2021 Yamaha MT-09 vs MT-10 vs MT-07 | Compared

  • I joined Yamaha Motor Australia for their launch of the 2021 MT models, with the updated MT-07, overhauled MT-09 and continuing MT-10 offering some great options for those after nakedbikes.
    Here's my thoughts on how these three models compare, with the MT-09 majorly overhauled in 2021, representing an enormous step forward, with more power and torque, refined fueling, an extended electronic package, totally new frame as well as a styling overhaul.
    The MT-07's updated are more modest, styling and Euro5, making the bike a little more modern, with full LED lighting, but building on an exceptional package that is the sum of more than its parts.
    The MT-10 on the other hand isn't updated in 2021, but has been an impressive package for a while. *Note: MT-10 footage recorded on a closed private road.

    The new bike is out of this world amazing. Feels much more stable in the twisties . Could be the SP suspension helping. Quick shifter is superb, up and down. Highly recommend the 09SP. Thanks for a great review Kris. The MT09 sounds like it’s come along in leaps and bounds and is now an almost perfect bike for a fantastic price. However, I just can’t fall in love with the looks. Maybe it looks better in the flesh? If I was in the market for a new bike I’d probably wait for the XSR900 as I love the look of the current one.

      I do think it's better in the flesh, maybe because you look more at the whole bike, but at the end of the day looks are pretty subjective. You can't force yourself to like something, and I do think loving the look of your bike is a big part of the experience. New Mt-09 is just about a perfect bike for me on paper. I don't even hate the looks. Wanted to love it. But then I went to a demo day and rode one... and decided I simply don't like triples. Didn't like my buddies Street Triple either. Something about the triple sound or vibes or whatever just doesn't sync up with my mechanical empathy. Hopped on an MT-10 and fell in love with the motor instantly. I wonder if my demo MT-09 wasn't also low on tire pressure. Had to hold slight pressure on the inside bar to hold it on line. The MT-10 was 100% neutral and on rails.
      Lot of people love their triples though. Lesson here is an inconvenient one. You really really have to ride a bike before you can judge it. No amount of research and watching reviews can tell you everything. And can't even start to tell you one of the most important things - the connection you will feel to the motor.

    I've had my MT10 for 3 1/2 years now and the only bike I'd swap it for is an MT10 SP. There was some silly talk last year, about a new MT10 using an 09 engine with a turbo. That seems to have gone now, and I wouldn't have wanted to lose that CP4 sound. The MT10 has one of, if not the greatest bike engines of all time, and I've been riding bikes for well over 50 years. When you really wind that thing up, that sound is utterly addictive and keeping the front wheel down is quite difficult, when first gear is good for over 80mph and over 100mph in second. Just a fantastic bike and the one of my collection, that I choose more often, than any other.

    Thanks Kris, nice review. For me (at 189 cms / 90 kgs, without gear) the MT-07 has never been a bike that works. Yes, I’m outside the “normal” range for a basic budget suspension however even smaller and lighter riders have complained that when pushed it just feels disconnected to the road and doesn’t inspire confidence. I know it’s aimed at learner riders who possibly won’t be able to a) notice this or b) have the abilities to push the boundaries and capabilities of this bike. For me, as I’ve been fortunate enough (like you) to have ridden each bike in this particular class, is the worst handling of them all. Yes it’s light and playful, has an intoxicating sound track thanks to the 270 degree crank, it’s just let down by the suspension and chassis. Which, like you said has improved, just not by much. If only they applied the same treatment that the 09 received, to make it actually handle properly I think it would be a much better package and not cost much more. 👍😎🇦🇺

    • @MotoJournoKris
      @MotoJournoKris  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The MT-09 definitely proves we can get a lot of amazing changes without the price going through the roof. I think the R7 will probably offer most of those updates if I'm honest, and then maybe we'll see some of them adopted onto the MT-07 as well, which would be great and explain why it's relatively unchanged. If the R7 offers something like the RS 660 but at a much lower price point I can definitely see it being very very popular, then we get all the development making it's way to the MT-07 and maybe even the Tracer 700/XSR700.
      I'd say the real strength of the MT-07 though is if you're not pushing past the bike's limits, but of course they are much more easily reached compared to the MT-09 and MT-10, and it's definitely the most basis of the bunch by a fair margin!

