12:00 - The generally accepted version goes that FDR ordered MacA out of the Philippines...OTOH, there is a long-held belief in many quarters that MacA may have asked to be withdrawn. Either way, MacArthur remained a complete jack-hole, not least because he tried to have Wainwright court-martialed after the war for surrendering after MacA had ordered him not to...Truman's response was to give Wainwright the Medal of Honor.
Fat Electrician is quickerly and fastly becoming one of my favorite military history narrators. He has also inspired me to start making up words that people understand but know are not real and see what catches on because it is actually getting really fun besides just funny.
I was stationed at Ft. Drum, NY, early in my military career. I worked in the base headquarters human resources office, known as the G1 in Army parlance. One of the functions of the G1 is assigning details to fold the flag and play Taps for service members - active, retired, or honorably discharged - who had passed away. Because of how spread thin the division was with our deployments at the time, we were only providing two-man details unless it was an active duty or Medal of Honor death. Only the commanding general could authorize an exception to policy. One such exception was made. MG Hagenbeck authorized a full detail for a survivor of the Bataan Death March. Unfortunately, I forgot the name of the individual. I spoke with the Deputy G1 about the lengths we had to go through to verify that he had participated in the March, but we were able to do so.
Imagine being the Japanese inside that thing, fully thinking there's nothing that can get you in there. Then one of your buddies says, "Does anyone else smell gas?"
You know, after only four minutes in, it just occurred to me and I had to pause. There's been a lot of talk online about TH-cam reaction channels, specifically which ones are providing useful commentary over the original video and which ones are simply reuploading someone else's work. Now, we know that Mr. Terry and Fat Electrician get along pretty well, and it's safe to say that Mr. Terry is extremely well equipped to add his insights to his reactions. Perhaps, enough so that Fat Electrician might, for example, provide an opening in his video that is tailored specifically for someone who is well-versed in history to pause and riff on? Imagine: "Hey Quackbang, you mind if I react on your next video release?" "Sure, Big-T. Love your work. I'll even strategically comment right at the start about lacking the historical context. That should help you jump in on the subject for your own video." "Sweet. I'll make sure to wear your shirt, too." I could see it, honestly. Brothers in historical badassery, teaming up for the presentation.
They tore down the buildings and tower on top to make the fort lower profile so that it could only be optically targeted from within the main cannons' range
You are one of the "reaction" channels that actually adds to the content. most reactions are stealing other peoples hard work, however you add relevant context and your perspective as a tracher is very interesting. thanks for the content.
It's similar in some respects to WW2 German flak towers. Just an insane amount of concrete to absorb anything that might be thrown against it, then put weapons on top of it. 2,000 years from now, engineers working on ultra-advanced building materials are going to have to suffer through hearing how this fort lasted millennia so ancient American concrete must be amazing lost technology.
Yeah, FDR did order MacArthur out, which MacArthur refused to do for a long time. Maybe if he'd been willing to send his *family* to Australia, the powers that be wouldn't have been pushing so hard, I dunno. The problem is that when MacArthur *did* leave, he did so in the middle of the night with only his family and a few close members of his staff. Morale took a *huge.*
Oh absolutely I believe his escape from the Philippines is what damaged his reputation during world war II I've read that a lot of the officers and men of the Philippines Garrison didn't have a lot a good things to say about him after that
@@brigidtheirish exactly he could have stayed and surrendered with his command and just sent his family out to Australia The men would have had more respect for him if he had at least done that
Fort Drum wasn't the only battleship island of WW2. The japanese had their own called Hashima Island, owned by Mitsubishi. It wasn't equipped with guns and didn't get involved in military action. It was near Nagasaki, though, but probably not close enough to be affected by the bomb dropped on it. It had some harsh stuff going on.
Funny enough, the 2 turrets originally came from the 1st USS Texas and were only really modified. But before the US gave up the fort it was said that the last salvo was filled with sand that destroyed the barrels of the turrets.
Really love watching your reviews. Already seen the original video, but Fat Electrician is worth re-watching, and I love your input with additional historical context. Most of all though, I really want to thank you for what you do here. You really remind me of the great history teacher's I had in school, that taught me the importance of biased reporting, and critical thinking. Gives me hope for the children of the future knowing there's teachers like you out there❤
