There are few scenarios worse than "phantom shifting" when you are out of the saddle, dancing on the pedals. I now know what different factors cause unwanted shifting. I love the internet. Thanks.
Great video! I have a bike that was locked up outside in the elements for a long time without use (thanks a little to COVID and a bit to the weather). I immediately relubricated the chain but found it skipping. The cassette , derailer and chain seems to still be good. I'm now under the assumption that the chain links are stiff (due to being out in the elements for so long). I used some oil to continue cleaning them. Otherwise, I might just replace the chain. Thanks for the help and tips!
You should get a new chain and pay to get it placed on. I'm telling you no amount of money saved is worth attempting to do the chain all alone if you deal with links. You can follow the instructions all you want you won't get nowhere and with some skill and determination you might take a few links off the chain but you will never be able to put the chain back together without an actual machine or taking the bike to a shop where they can do it by machine
Excellent video. My well used bike was working fine, but I thought it might be time for a new chain. The bike mechanic told me the chain was so worn I would have to replace the sprockets..but I didn’t believe him. They looked okay to me. But after fitting the chain, I literally could not move the bike, as the chain slipped freely over all sprockets under any load. Amazing! As the bike is old, I have refitted the old chain and everything is back to normal. No skipping except on the smallest rear cog.

Mine skips on the highest 3 gears (3 smallest ones at the back). 7, 8, and 9. It's a brand new 1500€ bike too. 2 week old, so it shouldn't be wear and tear. I suspect the problem stem from that time when I biked home from the bike shop, obviously excited with a big smile, I hit the tram tracks and rolled over on my back. No real medical issue, more so my pride, but that probably bent something on my bike somewhere. Then again, the problem with that theory is that the gears didn't start to jump until several days later while on a cross country trip with lots of luggage in a bike cart/trailer. Now it jumps while going straight on flat ground with hardly any pressure at max speed. That was too much information, but the point is thank you. You've at least helped me narrow down the issue considerably. :) Cheers from Norway
ABSOLUTE MATE. I’ve had this issue 4 times over the last 6 months and I usually just take my bike into a REI to get it fixed for $15 but I guess the rear derailleur was unaligned. Adjusting it fixed it perfectly. Cheers mate.
Thank you! Here I was trying all sorts of ways to make the slipping/skipping go away and then I come on here to see it can be as easy as simply turning the adjuster. 3 simple turns and its fixed.
Romans biggest fan my issue was gunk between the gears. it was an 11 tooth so I guess the small amount of gunk was thick enough to push the chain high enough so it doesn't have good contact
On line with frame flex shifting issues, I have found that worn bushings or bearings on full suspension bikes can be a serious issue. So, if you have a F/S and it is still jumping or ghost shifting after going thru all the common fixes, check for suspension wobble.
Those binding chain links can be a real 'gotchya' situation. I spent hours trying to dial in the derailleur before noticing the bump from two binding links as the chain passed through the jockey wheels - unstuck those links, and boom, everything ran perfect. What a lesson that was.... and that was with a new chain as well, surprisingly.
Perfect! Helped me solve my issue in less than 5 minutes and made me look like a champion in front of my girl told had to rebuild the trans on it for her lol thanks again
Nice video. One other thing that can suddenly cause bad shifting on a bike that has been shifting fine for a while is a worn (even busting) cable or bad housing. Sometimes hard to see if the cable strands are starting to bust up inside the shifter.
This is the best video I've ever watched. So many different things to check and I feel like I learned more about bikes. Subscribed and will return with an update!!
Don’t know shit about bikes with gears and this helped me fix my wife’s bike. The detailed thing was bent. Just flexed it over a little and boom. Know more chain pop/jump
I had a REALLY bad bike crash and my chain popped off how should i put it on and is there a gear I need to shift the bike to when i put it on thanks from- a not-so good biker
i take it uve done this 8 months later? if not just pop the bike upside down and pull the derailer forward and hook the chain back on to any gear it usually is the right one then begin peddling the bike with ur hand and its done
@rjthebikeguy I’m so confused! My bike is brand new, straight out of the box. Gears were pre-assembled, I don’t see a bend or the gears being misaligned. Chain doesn’t look worn. I don’t know what to do!

