tidewater. It's not as fun as when I was young anymore.

Did anyone else read the American girl books? There was a girl named Josefina in one of the book series she was a Mexican girl who lived on a ranch. I remember I loved reading her story because I was mixed and Hispanic I always loved learning about Mexican ND Spanish heritage but some of my family was kind prejudice about it and I was discouraged from embracing that heritage into my life. I always hoped that they would make a disney princess kind of like Josefina. Now they do have movies like Encanto and Coco which I looove and my daughter loves them as well. But I still hope they decide to make a Hispanic princess so little girls of that decent can have a princess to look up to that looks like them.

Pocahontas is so UNDERRATED it’s insane. It’s a beautiful film about bringing two different cultures together with the help of love and nature. The animation is stunning and Pocahontas is the most beautiful animated princess ever. She’s my favorite Disney princess.
I know a lot of people think Avatar was just a copy of it, but to be honest I think it’s nothing like it, because Jake didn’t try to change her view point of her world or say she was lesser in any way, to me Jake found what he never had, a purpose, home, and place where he belongs. He didn’t just fall in love, he became one of them mentally and physically. And I also see it as a story for second chance at life, as he was a veteran and was left physically disabled. The scene where he runs again fro the first time always gets me. And Jake also took the time to learn the language, and fully love the people. To the point he “betrays his own race.” And also the fact that Jake lost his brother at the start of the film shows that Jake was at the start purely living to fill his brothers dreams, “one life ends, another begins.”

This was what is today's kid's Moana for me. I was obsessed with this movie as a child. Pocahontas, Esmerelda, and Jasmine were the only main female characters of color (I know Esmerelda was Romani, but I did not know what that was and thought she was black for the longest time) as a child. As a mixed child, I very much liked those three. It was also the only media at the time where I saw an interracial couple (at the time only 2 percent of marriages in the us were mixed according to my high school psychology textbook) and it had a good message how fear of the unknown can quickly turn ot hate and anger.

Irl, Pocahontas and Smith were friends and he taught her to speak English from a young age, they were such good friends that she saved him from being clubbed. They were never lovers and she ended up marrying another guy from Jamestown, when she was 19. She was honestly a very badass woman who helped stop conflict between the British and her tribe, being named after the treaty between them, a treaty that lasted many decades. She even ended up leaving her home to see England and was so respected that many members of royalty, including the king of England, called her princess (as she rightfully was), when she was making her way back home, she died of multiple illnesses. The movie is based on, smiths novel, he was very well known for lying in his life and stories.
The tenth anniversary version adds back a deleted scene "If I never knew you." Where Pocahontas sees John Smith before his execution and the reprise near the end. So it fleshes out the movie a little bit and makes it a little bit longer.
Movies are always gonna hit differently if you didn’t grow up watching it. Putting the movie in the VCR and watching it 100 times a day. This ilwill always be one of my favorite movies

