- It's time for episode 4 of Ahsoka (aka Star Wars Rebels Season 5). Rosario Dawson is back as the titular jedi (or technically not a jedi anymore) Ahsoka Tano and is joined by the live action counterparts of characters that we grew to love (and hate) in Rebels as well as some new ones. Mary Elizabeth Winstead is Hera Syndulla, Natasha Liu Bordizzo is Sabine Wren, David Tennant is Huyang, Ray Stevenson is Baylan Skoll, Ivanna Sakhno is Shin Hati, Diana Lee Inosanto reprises here role in The Mandalorian as Morgan Elspeth and Lars Mikkelsen is the quietly intimidating Grand Admiral Thrawn.

Sabine's main goal is to find Ezra guys. Calm down. It tracks. She doesn't have the constitution of a padawan who's been training since a child. Of course she gave in. She probably loves Ezra more than any of the Ghost crew.
Add that we just found out her entire family died ofcourse she would do anything to get Ezra specially since its hinted at that her family's death is a major reason Ahsoka and Sabine fell off originally.
Also Sabine fighting Baylan would PROBABLY have looked like Reva getting SPANKED by Vader in episode 5 of Kenobi

I disliked her since the first episode. if that was the intention of the writers they have succeeded. She is incredibly selfish and stupid.
Courtney doesn't understand Sabine's character at all. Sabine is someone who once betrayed her own people to build weapons for the Empire, left to became a bounty hunter, and has lost her entire family and planet.
She has also gone through a lot since the events of Star Wars: Rebels, she lost everything she once had, plus she has a history of making flawed decisions.

When Kanan was captured at the end of Rebels season 1, the entire crew went against Hera's orders to not rescue him, because Kanan isn't just a rebel/soldier, he's family.
When Thrawn attacked the Rebels at Atollon and Ezra sought help from Clan Wren, Sabine chose to go back with him, even though it's strategically unsound and her blood family was unwilling to commit their own forces to the effort, because the Ghost crew is her family too.
There are precedents of Sabine choosing family over tactical and strategic rationality. Her decision to help Baylan is just yet another example of why Sabine is thoroughly Mandalorian and not Jedi material: family is the core of the Mandalorian creed, a key cultural trait in direct opposition to the Jedi tenet of not having emotional attachments. She's in keeping with the Way, just not the Jedi way.
Bestly put comment. The Armorer and Dinn have the exact same conversion you mentioned in your second paragraph. Mandalorians have strong attachments, as opposed to Jedi.
I'm a bit tired of ppl thinking they know these characters more than Dave Filoni. Also we don't know all the backstory details yet halfway through the series. Maybe wait until the end of the series to judge the actions & motivations of Sabine.

Indeed. I disagree about _necessarily_ needing to wait - it's OK to judge characterisation in the here and now IF the show isn't giving you a reason _not_ to do so. But to me this show clearly IS depicting Ahsoka and Sabine on a journey towards rediscovering and reclaiming themselves - they're both somewhat lost and _not_ themselves and we've been given good, plausible reasons as to why.
In other words, to me at least, even here at the halfway point we _already_ have enough "backstory details" to understand why this isn't _meant_ to be the Sabine we knew from 'Rebels'. Some fans just seem to want the characters to be frozen in amber rather than having any kind of arc.

Regarding Sabine, you have to understand that her parents died. In fact, her planet "was destroyed", as far as she knows. Of course she's much more traumatized and tends to make irrational/emotional decisions. She was never a Jedi (in terms of maturity) nor had the balance of an Obi-Wan or Ahsoka. She suffered a trauma far worse than any Jedi. Anakin turned to the dark side. Baylon told Sabine: Your planet was destroyed because your Master didn't believe in you." What is the story here?
You can't imagine what it's like to have your planet destroyed and witness everyone die, including family, parents, and siblings. She's not the same person as in Rebels. Even Ahsoka is different. She's more mature and traumatized. Sabine is just more traumatized and full of suffering.

People getting mad at sabine is so freaking annoying, as if she has been training every day of her life. Shes been out of practice for over a year. You dont just pick it back up after a few days.
Her fall has been forshadowed especally with her being a mandalorian. She prioritized ezra over her master beacuse of what had happened with her family on Mandalore

I love how so many people are letting their own emotions get the better of them instead of thinking with a tactical mind. It makes no sense especially after we see exactly how durable that map actually is to let yourself be killed attempting to destroy it. Especially when you're against to Superior opponents who clearly have you outmatched just yeeted your master off of a cliff. The Tactical strategy is to do what Sabine did

@@bemasaberwyn55Yes but rewind 20 seconds. When Sabine arrives Shin Hati is knocked out; it’s 2 on 1, Sabine and Ahsoka’s advantage. Yes, Ahsoka is cornered but Baylan Skoll has his back turned and is fully occupied fighting her. All Sabine had to do was open fire on hjm; he’d either get shot in the back or have to turn away to deflect it, giving Ahsoka a chance to recover.
She didn’t BETRAY Ahsoka!!!! She’s heartbroken and not thinking clearly. She’s lost soooo much and just wants her friend back. And she believes that Ahsoka was just killed.