    • @MotoJournoKris
      @MotoJournoKris  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      By the wording of the rules here in NSW you're not allowed to modify the bike in any way at all, but it's a risk many people take and from everyone I've talked to it's not normally something people get picked up on, on it's own. If it's an obnoxiously loud exhaust, that tends to draw the wrong attention. It may vary from state to state though.
      That rule covers anything from crash protection to brighter indicators or lights, to spools though, and most second hand bikes are modified in some way, however minor.

    Really interesting to know that the presentation by Yamaha of the MT 2021 range has only just taken place in Australia. I really thought these press presentations were happening all over the world at the same time. But here in France, the MT 07 was presented in Marseille around January 20, 2021 and the MT 09 in the very first days of March 2021 also in Marseille. And they were in dealerships shortly after their introductions.
    I also noticed that the prices were different between Europe and Australia. Here the MT 07 is worth € 7,299 or AU$ 11,503 and the MT 09 is € 9,500 or AU$ 14,972. The MT 09 SP is worth € 10,999, which comes to AU$ 17,335 for the day.
    And here the MT 07 A2 (47.5ps) for young licences is the same price as the "big one" in 73.4ps, while I heard that in Australia the 52 ps version for the new motorcycle licences was less expensive than the normal version. Why, it's not the same bike ?
    Otherwise I wanted to send you my congratulations, your article on these different MT 2021 is very good and your impressions and conclusions are correct.
    I have a personal fight and I would like the journalists to help me a little in this fight, it is about the dashboards of certain motorcycles. For example here with the MT 07 and MT 10, putting an LCD display in 2021 is just a shame when you know the price of TFT screens which has fallen a lot in recent years. And for the new MT 09, putting a color TFT screen this year is good, but 3.5 "... a pure shame!
    When we see that BMW equips its F900R (at 8870 €, therefore cheaper than an MT 09!) With a magnificent 6.5 " TFT color screen with Connectivity, bravo BMW ! And for KTM or Ducati it's the same as at BMW ... but it is true that there the machines are often more expensive.
    In short, some manufacturers, like Yamaha here, make fun of us bikers who are buyers by wanting to save money in order to earn more money. And we deserve better!
    Thanks Kris for helping us in this fight, and bye from France ! ✌

      We have to wait for the bikes to arrive all the way down here, but the MT-07 was available earlier than the launch. Our MT-07 LA is a totally different 655cc engine though, which might explain the price difference.
      I get what you're saying and while I think a TFT is increasingly becoming the norm, to play the devils advocate, phone connectivity is cool but not something I'd personally pay more for, except on a touring bike, if I could sync my GPS to the dash. As you mentioned though the TFTs are becoming fairly inexpensive to produce when we see some of the much smaller machines with them, but then a TFT wouldn't be anywhere near as cool as the dash on the MT-07 as they just tend to be square. The MT-10 is due of course, however we're still waiting for that update.

      We are on the same line and I will not pay more to have a connection between my mobile phone and the dashboard of my bike, but what I wanted to say is that on the BMW F900 R (a motorcycle at a reasonable price and comparable to the price of the MT 09 2021) offered not only a magnificent and large color TFT screen but also the "BMW Connectivity" system without paying an option, and which allows the GPS to be displayed on the dashboard , music, text messages, etc ... that can be managed with the left stalk controls on the handlebar.
      Compared to this, the new TFT display of the MT 09 which is as big as a postage stamp looks shabby ...
      But that was just one example and the motorcycles on which manufacturers are now saving on dashboards (to our detriment) are plentiful, and it didn't exist before. While there is more and more information on the screens ...

      Yep there's a db limit on exhausts as part of the ADRs as far as I know, it may vary by state, it's higher than for cars, and much older bikes get a slightly higher level again. I think it's 94db for bikes here in NSW.
      I haven't seen any roads which prohibit motorcycles yet (not to say there aren't some) but I've seen a fair number of fire trails/trails with signs saying no bikes or motorised vehicles. Kind of! The MT-07 has a more basic suspension setup, so it's a bit softer overall and offers good comfort, if you suit the suspension setup of the MT-07 really well (close to what the engineers designed it for). It's a one size fits all kind of setup and very generalised. The MT-09 is a bit sportier and more taut which in some circumstances may mean less outright comfort, but also probably offers a better overall ride, especially riding hard, with more adjustability to suit more riders.

