      Right? I happened to enjoy all of the DCCU movies as well as the MCU movies. See I don't care if it is Marvel, DC or some third party comic book company no one has heard of, I am a fan of SUPERHERO movies, where they originally come from doesn't matter to me. Can't we all just get along and enjoy them?

    • @thedonutvan3871
      @thedonutvan3871 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      You sir got it all together 👌. I just don't understand how people can hate the MCU just because they more of a DC fan. Like if u enjoy them both what's the harm. I personally LOVE both and it's the best I like variety.

    • @KittyBoom360
      @KittyBoom360 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah, I like both too.
      Marvel is more vanilla and safe and mainstream like pop music. I like pop.
      WB's new DC films are more niche, risky, and will have haters. I actually kinda hated MoS and BvS at first. Rewatched with new mindset tho and loved them both!

    • @KittyBoom360
      @KittyBoom360 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Madalin Grama "DC just doesn't do good work."
      Do you even read DC? Or, are you judging DC based on the WB films???
      Marvel Studios, under Disney, actually produces their own films. DC does NOT.
      If you want to understand what is going on with DC, read the recent Rebirth stuff. The meta narrative is all about how the dark and gritty fad of Watchmen's success influenced New 52 and WB's films and lost its magic, its mojo. DC Comics is self aware about all of this and way ahead of us. What's coming out of DC Comics right now is awesome stuff.
      Just saying, don't trash on DC based on WB's films. DC hasn't even been allowed to touch a script until WW. Sure, there has been some producer funding from DC for the WB films, but no real creative control was given to anyone from DC on the films except for the upcoming WW film, finally.

    • @irvenman
      @irvenman 8 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Marvel and DC war only happens between fanboys. I watch both, I buy both comics, watch both tv shows/cartoons and play both videogames. I'm a fan of comics and graphic novels. I can't understand how people can only enjoy one or the other.

    • @ourlasthero51
      @ourlasthero51 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I don't understand it, and I never knew it was a thing until I saw it on the internet one day. I don't see why people would want to limit themselves with all of the things both offer.

    • @kennybrightwell1877
      @kennybrightwell1877 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Super Nino That war was thanks in part to Stan Lee. Essentially, Stan Lee would write an op-ed article at the end of every comic called Stan's Soap Box. One of the things he talked about was how he didn't like DC. Thanks to that, and the innovative characters Marvel was creating, they became to big for DC to sue/buy. Which they did a lot of.

    • @johnnieriot13
      @johnnieriot13 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Kenny Brightwell I actually read an article by Stan lee that said back in stans day that they manufactured the feud and Stan and the editor and chef of dc I forgot his name were actually friends and often attended parties together and most of the d c and marvel staff would have diner once a month together at a restaurant

    The problem is DC movies are completely controlled by Warner bros who are utterly incapable of marketing anyone who's not Batman.
    Give credit where due, DC gave us Justice League and Justice League Unlimited. And of course let's not forget Batman the Animated Series. Those shows were awesome!

    • @lovelyyecats
      @lovelyyecats 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      True, but keep in mind, this was evaluating MCU and the DCCU - aka, CINEMATIC universes. WhatCulture specifically didn't mention any Marvel shows - liveaction ones like Agents of SHIELD, Agent Carter, Daredevil, Jessica Jones, etc., and animated ones like Earth's Mightiest Heroes (which is one of my favorite superhero animated shows! - because they were comparing the two based on liveaction movie productions.
      I agree that the JL and DC shows - both animated AND liveaction - have been TOP. Even better than Marvel's, imo (I am a HUGE Flash fan, and I adored season 1 of Supergirl). But just on the basis of how well Marvel vs. DC's CINEMATIC universes are doing right now, I think WhatCulture is right - Marvel is ahead.

