    Before watching this video I watched another one and tried removing the NSS. For the life of me I could not get it off once I took out the bolts. I was about to just bypass the NSS but decided to watch one more video since bypassing would potentially cause even more issues. Found this video and the pry bar idea was my saving grace. 10/10 video. Only note i have (which I learned in the other video) is if you do this, tie a string to the cable you disconnect so that when you go to feed it back up and reconnect the NSS you can easily guide it up and through.

      Good call. This is why I keep a few lengths of house wire in the garage to fish stuff. Just tape your wire to the house wire and go fishin..

    For anyone it may concern. Still not sure if my NSS was the cause of my no crank no start, but after shifting through PRND about 5-10 times it started in neutral. I let it warm up a while and repeated the process, and now it starts in park again. Will definitely be taking out my NSS and cleaning it when I have more time.

    Just did this earlier today on my 1990 cause reverse lights wasn't working. Did it about 3 years ago also. Put it all back together and still no reverse lights lol. Ohm tested pins A and E on the nss plug, tested good. Then I realized they labeled the backup lights fuse as trans fuse. Replaced it and got reverse lights. Lol I felt pretty dumb for a minute there

      i tried doing this on my 90 also and it would not come off. and then how a little pry bar broke the back of it... needless to say had to wire it so it thought it was in park all the time...

    Protip : Use WD40 or penetrating oil with the brush. The oil will prevent future corrosion. Its how I clean connections I dont want to rust again.

      The hood release cable snapped and I couldn't reach the hinges so they are unbolted from behind the headlights. If you hood opens then you don't have to do that.

  •  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Question for A+: I sometimes have a no crank situation when in Parking. I can solve it just by pulling the lever back (touching it back, really). Which way should I turn the NSS for it to detect properly?

    • @NickInTimeFilms
      @NickInTimeFilms  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good question, I guess you'd have to see which way the shaft turns when it is shifted back, but I would assume the NSS would have to be clocked counter-clockwise slightly. Found out the ECU actually spits out an NSS reading which is neat. But your model is so old I'm not sure if there would be room for it still.

    •  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmm, interesting. Does it send five different voltages for each of the positions or how?

    • @NickInTimeFilms
      @NickInTimeFilms  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question, I never looked much into the wiring side of things, I just know you can tell if it's in a start gear or a drive gear on the REM.

    •  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah. Maybe it's just two different signals: Crank and no crank conditions.

    Hi mate, I have a problem with my xj98, the transmission (A340) does not work the parking brake, when I put the lever in P, the transmission does not lock. any idea or video to do the repair?

    • @NickInTimeFilms
      @NickInTimeFilms  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's a cable system. Might be worth checking if it's not getting jammed. The cable goes to the front left of the transmission. I'm not sure how the parking paw inside the transmission works.

    Did you look into what you should be seeing in the NSS specifically? Also, any word on what type of grease or lube should be used?

    • @NickInTimeFilms
      @NickInTimeFilms  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Seeing as far as what, the condition of the grease? Any kind of non conductive grease should be fine.

    • @bhampton1969
      @bhampton1969 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have gathered watching repair vids of the NSS that cleaning up the unit, cleaning the contacts and stretching the springs a little is what is really needed. Was any lube used in the unit for reducing friction when moving the the shifter. I did notice everyone was using die-electric grease on the contacts, but nothing in the housing to help with smooth movement of the actuator. Basically the moving parts had no lube other than the contacts.

    So I recently ran into the similar problems! I put it in park and it doesn't even turn over, just the brake light comes on. Put it in neutral and it won't start BUT push it about halfway between neutral and reverse and she starts right up. Is this fixable from just cleaning up the NSS?

    • @NickInTimeFilms
      @NickInTimeFilms  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like classic NSS to me if wiggling the starter makes it work. Needs to be cleaned and maybe slightly adjusted.

    • @aceriggs7
      @aceriggs7 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      NickInTimeFilms what do you adjust on the NSS?

    • @NickInTimeFilms
      @NickInTimeFilms  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The body of it can rotate slightly one way or the other once the lock bolt has been loosened. That would fix if it starts fine in like slightly reverse or slightly drive kinda thing.

    Hello there I was wondering if I could pick your brain some time soon because you seem to be one of the jeep guru's around and you also apparently know that they do some funny stuff in the cold and I've been having a few issues with mine lately since I moved to Ohio from Florida. As always your videos are informative and I thank you for any time you invest in replying to me.

    • @NickInTimeFilms
      @NickInTimeFilms  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh boy, cold start issues, this should be interesting

    • @aaronklein1490
      @aaronklein1490 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      NickInTimeFilms I should state that when I do everything right the engine itself starts just fine but in order to be able to get out or park I find myself having to turn my key forward from the run position but not quite far enough to engage the starter. If I don't the button on my shifter lever refuses to depress. (As it would if I wasn't pressing the brake pedal) of course once I do turn my key a bit forward it depresses normally and I can shift oddly enough without needing to press the brakes like I normally would. In addition my brake lights stopped working at the same time this started. Maybe it's not the cold weather but I'm still hoping you know.

    Working on my cousin's Toyota, I couldn't remember the component; but, then I remembered watching your video; and, I remembered what it was. The 1991 Toyota NSS looks exactly like the Jeep NSS. th-cam.com/video/yHe_oeGfqjo/w-d-xo.html

    Isn't that typical, it don't want to play up on camera :-D.
    You always make me laugh with your annoyed anger, im sure in real life you swear like a dockyard worker :-D.
    That switch was a sticky mess, petrol and a paint brush would have helped to clean it.
    I bet even petrolium jelly would have worked ok, i've never seen it react to anything.
    Or silicone spray perhaps.

    Nick in time film's might have been a good time to change trans. fluid and a just the band's and easy turn the nut not just pry the nut the bolt in the middle is a band ajustment bolt nut is for locking band ajustment you will have two band ajustment either two out side the trans. or some trans one outside one inside

      I think this is more dependent on the transmission you have. Did the ZJ 4.0L come with an AW-4? I'm not sure where or how the NSS is setup on the 42re or whatever chrysler slush boxes they came with

    Same exact fucking thing happened to me, got a cel for the nss. Went to open the hood and the latch literally does nothing and is flopping around, now I gotta get the headlight buckets out :/
    Edit: you literally can just reach underneath the truck, behind the radiator and grab the cable and pull it if it’s still there. I’m lucky enough that my cable wasn’t broken, but the clip just keeps coming off the “central” latch