Didn't Ezra sacrifice himself to put Thrawn away and now Sabine is literally going to undo that, just so she can be comfy? Nah she a snake.
Also - she was clearly being influenced by Balen - who basicaslly read her mind, and then could use Jedi powers to influence. Who is to say she could even have destroyed it - Balen is clearly powerful enough to have moved her hand as soon as he felt her about to squeeze the trigger so she missed (not to mention the fact that it took nearly 10s for a lightsaber directly through it to do enough damage - a single blaster's blast would do nothing). Her options were, basically, hope she could destroy the map without Balen killing her (then be killed herself) - setting back some of the enemy plans (but given they had like 75% of the calculations complete, this might not even be a significant setback); then get killed herself meaning Hera et al would have no chance of stopping them. Or this - hope there would be another way to track them, that Ezra and her could team up and come up with a better plan in this distant galaxy.

Ahsoka didnt have as much attachment to Ezra as Sabine did which is why Sabine chose not to destroy the Orb and she couldn't have run away as well.. so she gave in, doesnt mean she joined the enemy. Also Ahsoka show is set more than 10 years after rebels, this is not the same Sabine and she has been out of practice for a while. So i think saying this is not the same Sabine is a nitpick.

Saying Sabine is not the same isn't just a nitpick it's annoying. She's been through a lot since Rebels. I find Sabine to be more like Sabine then I do Ahsoka like Ahsoka.
Both actresses' are doing fantastic however and this show is great. For me this is almost as good and in some ways better then Andor. Maybe saying its just as good but different is more accurate.

We just found out that Sabine entire family died and thats a big hint why Ahsoka and Sabine originally fell off. As soon as they mentioned Sabine's family i knew she would give in to get Ezra back.

@@watchmesquatch Don't think so, but, if you do, it's ok. A lot of things happened that we know and some that we don't know that affected her deeply. And usually some hard experiences in life change us, for better or worse. This is the way that I see that, and I'm ok with that, with some character changes, and this changes it's not comming for some random director to fuck up the characters (like our last 3 movies), it's by a director that created all these characters and know deeply all of them. So, that all said, it's fine for me.

@@watchmesquatch i said Sabine got older. I never said she matured or whatnot. She lost Ezra, she lost Mandalore, her and Ahsoka may have had a falling out. She sheltered herself on Lothal in depression possibly. She locked away her past because it brought too much hurtful memories and feelings of loss. She stopped training, stopped wearing her Mandalorian armour etc.
But to say "this is not the Sabine from Rebels" is somewhat false expectation because she was a kid back then, she's a woman now.
Exactly. This is the Hera that survived a brutal war. This is the Ahsoka that's riddled with guilt at leaving Anakin and visibly carries the weight of that and what he then became (personally I suspect she doesn't know any better yet i.e. - staying vague to avoid spoilers - that this is _between_ her first two live action appearances). This is the Sabine that lost her chosen family _and_ her blood family along with her planet and entire culture (as far as she knows) and now sees a chance to get at least part of that back.
Some fans seem unable to internalise those character developments because they didn't actually _see_ them happen but to me the show (and actors) have actually done a great job depicting the results.

This is a Sabine who lost Kanen, Ezra, and her family in the purge of Mandalore. If you have a shot to bring a piece of that family back, would you take it.

I like this channel but Courtney’s vibe just completely ruins the reactions. No one wanted Sabine to give up the map, but it’s completely understandable why she did, it doesn’t make her a traitor. Ahsoka said if we can’t go to the other galaxy we should destroy the giant hyperspace ring. Sabine thought Ahsoka was gone and there was no way she could destroy the ring by herself. This way she gets to go. She did not betray Ahsoka like WTF?
And I’ve noticed in many many reactions Courtney gets shit wrong, Star Wars details we all know, she gets wrong all the time and doesn’t even get called out. Supposedly a big Star Wars fan yet always confused by character motivations, it’s really annoying.

