I wish they would release the book that Bilbo, Frodo and Sam wrote. So just the Hobbit and the lord of the rings in the same font with all the illustrations I would love that :0
The best review ever... I didn´t know wich edition of the books were the best. until now.... I already have the Hobbit and LOTR books, but I´ll buy these editions for sure. Thanks for posting.
I live in the US and had to go through 2 connections to order these books. It was well worth the wait, and purchased them before they went up in price. Thank you for these videos.
The other 2 books are: The Silmarillion This is a collection of 5 separate works that describe the backstory and history of Middle Earth and important events, places and characters The Children of Hurin This is a tale set in the first age of Middle Earth and a shorter version of it appears in The Silmarillion
Often there are books with paper that look very premium, but are very inconvenient due to the glossy nature of the paper. Aka it reflects light too well. It seems that with this version of the book, they opted for a proper paper that is less glossy and makes it easier to read.
I believe the version you have is the Harper Collins Hardback Single volume 50th Anniversary edition, ISBN: 978-0-261-10320-7, published in Dec. 2004, goes for about 30-40 dollars. The black leather version with the gold foil and bound pages (instead of glued) is Houghton Mifflin's 50th Anniversary Edition, also published in 2004. ISBN: 0-618-517665-0. It goes for about 90-100 dollars. I think that the Houghton Mifflin version is probably the finest of the three.
Hello i want to ask you about LOTR editions. I want to buy LOTR books its either version in this video or black one with gilded pages. Can you tell me which of the two are better in your opinion and the amount of illustration and maps in the two, which is better option.I was told that deluxe edition was printed in China and that's why is of lesser quality than one from Houghton Miffin.Thank you
Are the pages glossy? and which 50th anniversary edition would you say is better, this or the Houghton Mifflin edition (The leather one with gilded edges, which i suppose is the 50th anniversary edition)
My 50th anneversary edition arrived today. But it's the Houghton Mifflin version, it looks really great. It's the most beatifull book i have ever seen.
@markinovf The black books are: the J.R.R. Tolkien Companion and Guide (Two Volume Box Set) [Box Set] by Christina Scull (Author), Wayne G. Hammond (Author) The white book (actually pale green) is: Tales from the Perilous Realm [Special Edition]
The web page Cuernavilla has it. Hand made. On demand and customizable. You can get it in Spanish or in English. If you are willing to pay its price, of course.
The books seem to be bound really tight, is that disturbing during the first read through them? They'll probably loosen up quite a bit after extensive use though.
Does this book have any collectors value? I see some 3rd party websites selling it for upwards of 200 GBP. I bought this back in 2004 on Amazon (Canada) for only $140 USD...as far as I know mine is a first edition printing and indeed the book for the UK market (identical to UK pics I've seen). I just checked the official Tolkien site and it's on sale for a mere 75 GBP (25 GBP off). It was said it was a "limited run", but 8 years later haha. Honestly, these books are just $ cows for publishers.
At the end of this year the first Hobbit movie will be released. I think it is probably safe to assume that the Tolkien publishers will use the new movies as a reason to make whole new sets of collectors editions. For the same reason, expect collections like these every 10 years on from major Tolkien dates.. publication dates of the books, release date of the movies, tie in with special editions of the movies, year of his death, etc etc.
As someone only just getting in to these books, I'm finding it really difficult understanding the different re-issues of Deluxe Editions. There are these ones from 10 to 15 years ago that have the coloured spine and white covers, but some seem to have been rereleased in new deluxe editions around 2021 to 2022. I got a few of them but I dont know if all of the books will be rereleased in this new deluxe format or should I go ahead and get these older ones for things like Children of Hurin?
what is the difference between the standard and this, is it just the photo foldout? im asking as i am looking for one to read but am worried id pay more for a minor change
The Tolkien Library website (links are in the description) still sells it for 400 euro. The official Harper Collins Tolkien store sells the box also, for 200 pounds.
Wish I had watched this video. I bought LOTR dx separately because I didn't know whether I would like it (both book and this edition), so no point in buying this, but now I regret it. The Hobbit dx, normally standing at 42£ at amazon.co.uk, has been gone for many months now, and I fear it will stay that way. Only option is to buy this set, but it's 200£, and I already have LOTR. The most saddening thing is, that in January when I bought LOTR, this set was, at tolkien.co.uk, only at 120£. DAMN!
@chrismccompositions Yeah it does, you can see it in the movie?? "Since the 50th anniversary of The Lord of the Rings in 2004, HarperCollins has published a series of new deluxe editions of the principal Tolkien works" What you're seeing here is: The J.R.R. Tolkien Deluxe Edition Collection: The Children of Hurin, The Silmarillion, The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings
