In this video I buy an old neglected sail boat built in 1979 and have the daunting task of cleaning and fixing it up! (did I mention I don't know anything about boats)
That was a strangely therapeutic watch. Aside from all the boat repair and maintenance, the coffee making was quite impressive! Looking forward to what’s coming next.
I bought my first boat, a Cal 224, at age 24. I had no sailing experience. It was a great boat, perfect for learning. Sailing became a major part of my life…that little Cal was the first of 5 sailboats I’ve owned, (2 Norsemen and 2 Hunters)all of which were fantastic boats.
Are you shopping for materials at Home Depot? There's a reason there is marine grade stuff, available, NOT at Home Depot. Become familiar with your local marine supply outlet. You'll be spending a lot of time and money there. But... keep the faith. The ocean is a fickle mistress.
Dude, awesome video. I went sailing for the first time last week and i'm trying to decide if I'm just temporarily excited or if this is a 'thing' for me now. If i still feel like this in 3 months, ill be buying one.
This is so inspiring. I thought when I started watching this video you would have a couple hundred thousand subscribers at least. I think it is criminal that at the point I am watching this you only have 325 subscribers. All the best on your travels in this lovely boat
Hi, I enjoyed your video very much. My worry is the use of gas on your yacht.!unless you are a gas fitter what you are doing could be illegal. Remember gas explodes when it settles in bilges. Pleas buy a gas alarm as well. One doesn’t want you falling a sleep and not waking up. All the best Tony W
Thanks for the message. I agree about the gas, it's not ideal at all. If I'm sleeping on the boat I disconnect the gas and put the gas bottle outside the cabin. The gas alarm is something I'll buy. As for the legality of it I think I should be OK as its a camping gas stove and bottle.
Another Leisure lover! Comforting to know there are others out there who buy a boat and learn by doing. I bought a Leisure 17 without any sailing experience. Had fun watching your video! Enjoy your sailing ⛵️
This was my first boat as well. On just our third trip we got cault in a force ten gale thunder and lightening tender on tow full of water. It was great fun. Been out in seven other storms since. Last one rudder snapped on my now boat a Dockrell 22. God I love sailing better than hang gliding.
I remember buying and teaching myself with my first Leisure. What a Dream of a boat to sail. th-cam.com/video/ZcmLAVgF4Is/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Tsp5G2poZFObsfww
Lovely video , A bo.at is a great thing to have to enlighten your mind and don't worry about lack of experience as Robin Knox Johnson said he was only an experienced sailor because he went through things he wasn't experienced to do.
See Teach yourself sailing. part one. First you buy a boat. Then switch on TH-cam and away you go. Easier than riding a bike... Its what you need to know that goes with it that takes time.. the same goes for sail planes anyone can do it.
"I became obsessed".... 🙂 Also, I used to sail on one of these on the Helford river in Cornwall in the late 1980's. Cracking stuff mate. Subscribed and will watch and chip in to help whenever I can ❤
G'day from Australia. Thats an fanastic deal, and an very nice boat. I have just recently bought an pacific 24. I will be doing an intro when i get my new action camera. Gerard.
Nice video, everyone is a novice when they start, key is soak up everything you can read, watch and chat about to fellow sailors who are further down the track of experience. Every day is a learning day, the only stupid question is one you don’t ask and there are many ways to do things and many opinions as you will find. Happy days and fair winds. Andy UK
Well put, totally agree. There's as many ways of doing things as there are people that do it, watch ask why and work out what works for you in your situation and conditions
I cannot find your use of the (intended) word in any of your text. Where is it to be found and in what was your original spelling if the word? Also, which country did you buy the ship in pls?
Hi there Mister. Did you take any sailing lesson before this? I’m asking as a 19 year old who wants to get into sailing but doesn’t even know how to swim. ❤
Hello there, when I was a kid I windsurfed which really helped me to understand how to read the wind and trim the sails accordingly but I had very little sailing experience. I recommend dingy sailing though as a starter
I done the same thing. Always wanted to but thought it was way too expensive. Same many friends said bad idea . But now sailing the Murray river lakes and coorong in south oz and luv it. Tell me no and I'll say fuck yes . Do it B4 ya can't
Glad I found you ...

Hi, So every time I wasn't using it I disconnected the gas to keep safe but thanks for the comment@gerrit2746
I'm subscribing! This is right up my street. I looked at a 23SL today. Thinking of opening my wallet.

It has been an amazing decision. I am now working on an old sailing schooner in Iceland doing wale watching. life leads us on interesting paths
I noticed the first thing we saw you doing was tying down the pressure washer. You will make a fine sailor.
Thats only because it wasn't mine. I have sunk a lot of tools in this boat journey
Hope you do more videos man. Myself and brother are just starting also always wanted to learn to sail and just going to look at a cinder 22 today.
nice one. thats cool
Good video
Thanks
Class first video. Can’t wait for the rest of the series!
thanks Moll
Excellent content. The name is cool, too.
Thanks, more to come

Ah the Helford in the 80s. When the Ferryboat was still a proper pub and Maenporth had the Shipwreck

Gas looks a bit dodgy. All needs to be in a drained compartment
Yes i agree, I disconnected it any time I wasn't using it
You are at the beginning of a life long journey with incredible rewards and a few disasters along the way.
I have kept at it and kept filming and will release more soon. thanks

I just realise I spelled Neighbour incorectly 😂

May I ask how it came to be that this was offered at such a very low price? (what a great deal!).
@@Mme.Swisstella you can find boats like this even for free sometimes, it was in poor shape and needed a lot of work
Pay attention with the jet washing around the portholes
Good idea 😅
You learn the hard way some times
That Leisure is a fine cruising vessel. Gratulations!
I just started with a 18ft Micro as a beginner. Will follow your path!
Thanks for the comment. It has been a very fun and rewarding experience so far

Thank You!
Good luck, as every sailor will tell you, you are in for years of good and bad sailing experience.
Thanks, John!
Dude i was so afraid that engine was going too fall into the river 😁. Great video, keep it up🤙
I have probably done back damage trying to hold it up leaning over at that angle
Also...is what I hear correct in that the color yellow reflects heat the best?

Are you in harbour village marina Killaloe...
bingo
Are you planning to live aboard your boat full time as well while you learn to sail?
So this was a couple years ago but to answer your question I was spending small chunks of time on board up to a few weeks at a time
Just subscrbed love it my dream same
Thanks

I am based around the world these days
@@becomingasailoris the setting of the videographic presentation that of the eire?

It did but I have not been uploading. i will soon
Great ...another person fixing a boat , maybe forever ?...To be fair I don't think you are ever through fixing a boat ...😢
haha, there are a lot of us. spoiler alert, I am still sailing and in far places too
Hahahahaha, a 23' fiberglass bathtub with a sheet is NOT a 'Yacht'...
Does yours tilt to the right whilst it’s not sailing? mine does .
Yup, even with watertanks and batteries on the port side to try to offset it, my '84 version still has a very slight list to starboard.
@Tony Morel ahh, I’ll try putting the batteries on the other side. Also glad to hear it’s not just mine , Thanks
I have not noticed, mine does not have an inboard but perhaps a mounted outboat to one side is enough weight to effect the balance
