  • JD, Scott & Obie are checking out an Indian sport that dates back 4000 years: Kabaddi! On the surface, it's tag. But upon closer inspection, it's awesome.
We watch, we discuss, we rate.

The only reason your Desi (Indian and some Pakistani) friends didn't mention Kabbadi, is because they knew you didn't know what it was, while they thought you might know what soccer/football and cricket were.
We play this as kids in the dirt during recess, and yeah it's rough. It's tag + dodgeball + wrestling. But it's also a professional league in India, and a national sport in a few countries, mostly Indian related countries, Iran, and even Japan and the US occasionally.

You didn't mention that the 'raider' has to make his entire raid within a single breath, thus making his task that bit more difficult. (he also has to demonstrate that he's not doing any further breathing during the raid by repeating the word 'kabaddi' over and over again throughout his raid.

Atleast 5000 yrs old , with new time and point based rules.
Traditionally based on mud ground like wrestling.
Its based on a young boy in battle, who broke 7 layered defence formation. But, he had incomplete knowledge he couldnt get out and was brought down like lions hunting a mammoth.
Its about doing what the boy couldn't do.

@@StreamPunkSports not anywhere though. If u play in rough surfaces the tackles and an all can lead to bad injuries. That's why people here play this on muddy grounds or mats now as it's easier to take damage on them and the soil of our country is also similar.

What you did not mention is that the raider has to hold his breath while he is in the other side, just repeating the word “Kabaddi, Kabaddi…”. He has to come back to his territory inside his one breath. Thus each raid is limited to the length of his one breath.
If the raider loses his breath while in enemy territory, he is out.
The defenders try not to be touched by the raider, or he would be out.
If all the defenders gang up on the raider and prevent the raider from returning to his territory, the raider is out. The defenders gang up on the raider and hold him till he loses his breath.
The raider is down, ganged up below the defenders, he tries to touch the base line before losing his breath. If he succeeds touching the base line, he is not out, but all the defenders who were holding him or had touched him, are out.