Just cleaned up my sister in law's old mountain bike and put a new chain on an old Shimano 7-speed cassette. Jumping like crazy on the three smallest sprockets. Was thinking I might have an incompatible chain ( KMC Z50 ) but worn sprockets sounds like the real cause. She always rides the middle chain ring on the small sprockets. Need to see if I have another 7 speed in the collection ( think they are all 8 though ).
I also have a Shimano 7 shifter that shifts by itself gear 1 and 2 work great but when I shift to the 3rd gear it starts jumping to the 6th gear and back to the 4th and then to the 7th it's crazy
Thank you so much you saved my behind! My chain popped as I was going home and I had no one to help me, so I had to fix it myself. Because of you video I was able to get home safely:))
Just put a new chain on and it's skipping like crazy. I'll look at the derailleur as it's also trying to shift up randomly. But the rear cassette definitely needs swapping out in any event and probably the front sprockets too!
I love all your videos. Definitely the most useful and clear instructions out of all the bike maintenance videos I've watched. Thanks for all your uploads. I've saved so much time, money, and headaches thanks to you.
Does the wobbling of the wheel at the rear is also another reason why the chain is jumping up? This only happens to my bike when I shift to the smallest gear. I'll appreciate any advise on this. Thanks for the video!!!
I know this video is old, but just in case this happens to help someone out - I had the chain keep jumping gears without me getting anywhere near the gear levers. I took it to 4 different repairs and they: 1.) Replaced my chain 2.) replaced a part that I don't know how to translate - maybe the bearings that fit through the back wheel? 3.) shortened the chain by 1 link even after the first repair shop charged 50 bucks for the first 2 fixes, probably getting it right. The logic was that the chain might be a bit loose and that's why it jumped. 4.) Adjusted the rear derailleur 5.) a couple other things that I can't remember At the end of the day, the problem persisted and it made me hate riding my bike, because during riding, the chain would just skip gears, the pedal would lose resistance and my leg would push through unexpectedly and violently, hurting my knee badly sometimes. Took it to one last guy before giving up on the whole bike, and all he did was replace all the cables and cable housings, and it's been working for months on end without a single hitch now. Hope it helps someone!
Just to add a statement, because I don't wanna give misguided information: I know the guy who actually fixed the bike's problem ALSO adjusted the rear derailleur (I quote him that he only adjusted it "a little bit"). That means that it could've been the reason on its own the entire time, and that the first person adjusting it didn't tune it perfectly maybe. I don't know how big of a role the changing of the cables and cable housings made, but I hope it's also a valid contender for the list of possible causes for this particular problem. Anyway, best of luck to anyone dealing with this! Thank you RJ for helping everyone with your wealth of knowledge and experience!
RJ, First, thank you for all of the great videos! I’ve been able to get into maintaining my bike w/ them! Second,, I’m a newbie so apologies if my terminology is inaccurate. Finally, having an issue post-overhaul of my 1991/1992 Bridgestone MB-4. The drivetrain is slipping (forward, not across gears) in select gear combinations when solid amount of pressure is applied pedaling, especially uphill (i.e. middle front gear w/ second smallest rear gear). Some gear combinations seem ok. Wasn't able to figure out cause from this video. Replaced original chain with KMC Z51 Bicycle Chain (6 & 7 Speed , 1/2 x 3/32-Inch). Front crankset/chainrings are original: 24, 36, 46T Original cassette was: Shimano 7 speed cassette ((Shimano CS-HG30-I am). 11, 13, 15, 18, 21, 24, 30T. They no longer make 11-30T. Replacement cassette is: Shimano CS-HG50 7-Speed Cassettes (13-15-17-20-23-26-30T) I quadruple checked chain length/links against the original and new is same number of links but a tad bit shorter due to stretch in 25yr old chain. Could it be that I put the front chainrings on backwards during overhaul? Do I have a chain/cassette/crankset mis-match? Thanks in advance! Regards, Jeff
