I am an ol’ timer and I try to keep my 20 year old van running by doing as much work on it as I can. I really appreciate the videos from 1A Auto because they are all full of useful info and are professionally done. I’ve saved a lot of time and money by watching, thanks.

Hard to believe how a bad wheel bearing can cause so much trouble. Great information right there 👍

Man I always wondered why mechanics shook the wheel from the 3 and 9 & 12 and 6 position. Such a good explanation, thank you!

Our 2005 Ram 1500 was making some very loud clanking sounds from front end as though metal was snapping and clicking like a playing card in bike spokes.
A shop thought it was the CV Axle.
We had the drivers CV Axle replaced along with upper and lower ball joints just for good measure (180,000km)
Drove truck 700km home and another week driving locally before the exact same clanking started again.
I checked the front Diff (electronic 4x4) and found 19 roller bearing niblets laying in the old silver looking diff oil.
Replaced the front diff and passenger CV Axle...for good measure.
    Week later same clanking...
After watching a lot of YT vids on the noises we had I finally found one that was almost identical sounding.
    Front wheel bearing!
Swapped out the drivers side all in one Front wheel bearing after 5 hrs (seized in the knuckle)...
Month and a half, no clanking.
Edit: 2 & half months no clanking.

After watching this, I'm pretty sure (and hope) all I need is an alignment!

I'm still going to make sure, and cross my fingers that its an alignment.

I've gotten to the point I can do a front wheel bearing on one of 4wd Chevy Trailblazers ('06 & '04) in 45 minutes start tp finish. I've done a few.

My 2011 Corolla was a nightmare. The front bearings just kept going bad and getting replaced under warranty until losing the car to a tornado last year. They were the press-in type, so I couldn’t DIY. :(

I just changed mines last week and forgot to put the dust shield back on. Is it okay to leave them off?

No, that keeps things live dirt, rocks, dust and other things that are on the road from getting in.. Also, if you live in area that gets rain and snow, it's keeps it clean&dry

My '09 FIt started making noise a few months ago. I put it off for almost 1500 miles, until it got to the point where the friction could hold my car in neutral on a slight hill. When I inspected the inside of the drum, I saw the absolute carnage that had unfolded. The play in the bearing caused the wheel to go off camber, rubbing the drum against the bottom edge of the back plate and leaving tons of metal shavings inside the drum. The front shoe wore down unevenly, to under 1 mm on the bottom and about 1.5 at the top.
Please don't put this off. I'm lucky in that this only cost me in excessive part wear. If I had put it off for much longer the bearing would have almost certainly seized, or even broken apart entirely. Not a good time if you tend to drive in excess of the speed limit...