    • @TyphonJRT
      @TyphonJRT 8 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      The problem is DC doesn't have someone like Feige who understands comics. They have Snyder, who thinks all comics should be like The Watchmen. There's an old interview with him where he states
      "(When talking about The Watchmen)You could call it “high-brow” comics, but to me, that comic book was
      just pretty sexy! I had a buddy who tried getting me into “normal” comic
      books, but I was all like, “No one is having sex or killing each other.
      This isn’t really doing it for me.” I was a little broken, that way. So
      when Watchmen came along, I was, “This is more my scene.”"
      As far as Batman goes, he had this to say: "Everyone says that about [Christopher Nolan’s] Batman Begins. "Batman’s dark." I’m like, okay, "No, Batman’s cool." He gets to go to a Tibetan
      monastery and be trained by ninjas. Okay? I want to do that. But he doesn’t, like, get raped in prison. That could happen in my movie. If you want to talk about dark, that’s how that would go."
      And this is the man DC gave the keys to the kingdom to.

    Disney-fied family fun? Well, ignoring the fact that in the movies, Tony Stark calls a child a pussy at one point, have you seen the Netflix shows?
    Even then, why shouldn't super heroes be family fun? Honestly I think that's the best way to do super heroes! Yeah, you can have darker stuff, but there's nothing wrong with going the other way.

    People say marvel is "too cartoony and silly" and I would say movies like the Winter Soldier are EASILY more mature and serious than Batman V superman which had me laughing in the theater at the out of place CGI troll boss fight at the end or the hilarious Justice league set up

    • @DoctorLazers
      @DoctorLazers 8 ปีที่แล้ว +47

      My question is, why is cartoony and silly a criticism. These are comic books people, that's totally fine. Cartoony and silly isn't bad, cartoony and silly is great! Fucking GotG was an absolute stand-out and it is by far the most ridiculous of them.

    • @simonegreco1958
      @simonegreco1958 8 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      BvS was not mature, not deep nor profound. Just because it throws some seemingly-deep lines about god or power or whatever (that contradicts each other) doesn't make it a mature movie. The Dark Knight is a mature movie, becuase it has themes that are explored throughout the whole movie. BvS doesn't do that, it just touch a hundred themes in a random way withouth digging deeper

  • @MrHaganenoEdward
    @MrHaganenoEdward 7 ปีที่แล้ว +69

    I just fucking hate when people complain about diversity. I mean MCU already has strong female characters and cool black superheroes. While they deserve a bit more space it's not because they're female or black.
    Colour of the skin or having tits doesn't make a good and entertaining character.

    • @matthewfenwick6864
      @matthewfenwick6864 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      MrHaganenoEdward People want poc characters and female characters headlining the film not be side characters. The MCU will nearly be a decade old when the Black Panther and Captain Marvel movies comes out which will also make them 2 out 22 movies to not have a white guy as the lead.

    • @e3102bete
      @e3102bete 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      They had to start with characters people know first, and then some who maybe we didn't know but were part of the Avengers. Now they can branch out. But it's about balancing. If Black Panther had been introduced prematurely then it wouldn't have been right. They gave him purpose, and a story, instead of throwing him in there as a gimmick to appease the masses. I think there should be more equal representation in films too, to be clear. But it shouldn't be done solely as an activist statement. That undermines everything by making it about civil rights more than sharing the arts with everyone

    • @MrHaganenoEdward
      @MrHaganenoEdward 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Comic Fan That's quite what one of the things I meant when I was talking about more space for them. I'm not looking forward to Black Panther's movie because he's black, but because he's freaking awesome.

      From my experience, these are just people who only watch the movies and want to seem aknowledged in discussions. The ones who read comics from both know that many writers worked for both of them and so many characters are similiar, that it is almost impossible to seperate DC and MARAVEL as a whole. You can argue if you like the tone of Dark Knight Arc over other Batman arcs, but both have soooo many good movies, game and comics, that it is just stupid to completely close out either one

    Whenever people say that something sucks because it's different from the comics I just say, remember bane? In batman and robin bane was comic accurate and terrible. And in the dark knight rises bane is very different and better. Comic accuracy doesn't mean movie quality

    • @kunai30
      @kunai30 8 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      Bane from batman and robin wasn't comic accurate. In the comics Bane is brains and brawn, in batman and robin he was a mindless brute, hell he couldn't even talk and i've seen him talk in the comics all the time

    • @rickycarrillo7821
      @rickycarrillo7821 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      dude, bane in Batman and Robin was way more comic accurate than tdkr bane

    • @kunai30
      @kunai30 8 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      lets see....comic Bane deduced Batman's secret identity, made a plan to free a bunch of inmates so by the time Batman captures them all he'll be tired physically and mentally, breaks into Wayne manner beats Batman, takes him to downtown Gotham to show the city he beat their hero and the city is now his...Batman and Robin Bane was a brute with very little little intelligence.....yeah real accurate there lol

    • @Logan_Baron
      @Logan_Baron 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And he was a lackey, which well he kind of was in TDKR too, but less so and it made sense in the story and even then it was still a problem that many people had with his portrayal in TDKR, TDKR Bane was closer to the comics than B&R Bane was. Sure he was changed but less so in TDKR.

