Also known as Dragon Unit, it wasn't until I started playing through the game that something in the back of my mind started to realise that there was something oddly familiar about this game, although I couldn't quite place it. When I looked the game up online I discovered that Dragon Unit was also known as Castle of Dragon, and it was at that point the penny dropped: I had played and recorded the NES version of the game several months ago. It turns out there's dipswitch in the arcade game's BIOS controls which flips between the two titles, something which seems slightly odd when you realise it's decoupled from the region settings.
Anyway, the coin-op version of Castle of Dragon is a real oddity; I've never played anything quite like it. I guess the closest parallel which comes to mind is Rastan, or even Rastan II/Nastar, although it's much weirder. It's essentially a side-scrolling hack and slash affair with platforming elements and boss fights, but what makes it so odd is the way the game literally shovels weapon upgrades and power ups in your direction at every opportunity. The non-magical weapons, such as axe and chain mace, are permanent, whereas the orbs which infuse your sword with spell-charged ranged attacks only seem to last for a limited period of time. Your knight is also equipped with a shield which can block certain projectiles and enemy attacks, and also wears a suit of armour to absorb damage. The armour visually degrades as it weakens, falling away to reveal our hero's bare chest and furry loin cloth.
As to whether Castle of Dragon is actually any good, I can't say I'd be inclined to deposit more coins beyond my first credit. The combat just doesn't feel particularly satisfying, and the electric guitar-infused soundtrack is terribly grating. This is the kind of game you'd play out of curiosity, not because you're looking for a good time.

Forget the princess, just stay with Medusa and accept your fate. 😅
Don't mind if i do😺
I love that you fight hard to complete an arcade game to get rewarded with an image of the development staff with one of them flipping you off
dude's probably from the yakuza or something
Its probably crazy tom
Nowadays they sell you DLC made during development, it's pretty much the same thing.

No, not really.
Medusa lookin mighty healthy
OMG!!! I distinctly remembered seeing this in the local bowling alley's arcade as a little kid, and for the longest time I was struggling to remember the name of the game and it was driving me absolutely crazy! Thanks to you and the YT algorithm, I can now finally put that plaguing mystery to rest! 😆
Now that is one fat dragon.
I love this old style manga. Wish they still created this nowadays.
A manga is a comic book
@@mattias969 Yeah, and anime is a "movie" But i think you know what i mean. This old style anime/manga whatever looks way better than we have now. The characters back in the day were better drawn and there's no rush in drawing as of what we see in the new anime and shit... Like for example. Ninja Scroll en Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust are great examples how an anime should be drawn, just gorgeous!
@@phlebiax5592 Agreed! That was REAL anime/manga! Everything was sooo much better than anything now! It had eye-popping, bright, vivid color for excellent action scenes and stunning atmosphere, NO rotoscoping, smooth camera shots (none of that annoying, shaky cameraman nonsense), superb details with many layers of shading, including highlights, heroic, masculine characters with actual muscles, far better styles of faces and hair and just much better character designs PERIOD. The 80s and 90s were easily the golden age of Jap-animation! They also had much better soundtracks too! Remember Char's Counterattack, Black Lion, Teknoman, Gundam Wing and Jin-Roh as just a few examples!?
Yup,they should make a comeback, the old style art especially PC88 and 98 is best with potrait mode
BE HONEST...WHO ALL CLICKED HERE FOR MEDUSA'S BOOBIES
The MC looks like a medieval Evangelion.
Yeah a pretty strange looking game to say the least. On a side à lot of weapons thrown at you basically all the time and a final level clearly made to pay a lot more.
The way they managed the depth is weird too even for the time with two separate lines chained by an animation. Could be interesting still.
But the ultimate... The famous " ending that scroll so fast you can't read" is always hilarious, even more on arcade.
I was one of the very few persons to have the chance to play this game in the arcade back then. This is a tough game due to the very stiff controls, as far as i remember.