I put a new chain, new free wheel, new derailer, adjusted the derailer a bunch. Ensured (with the proper tool) the hanger is straight. 7th gear still slips. Not into other gears. Doesn't slip off. Just like hiccups/slips usually under torque. Links are good. Bike shops can't figure it out. Ugh. It's a solid aluminum Nishiki frame, no suspension.
my latest "slipping" gears seems 100% due to my "cruising" cog in cassette being so worn out the teeth are visibly crooked lol. I am thinking just replacing that cog as its not bolted on to the spider ^^
My bike has been skipping and jumping for a while now! Just checked my chain and found one of my links was twisted. Straightened it with 2 pairs of vice grips, oiled it up, adjusted my derailer. Bike works almost like new now! Thanks a lot!! (I have subscribed)
Hi, I have a 7 speed bike with shimano tourney groupset and Im buying a new 7 speed freewheel from shimano that has a different cog count compared to my old freewheel. Will that old derailleur still work? thanks
RJ The Bike Guy sry about it. my old 7 speed wheel got all rusty and stuff so I am replacing it. but the new one i got looks quite different compared to the old one the largest cog looks bigger than the one on my old freewheel. Can I still use the same derailleur and shifter?
I have a Campagnolo nuovo rear derailleur and replaced the worn jockey wheels with Shimano. The bottom wheel skips and won't grab the chain and chain gets stuck on smallest gear. This video is very helpful thank you!
THANK YOU! I’ve been trying to figure out whats wrong with my chain since last summer but I could never get a proper explanation. This video helped me out a lot 🙌🏾
Thanks RJ - very informative! Love that Fuji, reminds me of my first "real" bike, a Fuji Royale, even to the color. What a great bike - wish I still had it. Anyway, I'm having shifting problems with my current Trek 7200 so I'll use your suggestions to try to remedy.
Being a big guy #250+, I have a lightweight MTB and I think this is the problem I have, seated or not. Great video running through a wide range of possibles. I have changed chainrings, and adjusted, but still I get a skip back and on to the same gear. Hmmm, I like my lightweight bike and I cannot ride it at full speed as that is the only time it happens, on the 3rd and 7th top gears.
Really useful video, thanks for posting. I have a chain slip issue, this always comes up when I am pressing down on the pedals, such as when starting to ride when stationery, this also occurs when I am riding up a steep incline, even though I gear down and select the low gear, the chain slips when pressing down. The slip does not occur in any other condition
The drive train components all wear together. Replacing just the chain may not fix the problem. As the front chain rings are alloy, they wear more than the steel rear cogs. On my over 30 year old bike, when I replaced the chain, it slipped worse than before. On inspection, I replaced the front chain rings, and it was better, but the rear freewheel was still slipping. Got a new freewheel and all was copacetic. Moral: save time and frustration and just replace all of them.
Very useful, but what about the chain slipping on the chain wheels? I replaced the chain and freewheel/gears on my MTB, but chain still slipped, but not as badly. Replacing the chain set sorted the problem. The chain slipped on the middle chain ring, but not the largest, presumably because It was torqued less. Is chain slip less likely to be caused by a worn chain wheel than a gear on the freewheel?
My new chain slipped with the original freewheel and middle chainwheel, on a front triple crankset. The middle is the one that I had used most. The large (high speed) and granny (low speed) were used less: they were still operable, but the middle was pretty bad when I inspected it closely. It's an aluminum alloy, softer than steel. The cogs on the freewheel are steel and still have their factory profile. So I replaced the middle chainwheel and the problem went away. The exact same thing happened with a friend's bike, and he replaced the middle chainring also. So you really have to check all three areas: freewheel, chain, and chainrings. A chain and the cogs wear together, so sometimes a new chain won't work well because it doesn't mesh correctly with the old cogs.
I thought I knew a good deal about bikes until I watched this video.. Learned some new things :) Great video sir, very informative & explained extremely well!