    • @TheDiablo3WD
      @TheDiablo3WD 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      with Ultron, i didn't like that he was made by Stark, it gives him less of his own personality, he is just a snarky robot? instead of hating Hank Pym and loving his mother Janet in a Oedipus weird complex way (also Ultron seeing himself as their son), makes for a more interesting and flawed character, also he was severely under powered, i was hoping to see Ultron single-handedly kick the Avengers asses and he just doesnt, i was hoping he would kill someone if not multiple powered-people, instead they have him "gun down" Quicksilver in a lame way, they are my complaints of Ultron as a character, although i did enjoy the movie, it could've been so much better (also those transformer style lips really annoyed me)

    • @sabinea.4532
      @sabinea.4532 8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      you do understand that wasn't possible right? he could not be their son cause Hank Pym wasn't in the mcu yet...you're not judging the movie you're judging what you wanted to see..that's weird. Ultron was the perfect villain for the movie, he was Tony Stark, just without his experience in the cave

      Melly Reed, who do you keep copying and pasting your previous comments in different topics? Do you lack the intelligence to write something original? Here, I will respond to you in the same way.
      "They are referring to MCU villains." - correct. Since MCU apologists seem to not understand the difference between Netflix Marvel universe and regular Marvel universe.
      "Hell, Even Mandarin wasnt bad." - it was downright awful, just like vast majority of MCU villains.
      "People just dont like to feel tricked" - or, maybe people just don't like shitty movies, ha? Seems logical.
      "it makes them feel stupid." - well, when you watch stupid movies like Iron Man 3 or Thor 2, there is a chance that at some point you will feel stupid.
      "They thought for a set amount of movie it was going one way" - which was the way in which we thought that Iron Man 3 was going to be at least not as bad and awful as Iron Man 3, and it was even worse (if that's even possible, Iron Man 2 was an utter shitshow).
      "and they felt" - disgusted because they watched a terrible movie?
      "Ben Kinsley is a damn boss" - remember Bloodrayne? He was boss in that movie too.
      "and didnt deserve the negativity that he got for taking that role" - and who gave him the negativity? As far as I know, it's the director of the movie, Shane Black, who receives negativity from people. How do I know? Because I'm one of those people who wanted to punch him in the balls after they saw Iron Fail 3.
      "He made the movie fun, which is what Marvel does." - he made an already shitty movie even more shittier.
      "DC wants you to feel, Fox wants you to cry, and Marvel wants you to" - cringe.

    • @MachineFuckingHate
      @MachineFuckingHate 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      "They sold out. Literally for a billion dollars." - and does it make some of their shitty movies look less shitty?
      "They didnt care about the fans feelings, or the nostalgia you feel for them." - so why did they put Thanos cameo at the end of the Avengers? You think they did that for you, general sheep audience who never read a comic book and who never heard of Thanos? Or for the fans that will immediately get the reference?
      "They cared about cash." - of course they do. Which is probably the main reason why so many of their movies are soulless shit shows.
      "They could have literally shown a turd in different landscapes for the films entirety" - they already did this. Watch Iron Man 2 and Thor movies.
      "and the creators would not have cared, at all." - tell that to Bob Layton, one of the most influential Marvel creators. He unabashedly trashed Iron Man 2 and 3, despite the fact that he was indited on set of Iron Man 2.

      I completely disagree, in my book idea behind Mandarin's portrayal is the only good thing about Iron Man 3. I'm glad someone decided to ignore comic book wankers and made his own interpretation which had a well placed message. Too bad rest movie was so silly.