There is a live action version of Pocahontas that came out in 2005 called "The New World" it's a historically accurate account of her story and Irene Bedard, the voice of Pocahontas, has a cameo as her mother in the film.
I'm not native myself, but it seems some reasons you don't see Pocahontas featured as much along with other Princesses is because of the backlash this movie has received, both when it came out and in recent years. TBH I think their main mistake with this film was using real people who existed in history and making a love story that (from my understanding) did not exist rather than making original characters. I know some people can also be offended by the words used, but the sad fact is that was a part of the past. These things aren't supposed to make you comfortable.
I hope they will come out with another movie to represent native people in the coming years, and maybe make an original story or take inspiration from folklore/fairytales. If I've learned anything about all the different, vast and beautiful cultures, it's that they all have their own sort of folklore/fairytales. I do at least like to hear that some natives enjoy this movie and felt seen/represented even with it's many historical inaccuracies related to the characters.
Except for Pocahontas 2. That movie was just bad, but so were most of the nostalgic "straight to DVD/VCR" sequels.
One of my late mom's favorite movies, she has the poster in a frame, dolls and some toys. We are Paiute on her side and choctaw on my dad's, but she don't let that get in the way of her love for the movie, I'd tell her the real history of what happened but she'd just say it's a movie, a fantasy and it was cool to see a native Disney princess. Despite the history, I enjoy it, the art style is beautiful, the shenanigans between Miko, Flick and Percy always get a laugh out of me and it has Mad Max and Batman in it!
I think this movie achieved something people don’t realise. It did what it set out to do, which was create a child friendly fairytale based loosely from real events. But the subsequent love for the movie as well as conversations and research about the true history of Pocahontas is a great achievement in highlighting the Native American community imo. It also made many Native American children, who were and are underrepresented in mainstream media culture, feel great.
Consider that hardly anyone would be talking about or interested in the history behind this story if it weren’t for the movie.
I get it didn't age well but the movie is about trying to bring everyone together and I personally love it for what it is even if it didn't age well
This movie may be historically inaccurate, but everything about it besides that is incredible, in my opinion. The art is absolutely gorgeous, no question about that. The music as well is incredible, "Colors of the Wind" still makes me tear up. And the themes of choosing your own path and overcoming ignorance to understand another people is universal and timeless.
I'm not sure if it's because I grew up with this as a little girl, but I absolutely loved the dialogue in this movie as well and I loved the romance aspect of it. I grew up with this movie as a kid, so I really didn't understand the real life history and I can probably see if I did I may not have liked it as much, but as it stands I adored this movie and still do to this day.
I think the reason this probably has low scores on Rotten Tomatoes is because of the historical inaccuracies, but that aside, a lot of people still love it. To add to that, Disney had a lot of input from Native Americans when working on this movie and pretty much all the voice actors for Pocahontas and her village are all Native as well, so there's a decent sense of authenticity.
I was quite sad that you didn't like it and were getting tired of it halfway through, but I also know we're all entitled to our own opinions. I've seen some of your other videos and I've enjoyed most of the other videos I've seen, so keep up the good work and I wish you well.
The fact that there wasn't a battle scene is the whole point of the movie. It was never meant to be a history lesson. They wanted to capture the spirit of Pocahontas and portray the richness and beauty of Native cultures. Many Native actors were cast to voice characters. They had a group of Native people from several tribes that they consulted with to try and portray Native peoples as accurately as possible (though obviously, different tribes have very distinct cultures, so it's never going to be "perfect"). When we are introduced to the Powhatan people in the film, there is a distinctly positive tone and we are shown many aspects of their culture through those first shots. We're not seeing them through the eyes of the British or Smith, we are seeing them with a fresh, unbiased view.
The lyrics to "Savages" were meant to be horrible in order to exhibit exactly how disgusting racism is. In the 80s/90s Disney didn't shy away from darker subject matter. From what I have seen, I don't think there is another movie out there for children that attempts to teach the horrors of blind racism this way. You actually see true, real-life consequences of acting on prejudices and fear (i.e. Kocoum dying & Smith getting shot). Sadly these things are still happening today, and our society is still very much flawed. Just because something bad is said or shown in a movie/show (like the song "Savages") doesn't mean the creators are celebrating it. They clearly didn't see the point in beating around the bush and showed race-based hatred for what it is. It's not pretty, it's not nice, and it's certainly not going to have pretty or nice lyrics (because that's not what we see/experience in real life).
We can't know what tolerance & acceptance look like without being shown what the opposite looks like. The song writers weren't espousing their own hatred & racism by writing that song. They were creating a piece that shows ignorance and fear on both sides and what leaning into those emotions can lead to (i.e. violence/ war/ death). In that song Pocahontas is the bridge between the two sides due to her willingness to understand them both; something all people should learn to do.
So many choose to ignore all the themes of this movie and criticize it for historical inaccuracy & offensive song lyrics. We all know this is not an accurate portrayal of Pocahontas, John Smith, or the British colonizing Virginia/ completely destroying the land & Native peoples (which they acknowledge, albeit lightly, in the film). That was never the intention behind creating this movie. I grew up in Virginia Beach and we visited "Historical Jamestown" many times on school trips. There are some employees who are descendants of the Powhatans that educate visitors on both the good & bad aspects of their history. I knew the real story of Pocahontas at a young age, and before I ever saw the movie. As a child I was able to separate the intention of the film and its themes from the real-life atrocities that happened. The way that so many people, especially adults, in this day and age don't seem to be capable (or more likely, willing) to do so is saddening. We could all benefit from embracing the message this movie intended to deliver; I know I did.