Quick questions: My 50th Anniversary Edition has a plain red cover, but the dust jacket is black with the Sauron emblem. Do you know what press it might be? The publishing date is 2004. And what's the significance of the one with the black leather cover, with gold foil at the edges? I'd like to get all three but I need to know what I'm looking for. Thank you.
Please try reading the answers to other comments first. You are not the first to ask this. And please do not type in all caps, that makes you look rather immature. You can get this set from the same place I got it from, the link is in the description. For a while the official Harper-Collins Tolkien website ( tolkien . co . uk ) sold this set also for cheaper, but it seems they are sold out at the moment.
"Frodo looked into emptiness. In the black abyss there appeared a single Eye that slowly grew, until it filled nearly all the Mirror. . . . The Eye was rimmed with fire, but was itself glazed, yellow as a cat’s, watchful and intent, and the black slit of its pupil opened on a pit, a window into nothing. . . . Then the Eye began to rove, searching this way and that; and Frodo knew with certainty and horror that among the many things that it sought he himself was one"
@jemimus hi there ! would you recommend me a harper collins edition for the hobbit? the hardcover deluxe, maybe the 70th anniversary, the pack with annotations, a review of the first version? this time around i'm reading it directly from english to avoid strange translations, so... give a hint mate !
I am really jealous of these. My copies are falling apart, they're so bad I'm afraid to so much as breath in them for fear of them crumbling in my hands.
Beautiful books, I'm starting to collect these editions too... Lord of the Rings are my favourite movies but I'm ashamed to say I haven't read it yet so, it's the first I'm getting. They're quite expensive so, I'll have to do it one at a time, but I can't wait to read them all. Thanks so much for this video, it's a great insight into what I'll have to look forward to.
This slipcase edition is very expensive... There is new illustrations version which is released in harper collins last year and that one is 60th anniversary edition I think that one is more better than 50th anniversary edition because the illustrations which is drwan by allen lee is so cool
Unfortunally, Here in Brazil, the Harper Collins Brazil is doing shit with the translations of the new versions of Tolkien's books, like, Orc = Orque and Goblin = Gobelim
I got the Houghton Mifflin 2004 leatherbound but I am envious of yours. By the look Harpercollins seems the superior make (also priced double last I checked).
@abiss86 Then might I suggest this one: The Lord of the Rings - illustrated hardback By J. R. R. Tolkien (google it) It has illustrations by Alan Lee, longtime Tolkien illustrator, who also did a lot of the conceptual design on the movies together with John How
+jemimus Thanks for the quick reply! Two more quick questions? (1) Could you tell me, as its hard to tell from the video: Are they pretty flexible? The Hobbit seems, from your video, like it may have a bit of a stiff binding. (2) Do you know if the updated text for Hobbit and LOTR is really all that different from the text of the 60s and 70s? (Background): I have the Folio Society editions but they are a bit stiff in the binding (at least the Hobbit is), and they're the older text edition. I'm trying to decide whether to get the ones you're showing here, Easton Press editions (also the older text I think), or something else (like the deluxe pocket edition).
+Jeffrey Quinn some of your questions are partially answered in description text of the video. however I will try to find more specific info for you, give me a few days.
+Jeffrey Quinn The binding is quite stiff btw, at least when they are new. they give a satisfying 'crack' sound when you open them up the first time, as sewn bindings tend to do. they are stiff enough to make them not so practical for bed-reading.
Seems like LotR is pretty boring compared to the hobbit with lots of drawings and a fancy map. Im leaning towards the Houghton Mifflin 50th edition as it looks a little nicer.
ItBurns WhenIPEE I just in the past month (they haven’t arrived due to being held in the UK) bought the Silmarillion, Hobbit, and LOTR editions on eBay. I used tax money lol, but they cost me around 220 for all three
Nice review but this is not the deluxe edition of the 50th anniversary book. The delux is Black/Dark Gray and has gold gilded pages. Still a very nice edition though :)
You are describing the US deluxe edition from a different publisher, whilst this is the UK deluxe edition. But you are right, both are equally beautiful...
Came for Tolkein...come back for the ASMR 😅
I wish they would release the book that Bilbo, Frodo and Sam wrote.
So just the Hobbit and the lord of the rings in the same font with all the illustrations I would love that :0
J.R.R Tolkien is my 4th cousin and I am so proud of him.The Tolkien family has a direct link to my family, the Mcentyres! :) and I NEED that book!
The best review ever...
I didn´t know wich edition of the books were the best. until now....
I already have the Hobbit and LOTR books, but I´ll buy these editions for sure.