      I didn't mind the idea of a switch it's just that everything that came after it was so damn awful. Love Sir B.K. idea that the Mandarin was actually the Mandarin all along and was pretending to be an actor to even Killian, decent way to bring the character back.

      I like if a movie has a different take or version of a character. What's the use of using another medium and bother making it, if it's just a complete rehash of the comic. Bring something new in. But it needs to be good, which the Mandarin character wasn't. Put a new cool spin on a character rather than just take away all the good spin on the character and just go with "Okay we'll just not make the character cool".

      "They thought for a set amount of movie it was going one way" - which was the way in which we thought that Iron Man 3 was going to be at least not as bad and awful as Iron Man 2, and it was even worse (if that's even possible, since Iron Man 2 was an utter shitshow).
Because I'm one of those people who wanted to punch him in the balls after I saw Iron Fail 3.
      "He made the movie fun, which is what Marvel does." - he made an already shitty movie even more shittier.
      "DC wants you to feel, Fox wants you to cry, and Marvel wants you to" - cringe.

    My one issue with Civil War was the scene with Secretary Ross explaining the Sokovia Accords to the Avengers and using they're battles as justification. What he conveniently left out is that things would have turned out far worse if the Avengers weren't there(Battle of New York, and the SHIELD Helicarrier incident), and the Harlem incident is directly his fault, and no one pointed that out to him.

      to be fair, Battle of New York wouldn't have happened if not for the Avengers (Thor and Cap, specifically) because it was Thor's dealings with Loki, and Cap's dealings with Red Skull and the tesseract that led to the invasion. Ultron trying to destroy humanity was a result of Stark's messing with the mind gem, and without the battle of New York, Operation Insight never would have been greenlit.

I even saw in Ant Man that Luis went back to save the guy he knocked out at Pym Industries. A guy no one would really miss. Perilously close to the gag about the henchmen Austin Powers kills in his movies but a serious consideration today in mainstream blockbusters.

      I would disagree. Granted that some of the important characters such as Martian Manhunter or Hawkgirl or Shazaam aren't well known by non fans, but characters like Wonder Woman, Superman, Batman, Aquaman, Robin, Flash, Green Arrow and so many more are quite famous. Plus, the various TV shows such as Arrow and Flash are giving light to the lesser knowns. As far as Marvel is concerned, Cap, Ironman, Hulk, Thor, and Spiderman are prob the most well known and most relevant, to casuals at least. Many don't know anyone from Xmen other than Wolverine and possibly Mystic if they really like Jennifer Lawrence. Honestly speaking, not many Heroes are known by casuals in the MCU. DC has defining heroes that basically all know.

      I think Stan Lee kind of put it best, when in both of the movies, he was this massive being that was just... too much, whereas in the Avengers movies, there's that balance of both strength, but also vulnerability. Like he wasn't "all powerful." Admittedly, that's probably on the fault of the director, but still. Story-wise, I didn't mind them, although, I did like Ed Norton as Bruce a tinge more.

      I'd agree... DC has stayed consistent with the Villains for Comic book geeks to know who/what a character is without having to give much back story. Like everyone knows who the Joker is; literally no backstory has to be given. They know who he is. Other names like Zod, Luther, Doomsday, Bane, etc. has stayed consistent with Comics however Marvel has to keep introducing new Villains.

    • @iHuzza
      @iHuzza 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm only talking about the MCU as (I believe?) the movies and the TV shows are in separate universes. Kingpin's pretty good in Daredevil, but I haven't seen Jessica Jones so I'm kinda clueless about Kilgrave and the way he's portrayed. I forgot about Winter Soldier, mainly because mentally, I don't class him as the main villain of Winter Soldier. Although in theory he's the primary antagonist and a perfect counter to the Captain, that ginger head of S.H.I.E.L.D was the guy pulling all of the strings, and I found him as intimidating and exciting to watch as a brick. I'll still concede though, that makes it 3 Marvel villains that I found interesting and/ or intimidating.

