Game Review & Impressions
---------------------------------------------------
Also known as Wild Fang, Tecmo Knight is a side-scrolling fighting game created by, as the name implies, Tecmo. The gameplay is based very closely on Shadow Warriors/Ninja Gaiden, which Tecmo released a year or so earlier, but is no where near as entertaining. In fact, the only thing I can say that is really memorable about this is the level of gore - you literally punch heads clean off the enemies, which is rather amusing for the first 10 minutes or so, and the intro is rather shocking for its time.
The player has the ability to transform between a guy mounted on the shoulders of an even bigger guy, who pummels enemies with his oversized ham-like fists, and a mounted on the back of a tiger. The tiger is certainly the more agile of the two modes, and your attack -- a spiked ball on the end of a chain -- has extended reach, but does less damage. Each transformation consumes a number of stars, shown above the character bar in the bottom left of the screen, and must be topped up by collecting the skulls of defeated opponents. The third and final form, a fire-breathing wyvern, can only be activated by collecting a specific power-up dropped by enemies, something that appears so rarely that it might as well have been removed from the game altogether.
Tecmo Knight's worst crime is that it's simply too dull. The combat isn't rewarding and the difficulty too punishing to really recommend this, certainly when compared to Shadow Warriors. The initial novelty of the bestial enemies and gore wear thin before too long, and I doubt anyone will bother to continue beyond their initial credit.

This game is so brutal for 1989! How have I never heard of it? 9 Year old me would of been amazed! Ok I still am, will definitely play soon, thanks.
And no game rating system existed
Yet.😂
It wasn't very popular with operators for that very reason.
This game always put me in a state of awe as you can really feel like you are in a world filled with terrifying giants. You're only a tiny man riding on a smaller giant.
Yeah, like Hell on earth lol
@@willb1742 Can u imagine living in a world like that!?
@@HowlingMoonCinemas
I know right! They really captured it!
I remember this game as a child. Never knew it was this scary, violent and gloomy. My god THAT INTRO!!
@@willb1742 Yeah! U could feel the power and size of the monsters in that intro!
@@HowlingMoonCinemas
In retrospect, I'm surprise they got away with that.
11:40 - Did that enemy just clear a line of bombs for the player? Genius!
14:05 - Enemy: "I'll just hit these bombs with my weapon. That will show that hero and his ride who's boss!" *Explodes himself and his friends*
Axe wielding demon jumps out yelling "NO FUTURE!"
Merry Christmas!
Holy sh*t! Altered Beast, Golden Axe and Splatter House rolled into one! The intro alone would fool an average gamer into believing this game was made by another company, especially for the time. Tecmo was more associated with sports games. But when you look at Fatal Frame it shouldn't be too unreasonable to make a connection. Can't believe I never heard of this. Thanks for sharing!
Edit: An average gamer would make the connection between Tecmo to Ninja Gaiden. I barely had interest in said game so that shows how much I really know and likely why this game went over my head.
Guy sitting on the neck of a giant reminded me Dahna: megami tanjo.
Yeah but Ninja Gaiden doesn't have Storm Dragons lol
Well, the reason why someone would make a connection from this to Ninja Gaiden is due to the similar artstyle it has for the arcades, other than the sound effects and music style.
Edit: Didn't realize you meant Tecmo, but yeah the company's most popular games weren't really sports games especially during this time. Other than Tecmo Bowl, it's primarily known for hack n slash games.
Plus fist of the north star.
I have to admit, punching the heads off of giant demons and collecting their skulls for points is extremely based.
Even the game over screen was killer enough to play this game....
Ninja Gaiden's game over screen was more intense.
I had a small crush on that rad-ass wolf demon. Talk about ookami.
This is a game that haunted my memories because I could never find any info on it -- and with a name like Tecmo Knight, who could be surprised. Of course, the internet would eventually solve that mystery with videos like this one 👍
Oh man such a classic. Such an intense attract screen - Love this game.
I remember seeing this
game in the arcades
somewhere in 1991 and
1992 only, which of course
I was so intimidated by both The Continue
Screen and The Game Over Screen that depicts The Anamorphic Wolf Character popping out
of the screen holding an
axe (or hatchet) with words saying: “NO FUTURE!” as if to say
“YOU’RE DEAD!!!” also.
Which my words were like Nope, Nope! No Thank You To That and avoid it since
it is a Nightmare Fuel…
However “Street Fighter II” Continue Screen
became my worst
nightmare since childhood
and I’m still intimidated by
it even as a full grown
person with Autism still…
Remember, this is Tecmo! The same people that gave us Ninja Gaiden one year prior to Tecmo Knight/Wild Fang. And the game that gave us the infamous Continue Screen with Ryu strapped to a blood altar with a circular saw lowering towards his chest.
@@bunnehboi1985
That too is a Nightmare Fuel as well!
@@bligamerplayer3299 The only thing ruins it, is before the sawblade hits his chest, you just hear "Ooooooh...!" You can't help but think that's funny as hell. Not to mention when the Game Over music finishes, you hear the sumo wrestler boss go "Dos'koi!"
The one that still intimidates me is Rolling Thunder, with the creepy-ass alien weirdo laughing at you. Not to mention, it fucking jumpscares you since it cuts from the "Game Over" text to... Piccolo's abortion.
Wild Fang/Tecmo Knight is one of the hardest arcade games I've played, and I was only able to reach up to level 2. I still like the fact you get to switch between tiger and giant with the occasional dragon once the meter fills up. The game also has a pretty traumatizing game over screen featuring the main protagonist getting eaten by a giant gorilla as scary music plays in the background. 👹🐅🐉
The Ninja Gaiden Game Over screen (also from Tecmo) was more traumatizing, with the protagonist tied and saw about to cut eviscerate him.