Great video! I'm trying to repair my wife's E-bike fitted with a Shimano Deore, 10spd cassette with KMC X10eT chain. She has over 3,000 miles on it and the chain had a 1/16th in stretch, so we just installed a brand new chain (same KMC as new bike). Unfortunately, the new chain jumps under effort, and any adjustments to the derailleur did not help. 👉Is it possible that, in this case, the cassette would also need replacement?

@@RJTheBikeGuy Awesome... Gonna have a look later. It's only under torque it happens. Once on the bike stand no problem. Thanks so much for replying dude!
question, I just bought a bike😀, was riding, braked, brakes work a little too well lol, and I ate it with the bike and the chain fell off... Its a 7 gear bike, idk if thats right, anyways, I put the chain on the second to smallest cog, and then on the smallest, is that correct, if I have my bike on number 7??
I replaced my chain and now have problems with skipping. The freewheel teeth don't look particularly worn and it happens in most gears. Do some of the other problems you showed sometimes act just like a worn freewheel cog? I can't climb a hill and even firm pressure starting from a stop will cause a skip. It shifts fairly well, but this accushift has never been perfect. Thanks for the video.
I covered the most common issues int he video. Since you just replaced the chain and issues started, then I am guessing a worn freewheel/cassette. But go through the video
@@RJTheBikeGuy So, I replaced the derailleur cable, set everything up from scratch, and it still skipped. More testing showed it skipped on cogs 2, 3, 4 but not 1, 5, 6, 7 and skips regardless of the front chainring. I found a Winner Pro 12x28 down at the bottom of my bike parts mulch box, spun it on and voila! Fixed. I guess I killed this thing climbing hills rather than in the flats. So stupid. I should have checked my chain sooner. Thanks for your help and video. One suggestion for anyone who changes a freewheel: Put a heavy grease on the hub threads.
I had similar issue, replaced old 8 speed chain with new one but the new one was slipping. The reason old was replaced because it visibly extended because of large play of every link. The bike is relatively new (about 1.5 year) but used every day or total of about 3500km. The cogs looks ok as well as derailleur, but the crank cog is not (teeth have visible damages similar to what you described damaged rear cogs). Interestingly the old chain (no slip) although not as good as it was on new bike

‘Just wanted to go faster, but I keep nearly dying every time I try to pedal harder..’ it’s truly terrifying.
@@flyinglego34 truerer words have never been said
The entire reason I’m on this video 😂
My leg sometimes flew off from my pedal when it skips chain.
Oh my god yes
@@David-ty5jk I don't fancy the job either.
Thanks for helping us all out. Frustrasting when you just want to go out and RIDE and you have clicking and autoshifting...

Cheers from Norway
Could just be cables settling in. If it's a brand new bike, take it back to the shop and have them fix it.
@@RJTheBikeGuy I'll do that tomorrow.
@@willek1335 And what was the problem?
ABSOLUTE MATE.
I’ve had this issue 4 times over the last 6 months and I usually just take my bike into a REI to get it fixed for $15 but I guess the rear derailleur was unaligned.
Adjusting it fixed it perfectly. Cheers mate.
Thank you! Here I was trying all sorts of ways to make the slipping/skipping go away and then I come on here to see it can be as easy as simply turning the adjuster. 3 simple turns and its fixed.
Excellent
Three of my bicycles have the same issue but hadn't an idea as to why,, now they won't bother me no more as you stated nicely
my chain always skips right when i stand up... wish i could see it happen so i could figure it out.
me too
gamer3928 same
Romans biggest fan my issue was gunk between the gears. it was an 11 tooth so I guess the small amount of gunk was thick enough to push the chain high enough so it doesn't have good contact
Most likely causes, worn chain, worn, cogs, misadjustment, maybe bent derailleur/hanger. It's all in the video.
gamer3928 how should I clean it?
I save $1100 a month/$13,200 a year by riding my bike to work. These videos are priceless to keep that bike moving.
This is absolutely perfect for issues I've been having lately, keep having to index the gears every day or other day.
My chain was absolutely irritated me. A thousand thanks for helping me fix that chain skipping issue! God bless!!!👍🏻
What should I do because every time I go to the 5th gear it goes to the 6th after 10 seconds?
Adjust the derailleur and clean the sprockets
I'd just do what he said or tune it where the two screws are