I swear, Andrew is the only rational person here sometimes. Seriously, if Sabine destroyed the map, then what happens? Roll credits, cut to Thrawn and Ezra in another galaxy sitting on a beach? Then the last 3 episodes is Ahsoka returning to Sabine's funeral, then head off to Luke's rock temple to become a kindergarten teacher? Unreal, media literacy is dying right in front of us.
I think it is exactly what it appears to be guys and what Andrew was saying. Sabine got invested again in Ahsoka's quest because of the chance to save Ezra. Not to stop Thrawn. Clearly a lot has happened between the end of Rebels and this show, Sabine has lost a lot of people close to her and is at a pretty low point on Lothal. Baylan preying on her emotional vulnerabilities and pushing her buttons clearly worked and manipulated her into making that flawed decision. I disagree that it's dumb, just flawed and I reckon borne out of her desire to redeem herself for not being able to save her family. Also, the Jedi talk about not having attachments and making sacrifices like it's no big deal but it's clearly not the reality. No way in hell any of us would make a different call in that moment. She's only human.

Ezra's disappearance greatly affected Sabine in the Rebels finally. Plus it's been at least ten years since Rebels were she lost her entire family, her planet, and had a falling out with Ahsoka. Here clinging to the last chance to find Ezra makes sense. Her final words in Rebels are "Ezra's out there somewhere, and it's time to bring him home."
Shin Hati was rattle by Marrok's death, because she didn't know that is was Nightsister magic that controlled him.
and funny how baylon called elsbeth's powers witchcraft when most normies in the sw universe find jedi powers to be nothing short of sorcery 🙂
They subtly acknowledged Ahsoka would not let Sabine go to Mandalore because she didn't believe she was ready and would use the force properly. Sabine's family all die there because she obeyed, leading to their falling out.
Ezra is family and while Sabine knows Ahsoka is right, she is not going to let her missing brother disappear without knowing.
I hope that she has a tracking device or Hera and put the ghost of a space whale and follow them as it is their migration path they are following.
Sabine wasn't going to stop what happened on Mandalore. We saw that the planet was absolute taken by siege, one lone soldier wouldnt' change that, nor save her family.

In the first World Between Worlds, Ahsoka didn't originally die. The Rebels producers/Filoni/someone up there mentioned there's no actual time travel here, it's what fiction calls closed-loop time travel: like the Avengers in Endgame, what Ezra did was meant to happen all along. Ahsoka was always meant to be saved before Vader could strike her down.
Well, there _is_ "actual time travel". A closed loop just means _when_ you time travel you don't change anything. But I get what you mean :).
Did you want Sabine to take on 2 force users without at least SURVIVING LONG enough to see how she could stop their plans? 🙄
IKR? I've seen so many people harping on Sabine about this and I'm thinking to myself is literally outmatched. She just saw her master get yeeted off of a cliff and even after she surrendered shin had to get her licks in by force choking her. She had no idea when or even if Hera was going to be able to show up practically speaking the mission was done at that point
Girl has had maybe a week of training after over a year, so she's not gonna be where she was in rebels, on a side note, I wish she kept her helmet on more especally at the end
@MyHumaniity the training doesn't really matter, though, either. If you're fighting someone that is much more powerful in the force than you you're going to lose. I could train all I want to fight Mike Tyson but I'm still going to get killed....

To answer Acharas question of why Ahsoka is so special, in the clone wars arc about the gods of the force, the god of the light side gave up her physical form and had to make ahsoka her new physical form to bring Ashoka back to life after the dark side god killed her.

'that's not sabine' yeah you're right, thats not the sabine we know from rebels bc this is 10 YEARS LATER. things have happened in the interim we haven't seen. things that the show is alluding to and slowly revealing. also, y'alls take on sabine giving baylan the map is so incredibly simple and reductive it beggars belief. its not as simple as 'just dont give the map to him' lmao. the choice is supposed to be difficult and nuanced. if sabine destroys the map, NO ONE can reach ezra or thrawn, and we know sabine desperately wants ezra to return. if she doesn't destroy it, yes the villains will be able to reach thrawn, but she also has the possbility of hitching a ride directly to ezra - remember nobody else posesses a vessel capable of a hyperspace jump of that magnitude. sabine isn't ahsoka, she isn't making a choice in the context of the wider galaxy like a jedi would, she's thinking of herself and the ones she loves. sabine made the logical choice, though it may be a questionable one with potentially terrible consequences. wether its right or wrong is a matter of opinion, but reducing it down the way y'all (and especially courtney) have is so unproductive and just attests to some very poor media literacy skills. characters are supposed to have flaws, what is the point in watching otherwise, if they don't grow beyond them?

