I just ordered a set, they look beautiful. I like this version of lotr the best, better than single versions, the paper, artwork, print and feel of the book is incredible.

Bought mine, I'm really hoping they do matching Hobbit with Alan Lee's Illustrations and Silmarillion in this aesthetic as well. These books are absolutely gorgeous.

Is the paper quality about the same as the illustrated by author edition of the Silmarillion? I ask because I really love that edition and don't really like the thinner more easily yellowed paper of the standard paperbacks. I'd like to know what kind of paper this is printed with

A great review, many thanks! I see that the Amazon UK version is listed as having 140 more pages than the US version. Does anyone know if this is just due to the UK version not being as tall? I would have thought that both versions would be the same size.
I'm far from convinced the quarter binding is actually leather. I ordered directly from Harper Collins during a 3 hour 50% flash sale, so I'm OK with what I paid, but I wish the quarter binding was better quality. It is indistinguishable from cardboard in my view.
The print quality looks similar to the Alan Lee editions. Even the green hue of the pages. TBH that's a lot of money for mass produced faux quarter leather. At least it looks good. Not like the loud colored recent editions
Was surprisingly disappointed by the paper. Compared this new Edition to the Standard Hardback Alan Lee Illustrated boxset from 2020 side by side and the 2020 boxset paper is denser. Overall Print quality is better in the 2020 which just shouldn't be the case. Champagne problems for sure though as the entire set is quite beautiful and put together nicely but as much as I wanted this to be my re-reading copies of LOTR I will most likely go back to the 2020 standard boxset of these books.

I've been reading an email I was sent from Harper Collins and this 70th Anniversary edition is apparently based on the one volume Centenary edition illustrated by Alan Lee but with new paintings from him as well as pencil drawings. I love the Centenary edition so count me in to get a copy of this one.

From what I see in this video, there are two new plates in Fellowship: The Bridge of Khazad Dûm, and Lothlorien. So that's two new plates in the first book, let's see what's new in Two Towers and Return of the King.
While I prefer my single volume Illustrated edition, and therefore have no reason to own this edition, I will most likely buy this set as a Christmas gift for some friends.

If this is so special, I would have dressed up for the occasion. : ) Tolkien would never have approved of merely an underwear shirt. He he. Part ot the attraction of being a Tolkien fan, is being conservative and dignified. I like the 50th anniversary edition best, with Tolkien's own artwork. Alan Lee's presentations are a completely different in mentality - pale and nondescript.
When it comes to loose items such as maps - I think it would be better to provide some sort of pocket to put them in so they don't keep falling out.
It’s a good suggestion. No pocket in this edition though.

They are exactly the same (size, page count) for the US and UK editions.

How does this edition’s paper quality compare to the 2020 box set that was illustrated by Alan Lee. That box set also included the hobbit.

I have the 1977 Folio Society editin, but I was disappointed in the covers and I didn't like the illustrations at all. This looks much better.
I've seen various Folio editions on eBay and I'm not a fan of them at all.
