Just when I thought ive seen it all when it comes to inspiration behind fan designs something new pops up. Taking inspiration from nature is nothing new on the fan showdown, however this particular animal isn’t what you normally think of when you think aerodynamics, but it just might work.

A few years back there was some fans made that used something called TMD or Tip Magnetic Drive. The idea was to relocate the motor from the hub to the circumference of the fan. There was a small rare earth magnet embedded in the tip of each fan blade and along the rim of the fan there were small electro magnets that were controlled by the drive electronics. This way there were no need for a large hub in the center of the fan. Theoretically that would mean that there would be more open space for air to move through. In practice it doesn't make quite as much of a difference as you may at first think. First of all the closer to the hub of the fan you get the lower the blade speed will be, and the less air the fan blade in that area can move. But all is not lost. The high air flow streams around the outer parts of the fan blades will pull adjacent masses of air and you end up with a lot of airflow through the middle of the fan even though the fan blades are really ineffective here.
Now this isn't exactly what you were asking for as these TMD fans still have a hub, though it is very much smaller than in a traditional fan. But if you are to even start looking at a design using a outer rim bearing of some kind the TMD is what will be needed to drive this.
A hub less design isn't really an easy thing to make efficient as there are way to much drag with a bearing race that large. But if you can live with a tiny hub a TMD fan is pretty close to a hub less design.
Now it's been quite some time since I saw a TMD fan and have no idea if there are any that are currently in production, but if they are I bet someone will be happy to tell us about them.

@@blahorgaslisk7763 Ever heard of maglev or maglock. Bearings, thats very funny. I have an air mover here, 350cfm, no blades, no fins, zero moving parts.

    • @blahorgaslisk7763
      @blahorgaslisk7763 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@snakezdewiggle6084 Mag lev bearings are nothing new. They've been used in server class fans for a long time. In theory they have next to no friction and are going to last a very long time, or at least until the magnets loose enough of their magnetic field that they can no longer suspend the shaft.
In practice they are not contact free when in rest, so there will be some wear as the shaft spins up before the magnetic fields "levitates" the shaft.
Also dust buildup on the fan blades can easily unbalance the fan enough that the magnetic field collapses causing the shaft to grind on the sleeve.
Now that fan less air mover is kind of interesting. I've only seen two kinds of fan less "fans" and only one of them are truly fan less. Dyson made a lot of noise about having one, and if you just see it quickly and not to close up it really appears to have no moving parts. Looking a bit closer you discover that there is a fan inside the foot of the fan. This blows air up and into the vertical ring mounted on top. In the ring there is a slit running all the way around that allows air to escape at a 90 degree angle to the rings orientation. This air flow will pull surrounding air with it using the Venturi effect, increasing the volume of air far above what the tiny fan in the foot can move.
The other kind of fan less "fan" uses electrostatic charge and two parallel grills. By applying a charge between the grills air will be drawn through them.
I've never worked with these so I don't know a lot about them, but from what I remember it's hard to get really high airspeed or static pressure.
If there is any other fan less "fan" designs then that's more than I know.

If you're designing these follow a few simple rules to give your fan a physical advantage barring your fin design.
    1) dont put a ring around the outside. That increase its rotational mass which makes the motor have to work harder. Lower RPMs means lower CFMs.
    2) make it as thin as possible. Again. Reduce the rotational mass to get it spinning.
    3) Look at the twist/angle of a real fan blade. A lot of these fail (like the moose antlers) by having too radical or too shallow of an angle.
    4) the airfoil design isn't worth much, all it does is thicken your blades and reduce your RPMs, reducing your performance. If it gave radical improvements, all fan designs made by corporations would use them.

You know what the Moose fan reminds me of? Those fins around an axolotl's head. The blades look almost like that.

...all in all, 2 things are certain:
    1) moose antlers make nice fan blades
    2) waffles are excellent at spreading dirt (dust) all over the casing
    ...:D

Hey, I think at the end of every season, you should give out special awards like the quietest fan, the best design, the best static pressure, the best airflow, etc since people buy fans a specific purpose!

I know its a tiny detail, but I absolutely loved the addition of the rotating fan in the bottom right of each corresponding fan during the test. Although, I highly recommend you greenscreen them next time. Keep up the awesome series! Glad to have found the channel and stuck here since the first episode!

Loved the bottom right picture during smoke tests. Since you like upping your game constantly and improving everything i would suggest getting a very small green screen like material and some type of green coloured putty to stick the fans to that and to your spinning surface. That way you could have some of them holding themselves without alligator clips and no background. Awesome content as always!

I sent in a fan design a whole while ago. When you ask people to send in stuff, would be nice to at least get some idea if your design is rejected, in queue or whatever.

Very interesting to see the low noise level of the moose fan. It reminds me very much of the cevrons on modern turbofan engines, but with the tips on the leading edge. Very nice design indeed!

Major Hardware; Check out the exhaust trail of the square fan! its a perfect shape. nearly perfect cone that doesn't appear to deform over distance.
It may not be the best due to its blade design, but the shroud seems to act as a very effective funnel for controlling the direction of the exhaust! this would make a fantastic intake fan since it would direct more air at the cpu cooler/gpu rather than spewing it everywhere into the case.

For the smoke tests, have you considered adding small pipes/straws to your bottle so that you could get smaller streams of smoke?

    1) PiP of the fan during fog test is awesome 👌
    2) I think you should start adding "material waste" to your beginning intro of the fans. Weight would probably be easiest to measure I think, grams? Universal.
    3) do your neighbors think you smoke pounds of weed? I imagine when you're doing the fog test, at some point, a haze comes out of your house.
    Excellent content, thank you!

One thing I would say make an acrylic box to put the smoke machine in and see how long it takes for the fan to remove all the smoke also put the fan on top of the box not the side.

Would love you to show the commercial fan results in the centre if the screen when showing the fan results. That way we have a good point of comparison with the other episodes. Also hope the last episode in the series is a re-run of the top 8 fans, done in the same material to get a proper comparison. Great show as always
