I did this today, once you point the installer to the game's directory, it's straight forward from there.

thanks a lot man. I only just started with tomb raider series, and i wanted to start from the very beginning. But the game does not work on modern machines, so I had to start with tr 2 (I am halfway through). But now i can play the first one as well. thanks again.

I'm replaying tomb raider 1 and 2 again on steam, a few years ago i was trying to get this to work on steam was very hard and confusing for me, i forgot how i did it but it was very different than this method, this one makes it super easy to do. Going to replay all orginal Tomb Raider 1 2 3 games before i play the remastered version coming out 2024, i saw the trailer, it looks pretty cool, but to be honest i prefer the blocky lara since that how i original played the game back than, but with new remastered version, this will make it play on modern machines without any patchs mods i belive it can run at 60fps
i'm glad it can help out, i'm really looking forward to the remasters to see what they've done with it but these version will always be dear to me and for speedrunning :D

I have frame pacing issues with these versions. I ran Fraps though with it showing a solid 30 fps . Anyone know or experience this and know of any solutions?
I made everything but when I try to lunch the game it shows "ERROR: 0:4: 'layout' : syntax error syntax error" and doesnt start. How can I fix it?
hmm i'm not sure of this error :/ have you tried completely uninstalling it from steam and then redoing it, also are you doing the T1X patch or the TombAti one?

How do you install texture packs on TR1X?
sadly atm Texture packs are only compatible with Tombati and not TR1X :( but they are hoping to add texure packs to TR1X in the future :D
I am searching for any advice, I am following these instructions I get as far as choosing installation source, I select where the file is under steam and it still says in red writing "not found" even though I have selected it. Next is grayed out :(
the quickest way to fix this is make sure the installer is on the same drive as the game, when you click change, you will head to This PC > Local Disk(C:) or the drive with your game on > Steam > steamapps > common > Tomb Raider (i) make sure to click the TR1 folder and then click select folder at the bottom, that will fix it :)
The GitHub description says the Steam version doesn't ship with the music files, how does that affect the game is it totally quiet? What did you do about this part of information.
Actually what are the differences between these two patches?

@@GHoleary619 Hey yeah I finally decided to bite the bullet and start installing T1M to some backup files and I saw that option, I guess I took the download of git for nothing lol. When it comes to ports and patches of these old games, I've found it really important to find places where you can read the history of the versions in comparison to the community, I couldn't have rebuild Deus Ex without that info on the past versions and the genetics of the fan modding projects, so thank you for this link, I'll be sure to pour over this in the future. I wonder now if there's any way to bring this patch back to my Steam architecture so that I can run the patched game right from Steam, without going the "add non-Steam game" route.

How do you get the textures to work with Tomb1Main? You only showed how you intalled them via TombATI.
so it looks like i made a mistake with this and Tomb1Main, i'm sorry for that, heres a link to where they talk about it but apparently in terms of texture packs they're listed as "ETA" github.com/LostArtefacts/Tomb1Main/issues/347
alternatively there are some mods you can do with Tomb1Main that you can find here : core-design.com/community_modding_tr1.html

hello again, i was able to install both TR1 and 2 on steam perfect and working with this method, but how do you enable it to recognize on steam and count the "Recent Activity" and the "play time" count, usually when i start up the tomb raider 1.exe on steam it works normal and does it, with this it doesn't? can you please help me out. Thanks
so if you're keeping it in your steam folder then after you replace all the files you CAN click launch on steam and it should work like normal :)

This may have given me the ability to use a control pad, but the buttons are all messed up. Rolling will either automatically draw pistols or holster them, for example, and a few other annoying combinations. Doesn't appear to be an easy fix unfortunately.
This has happened to me many times and it’s usually down to another controller support clashing with Tomb1mains native support, are you using any controller clients?
Don't know what you mean by controller clients, but I've just got it to work - and it turns out it way an easy fix after all. I just used my 360 controller instead of my PS-3 controller and everything's now perfect. Yay. Thank you! @@GHoleary619

need a guide for all the og games, mans struggling to setup tr3 D:
so i'm planning to make a guide for TR3 once i have everything locked down in terms of fixes, in the mean time you can download this one github.com/Trxyebeep/tomb3/releases/tag/V2.0.2 and extract its contents to your TR3 game directory and replace everything, in terms of controller support, it does NOT have native so you will need to use either Steams one (click the cog of the game, properties, controller and ENABLE steam input)

It can't be this hard and complicated to setup a 30 year old game to work properly. Joytokey is completely confusing and difficult. I don't even know what to do. F this!
Some of these games do not have automatic controller support... Helped Me 😅
sadly these can be, with Tomb1Main it's the easiest to get your controller working
with JoyToKey, what you want to do is when connected, press a button on your controller and the button on JoyToKey will start highlighting every time you press the button, you then double click it and map it to the button needed for the game
with JoyToKey tho, you can actually map these to ANYTHING and then change your in game settings controls
so you would go into the controls screen in TombATI and use your keyboard to highlight a control, press enter and then press the button on your controller to remap it
i hope that makes sense
