Their is a drain bolt on the bottom of the engine block ,that drains antifreeze, most of these video's dont mention that.

Most flushes require 3 to 6 flushes to get the system clean....the way this guy did his only required one. One easy step

Thanks for making a straight forward diy. I just recently got my 1st Jeep. Got her cheap, but when I took it to my mechanic to get oil change & diagnosis discovered a blown head gasket. But before full panic mode kicked in.... think he saw the look, he told me how he fixed his with these fix-its in a bottle. Thank God for technology :) I use two K-SEAL Ultimate & FiberLock. When I went to see him after her 1st treatment he was glad to see less smoke. Unfortunately she's still smoky when we first get going. Wanted to entirely flush the system & your video was just what I need. Thanks for making these for backyard mechanics 😀 I subscribed
when flushing the block, you should restrict the bottom hose so the water backs up through the system, otherwise all your flushing is the waters path of least resistance if that makes sense. Your likely missing more then half of the system.
It's amazing how much more exspensive Concentrate is Now days Compared to 50/50 Mix

One step this way vs the Chrisfix way where you have to flush, run the car, flush, run the car, etc. I love Chrisfix, but this way gets it all done at once.

it is one step as opposed to the draining and filling 10 plus times that it would take otherwise to clean a system that thoroughly

Side note, when doing this for overheating
Its also a good time to spray/blow out the debris from the radiator fins. Spraying or blowing from the backside of the radiator towards the front to remove the grass, dirt, and debris that collects in the fins over time.
It can really make a huge difference, especially on older vehicles that have collected a lot of debris. Just a thought.
Add some shampoo to pull out the dirt and dust in the fins
@@safetyfirstintexas and don't forget the conditioner either, for those dry brittle radiator fins. helps the fins stay more manageable and adds a healthy shine.

From someone that has worked on all there own car maintenance for many years I do like your video. I do it the same way many times as you showed in your video. I have a good pointer to share with you and the others. Before doing the antifreeze flush and change find out what your cooling total capacity is and when you do the refill put in half the total capacity of undiluted antifreeze first before you add any distilled water. This way you end up with a 50/50 mixture of coolant and water. Its that simple.
Careful blowing full air pressure directly into heater core, it could crack...
I flushed my system a few times on my ZJ. Was clean but had a lot of scale and other buildup that I could see. Dumped half a gallon of cleaning vinegar in the system and the rest distilled water. After letting it run for a few days, I drained and refilled with water and couldn't believe the amount of buildup that came out. Like you said, it looked like chicken water but times 100. Thank you for the video!

Easier way to flush the whole system is just open/remove the petcock put hose in de-gas/reservoir to keep it full while draining start the car and let it idle until it reaches operating temp. Then the thermostat will open and you can rev it a little while keeping an eye on the temperature gauge and then shut the engine off after a few minutes. Remove the water hose let the water drain from the petcock then reinstall. Fill with distilled water and concentrate coolant at about 70% coolant because there is water left in the heater core/block so once it mixes it’ll be close enough to 50/50. Easy 👍🏻

The cheap jeep videos are super helpful! I got a 94 black 5.2 zj as my second car so knowing how to do a budget lift and what problems I will run into is really great, by the end of the summer I will be doing a similar lift to the one you did (i.e the F2R spring swap, extended sway bar disconnects etc) and hopefully ill be able to fit 33's. Thanks for all the videos really helps out a kid like me learning how to work on my jeep XD

Tap water is used to flush the system - it contains alot sediments (eg fluorine, Mg, Iron) that can damage engine. I noticed in end you use distilled water & antifreeze - which is good. Distilled should be used for everywhere

I'm also a big fan of adding rad flush a few days before. I've never done the flush this way I've always done the keep replacing with distilled water and pulled the thermo but I might give this a try on my new project. Nice video.

After your test drive you do not need to remove the radiator cap just check the coolant recovery bottle. As you saw it sucked fresh coolant into the system. Working as designed. 👍🏼

Don’t worry about clearing out the water, check this out. Let’s say your system holds 4 gallons of 50/50. What you do is pour 2 gallons of strait antifreeze in , then fill the rest up with water until it’s full. That way you know you got all the antifreeze in and it’s has a perfect 50/50 mix.
Except that if you've still got old crud-filled coolant in your system, the old will mix with the new and you'll be wasting both time and coolant. Besides, with water and coolant still in there to begin with, you won't be able to get all 4 gallons in and your balance won't be 50/50.

@@ibberman Yes, if he is confident he got it all out.Honestly, blowing air is a waste of time, he probably didn't even get more than a pint out .But hey I guess it's tap water, but that is nothing the concentrate can't take care of

O my cheap jeepin. I just changed my water pump and thermo for the 2nd time in 24 hrs. Just kept leakn. Till i found a penny heads up. I picked that penny strait up. Then tightened down a few lbs extra on the bolts n no leaks. Hr later watch Matt do the same thing n give me a big smile.

