As someone only just getting in to these books, I'm finding it really difficult understanding the different re-issues of Deluxe Editions. There are these ones from 10 to 15 years ago that have the coloured spine and white covers, but some seem to have been rereleased in new deluxe editions around 2021 to 2022. I got a few of them but I dont know if all of the books will be rereleased in this new deluxe format or should I go ahead and get these older ones for things like Children of Hurin?

Amazing collection to have need to upgrade my paper backs
No sound
Often there are books with paper that look very premium, but are very inconvenient due to the glossy nature of the paper. Aka it reflects light too well. It seems that with this version of the book, they opted for a proper paper that is less glossy and makes it easier to read.
He probably sold both of his kidneys to buy this... It's a very nice edition, but hella overpriced.
I couldn't find this version of THE CHILDREN OF HURIN available anywhere, either in bookstores or on the internet.
I really wish I could buy one.
For anyone buying this small warning: after I opened my package all books were in top condition besides spine damage on the hobbit, this is not a big deal and possibly shipping but it is there.

Nice review but this is not the deluxe edition of the 50th anniversary book. The delux is Black/Dark Gray and has gold gilded pages. Still a very nice edition though :)
You are describing the US deluxe edition from a different publisher, whilst this is the UK deluxe edition. But you are right, both are equally beautiful...

ItBurns WhenIPEE I just in the past month (they haven’t arrived due to being held in the UK) bought the Silmarillion, Hobbit, and LOTR editions on eBay. I used tax money lol, but they cost me around 220 for all three

I hear that that one isn't as high quality and has poor binding. It is a lot cheaper, though.
Seems like LotR is pretty boring compared to the hobbit with lots of drawings and a fancy map. Im leaning towards the Houghton Mifflin 50th edition as it looks a little nicer.

yeah well the edition of all in one volume of lord of the ring is just impossible to read. the book is so huge. it's jut an expensive decorative object. but for reading that's impossible: the stuff is so heavy you can't read in bed, you can't take the book in your bag coz, you cant read in subways etc.. hardcover of 3 volumes of lord of the ring is to me way better. or even better, the real way it was supposed to be , the 7 volume in hardcover: they are thin and easy to use and they still are hardcover of good quality.

Hi. I hope I understand your question correctly. The books are written in British English. The kind of English language used in the 1940's/1950's by an upper-class English person. Some of the words used are no longer used as much. American versions of the Tolkien books do not 'translate' or 're-write' them in any way. They use the original text as it was written originally.

I thought it would be the same as other books that rewrite to a american version or bristish version,thanks you understood my question, about the words that are no more used, a dictionary help me so great. It would be heresy to rewrite Tolkien's work to American English. Unforgivable. Maybe in 150 years or so it may be too archaic for some understand properly, but else it'd be complete heresy

+jemimus Thanks for the quick reply! Two more quick questions? (1) Could you tell me, as its hard to tell from the video: Are they pretty flexible? The Hobbit seems, from your video, like it may have a bit of a stiff binding. (2) Do you know if the updated text for Hobbit and LOTR is really all that different from the text of the 60s and 70s? (Background): I have the Folio Society editions but they are a bit stiff in the binding (at least the Hobbit is), and they're the older text edition. I'm trying to decide whether to get the ones you're showing here, Easton Press editions (also the older text I think), or something else (like the deluxe pocket edition).

+Jeffrey Quinn The binding is quite stiff btw, at least when they are new. they give a satisfying 'crack' sound when you open them up the first time, as sewn bindings tend to do. they are stiff enough to make them not so practical for bed-reading.
there are so many Tolkien books I want to read, but I want to own physical copies, not borrow or buy digitally. if only I could afford all twelve history of middle earth books in hardcover

+Nikola Milutinovic It depends which book you mean. But things like this, are worth what the market will tolerate. its supply and demand. Just look around really well, Ebay, Amazon, Tolkien forums. If you can find it cheaper, that is great. if you cannot, then that is, apparently, what it is worth.

Leather editions are worth it. These I would skip.