    • @mattventura724
      @mattventura724 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The biggest reason why "in my opinion" I hated the movie is the mandarin plot twist look I agree he's an out-dated character but the fact that marvel advertised him for over a year just "in my opinion" made fan-boys excited for the movie if he really is out-dated why the fuck would you advertise him for over a year?It's like seeing a youtube video with a misleading title/thumbnail clicking on it and seeing something completely different replacing an iconic character with a villain that was almost as forgettable as malekith or abomination and the only thing intriguing in the story is tony's PTSD besides that the movie had a plot where the real villain of the movie's reveal was dissapointing and making us think that pepper was dead meaningless just like war machines fake death in civil war.Personal opinion though they should have killed off pepper so they can stop trying to explain why she's not in the future movies.

      i think this is more of the motivation. In the first Thor movie we see what loki after very well. He just want his family approval. You see that he love both his parents but he knows that Thor get the best stuff. He create a situation where in the end he will be seen as a hero.. only for the plan to fail. Giving his nature and how really booker his avenger plan was. he thought to destroy earth mightiest defender but bringing them together?? (is he working against thanos or fore thanos?) So we got several films where he is flesh out as a villain. The rest seem .. I want power.. i want to control the world.. only Zemo had a better motivation and unlike Loki his plan work.

      Agreed. Especially when comparing them to Loki, most of them seem pretty bland. I do think that if they gave them more screen time they could be fleshed-out a bit more, like the MCU tv show villains. Not that that'll magically make the villains more interesting, though. Loki was pretty awesome his first time around because, as Marveryn said, he just has an interesting back story--and more importantly, his character has somewhere to go.

    • @channelsofash
      @channelsofash 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I think the lack of costumed villainy is hurting the MCU. It's just rather insane to think that you have all these heroes running around in costumes but villains are nope I'll wear something bland and boring you would find normal people wearing. Part of the Loki appeal is that he dressed part of a great villain. The villains need comic book inspired costumes not just the heroes.

      @Ledpooplin55 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

  • @BishopS
    @BishopS 8 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    The main problem with Marvel's villains is except for a few, they seem to be one shot. I'd like to see more reoccurring villains here and there, but a lot of them can't return because they're dead.
    But I do always enjoy the MCU films.

    • @Logan_Baron
      @Logan_Baron 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      That's pretty much true of all super hero moves. Batman didn't fight the Joker in all 3 Dark Knight movies. While Luthor is usually in all Superman movies, he usually creates, calls in or works with some other Superman enemy. Zod, Doomsday, (ahem a computer programmer).
      In comics recurring villains work well because they churn out at least 12 issues a year (more when you consider 3 or 4 Spiderman titles, and team books so you can have Cap or Thor villains in the Avengers in addition to their own titles.
      With movies, you've got one, every several years. Audiences aren't as likely to keep tuning in to watch Cap 1 where Cap fights the Red Skull, and then come back for Cap 2 to watch Cap fight the Red Skull, and then Cap 3 for Cap to fight the Red Skull, as awesome of a villain as he is. With having to wait several years between movies we'll never get to see all the great villains as it is. But you trim that number down even more if you keep bringing back the same villain.

    • @KallenSC

    • @BishopS
      @BishopS 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      KallenSC
      Marvel Movies are hero movies and hero movies are nothing without the villians. It's not about making them being cool its about making the Heroes threats be more than just "Monster of the Week" If the heroes and the overarching MCU stories are connected, then the Villians should be more connected too.
      I don't know why you're bringing DCEU up either... I didn't. You know why? Because I don't really like the DCEU universe that much so far.
      Larry Berry
      Also, Joker was planned to be in the Dark Knight Rises but of course that couldn't take place after Heath Ledger's death. IT would've been great if they went with their plan, but sometimes things are out of everyone's control.

      I'm not really sure the villains being one-shot is that big of a problem when you consider the variety necessary to keep these movies and it's universe fresh. Marvel TV is great, despite cancelling/passing on Agent Carter and Most Wanted, whereas the MCU is da bomb and not a bomb. I'd be happy if DC stuck with TV as you get to see a truer adaptation cos it's not mushed into one 2 hour movie. Nick Fury, Falcon, War Machine, Scarlet Witch, Black Widow, Black Panther, Luke Cage, Robbie Reyes, Jessica Jones, Captain Marvel, Gamora, and there are plenty of female main characters in Agents of SHIELD, even heard they are wantingt to do a Cloak and Dagger TV series, series so we get another female and an African American to join the ranks and if you count disabled people as diverse then Daredevil also counts. That is actually quite a lot of diverse characters.

