I am someone who was involved in a real life adoption story. My husband was adopted and we found his birthmother.
However, I would like to say something....the parents who adopted and raised the child are often forgotten or set aside in our thoughts about adoption.
These parents are the ones who did the work, they raised the child, gave up everything for the child, truly "loved" the child. And so, imagine if you can, how they feel in situations such as this, where the child they raised and loved finds his "birthparents". It's an extremely complicated thing this business of reunion, and I hope that people can also feel for the birthparents and the psychological process they go through. Yes, when Hamish hugged his "mom" you can say that you felt it, but also don't forget his adoptive "mom". Please acknowledge that there are two "moms" in this story, not just one. I don't mean to offend, but this is something I have experienced in my family.

As a parent myself, I am an older mother, I gave birth to twins when I was 46 years old...it would have been absolutely devestating to me had my daughter gotten pregnant whilst a teen. I’ve been looking for my mother since I left Barnardos, I had it in the newspapers in Newcastle where she was from. The Salvation Army did a lot and found my family. I met my grandmother, but no one knew where my mother was and I never found out. This was in 1964. I’m 73 now and will leave this world never knowing where she was or what had happened to her and now obviously how she died and where she could be buried, it’s been painful and something that I’ve been obsessed with. All I have is a cherished photo that I have framed, I look just like her. I’m writing my memoirs and hope to get it published.

What about the family who adopted you? Have you no love, loyalty, thanks or consideration for what they did for you by adopting you??? For whatever reason, your birthmother gave you away. She couldn't or didn't want to raise you. If for any reason you did happen to meet her, all you really owed her was THANKS for adopting you out! Honestly, I don't understand how these people who are adopted into wonderful, loving and caring families, feel the need to "connect" with these birthmothers... Oh I get it, you're curious. I wanted to know if the adoption agency had taken a pic of my birthmother when she gave me up... the answer was, "No, because it would identify her to you, and she had to sign papers to remain anonymous to you". My response was... "She was 19 years old when she gave me up... She's now 70+ years old... you're telling me a pic of her at 19 is going to give away her identity?" Absolutely ridiculous!

I have a step mother, the only parent left alive. It was a joy to me that my mother and step mother went to tea and theater together when they were in the same country... Germany or the USA. So it was fine for god to have the plan that separated this woman from her child for many years? Why is it a good god that bright them back together but not a bad god that had them separated? It makes no sense to say that only the good things are due to god but none of the bad. If there was a god powerful enough to make entire universes, than why can’t it do anything on earth to help people who suffer? This makes no sense at all. Religion is quite horrible actually and it may not be very kind or appropriate to post religious messages on an adoption show, considering the way the churches have run very abusive homes for unwed mothers. Many were exploited and their children taken against their wishes. Religion has certainly done a lot of harm to many people.

Hamish's Dad said he didn't know if he'd done the right thing telling Hamish that he was adopted, as he had looked confused and as though he didn't believe it. Of course he did the right thing, but he definitely did it at the wrong time. Telling someone of 15 that they are adopted if FAR TOO LATE. It should be told to them when they are small and as from the earliest they can remember. Then they don't feel confused or lied to.

People just did the best that they could at the time based on their understanding. If we all could go back in the past and change how we handled certain situations, I’m pretty sure the majority of us would jump at the chance. I agree with you that talking about it at an earlier age and keeping it open and conversational would be the best option.

On heavy meds at the time, she agreed to meet with me. The moment we embraced, she cried and said “forgive me”! I was always tall, tanned , athletic, & a loud, happy, chatty girl who was totally opposite of my siblings. My mother was an alcoholic & told me just a bit about my father during her 12 step program. I didn’t believe her due to her past mismemories. So I found out that he was Irish & tall, tanned, handsome & outgoing. But he & my mom had already passed. She had been divorced & he was Catholic & couldn’t marry her. I still feel alone & separate about family & history. So please check out rumors & act quickly bc you don’t know how much time you have😇

Hamish, your current parents ARE your parents, they loved you, brought you up , gave you your values, education and a home. Not every man is a father and not every woman a mum, people's circumstances are what drives the choices made at a given time. Be thankful that you are not one of the thousand of unwanted or aborted babies. It was heartbreaking watching your birth Mum, who had prayed for you, but she made a decision to give you a better life, hoping that she did the right thing, but she never stopped loving you. I am SO GLAD that you found one another - there are many who don't for many reasons but you get a golden opportunity to have TWO mothers and another culture. Now you can go forward with the missing pieces and connect your daughter with your past and your future. Good luck.

Hamish is "thankful" for his life and upbringing. He needed to know who he is. A part of him is missing. You most likely know who your parents are, but this young man didn't. Have you ever heard the expression "money doesn't buy happiness"...this holds true for many circumstances. How many rich people commit suicide and they have so much to be thankful for, but they are still not complete. I wonder if any of us are ever complete that we can't miss or want anything else.