He told them to stay together for exactly this reason. Ashoka briefly gave into her anger and got beat and Sabine allowed Baylan to manipulate her.

Part of being a jedi is letting go of personal attachment. Sabine isn't ready, so it's obvious why she doesn't have the force or is a jedi by now. Many would do the same thing given the situation. That's why none of us are jedi 😂

I think people need to remember this is a Sabine who lost everything. Kanan died. Ezra disappeared. Hera left to help lead the Rebellion. Her family died during the Purge of Mandalore. And then Ahsoka left her.
She's been on Lothal alone thinking about Ezra for a WHILE. It's unsurprising she is prioritizing finding him.

Baylan Skoll is very quickly becoming one of my favorite characters in all of Star Wars. It’s genuinely impossible for me to get a read on him. He is bringing Thrawn back which he knows will start a war, but he’s not a true believer in the Empire and he looks like he doesn’t really care about the war either way. Even his fighting style is incredibly different from other Jedi, his stance more closely resembles that of English knights while Ahsoka’s is more akin to samurai.
As for the ENDING! As soon as I saw the unusual waves emitting from around Ahsoka I said “no….no, no, no, no, no” and then the camera panned up showing The World Between Worlds and I was silent, until I heard “Hello, Snips” and I teared up at the sight of Anakin.
God I just wish Ray Stevenson lived to see how his performance looked on screen. Rest In Peace Ray you will never be forgotten.

I could be remembering wrong but I think at the end of rebels Sabine said she thought she was supposed to protect lothal when Ezra said “I’m counting on you” then she was like he’s counting on me to find him. So that’s why I think she gave them the map. She thinks he has a plan or this is just what he wants. But yeah I was screaming inside for her to not give it to them
Sabine is not only emotionally compromised as a "jedi learner", she is also compromised as a Mandalorian by fighting without a jet pack......Baylan hardly had to manipulate her to give in because she actually wants to.

The more Cortney says "this is not like Sabine" the more I think she doesn't know who Sabine is.

Sabine has been clearly emotionally compromised from when we first meet her in this series. Ahsoka knew this. The fact Ahsoka had to ask her if she could count on her shows that even Ahsoka knew. Ahsoka perhaps assumed "the greater good" would overcome Sabine's feelings, but they didn't. Why? Because she's loyal to a fault, stubborn... and compromised.
I once read that there were 10,000 Jedi across the Galaxy when The Clone Wars began, but after Order 66 happened only about 300 survived, & only a handful of those were still alive by the time of Episode 4 A New Hope.

Not sure where you got that 300 number from but the 10,000 number is from rebels.
In current canon we’ve had around 50ish survivors of order 66 so far (not including inquisitors) and most of those are dead by new hope.

Around a new hope there's definitely less than 50 "Jedi" left but even then only about 10 of them probably call themselves Jedi while the rest are just Survivors that started new lives

I don’t agree with Cortney’s take on Sabine. Her character tracks very well with Rebels and also the events between that and the show
- She was an outcast and rejected by her family, because of the weapon she created. She has a lot of issues because of this.
- The Ghost crew became her family, only at the end of rebels S3 she was able to make peace with her mother and the rest of her family.
- She (with Chopper) “allowed” Ezra to go surrender to Thrawn, against Hera’s orders. Then they disappear.
- Ezra says to her a few times “I’m counting on you”. Before the final battle, and in the hologram messages. She feels responsible but doesn’t know what she has to do. That’s why she stays in Lothal, guarding Ezra’s home. All of this is in Rebels.
- We learned that Sabine’s family is death. Something happened, at least from her perspective they are dead “because her master didn’t trust her” (Baylan’s words).
Obviously the “right” and sensible choice was destroy the map, that should be the decision of a Jedi. This is also foreshadowed in the conversation between her and Ahsoka at the ship. Is also kind of similar with Anakin’s struggle: saving the ones you love against doing what you should do.

Come on if you seen rebles you would understand how strong Sabine and Ezra relationship really is I mean we also heard in this episode that Sabine lost her entire family in mandolore but in rebles she lost her adopted father who was 'Kanan' and Ezra was like her adopted brother and he is family to her but thoes two really went through a lot and that they everything together near the end and after everything she had she lost it all. The you see here that she was now givin another chance to find her long lost brother ( although I still feel that maybe she maybe like Ezra more than her own brother) then again I can also see that Sabine might be doing this to get along with the plan so she could find Ezra not to side with the enemy. I won't lie that I almost teared up when she gave up the map for Ezra becuase that shows us how close thoes two are together but to me that my poibt of view in the desion she made and I know it may be stupid but you tell me if you were on her own place could you have done the same for you own family that you lost and if you were givin another chance would you do it.