Bro, you are a legend. I was seconds away from going to a bike shop. Getting a sub for sure!
If the hub is wobbling, overhaul it. If the rim is wobbling true the wheel.
Tried the first thing in the video and it just fixed my bike, now I can finally go in first gear up hills😅
I know this video is old, but just in case this happens to help someone out - I had the chain keep jumping gears without me getting anywhere near the gear levers. I took it to 4 different repairs and they:
1.) Replaced my chain
2.) replaced a part that I don't know how to translate - maybe the bearings that fit through the back wheel?
3.) shortened the chain by 1 link even after the first repair shop charged 50 bucks for the first 2 fixes, probably getting it right. The logic was that the chain might be a bit loose and that's why it jumped.
4.) Adjusted the rear derailleur
5.) a couple other things that I can't remember
At the end of the day, the problem persisted and it made me hate riding my bike, because during riding, the chain would just skip gears, the pedal would lose resistance and my leg would push through unexpectedly and violently, hurting my knee badly sometimes.
Took it to one last guy before giving up on the whole bike, and all he did was replace all the cables and cable housings, and it's been working for months on end without a single hitch now.
Hope it helps someone!
Just to add a statement, because I don't wanna give misguided information:
I know the guy who actually fixed the bike's problem ALSO adjusted the rear derailleur (I quote him that he only adjusted it "a little bit").
Thanks. The first two minutes was enough for me to adjust my bike and stop the skipping in all but the highest gear.
RJ,
First, thank you for all of the great videos!
Front crankset/chainrings are original: 24, 36, 46T
Original cassette was: Shimano 7 speed cassette ((Shimano CS-HG30-I am). 11, 13, 15, 18, 21, 24, 30T. They no longer make 11-30T.
Replacement cassette is: Shimano CS-HG50 7-Speed Cassettes (13-15-17-20-23-26-30T)
I quadruple checked chain length/links against the original and new is same number of links but a tad bit shorter due to stretch in 25yr old chain.
Could it be that I put the front chainrings on backwards during overhaul? Do I have a chain/cassette/crankset mis-match?
Thanks in advance!
Regards,
Jeff
I can't tell you anything without working on the bike directly. It is likely something in the video. Maybe adjustment or worn cogs or something.

Thanks for outlining most if not all of the reasons a chain might slip. Now I just need to figure out which one applies to my bike.
Thank you so much RJ! This video was really helpful, especially when my chain popped out when I was a few miles from home.
I would suggest replacing the chain. KMC makes some great chains, many for $10-15. Check Amazon.

RJ The Bike Guy sry about it. my old 7 speed wheel got all rusty and stuff so I am replacing it. but the new one i got looks quite different compared to the old one the largest cog looks bigger than the one on my old freewheel. Can I still use the same derailleur and shifter?

Being a big guy #250+, I have a lightweight MTB and I think this is the problem I have, seated or not. Great video running through a wide range of possibles. I have changed chainrings, and adjusted, but still I get a skip back and on to the same gear. Hmmm, I like my lightweight bike and I cannot ride it at full speed as that is the only time it happens, on the 3rd and 7th top gears.
I can't tell you without working on the bike. I would basically go through the steps shown in the video myself.
I took my derailer off. That fiixed that.

Thanks for the first tip, my gear was unaligned fixed it all up works perfectly again.
Thank you. I noticed one of my chain links were stuck together.
@@reecenewton3097 quite true. I replaced the chain and the cassette and now it's perfect
Great Video, I had shifting issues with my chain going into different gears. Problem solved. Thank you! 😊 From England 🏴
Dude you nailed it! Thanks man you just saved me a bike shop bill

She has over 3,000 miles on it and the chain had a 1/16th in stretch, so we just installed a brand new chain (same KMC as new bike). Its a 7 gear bike, idk if thats right, anyways, I put the chain on the second to smallest cog, and then on the smallest, is that correct, if I have my bike on number 7??
Yes
Interestingly the old chain (no slip) although not as good as it was on new bike
think i will now go get my bike back out the river now i know how to fix it.