@hektols And with all those demons and monsters looking on smilly evilly as you're about to get sawed in half. I think they scared me more than the sawing when I was a youth and saw that.
@@Hektols I remember loving that screen because of my fledgling love of bondage.
I was today-years-old when I learned of this game's existence. Wow! It's pretty unique, and I have to admit, I'm a little surprised at how super violent it is. As an aside, I wonder why the giant mount looks so different between his title screen illustration and his actual playable sprite.
Them: Why are you such a try hard? Its so cringe!
Me: *riding a bengal tiger and beating an aligator man's head off its body with a flail when I was 7yrs old
My favourite game...long time ago...sometimes only fighters survive...and it's hard to fight monster
Wow brutal intro
The continue screen is also brutal - your hero gets eaten by something with big jaws.
You can see it here 23:39
Temo's answers to *Splatter House* ...
Oh my God finally. For years I was trying to remember the name of this game. A coffee shop near my home as a kid had this. Thank you for the upload.
So you have to face Kong 3 different times? I wonder why they did not make Kong the final boss for this?
That game brings so much childhood memories 😊
Golden "Tecmo Knight " Axe
Pretty good game that mixes the taste of double dragon, golden axe and splatter house 🤷🏻♂️
I gotta say, the whimsical, circus-y title font is just a tiny bit at odds with the game's incredibly bloody violence.
I did enjoy this game back in the day.
Thank Goodness for MAME, so I can still play it whenever I want.
I really like obscure games like this one. Haven't played it (yet) but i will definitely enjoy this!
Simon Belmont riding a tiger🎉
An f out for the guy and girl on
The intro.
Damn these were some talented developers. Very impressive looking game for the hardware at that time.
One of the most common baddies in this game from Tecmo are Moblins from Legend of Zelda, that's amusing.
One can only wonder why Tecmo didn't do an NES version of Tecmo Knight in the style of the NES Ninja Gaiden as it would have been FAR more awesome than the arcade game.
That thumbnail is serious business
King kong is a villain now.
I think that wolf demon on the game over screen is rad-ass. There'll totally be no future when I get with him.
Anyway, I remember this one from one of the rando arcades that were in New York as a child.
Have to say, it is one hell of the intro...
Brilliant game, ate so many of my quarters!
Never heard of this game looks awesome love the Blood 🩸
I loved this game as a kid, but man did I suck at it!
Man I'd love to see this game get a modern update, old levels, added levels, updated resolution...
How did I never see this game in the arcade?
Memories!! Wonder if it is ever possible to beat the game in little human form?
holy smokes that opening.
This is like a 12 year olds fever dream. I love it.
As a Golden Axe fan, I would of definitely enjoyed playing this
Damn, feels and looks like Shadow Warriors 1988. Same style, even some sounds are the same.
FATALITY intro 🔪😅
What where how did I miss this gem ! Probably because golden axe got my attention...but this is much more interesting and less boring!
Wait… that gorilla is still out there! It would be funny if it walked across the background of the end screen 😂
NO FUTURE!
Villians in the game:so anyway I
Went for a parlay on the guy an girl.😂
Dragon's Crown back in the 80s 👍
How was this game not the start of the talks of "Video game violence corrupting the youth"
Well the esrb didn't exist yet meaning
They could do whatever they want.
Until mortal Kombat came.
Game companies use to get away with
A lot before rating systems existed.
Show naked wemen on posters in
The background etc.
@@nehemiahpouncey3607 The Simpsons arcade game had a lady in a bikini on a poster in Moe's Tavern.
King kong at 2:20 lol
What a strange game. I don't think there's any in the beat'em up genre quite like it! And a Storm Dragon as a random drop? How awesome is that???
Game: Oh, hi! We're going to feature gameplay that is reminiscent of (but chronologically precedes) _Golden Axe_ , _Alisia Dragoon_ and _Altered Beast_ , but with gore like _Splatterhouse_ , and it's going to be based on the arcade _Shadow Warriors/Ninja Gaiden_ . And it will take place in a dark fantasy world!
I can see how the review of this states the game play is a bit stale and I won't disagree with that, but I think there's a certain charm to ridiculously over-the-top violence and gore from late 80s games, with their ridiculous plots. Just plain mindless fun. I think it says something rather sad about my preference for genuinely repetitious gameplay in arcade games like this, over the rather boring walking simulators with "deep narrative" we oftentimes get today. I'll give this one a try.
Reminded me of ninja gaiden the sound at least
I only knew it exists.😮
I play this one before and it was quite graphic back in this day but now it's pretty much tame nowadays but I do love me some beat'em ups though.
The intro was sad tho.
They didn't deserve that.
The snake women have red beach balls!
How exactly the bonus calculated? I mean in Round III it got 0?
AKA Wild Feng
What I want to know is... why put a continue screen up directly after beating the game?
I added that at the end of the video because the continue screen was pretty cool - I just forgot to add a timestamp.
so the dragon power up has limited duration?
Yes
King kong is in this game?
Do we know why a little man rides on his head holding a sword?
The little guys are the Tecmo knights, their names are Duke(player 1)and Fleet(player 2)and they’re elite warriors from the kingdom of Valdik. The big guy is Smoke man one of three deities of their kingdom along with the Tiger and Dragon. While the knights were on an escort mission the beast demons attacked Valdik and captured its citizens with the intent to resurrect their king through blood sacrifices. Thats the Japanese version.
I have pants like those!
6:12 Death Dealer cameo
*Death Adder
... i think .
Fine
WOOOOOOOOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! like +1 =)
Poor guy an girl.😢
19:48
is that SEGA?
Seems way better than Altered Beast. Shame it's always the worse games that catches on attention.
23:38 WHY?