      Sportsbikes like faired machines, or nakedbikes like the MTs? I think most nakeds are pretty comfortable these days as far as ergos, however the suspension can vary greatly in the setup. • @blockchainshark1392
      @blockchainshark1392 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The hoopla is the mt10 is a waste of money compared to the mt09
      The reason is your buying extra weight which brings reduced agility. Reality is 99% of your riding would be under 100mph. And majority of your riding would be city driving with occasional highway rides.
      That is why the reduced 50 pounds is so important.
      What happens is most people get caught up in "magazine talk". They see hp numbers and get excited about how much the mt10 has .
      But what they don't know is the mt09 is almost identical speed up to 100mph. Only then does the mt10 start to pull away.
      But nobody drive that speed unless they want to kill someone or themselves.
      That speed is for race tracks . So this is why nobody with riding experience buys the mt10
      That's usually purchased buy very young guys who simply want the bragging rights of the HP .
      Torque and reduced weight is what makes a bike truly fun and the Mt 09 has that
      And the fact is if for whatever reason you needed more power power out of the mt09 to match the mt10 then simply flash it and change exhaust.
      A used mt10 is same price as brand new mt09 so that is another bonus.
      The list is endless why the mt09 is better for driving in real world conditions .

      The MT-09 is a lot of bike for the money, but also for a new rider. Even on the MT-07 it's easy to get into trouble, and it's doubly so on the 09. You can run it in wet mode to restrict that down somewhat and the latest MT-09 is the best handling version ever without doubt, but I think you'd need to be exceptionally careful in those early stages, as the MT-09 can really bite you. You could also consider buying a super cheap used 300-400 if that's an option, then upgrade to the MT-09.
      Most riders get tired of their first machine regardless of what it is, whether they've outgrown it, or are even using it to full potential, with that timeline seeming to vary between three months and a few years. It just seems to be a natural progression for most riders, especially those that like performance. Starting on something a bit more basic can be an advantage there, as if you do start on a cheap 300 for instance, you can upgrade to the MT-09 later, and it's also really easy to flog a small capacity bike and learn a lot more.

    • @MotoJournoKris
      @MotoJournoKris  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I definitely wouldn't recommend the MT-10 for a new rider, as much as the handling is amazing, it's an incredibly powerful machine and I would say too much for new riders. If you're considering the Z650 I'd definitely check out the MT-07 as that's a close competitor and a much better place to start within the model range, as a new rider.

      I've often said I think the GSX-S750 is a great machine. I don't think anyone is going to be saying it's objectively 'way better' than the 2021 MT-09 though, but the lower price will make value for money an interesting argument. The GSX-S750 certainly has some decent advantages over the MT-07 HO though. The Suzuki doesn't get the attention it deserves for whatever reason, which has always been a mystery to me. Would be interesting to test one and the new MT-09 back to back...

    • @MotoJournoKris
      @MotoJournoKris  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@wirenut3020 Honestly I think the soft suspension is an advantage on the MT-07, at least at my 70ish kg. Sure it's nowhere near as premium feeling as the Trident, but it'll handle the worst road surfaces with confidence and a good level of comfort. Chasing the sporty suspension feel if not done perfectly tends to just add harshness and impact comfort. Triumph do seem to have done a great job finding the balance though, which really stood out to me. That said I think the Trident will have everyone in the category massively reassessing what they need to offer, or pricing.
      If we see an R7 inspired MT-07 version, like an SP with the up-spec suspension that would be interesting however.

    • @OnlyRemo
      @OnlyRemo 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      For Australia? Definitely not. Our laws will only allow you to legally ride on a 660cc motorcycle, which the MT-10 is well over that (998cc)
      If you're a brand new rider wanting to get into motorcycles, I recommend starting on a 300cc motorcycle or under; they're lite and easy to throw around, very cheap and the best to get your head around the basics.
      Hope this helps you in some way

    • @MotoJournoKris
      @MotoJournoKris  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wouldn't recommend it either. MT-07 if you only get the full power version is what I'd consider the top end of the suitable beginner options, much like the LAMS version we get with less top end. Otherwise something like the 300s or 400s are more ideal and more likely to help you pick up better skills and stay rubber side down.
      The MT-10 is amazing, but especially as a new rider getting totally out of your depth is a quarter throttle turn away.
