  • Join us as we check out the first two episodes of Ahsoka (aka Star Wars Rebels Season 5). Rosario Dawson is back as the titular jedi (or technically not a jedi anymore) Ahsoka Tano and is joined by the live action counterparts of characters that we grew to love (and hate) in Rebels as well as some new ones. Mary Elizabeth Winstead is Hera Syndulla, Natasha Liu Bordizzo is Sabine Wren, David Tennant is Huyang, Ray Stevenson is Baylan Skoll, Ivanna Sakhno is Shin Hati, Diana Lee Inosanto reprises here role in The Mandalorian as Morgan Elspeth and
Lars Mikkelsen is the quietly intimidating Grand Admiral Thrawn.
Also, if you want to watch our full, uncut reaction to Ahsoka you can join our Patreon https:www.Patreon.com/JabyKoay or join our memberships on TH-cam. Additionally, we have Andrew and Achara's reaction to Rebels there as well :)

    "Sabine wouldn't whine like this."
What?! Did you SEE the episodes where Kanan tried to teach her?? Sabine is as stubborn and complaining as they come, and that's not a trait that changed during her arc in Rebels. She constantly fought against going back to Mandalore, facing her family, and owning up to what she did and taking her responsibilities with the dark saber. Everything she did in these episodes is totally in character.

So glad you guys finished Rebels before Ahsoka! That said, HOLY FREAKING CRAP, THESE TWO EPISODES FELT LIKE A FULL LENGTH THEATRICAL MOVIE!
If it wasn’t evident before, these 2 episodes prove that Dave Filoni is the true apprentice and successor of George Lucas. His eye for the details of the same classic samurai films that inspired Lucas is all over this show. What’s really surprising is that these episodes are made in a way that even people who didn’t see Rebels can get into this show without being lost, while hardcore fans like myself who watched it from day one are well and truly rewarded for watching it from beginning to end.
And the actresses for Ahsoka, Sabine and Hera are absolutely perfect! I especially love that Clancy Brown got to play the same character he voiced in Rebels.

Also, Rosario is leaning in to Ahsoka's regalness and deliberate nature because that is the way her director, Dave Filoni, directed her to play the character. And this character is his creation. A few things....this want or expectation for 'microwave' storytelling has to stop. Do not compare this show to 'Rebels' which was an animated show. They are not the same. The writers are laying out a story which clarifies what has happened between Star Wars Rebels and Ahsoka. We don't know what happens moving forward so please let the story be told. Secondly, Sabine is not force sensitive. We have not seen this yet. She was being trained on how to use the Dark Saber and subsequently a lightsaber. I wouldn't expect her to wield the force, but we will see. Also, a lot of Sabine's fighting ability is dependent on her Mandalorian armor so it shouldn't be a shock that she struggled in hand to hand combat without it.

Regarding Sabine whining. Sabine had always been ultra talented. She literally built a super weapon in middle school. She's hyper competent is just about everything that she does. Then she becomes Ahsoka's padawan and it turns out her force sensitivity is pretty weak. Then her master breaks it off. In her mind, She goes from being a prodigy to being such a failure that her master quit on her. Yet despite her lack in attitude we know it means something to her because as I think you guys mentioned she went for the lightsaber rather than her mandalorian armor/gear or even the gun that she already had in her hands. When she boarded Ahsoka's ship she looked around nostalgically and at the end of the show when she called her padawan you can see the reaction it got from her.
So she kinda sucks at the thing where wants to do, her mentor already walked away once and she's already pissed her off. I think Sabine is feeling sorry for herself and trying to protect herself from getting dumped again.

I love Sabine, but not sure how I feel about her being a Force-wielding Jedi. It’s a bit over complicated for one character. Mandalorian, explosives expert, artist,…and also a Force user? She doesn’t need Force powers to wield a lightsaber. It could be cooler for her to be a Jedi-trained fighter who doesn’t ever use the Force. Just action scene after action scene, no time for us to get to know the characters, and ultimately leading to the viewers not being emotionally invested when/if someone dies or accomplishes something significant. I have to say while i haven't agreed with all of your takes up to where o an now, i do have to thank you for giving specific examples when you says something was slow. Often i hear people say if it was slow but they don't far when. I personality think it was perfect for what it was trying to do. But i appreciate knowing what people thought made it "slow"
That said it's important to remember that a lot of people look down on animation and just won't watch rebels no matter how good the show is simply won't watch an animated show. So they have to allow me viewers learn in 90 minutes what we did in all of clone wars and rebels.
Also the reason Ahsoka didn't rush after sabine is because despite everything she trusts Sabine. I imagine she probably would have given her the night to try to figure it out before going to find her. We see it again at the hospital with the droid head. Ahsoka takes the head to her because she knows she can get the data. Then while she's working she seems the most confident of the three of them that sabine will get what they need. Literally to the point that she lets her work on a bomb from her hospital room.
Besides I don't think that Ahsoka was particularly eager to tackle the elephant in there room. Look at all the awkward tension between them. The governor of lothal felt the need to tell Sabine listen to her. They stood around for almost 30 seconds in awkward silence each trying to figure out what to say to the other. This was done on purpose. They filmed a conversation here which they showed on the teaser trailer but ended up cutting it to increase the awkwardness/tension.
I also don't think ahsoka called Hera. 100% it was Hera calling. She gave them the day to try to work through their mess before she called to see how things were going between them. Hera says it during the call "with your history you should have known". In literally every conversation she's had, Hera had stepped to push them back together. On home one, over the call, on the hospital, and on correllia.

There’s no way Sabine was defeating Shin Hati. She hasn’t trained as much as her. Sabine’s training is at a halt. She doesn’t listen much and thinks she can do it by herself. Almost like what Ezra would do. She just needs to listen to Ahsoka

The show is slow pace, with similar outlook as mandolorian is because not everyone watched clone wars and rebels... Some of us... Such as me as well got into starwars hardcore since 2020. Yeah I had followed star wars before... But not religiously....