  • @jtaylor4817
    @jtaylor4817 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Here's my response:
    10. They always kill off the villains so it doesn't matter if they're "good".
    9. Just because the tone is different, doesn't mean that the plot is. And having "a talking raccoon and a tree" isn't throwing a curve ball since those are actual members of the team in the comics.
    8. In my opinion they try to hard to get people of all races, genders, and stuff like that, and it ends up ruining good characters when they change old characters. At least in the comics. Even so, if you try to argue it's "not diverse in the MCU", you'd still be right considering all of the main characters are white men, but that's how it should be anyway.
    7. Black Widow being a good character means she SHOULD have a stand-alone film when you argued the opposite. And they haven't portrayed her well, considering she's literally just a love interest in every movie she's in, depending on which movie it is, it's either Stark, Steve, or Hulk.
    6. Sure they've replaced Spiderman, but that was only when he was in Sony, and it wouldn't make sense to replace him in the MCU again. And the actors have all become so iconic, it would just be DUMB to replace them, because they are the reason some people watch the movies, and it would be DUMB not to, because then Marvel will drive themselves into bankruptcy every time they try to renew RDJ.
    5. Go ahead and fight me. Literally almost every act in the franchise was better than the Avengers' third act. Not to say that they're good. I mean, I loved Ant Man and it's third act, and going back to how you said they "weren't predictable", was anyone REALLY surprised by "Zemo's revelation". And Loki didn't even die. Which brings me to another point they won't let their heroes DIE! Besides Quicksilver's death, which was really sloppy and tacked on anyway.
    4. First of all, how do you not get that the Toby Maguire movies weren't in the MCU! Secondly, They've litearally broke records THREE TIMES for "over stuffing".
    3. You even admitted that they went away from the source material, so thanks for that.
    2. I do agree that the more recent movies are better though.
    1. Any of the "darkness" or even any concepts Marvel has done was done AFTER DC had done it. For example BvS was announced, then a LONG TIME after, Civil War was announced.
    I look forward to seeing one of you guys try to argue this.

    I'm not specifically taking shots at Marvel here, but I just don't find most superhero movies as enjoyable nowadays... It feels like there's no depth. With the original Spiderman and the original Spiderman 2, you had so much emotional investment. You followed this character from where it all began, and through all his ups and downs: the bullies, the crush, the excitement of almost being finally done with high school, the gaining of his powers, the searching of his identity, the pain of losing a loved one, the fear of losing more loved ones, the struggle of the real world, attempting to hide his identity from those closest to him, the list goes on and on. It really takes you through the whole wheel of emotions. Whereas I feel like most superhero movies today are just huge build ups for one huge final fight scene, with a cheap attempt at a love plot thrown in. True, there are some exceptions, for example, Doctor Strange was a nice refresher that took a different route. But for the most part, I'm still missing the depth that I got from older superhero movies like Spiderman.

    Scuicide Squad
    VS
    Guardians of the Galaxy
    PROTAGANISTS
    Deadshot: loves his daughter, kills people, good with guns
    Starlord: kidnapped orphan raised by space pirates who never took him to his dad, became treasure hunter, special gun
    FEMALE
    Harley: Gangster's sex toy... has a gun, bat, and cameo hammer
    Gamora: trained assassin, raised by the power hungry bad guy, realizes he is bad, tries to become good-ish, Sword:Godslayer
    MONSTER
    Killer Croc: is... Ugly... scaly... strong... what did he do?
    Groot: I am GROOT, "WE" are Groot, actually emotionally diverse and sacrificing for his friends, doubles as house plant
    RUNTS
    Cpt. Boomerang: Possibly offensive, idiotic, uses BOOMERANGS... (how BAD is the DCEU police?)
    Rocket Raccoon: Cyborg Raccoon who's been modified MANY TIMES, mechanical expert, actual RUNT
    MUSCLE
    Diablo?: killed his family by accident, ex-gangster, fire form, refuses to use powers after the accident
    Drax: family killed by Ronin, trained warrior of sorts, twin swords, will kill anyone who stands between him and revenge
    (Honestly these are the closest match)
    both movies are their own thing, are team builders, and have a world(s) shattering villain who is too vague to describe.

      hes exactly like his comic counterpart. Helmut zemo was the 13th baron zemo and the son of henrich (who was the creator of adhesive X and the masters of evil.) helmut was at first the pheonix who was trying to avenge his fathers death against cap and the avengers. He later takes up the mantle of baron zemo and creates the thunderbolts.