I real life and the sequel, Pocahontas didn't get to marry John Smith but with a man called John Rolfe. They would have a son Thomas Rolfe and she would die while travelling back to Virginia (while unknown it could have been pneumonia, smallpox, tuberculosis, hemorrhagic dysentery, also known as "the Bloody flux", or poisoning). Her decendant was Edith Bollin Wilson who was the first lady of U.S. President Woodrow Wilson in 1915. She passed away in 1961 and was survived by one child. It's unknown if she had any grandchildren or great-granchildren.

This movie is problematic for many reasons. It's true that Pocahontas saved John Smith's life, but it is a very romanticized version of what really happened. In real life Pocahontas was a child, then she was married off to John Rolfe and then moved to England and changed her name to Rebecca. How much of that she did willingly is heavily debated.
I choose to seperate it rom reality. It is an original story with similar names. Like the Greatest Showman. Almost nothing is correct so why compare? I accept what happened in reality and enjoy this movie as its own thing. I refuse to watch the second pocahontas again since it seems people's cry for the inaccuracy made them try to correct it a bit and soured the ability to seperate the two.
Can you see the real message of that movie? The love between two people that come fron two different worlds, and how love can be strong that any battle. How two nations are joined by the power of love. That's beautiful. Pocahontas is one of my favourites princess from my childhood. People should watch this movie with an open mind and an open heart...
The problem isnt that its a bad movie... the peoblem is it romanticize Pocahontas's suffering... like barely anything happen like this movie other than the big lines... like John Smith really came to America, Pocahotnas and him really stopped a war between conquerors and natives but thats basically all that is true...

Colors of the wind probably one of the best Disney songs ever. For me, Pocahontas was a movie that helped me cope moving to another country as a child. Mom was single and serving the Navy, this movie comforted me being alone on many levels. My mom bought me all the dolls, the stickers, everything for Pocahontas. She also waited a few years to teach me the actual story, but the Disney version was just a comfort for me. Honestly, whichever disney movie that was current in that time would've filled the space, but it happened to be this one.
I know it was annoying and hasn’t aged well but, they had to water it down with flowery stuff and romance cause if they tackled the convo head on, it definitely would’ve stirred up something they didn’t want to deal with.

I liked this one as a kid, but as an adult… 😐 Like you said, the second half is trash, but also the everything that screams a bunch of white people who don’t know the history wrote it. Weirdly, Pocahontas 2 does a better job of accurately portraying some of what happened to her.
Pocahontas was actually kidnapped at around 15 and forced to convert to Christianity, changing her name to Rebecca afterwards. At 17 she was married to one of the colonizers, John Rolfe, and gave birth to his son at 18. After that, she was paraded around English society as a “civilized savage” in order to get more interest in Jamestown. She died at either 20 or 21 of unknown causes, though it’s believed to have been smallpox that killed her. There is a story about her saving the life of a man named John Smith when she was around 12 or 13, but it is widely believed to have been falsified by him. There was, however, proof that she had befriended him and brought food to the settlement of Jamestown until John Smith had returned to England following an injury from a gunpowder explosion.
John Smith was a notorious liar and used the princess rescuing him story other times. I believe she was 8 or 9 when her father took her to the village.

Squanto: a warrior's tale is a very good movie about a different historical figure from the native tribes during this time frame. Tisquantum had a very similar historical role to Pocahontas except that he wasn't a child that became romanticized by Disney

I don't actually think she's speaking English, it was some sort of magic where she can understand him and him her, but the English is just for the viewers. At least I think that was it.
Or there are moments where some of the conversation seems like they are struggling so maybe they don't actually understand each other, they used body language to get through conversation but it's more of a metaphor and they just made it English for the viewers.
This is a year old reaction but I got something interesting some people overlook about Savages.
Notice the lighting on all the characters. The settlers, are all lit up in a way they makes THEM red-skinned, which at the time is the racial term for an Indigenous persons.
While the Indigenous peoples are lit in a way that makes them "pale" like the "pale-face is a demon"
You definitely wouldn't need to censor that word, that is what they used to call them, just is what it is, no need to censor history, important to remind ourselves.