Looks pretty cool. The weapon tutorial at the start is interesting, rarely see arcades bother with that.
I just love those retro high contrast 320x224 pixel art graphics! for me they could have been enough this way!
Agree 100%
What a cool soundtrack!
That boss music is so GRATING
Love the visual on this one.
It's not really beautifully but is has a very distinctive touch.
My first contact with the title was through the NES version which I particularly preffer over the arcade one. Interesting game, somewhat remembers Gladiator/Great Gurianos a lot. But nothing to fancy about.
Good music for an '89 release
It's using some clever sample loops.
Our hero has blond hair at the end cutscenes but during the game it is brown. Huh...? He must have gone Super Saiyan somewhere along his journey.
Wow 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Perfect for the start of 2024🧨🧨🧨🧨🧨
For an 89 title, the sound quality is very good. Used to these old games sounding like fm synth - like a genesis. This almost sounds like samples judging by the short music loops.
Yes, this kind of sample-based music was one of SETA's early gimmicks. Abhorrent quality because the X1-010 can only access max 1MB of external sample ROM, so what's there had to be compressed to oblivion and back.
Very nice gameplay 😊
Не знал, что она на аркадных автоматах была, играл только на nes. Автор спасибо ❤
This arcade version rocks to the fullest than the NES/Famicom version - although it also deserves attention)))
The music looping so quickly, like less than 5 seconds long in the boss theme, is maddening
Very limited sample ROM, that's why.
Like the jingle when you beat the boss, same one is on the nes port.
А сейчас "принцессы" такие, что надо дракона спасать!😅
I just might look a topless Medusa in the eyes by mistake
This looks like a fun game...though I never played it 😅
I never knew this wasn't an NES original!
you do start to wonder what sort of reference they were using for the walk anims.....
Only played the NES portS, Castle of Dragon and Sword Master, both fun and really challenging (mostly because of the hit boxes)
Looks like "Wolfteam" developer staff. Arcus odessy, earnest evans, el viento, annette again.
I didn't realize this was an arcade game.
This so much better than the NES version
5:58 - Castlevania vibes
Interesting that you fight Medusa and the last boss as singles, where every other boss is twins.
I think the levels which incorporate the foreground and background play areas seems to include 2 of each boss character.
Too bad, I hope there are twins Medusa🙄
I wonder what Crazy Tom is doing rightr now 🤔
they dont know how to animate the walk he's walking like the dance of Michel Jackson
@0:36 -- is that a *BATtle* Axe? 🦇⛏
Surprised that they'd risk boobs in an arcade game.
For an international audience, perhaps - there's actually a considerable number of arcade coin-ops with content far more provocative than this. I don't think this was actually released outside of Japan, and cultural attitudes for such things may have been different.
@@AL82RetrogamingLongplays Why would the text in the game be English then? It wouldn't be a problem in my country either, but you're gonna scare Americans with that.
In Japan English text isn’t that uncommon on signs.
@@AL82RetrogamingLongplays Ahem, apparently… Medusa is censored when covered with bras in Overseas.
Is this a new or old game I was gonna make one like this
why is the music digitized? weird
And here I thought I'd seen it all... gotta be more thorough in browsing mame.
That does it, why do the zombies look like undead Narutos?
cool ass game..
Ayo that thumbnail is mad sus
This game is very short and sweet, although the wording gets some "Blind Idiot" Translation sometimes.
Holy shit I only played NES version... didn't knew this one
Looks like Rastan 2
Isn't 4k not-eco-friendly?
👏👏🔝🎄
4:38 topless Medusa 😹
okay, so maybe this isn't the best game ever, but in its defense -- videogame titties.
lol
What game is this?
"Longplay" beat the game in 9mins 🤣
Ms DOS gaming was a joke
wow , this game has the worst game soundtrack & annoying sounds i ever heard.
Other than that it looks cool.
This game is ass.