    Also I have one criticism about "replacing actors" that you're glossing over. People don't like replacing *good* actors who keep dishing out *good* performances. Replacing Terrance Howard wasn't hard because his role hadn't become interesting yet, replacing Spider-Man was easy because people weren't satisfied with Spider-Man 3, or the Spider-Man reboot.

      Malec Shipper even then, the trilogy had a lot of huge flaws. They did some villains well and some poorly (and I'll be forever salty at their butchering of R'as's name and, despite a great actor, kinda wasted him), but they're mostly pretty grimdark and the pallate was reused for Man of Steel, taking the arguably most straight-up inspiring hero and turning him into basically Batman. A big hit is DC is trying to mostly cash in on their heavy hitters, whilst Marvel is using majors and minors but giving them about the same amount of love. Marvel also kickstarted the comic movie blockbuster in the modern age, or at least, Fox based on Marvel comics. But eho would have thought, pre-X-Men, we'd be getting movies for the likes of Captain Marvel (not the one with the power of Shazam), Black Panther, and Ant Man? And Ant Man was great, paying tribute to the original whilst making it about his legacy. I think Marvel will end up being the ones who break the legacy character barrier as well.
      Amusingly, DC shows, while flawed, have shown what DC is capable of in live action, yet for the most part, the DCEU ia ignoring the better parts of them and what they're doing, introducing cult and low-popularity characters alongside their major leads, and mostly treating them well, if not the most faithfully.

    Batman: Traumatized kid grows up and cosplays a flying rodent and beats the shit out of mentally ill people.
    Star Wars: the story of a boy who is orphaned, indoctrinated into an antiretroviral religion, joins a terrorist group that has no real basis to rebel, and commits genocide when he blows up the Death Star. And that's just the first movie and what's on screen. Think of what would happen to the economy and all the lives lost.

    I agreed with everything except the villain argument. Loki was without a doubt the one hit wonder of Marvel Movie antagonists. Zemo was laughable and unthreatening and the death of his family was a macguffin only mentioned like once just so he'd have a reason to hate the Avengers. Red Skull was sadly underutilized, and Ultron was very similar to Jesse Eisenberg's Lex Luthor in that the personality might've worked for some other villain… just not Ultron. I mean, he's a genocidal robot. He's not meant to tell jokes about cooking.

    • @marvel672
      @marvel672 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I don't mind Ultron having some wit to him and it does make sesnse in the MCU since he's Tony's creation. What made me upset was he didn't feel the slightest bit intimidating. When Ultron was on screen I never felt the stakes were all that high which is a shame because I enjoyed Spader's voice and he could've been a great villain.

    Up to 0:23 - ... Or alternatively, people have valid criticisms not to be dismissed with assumptions of motive.
    10 - Sure that villain from 'Iron Man' (who I can't name despite the fact that I'm paused moments after you said it) is good for what he needs to be but as far as superhero movies go, he's forgettable. The same goes for Red Skull. He looks and acts great but he's just used the once and most of the movie doesn't even focus on him but rather Captain America's story. As for Baron Zemo, well his plan sort of vaguely worked but the character himself was rather rubbish. I've seen villains with that motivation done a helluva lot better. And then there's Loki... his character makes no sense (his motivations are all over the place). He just exists to serve the plot and be smug about it. This being based off 'Thor' and 'The Avengers', Loki is not a well-written character.
    On the other hand, I actually liked the Mandarin (however much potential was lost with that creative decision) and Ultron.
    I'm not sure anyone says the MCU has no good villains but it's distinctly lacking in memorable ones.
    9 - You have a valid point for the MCU but you're missing the point against. It's not that they're all the same but they do feel generic, predictable and without stakes.
    5 - It's a fair comment. Again, someone saying "all" is just making a provocative statement but they do have quite a few cases of poor third act's. In terms of 'The Avengers', no way is that a particularly good third act. A load of villains come out of nowhere for the sake of providing a threat; the action is mostly forgettable; and it's just a change of pace from the past however-long-it's-been of them talking on the helicarrier.
    'Thor 2'... yeah that death that's then retconned. Gotta love that pointless MCU writing.
    'Captain America: Civil War'... that very anticlimactic third act after the great ending of the second act.
    You say some of the best moments come in the third act's; do I dare bring up BVS? Cool moments doesn't equate to good writing.
    1 - I think DC did the whole anti-superhero/collateral damage story better in BVS than Marvel did in CW (as much of a mess BVS was overall).