Yes, but the way he left is the problem. As he left months after he was ordered to which was meant to be a withdrawal of all forces in the Philippines. When he finally did withdrawal MacArthur did it in the middle of the night and only took his family and prominent members of his staff. So to the American soldiers stationed in the Philippines it looked like their general had abandoned them to save himself and morale further plummeted as a result.
This concrete fortress is still at the mouth of Manila Bay, its now part of tourist attractions here in the Philippines I don't know if there are boat trips to go to the fort itself, but from what I knew. Entering the fort internals is prohibited or cautioned, as most part of it is dilapidated and broken.
Talking about the Bataan Death March, there is a terrific biography called "Ghost Soldiers", which documents the perspective of the POWs as well as the men sent to save those at the Cabatuan camp.
I like how you provide additional historical details that are relevant to the subject matter. TFE gives the main talking points with humor and you give some nuance to the details.
If you are fascinated by concrete ships, there was an oil tanker (I think, it certainly wasn’t a military combat vessel) made in 1919 named the SS Selma. It is currently sunk off the coast of Galveston, Texas and you can see it today.
I love TFE, and now every time I watch his videos I look forward to watching your reaction... Love the collaboration between you two and hope you both continue what you are doing for a long time
For me reading into the fall of the Philippines is probably one of the most depressing points of WW2. Dunkirk is 2nd for me. And yes Mr Terry; FDR did order Gen MacArthur out of the Philippines due to his rank and his know how. Ironically a lot of troops didn’t like him, and neither did Harry Truman.
About El fraile & the whole Spanish-American war: few days before the island is about to jump on the American boats, Spanish did a "closed doors" talk to George Dewey that they'd rather surrender to him instead of the Filipinos because it'll be a world-wide humiliation for the Spanish if that happened. Dewey agreed to the deal so they sold my country off for $20 million. Fast forward to El fraile, the reason why there's few or no shots fired is because it's part of a freaking mock battle; the Spanish put up façade to fool us Sorry for the rant, but this goes to show how much I hated those two in that point
I have heard about other ways and materials to build ships. Some of it had to do with limited supplies of steel and so forth like the unsinkable Ice ship using saw dust but too much metal piping. I am going to enjoy his video. Do to computer problems I only have enough time to down load while typing this and watch later. Thank You.
Yes. FDR did order MacArthur out of the Philippines. In spite of this, many of the men left behind would never forgive him for abandoning them. I had to great uncles that survived the "death march" and being POWs heald in Japan for the duration. Any time they would hear his name mentioned would spit and call him dugout Doug.
Considering the fat electrician is working on his masters in history just because he's mad at how the usa is represented in post ww2 history is one of the best facts I know about some guy on the internet
And if I'm not mistaken I believe they did send a dive team down to the main sometime in the '90s I could be wrong on the date though and they found that a boiler had exploded and caused the ship to sink
I like how you talk over him explaining the thickness of the concrete and the steel on the turrets (and more). His information is delivered to so fast, you need to back it up a couple seconds when you pause, and don't talk over it. You miss details.
I wish someone would make a video about the US concentration camps in comparison to the others during WW2. There is so little info about them and people forget that we actually rounded up thousands of Japanese Americans and imprisoned them for no reason other than them being from Japan. That vast majority of which had their citizenship and many were second generation, meaning that they were born in the USA and had no connection to Japan other than their lineage.
A couple things. First, we didn't call them concentration camps. Second, I'm not even sure "concentration camp" would be a good name for them since that term is so heavily tied to the industrialized genocide Nazi Germany conducted. While the "relocation centers" in the US were a horrible idea that violated the rights of American citizens, they were also the *Ritz* in comparison to Nazi concentration camps.
Like this comment if we should take back Fort Drum.
God speed
HELL YEAH BROTHER We should repair it back to its former glory. I think it could be done.
Make it a museum like we do with our actual ships
@@Sean-rq2iq Exactly! Plus, Alcatraz exists. They give tours and have gift shops there.
Please watch his videos completely through. Neither you or @vloggingthroughhistory ever finish his videos and watch the after credits scenes he does.

Fun fact: Most of the Japanese crew inside Fort Drum are the surviving crew of the battleship Musashi (Yamato's sister ship).

10:31 that is BB 62, the USS New Jersey in the background, probably during the 1960's deployment to Vietnam...

You are correct, MacArthur was ordered out of the Philippines by FDR
He also chose to rush the blockade with PT boats instead of sneaking away on a submarine that was offered for the purpose.