The automatic climate control is the only thing my current ZJ doesn't have that I miss from my previous one. Wish I could swap in the automatic climate control and the driver information center from another ZJ into my current one. Those 2 items were nice.

Just go to an auto supply and pick up a Prestone engine flushing kit. Splice the appropriate tee into the heater outlet hose, put the discharge spigot in the radiator filler neck. Now connect your garden hose to the tee you put in the heater hose, turn the water on and start the engine. Let it run for about 10 minutes or so. Drain the water, disconnect your hose, and put the cap on the tee. Remove the discharge from the filler neck and refill the system with coolant.

We need a video on how to install a drain petcock with a hose so you can drain every drop directly into a bucket. I'm tired of getting radiator showers as well. Since I've pulled engines 4 or 5 times you would think I would have done that by now. Also, another good reason to use only distilled water is electrolysis. That's where the rust in an engine comes from (especially if the engine is iron, and depending on where you live tap water's conductivity can vary greatly). Tap water (or any non-stilled water) has particles in it that make it electrically conductive. You actually get current flowing through the coolant system since all of the grounds for the vehicle end at the block. Electrons actually flow from the negative into the positive.

I go wheeling in the Mojave desert and Johnson Valley. Would have pulled the thermostat flushed without it and install a new thermostat. Can be a lot of work but with 120F out on the trail, I do everything I can to keep from having to walk out.
Park with your nose uphill when trying to burp the system, after it cools more air will be at the radiator cap, speeds things up
this is irrelevant since all the air will dump into the top of the radiator and stay there anyways. maybe a tiny pocket in the upper hose but the reservoir will resolve that for you without intervention. thats its purpose...
That is what the service garage does if the rad cap isn’t the “high point” or if the heater core possibly trapped air.

You forgot to do the Safety Squint before dropping the coolant
the only right way to drain a cooling system is to pull the lower hose. think of all the stuff you could do with the 2 minutes you save
I always turn the vehicle around on the hill after filling then top it off, radiator cap at the highest point, helps to burp the system
You can also point the vehicle up hill when filling and it'll push the air out. And start it and let it idle up to temp and refill. But having the cap on, it refill from the reservior like it's supposed to
Find the capacity of the coolant system and make sure you use half of that much concentrated coolant. You don't need to make any 50/50 unless you bought a half a gallon more than you needed and you want to keep it for topping off but Ive never needed to top mine off in two years so you might just be storing the 50/50 for years.
I've never had chicken water but I have had hamburger water. The melted ice in the cooler was all that was available.

When you flush the radiator take the heater core hoses off and the pressure from the hose will push all the old coolant from the engine block out of the heater core hoses. Then just flush the heater core.

when flushed and clean water still left in the engine simply use concentrate instead of 50/50 cuz air will not push all the water out think about it as soon as air will make room to pass over water it will do so and rest of the water will stay on the bottom of the block

I like to add the use of a air/water pressure flusher and a vacuum coolant filler to not have air pocket if you can justify there expense.

Target sells distilled water in very nice containers that won't break like the ones from the grocery stores I would get seven or eight jugs instead of using hose water. This is exactly what I did I got it at Target about eight jugs and it's cheap

Thanks for the video. I have a TJ so my hoses were a bit different but the concept was the same. I watched again after performing the flush and in my test drive I forgot to run my heater core. I also wasn’t able to fill coolant into the pump like you did because my heater hose from the pump to the top of the block is a rigid pipe not a hose and it’s horizontal. I still feel pretty comfortable. Also… there was a rubber flap below my radiator that had a TON of debris. I think it was blocking the ac and not the radiator but I took it off? Thoughts on that?
Great Video! I have used the chemical flushes before and killed my cooling system. I NEVER use them anymore! Got me an 83 CJ7 frankenjeep last summer and plan to make it my daily driver. It needs lots of loving to get there but it is worth it. Keep the great vids coming!!!
I drain my coolant long before it gets "Nasty as Fuck" and refill it with fresh antifreeze, a water pump failure is a thing of the past.

“You’re paying for water and wasting your money” *buys water*
a gallon of distilled water is 75 cents. a gallon of water in premix antifreeze is about 5 dollars.
50/50 mix $10/gal × 5 gal= $50. Concentrate $13/gal, distilled water $1/gal, so 3 gal concentrate + 3 gal water = $39+$3=$42. You have saved $8 and still have a gallon of 50/50 mix you have made remaining for future top offs.
i just did a head gasket and expansion plugs on a 4.0, i used my pressure washer to clean the block while i had the expansion plugs out, then lifted the heater core hoses and let vinegar sit in the elevated hoses for a about a day now, its completely clogged, i did the same to one of my jeeps a few years back that was just as clogged, it still works great, hope this one works out too. just wanted to leave a tip to help out for those who have the same problem.