    • @stevenventure8487
      @stevenventure8487 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Except, as pointed out pretty succinctly in the video, they really aren't valid criticisms. It's more an example of internet contrarian culture to hate on the MCU than anything, especially when taken in the larger context of other studios' CBM productions.
      10. Just your overall reasoning is fallacious: "most of the movie doesn't even focus on him (Red Skull) but rather Captain America's story". That's the point: the story is about the hero. The focus is on the hero. Typically, the villain is there to provide a moral, philosophical and/or physical counterpoint to the hero. To provide menace and conflict and generally drive the plot.
      I'd agree at this point that the MCU has not really given us any truly great villains, but you don't need a great villain to tell a great story. Though I believe that Stane/Iron Monger, Zemo, Loki, Red Skull are actually examples of well done villains.
      9. Honestly, when people say things like "generic", "predictable", etc it comes off like they're prejudging based simply off the MCU brand, not reality. Reality is that the MCU started off rather copy/paste as they were building their innovative shared universe concept with lesser known characters, but have been telling stories since that are, in actuality, really varied in theme, scope, tone, and even subgenre.
      ... And the lack of stakes argument is really at the point of being pretty laughable. Life-and-death and worldwide destruction aren't the only stakes, and it's just shame so many cling to such a limited definition. Civil War is actually a perfect example of smaller stakes taking on a grander scale: from Zemo and his revenge, to Stark and Cap's friendship, to the breaking up of the Avengers, the Sokovia Accords leading to half the team being branded fugitives and Rhodey being maimed by friendly fire. It really seems like the "kid friendly stories" the MCU puts out are actually too deep for many of you.
      5. The early Phase 1 movies had rather anti-climactic 3rd acts, but Marvel improved quickly, and the Avengers 3rd act was actually very well done. Yes, the faceless disposable army is a pretty traditional trope BUT using it made sense in many ways: it honored the comics to no small extent, as historically the Avengers have often faced long odds made up of massive, disposable armies, as well as being a convenient way to give every character their moments to shine. I know it flies in the face of contrarian views, but not all tropes are bad.
      And even your last point doesn't make sense... "cool moments" =/= great moments. The MCU has exceled, especially recently, at tying those great 3rd act moments into the larger narrative of typically both the given movie, as well as the greater shared universe they've built so successfully.
      1. Yeah, I wouldn't admit that you "think" anything of the sort, because it doesn't speak well of your opinions. BvS literally had zero stakes or serious discussion about the topic it was supposed to revolve around. How is the GCPD working with a mass murderer now? Somehow I don't think "change of heart" exonerates vigilante premeditated killings. Spouting one-line nonsense about entire cities being empty because everyone is off work (and no one goes out on Friday night in either city apparently). Government hearings blown up before they start but are never mentioned as being revisited (and no one has yet though to mention Superman stealing the space ship from the government and actually being the one to activate it and lead Zod to earth... bet THAT would make for an interesting subplot, but because the DCEU is for emo teens who want to show how mature they are we'll never see it)? As opposed to actual, reasonable, opposing ideologies being discussed throughout Civil War,

    The thing about respecting the source material is simple: stay loyal to the spirit of the characters and story as much as possible. Twist the original story and events when they no longer suit the current context, if they're too predictible and when something better is thought of. And most important: know what the fans want.
    Ex: Civil War had little to do with the comics, but was still very entertaining and considered a jewel of the MCU. The Mandarin twist in Iron Man 3 was stupid and unwanted for denying a character fans had been waiting for since the first movie.
