  • We have seen so many different fans on the fan showdown it boggles the mind, however just when you think you have seen every single fan in the known universe the fan showdown throws you a new one. Today I test 4 fans that are unlike any we have seen before. Let’s continue our journey to find the coolest fan design on the planet.

    8:24 The SWAG fan is actually pretty clever - can see the smoke going through the slits in the blades - and the air flow out the back is impressive

    • @ALifeOfWine
      @ALifeOfWine 3 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      It somehow manages to keep the airflow central rather than dispersing it away from the fan. Don't know if that's because of the slits or if it would still do that without them though.
      I feel like there's finally been a concept that's proven itself to the point that it needs further iterations.

    • @Thelothuo
      @Thelothuo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      man i wish i'd been keeping up with this series earlier
      The SWAG's slits to let a small amount of air through to the upper side of the airfoil are not just aesthetic, but necessary in its design.
      In aircraft, these intentional leaks are used to prevent stalling when the plane's angle of attack is too great, which drastically reduces lift while drastically increasing drag. In this fan, introducing these leaks allows for a far more aggressive blade angle without stalling, which would drastically decrease flow rate and speed. From the side shot of the SWAG at 3:40, it has quite an extreme blade angle indeed!
      Keeping the flow central is mostly something else though. Because fans rotate, air passing through them gets thrown away from the center as it is pushed through the fan due to centrifugal acceleration. Simply put, the air touching the fan gets swung away from the middle. This effect is generally not desired since air moving away from the center means energy is being wasted on accelerating air away from the center and since it means less airflow at whatever the fan is pointing at.
      Fans usually compensate for this by giving each blade a reverse sweep, such that the curve of the blade as viewed head-on scoops air back toward the center like a scythe. Even the SWAG has a small sweep like this. The slits however _may_ also help a little bit by interrupting this axial flow away from the center, creating a trap on the bottom side that air falls into and a wall of leaking air on top that blocks air from crossing the slit.

    The ptoblem with the mono is that it isn't dynamically ballanced. If you have a stick with a small weight far out on the left side and a bigger weight on the right side near the center, it will be ballanced when still. But when you spin it, the small weight moves a lot faster and the balance moves to the left side. Static ballancing is better than none, but dynamic is the only way you can achieve a perfect balance.

    One reason people have so much trouble with a monoblade is they need to take into account the force the blade is exerting on the air and the greater friction the blade side has with the air. I might suggest adding tiny horizontal fins that would create drag equivalent to the fan blade
    It doesn't matter how perfect the center of mass is if there is a significant force acting unevenly on the fan.

I put the playback speed on slow to watch the movement in front and as the smoke passes through the fan and is expelled. Very interesting how the different fan styles move the air through and then discharge in different patterns.
    Someone suggested a scaled background so we could determine speeds. That is a great idea!!

      Shhh. He doesn't need yet ANOTHER specialized tool.
      Joking aside, most of his parts need the robustness of metal and wood, so plastic is probably a no go. Maybe when technology improves in 5 years plastic/resin might be more viable.

      @@r3dp9 Agreed. He is using plastic on the new marble divider though. He already developed the cad skills necessary for the job, I think he would come up with something interesting for the marble funnels.

    If you were able to do some high speed recording for slow motion footage, that would be very interesting. Would love to see some ultra slow motion of the smoke test, and that RFB spooling up.

    Really liking that side view, can see the airflow out the back. Hmm dispersion cone? The mono had two patterns to it, guess the counterweight was pushing air too.

    it's easy to balance stuff, put it sideways, let the heavy side fall, remove a tiny bit of material and then put the heavy side to the left or right, if it falls slower, keep removing material (or in fact adding material to the other side)

    The idea behind the vents in the blades is to reduce vortices which would reduce airfoil efficiency but that is typically for low air speed over the wings or high angle of attack. There are also vortices induced over the surface at high air speeds but I don't have the information on had at the moment.

    Dude we often can't tell which fan is which during the smoke test without going back and rewatching to see what each one was called (i generally don't remember cos i don't care what they're called), can you have a pic of what the fan is during or something

      Agreed, once they’re already spinning as shown, they all blur together: seems like watching TV with all the people hiding their mouths while speaking, with no subtitles, on mute. Well, you know they’re speaking, but what?

    the side view was indeed a nice idea. the shark teeth seemed to have a bad airflow for cooling but really effective at spreading and filling the space which could make it useful for the PC case's intake fans

    You should have a little mount for the fans. I’m pretty sure you holding down the moon helped a lot in reducing noise. A surprising amount of noise from a fan comes from the material vibrating again whatever it’s attached to so if you could maybe reduce the vibrations you could get a more accurate noise readout?

    That progressive airfoil really helped deliver more static pressure I bet. It looked really efficient in the smoke test. That side view made it immediately apparent which fans were spending most of their energy pushing air straight out the back of the fan, and how many were wasting most of their energy spinning the air around so it flies out to the side as soon as the fan isn't containing it. I'm betting low helicity and high velocity equates to better performance in a radiator cooling test since the air encounters the least resistance travelling in a straight line perpendicular to the radiator, so the more the fan is making air move that way, the better it will do.

    It would be interesting if you fixed the Fan to an clear acrylic sheet with a cutout for the smoke test. That way you dont have anything flowing back or bypassing the fan, and would see just what the fan does. I think 4-5 Inches around the fan would be enough to stop anything from bypassing or flowing back to the intake side. Great channel btw, I love your content.

    The side view really shows which fan moves air out the back.
    And to contrast, the Monoe had a weird pulsing, like the speed need to be optimized for the blade configuration.

    Although the WID didn't do very well, I think it's a cool idea. I'd like to see the design of the WID be refined and expanded upon. For example, static pressure blades acting as the stabilizers from the center to the outer ring and make the blades on the ring a series of different shapes and sizes to draw in more airflow from all directions. Maybe they can get in contact with Jimmy and combined it with the SWAG?

    I have a suggestion for your next fan showdown, could we get some shots of the fan facing downwards blowing upwards and you shooting the smoke under it to see its sucking power?
    Currently with the smoke having initial velocity towards the fan its a little bit harder to see how much air the fan is actually moving vs the air that was already moving to begin with.

    There were probably 1000's of people that did comment about the frequency spectral analysis...... use a music program (daw) and buy the spectral analyser. When u record the input wave file, it will show you each frequency and the amplitude of each one. From there you can dice and slice, however to see the read out, will change the game 😁. Thank you for reading, and considering others and my suggestions.
    P.s the side view of the smoke WORKS..... However, shooting from above (birds eye), infront on slight angle, from the side and from the back on an angle....few cheap go pros.....on screen the angles in multi view.
    This episode showed you are willing to take this to the next level.
    I am excited 👍💯
