    I need to work on my book 📖 collection....your video 📹 motivates me to work on my library.... "The Battle for Middle Earth 🌎 has begun ".... "In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort...@brewingbooks 📚....love your collection

      @@brewingbooks dude, I started a book collection a few years ago. I knew too little when I started, and bought a lot of crap. Now I know what a good book collection is, and I'm in awe of yours. I just bought the Dune deluxe edition with the teal blue and sandy orange cover, and I'm thrilled with it. I don't have enough money to get a Tolkien collection like yours, but there's always time. One book at a time

      I noticed some of the hardback books of Beowulf and Sigurd and Gudrun are smaller too. Really annoying to find them not lining up with the other standard hardbacks. I managed to get Beowulf though in the right size.

    • @stucraig133
      @stucraig133 ปีที่แล้ว

      The quality of the deluxe FoN is pretty marginal. Identical page block to the trade edition and a lower-than-LEGO production quality all round. My first one had a split page corner (the paper split into two layers) and the second had a random splat of gold on the front -- but was signed so I kept it. Unlike the other deluxe edition (except Gawain), the covering paper is not textured.

    Great video! Thank you for this. I think it would now replace the previous "My Complete Tolkien Collection" video and become a new reference point for me. (Still that earlier video is great and loved)
    I was surprised not to hear a note on the additional material in "The Tolkien Treasury" pocket hardback boxed set (by Christina Scull, if I'm not mistaken) which makes the whole set a *must* (a true Treasure, so to say).
    Didn't know the John D. Rateliff's two books are going to be released in Deluxe format. I am very fond of my hardback copies (one of which is extremely hard to find at an accessible price these days). Also, the hardback (with dust jacket) edition of "Tolkien - Artist and Illustrator" is very rare and, if found, expensive today. I went for no more than a paperback edition. And I am happy about that ;-)
    Once again thank you for this great video!

    Amazing collection! Have you ever seen brazillian covers of silmarillion, lotr trilogy and unfinished tales? I personally think the graphic design made for those covers amazing, its recycled images of previous covers but harper collins used hot stamps and the runes are written in bas-relief. Maybe its because we have cultural differences, here we are not fond of dust jackets on the books.

    I'm a really bad reader and picking up The Silmarilion in the library when the films came out put me off ever trying to read his works. But back when Rings of Power was being made and the online Tolkien community came together to denounce it and praise the original source material, it inspired me to get some of the books. Thanks to channels like yours I managed to get a handful, including LOTR, The Hobbit, Silmarilion, Children of Hurin and the letters book. I also have the CDs of Andy Serkis reading LOTR. As I said, I'm not a great reader but I will persevere and I love what I've read so far. I'll never have a collection like yours, but thanks to your videos I can at least pick and choose the ones to go for and I think I'll end up getting Tales from the Perious Realm, Beren and Luthien, and the Fall of Numenor. Thanks for giving such great overviews of the books and showing such a love for Tolkien.

    It has left my wondering if Harper Collins plans to publish what I am going to call 'illustrated slipcase' editions as they have with Unfinished Tales and (the very orange) Silmarillion and the Complete Guide, for the other illustrated books (the Hobbit, the Lord of the Rings, the Fall of Numenor, the Great Tales, the Nature of Middle Earth). Love the standard illustrated hardback editions but not a fan of the deluxe versions. Can't decide between the individual Hitory of Middle Earth books, the 3x volume set or the 3x volume box set? I like the individuals because I think I'm more likely to read them, being smaller, but they'll take a lot of shelf space. The 3x peice box set of the History is nice though as it will sit next to the 3x volume Hammond & Skull Companion & Guide box set. Either way its a future purchase... there's still plenty of other Tolkien editions I'd like first.

After watching your videos I settled on the Standard edition (2022) for the Silmarillion. However, I am debating between the LOTR + Hobbit box set illustrated by Alan Lee or the 75th anniversary Hobbit + the 2021 Standard set LOTR which you all gave fantastic reviews of. What would be your recommendation?

    Such an amazing collection! Yours is what started me on collecting more Tolkien.
    I have a random question though. My first goal has been the Alan Lee illustrated ones that match the box set near the end of the video. I have 3 books so far, The Fall of Gondolin, Beren and Luthien, and The Fall of Numenor. But Gondolin and B&L are smaller and glossy finish where as Numenor is matte and a standard size hardback. Is there a difference in these releases? Because your Gondolin copy looks matte finish. I hope that makes sense lol great collection again!

      Wow thanks so much! As for your query, I had the same issue with The Children of Hurin (which is a gloss dustjacket), while Beren & Luthien and Gondolin are matte. My editions are by Harper Collins (so is Fall of Numenor, which is matte also). Could it be you have the Houghton Mifflin editions of Hurin, Beren & Luthien and Gondolin?

      Worth finding if you can. It is the best quality HarperCollins edition by quite some margin. A lot of the recent deluxe editions have been pretty poor quality, but they absolutely nailed it with the SD coH. Even the not-quite so well executed SD S&G is well worth getting if the opportunity arises (and the material interests you). I'd be surprised if we ever see such editions from HarperCollins again - I think Amazon killed the margins on these kinds of books and the RRP would just need to be insane to revisit this kind of offering.

    why on earth is Children of Hurin the only one in the whole set with a different material for its dustcover. Shiny as opposed to matte. I think they both look good, but I wish they'd stuck with one or the other. Sitting on my bookshelf, it looks out of place.

    • @brewingbooks
      @brewingbooks  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That’s exactly how I felt once I realized it wasn’t matching with the others. Unlike the Houghton Mifflin editions, which all three books use a glossy dust jacket, the HarperCollins ones feature a glossy cover for Hurin, and matte covers for the Luthien and Gondolin books. It’s gotten easier to accept them as they are along years though 😅

      I would say ‘worth’ is very subjective in this case. If you’re keen and set on collecting Tolkien deluxe editions, look up for ones that were made prior to 2015. There are some great editions out there, and make sure you know exactly what a particular deluxe edition, from a specific year, what it contains in terms of content and print quality.