@@preciousotoakhia9789 Ashoka doesn’t really know them that well and is reluctant to actually ask for help unless absolutely necessary, and while Baylan may have been concerned that Luke might get involved it wasn’t an immediate concern at the time so there would be no reason to bring it up.
Her family is stated here to have died on the night of a thousand tears. So giving in on the the chance to save someone she cares about doesn’t seem far fetched for Sabine.
Ahsoka was quite literally about to die right when Ezra pulled her out.

I think Burdizzo made really a good job showing the uncertainty and the conflict in Sabine. I was really involved looking at her, even if I knew she would have given up at the end. At the same time I think her choice was realistic. The only chance she had to have the upper hand with Baylan was to destroy the map immediately, and she failed (which is understandable, being it the only chance to save Ezra too). Going with the villains was actually the only choice to keep alive some hope to rescue Ezra and disrupt their plans eventually.
Sabine had the choice of destroying the map and dying right there and then by Baylan or Shin or giving them the map and possibly seeing Ezra again.

Marek was a resurrection of a dead Inquisitor by most likely Morgan Elsbeth, a night sister. Night Sisters have the ability to bring back the dead, but in the way that Palpatine or Vader were not interested in (think zombie). Watch Clone Wars Season 4 episode "Massacre" for reference. It’s completely believable for Sabine to make the choice she did. She grew up fighting a rebellion where the goal was to protect your friends, the people in the trenches with you. The big-picture galaxy stuff was always esoteric. This in total contrast to Ahsoka, who was conditioned in a formal setting to think of the greater good of others at the expense of her own personal desires. Ashoka’s willingness to sacrifice Ezra for the Big Idea, and Sabine’s refusal to, goes straight to the core of who these characters are, bringing years upon years of character building to a head in one epic decision. Fabulous episode, great reaction!
Ahsoka faced Marrok on Corellia. She knows what form to use, as we see.
Against Baylan’s strength she needs two hands on the hilt. She combines her agility with a strong defense. She loses advantage when she burns her hand. With only one hand on the hilt she cannot defend against Baylan’s strength. And then…Ahsoka is not as balanced as she would like to think

All I'm hearing is, "She should have..." every five minutes, and it's annoying as hell because if every character did what they were supposed to, unhindered by emotion or not influenced by others, it would make for a very boring story, jeez!
Of course this is Sabine. Her only goal is to find Ezra. Otherwise why would she be there to begin with. It took Ahsoka mentioning to Sabine the map could find Ezra to get her involved at all.
I knew as soon as she didn’t shoot it and Ahsoka went over the ledge that she was going to give it to Baylon. It was very clear and completely within her character

Sabine has lost her entire family on Mandalore, Kanan, and she lost Ezra and blames herself. She has a chance to get her only family left back, she will take it.
Hang on: You're Sabine. You just saw your Master killed. You can't possibly defeat the warrior who killed her. You're holding in your hand the key to finding your beloved family member, which you may or may not be able to destroy, and were roundly blamed for losing. Now this strangely compelling Force master is offering you the chance to take the journey you've set out on, where you expect to encounter a very dangerous foe, but also an extremely powerful new Jedi. You can die here, or, by handing over the map, you can kick the can down the road to a future where you may have the opportunity to make things right.
And I never once bought the idea that Ahsoka was right about abandoning Ezra to prevent Thrawn's return. When has it EVER been Phoenix Squadron's way to abandon one of their own just to avoid facing an enemy, however smart?

Remember the Mortis gods arc of TCW Ahsoka did die but the Daugther breathed her life into Ahsoka but Morai bird wasn't seen yet.
I can completely understand Sabine's choice, since this episode confirmed that Sabine lost her actual family on Mandalore to the purge, the Night of Thousand Tears committed by the Empire, and she's now even more committed to finding Ezra who's like a family to her, so she naturally couldn't get herself to destroy the map. And It's not like she could have run away from Baylan & Shin with the map either.
My guess is based on how Shin reacted to learning Morgan is a night sister, she was unaware he was a spirit and not living. It was the shock
Whether Sabine destroyed the map or not Ahsoka would still have been kicked off that cliff. Imo it's better to join the bad guys and make sure Thrawn is dead than just hope he stays gone, they'd keep looking for him anyway with or without the map. Sabine isn't force sensitive and she isn't the traditional jedi so I can see her killing Thrawn. Everyone underestimates her. If Ahsoka's orders made it so that Sabine wasn't able to save her family, I can see her trying to do what's right by Ezra no matter the consequences.