I agree. There isn't that much 'limited' about them at all. However, it is still a nice set to get.

such a beautiful book, which Is an amazing books one of my favourites.
Nice review! I love LotR, though I can't finish the first book.
the first 200 pages are a bit of a drag
Wish I had watched this video.

Ok thank you for the information. The black one is really gorgeous. As soon as I have the cash to spare I'll be looking for it.

The Houghton Mifflin version is probably the finest of the 50th anniversary additions. I am envious.
@enko87 Yeah I'm giving it a go again, hopefully with more of a success.

12:48 What are the white and black books?
I couldn't find this version of THE CHILDREN OF HURIN available anywhere, either in bookstores or on the internet.
I really wish I could buy one.
what are the books other than lord of the rings and the hobbit called?
Google for this one: 978-0-00-713663-6 , it is in large print and easier to read:
Do you know any website where you can still order the complete box set for a decent price?
Beautiful books, I'm starting to collect these editions too... Lord of the Rings are my favourite movies but I'm ashamed to say I haven't read it yet so, it's the first I'm getting. I prefer the one with the gold pages, a comparison?
I hear that that one isn't as high quality and has poor binding. It is a lot cheaper, though.
This slipcase edition is very expensive...

Hey can you let me know where I can buy that box set! Iif you could it would be so great, thanks!
where do I find a video about the 2004 set?
@abiss86 Then might I suggest this one: The Lord of the Rings - illustrated hardback
By J. R. R. Tolkien (google it)
It has illustrations by Alan Lee, longtime Tolkien illustrator, who also did a lot of the conceptual design on the movies together with John How
What's the difference between them?
i think there is 15 in all
Forgive me if you already answered this (I couldn't find an answer): Are the bindings on these sewn or glued? Thanks!
they are sewn. :)

Im leaning towards the Houghton Mifflin 50th edition as it looks a little nicer.
should have the lost tales, not the children of hurin in this collectors edition
That was a wonderful presentation!
Just one quick note, about the pronunciation of "Hurin" - it HOO-rin, not HUE-rin.
Man these books look so beautiful I wouldn't even want to touch them lol. Does anyone know how much this set cost in USD?
ItBurns WhenIPEE I just in the past month (they haven’t arrived due to being held in the UK) bought the Silmarillion, Hobbit, and LOTR editions on eBay. I used tax money lol, but they cost me around 220 for all three
Nice review, beautiful books, thanks.
@jemimus Thank you
@chrismccompositions No it doesn't.
Such beautiful editions. I'm jealous!
how much was it
Nice review but this is not the deluxe edition of the 50th anniversary book. The delux is Black/Dark Gray and has gold gilded pages. Still a very nice edition though :)
You are describing the US deluxe edition from a different publisher, whilst this is the UK deluxe edition. But you are right, both are equally beautiful...
Can you please let me know where i can purchase all these books now in 2013?
picostan its 2017 now so i dont know how usefull i can be but they are still on the official tolkien website
You can get them cheaper now on eBay & Amazon.
Fantastic video! Thank you so much for making and sharing it.
@thirsokewl Your welcome! Now go buy the box, you really cant go wrong with it ;)
I agree
I trully Want This!
I know you uploaded this a while back. But does the lord of the rings 50th version contain the hobbit?
